No new player was written. It just slots online video libraries into FnOS's official media app: fnmedia-ext 20 days 384 stars

What it is A plugin installed on a Feiniu NAS that lets the built-in media app (including the TV client) search and play online video from across the web.

Why it took off Others had built the same feature before, but this was the first to put it into the official app everyone uses daily. It works right after install without touching the system. It also rode the wave that the Feiniu music extension had just made, and NAS tutorial bloggers picked it up as a series topic.

BHow you could play it Stop building Feiniu media-app plugins. Apply the same play of "piggybacking on an official app's native UI" to another host (UGREEN, Zspace, Synology, Emby/Jellyfin) or another content type (photos, audiobooks, livestreams), and pitch it directly to NAS tutorial bloggers.

Grade B: the playbook is clear, and the openings for other hosts and content types are still there, though few people know about them. But the circle is small, star ceiling is only a few hundred, and the whole thing depends on official APIs and content copyright, so it could break at any time. Whispers in the small circle

A developer with a single repo built a plugin for fnOS (Feiniu's NAS OS). It doesn't offer a new player or a new site. It just lets the built-in Feiniu "Media" app search and play online videos from across the web. 20 days, 384 stars, 67 forks, 82 releases. Below: why it took off, where users came from, where the same play could still work, and whether building a project that earns stars like this is worth it.

A tutorial you have to follow an official account to get the installer

Oct 28, 2026, the NAS tutorial site nas123.cc published #16 in its "Feiniu Apps" series: "fnmedia-ext, a Feiniu Video plugin: no more building your own media library, all web resources aggregated automatically." The post has no GitHub link. To get the install package you have to "follow this site's WeChat Official Account and reply [fnmedia-ext]". Installation is three steps: install the FPK manually in App Center, "if it gets stuck at 55%, just wait longer", then open Feiniu Video. The original reads: "If you don't understand, you don't need to change any settings. Just open Feiniu Video and you can use it."

The next day, Bilibili uploader "_超超不吵吵" posted "Feiniu tutorial 16 | Feiniu media extension: builds a media library automatically, watch movies freely~", which had 11-06 plays and 5,256 favorites as of 207. The article and video shared the same numbering, and #15 covered the Feiniu music extension, so it's most likely the same person (inference). These couple of days were also when stars grew fastest: 10-27 +29,10-28 +33,10-29 +58 (single-day peak), 10-30 +48.

What it actually does

Feiniu Media (trim.media) is fnOS's official media app, with clients for web, mobile, TV, and Apple TV. Anyone running Feiniu is basically using it. But it can only play files on your own drives.

fnmedia-ext hooks into that official service's local interface and mixes online videos from Apple CMS resource sites and TVBox subscriptions into the official app's search results and media library home page: 4 Douban chart libraries, plus 4 "huge libraries" that dig deep by category. Playback still uses Feiniu's built-in player, and watch history, resume, and multi-user permissions all work as usual. Because it's injected server-side, a change applies to every client at once, so the Feiniu TV app on the living-room TV also gets the whole web library.

Two more points eased users' worries:

  • It doesn't touch official components: it doesn't modify the official binaries, nginx, or database, and disabling it reverts to the stock service. NAS users fear breaking their system most.
  • Content works right after install: the README says it "doesn't bundle a resource database and doesn't answer for resource site addresses," but the code ships with 11 resource-site routes out of the box and can one-click import Fantasy Hard subscriptions. The line above, "the settings can be left completely unchanged," refers to exactly this.

The same feature already existed. Why this one?

"Free online video aggregation" is an old and crowded niche:

PlanFormScaleHow it differs from them
LibreTVOpen-source web site, needs Docker deployment23.7k starSame function. fnmedia-ext's chart layer was designed after it, but it's a separate web page and can't get into the Feiniu app or TVs.
LunaTV / MoonTVOpen-source web siteLunaTV 10.9k starSame as above, lots of "Feiniu + MoonTV" deployment tutorials online
TVBox / Yingcang / Fantasy HardAndroid client + subscriptionsThe de facto standard for Chinese TV boxesEvery Android device needs its own install, and iOS and Apple TV can't use it
CinetryMulti-source player3.0k starYou have to switch to a different app
MediaWarp / TgtoDriveReverse proxy for Feiniu Media / Emby789 / 2.2k starAlso piggybacks on an official service, but does cloud-drive direct links rather than injecting online libraries

Capability-wise it has nothing new. What's new is where it sits. Before it, no one had built online libraries into Feiniu's official native media UI. Users don't have to learn a new entry point, don't have to deploy Docker, and don't have to install another app on the TV. Most of the issues discuss the TV client and Apple TV (#1, #7, #10, #37, #48, #53, #66, #68), which shows people came for "watch it directly on the living-room TV."

A bonus capability: TVBox subscriptions used to run only on Android, but now they're parsed uniformly on the NAS (the full package even bundles an Android runtime specifically to run hardened scrapers), so Apple TV and iPhone can use them too. TVBox itself can't do this.

Where users came from: tutorial bloggers, plus a sister project that took off earlier

It never made GitHub trending. Searching X for "fnmedia" or "Feiniu media" returned nothing in the past 30 days, and there was no press coverage. Almost all traffic came from the Chinese NAS tutorial community:

  • Someone already scouted this path. The same playbook, injecting online content into the official FnOS app, already caught fire earlier, in early October, with fnmusic-ext on FnOS Music (Stringers' note in 10-13 says it was "blowing up this week"). The tutorial creator's 15st post covered music extensions, the 16nd covers video extensions, and the topic followed naturally from there.
  • The blogger has their own incentive. Each post in a tutorial series needs fresh material, and the installer doubles as traffic bait for the WeChat account. The author doesn't have to ask; the blogger writes it up on their own.
  • Third-party stores came knocking. The maintainer of the Moo store invited it to list in issue #12 (10-28), and 11-03 officially added it.

One detail is worth noting: 10-18, the day after the repo was created, v0.1.3 was already downloaded 670 times, before stars had taken off. The earliest users probably came from the Feiniu forum or group chats, though I couldn't pin down which.

Is anyone actually using it?

Downloads are a more accurate signal than stars. Across 11-06,82 releases, the project has 43,175 downloads on GitHub (11-06). Each version gets at least 230 downloads, and major versions get 1,000 to 2,300. The management page's "Update now" pulls the package straight from GitHub, so per-version downloads roughly equal active installs. My estimate is a few thousand machines (inference). The latest v0.2.73,132 full package has 824 downloads, while the slim build has only 43. Most people pick the full-featured one.

The author's iteration speed helps too: 20 days and 82 releases, covering danmaku, permission isolation, media library sorting, TV adaptation, and various subscription formats. Users' requests in issues went live within days. One issue was titled "Multiple updates a day, props to the diligent author" (#52,11-02). 11-03 At users' request, the author added a donation code, which is its only "income."

Growth is slowing: +144 in the last 7 days, versus +177 in the first 7 days, though still a dozen or two new stars a day. Only fork-based rewrites are following (e.g., cjm2004/fnmedia-ext-turbo, 2 stars); no independent competitor has appeared yet.

Its weak spots

  • It all depends on the official's goodwill. The README admits that if the official trim.media upgrades and its interfaces change, the plugin stops working. If the official side wants to block it, they can at any time.
  • The content sits in a copyright gray zone. A "users configure it themselves" disclaimer only goes so far, and shipping with routes built in is hard to explain. The risk of takedown is always there.
  • The circle is small. There are only so many Chinese NAS users, and the most popular tutorial has only about five thousand plays. A few hundred stars is roughly the ceiling for this kind of project, and it's hard to grow another order of magnitude.

If it were you

One-line verdict: what's worth copying is the approach of running native UI inside an official app, not the 'free movies' part. Building yet another FnOS video plugin is too late. The same approach on other closed systems can still pick up a wave of stars, but the ceiling is not high.

Who it's for: developers who know the internal interfaces of a NAS system or self-hosted media system, already move in the Chinese NAS circles and know a few tutorial creators, and want to rack up a few hundred stars and reputation within the scene in 20 days.

Who it's not for: people aiming for thousands or tens of thousands of stars (that scale is what general-purpose web projects like LibreTV reach); people unwilling to touch the copyright gray zone, or unwilling to keep adapting to each official release.

How to do it:

  1. Switch the host. Ugreen, Zspace, Synology Video Station, and Emby / Jellyfin virtual libraries all have room, as long as the official app has a TV client and a local service can be taken over.
  2. Switch the content. FnOS music already has a plugin and so does video, but photo albums, audiobooks, podcasts, and live streams haven't been built into the official app yet.
  3. Copy its three product decisions: don't modify official files, and disabling it restores everything; it works right after install with no setup; server-side parsing so every client gets new features for free.
  4. Think it through on 'built-in content' first. You could skip bundling resource sites and ship only the framework, which means fewer copyright headaches, but retention would be much worse (inference).

How to get users: offer packages directly to tutorial creators who run series like 'FnOS / Ugreen app part N', with an installable build attached so they can use it to drive traffic; submit to third-party app stores (Moo, FnDepot, etc.); in the first two weeks, ship one or two builds a day, build whatever people ask for in issues, and let users write the good reviews for you.

When the window closes: Chinese NAS creators rotate topics roughly monthly. The current FnOS buzz runs from late October to early November, so a version for a new host should ship before year-end, before someone else builds the same thing for the next system.

Signs you've misread it: your target host changes its interface on an upgrade, or the vendor explicitly bans this kind of plugin; after two weeks, no tutorial creator wants to cover it; or downloads come in but stars stay in the dozens, meaning this crowd grabs packages but doesn't star. In that case, don't keep building for stars.

Why fnmedia-ext (FnOS Video online resource extension) took off

  • Repo: github.com/yujian0815/fnmedia-ext (author yujian0815, with only this one repo under their name)
  • Repo created 2026-10-17; as of 2026-11-06 it had 384 stars (GitHub API, same day), 67 forks, and issue numbers up to 78; a total of 82 Releases shipped (v0.1.2 → v0.2.73), several versions a day over 20 days.
  • In one line: an FPK plugin for fnOS (the FnOS NAS system). It takes over the official 'Video (trim.media)' Unix Socket and injects online titles from Apple CMS resource sites / TVBox subscriptions into the official App's native search and media library home (4 Douban chart libraries + 4 broad category libraries), played with FnOS's built-in player. FnOS Video works on the web, phone, TV, and Apple TV clients.

1. Verdict

The reason it took off: it put 'free online video' inside the official video App that hundreds of thousands of FnOS users use every day. Users don't need to open a separate web page, install Docker, or switch players. Install one FPK, open the video App they already have, and see a 'web-wide library'. The FnOS TV at home gets it too.

What makes it 'install and watch' for beginners is that it preloads 11 Apple CMS resource sites (Baofeng, Feifan, Liangzi, Wuji, Guangsu, Ruyi, Jisu, Xinlang, Dianying Tiantang, 360 and others; see proxy/providers.py, DEFAULT_SOURCES), plus a 'one-click import' Fantasy Hard subscription. The README says 'no built-in resource database, and no answers on resource site addresses', but the code ships with lines out of the box and offers 'restore defaults'. nas123's tutorial says, verbatim: 'Settings can be left completely unchanged; just open FnOS Video and it works.' The recall card says it 'deliberately does not provide resource sites', and this contradicts the code.

Where users came from: one line of Chinese NAS tutorial creators. nas123.cc's posts (10-28; getting the package requires following the Official Account) and the same person's Bilibili videos 'FnOS tutorial 16' (10-29,5,256 plays, 207 favorites) carried it out of the circle, right when the star curve was steepest, 10-27 to 10-30. Others had already walked this path: the sister 'embedded in official app' FnOS music extension fnmusic-ext had its own run on Bilibili and Smzdm in early October.

  • Download counts show real usage better than stars: the 82 Releases have 43,175 cumulative downloads (GitHub releases API, 11-06). Each version has at least 230~300 downloads, with major versions at 1,000~2,300 (v0.2.64 2,300, v0.2.72 2,098). The admin page has 'check for updates, click update now' and pulls update packages straight from the GitHub Release (proxy/updater.py), so per-version downloads roughly track active installs, estimated in the thousands (estimate, unverified). The download_count recorded in the Moo index at 11-01 is 11,696.
  • 11-06 latest version v0.2.73: the full package (132MB, bundles the redroid Android runtime to run 'hardened' TVBox crawlers) has 824 downloads, the lite package 43. Most people install the full-featured big package.

Takeaway: "free online video aggregation" is a crowded old niche (LibreTV and LunaTV both have 10k+ stars). fnmedia-ext's spot was empty because nobody had built this into Feiniu's official video app's native interface.

4. Growth levers (evidence)

  1. NAS tutorial bloggers' posts and videos (confirmed): nas123.cc part 16 (10-28) and Bilibili's _超超不吵吵 "Feiniu tutorial 16" (10-29) are the same numbered series, and the previous part, 15, covered fnmusic-ext. nas123 tells readers to "follow the WeChat Official Account and reply 'Feiniu video plugin' to get the installer", using this plugin to drive traffic to their own account. Later came Interesting Resource House (two Bilibili videos), the Xiaohongshu account "闲人的AI手记", and SMZDM follow-ups.
  2. Listed in third-party FPK stores (confirmed): the maintainer of the Moo store reached out on their own (issue #12), and author 11-03 added moo.json and automatic sync. 1day.vip and nas123 have both written "Feiniu third-party app center comparisons", and stores like FnDepot, Moo, and fnOS Apps are distribution channels themselves.
  3. Riding the sister project's momentum (a confirmed time sequence; whether it was deliberate is unverified): fnmusic-ext's October initially "went viral one after another" on Bilibili and SMZDM (post.smzdm.com/p/a82p3ekq), so the tutorial blogger naturally wrote the video version next. gzywd (fnmusic-ext's author) also forked fnmedia-ext.
  4. Very frequent releases plus responsive issue handling (confirmed): 20 releases in 82 days. Danmaku, permission isolation, TV-side adaptation, media library sorting, and Fan Tai Ying / cat sources / T4 subscriptions: feature requests raised in issues went live within days (e.g. #14 permissions, #19 sorting, #28 payment QR code). A user spontaneously posted "multiple updates a day, kudos to the diligent author" (#52). External contributors also submitted PRs (@wab201's T4 subscription series #59–#63).
  5. No Hacker News, major X accounts, media coverage, or GitHub trending found (data card: trending_days_any=0; x-radar searches for "fnmedia" and "飞牛影视" returned 30 results over 0 days). linux.do requires login to search, so whether it was posted there is unverified.

5. Why it took off (point by point)

  • Piggybacking on the entry point: Feiniu Video is a "nearly must-install" official app for fnOS users (in the words of Zhihu and CSDN tutorials), and it already has web, mobile, TV, and Apple TV clients. Injecting once on the server takes effect on all clients at once. Issues discuss the TV and Apple TV clients a lot (#1 #7 #10 #37 #48 #53 #66 #68), showing users came specifically for "watching directly on the TV."
  • Zero configuration: ships with 11 built-in resource sites, plus one-click Fan Tai Ying, so there's content out of the box. Comparable web sites (like LibreTV) by default make users enter their own sources and deploy Docker themselves.
  • Non-invasive and reversible: the socket is taken over via renameat2 atomic renaming, and disabling it hands the official service back. The binary, nginx, and database are not modified. Users who fear breaking their NAS system have a lower barrier to trying it.
  • Content layer directly borrows proven approaches: the ranking layer copies LibreTV's "Douban chart display + on-demand source search and playback"; the subscription layer is compatible with TVBox / Fan Tai Ying / T4 / cat sources. The sources and configs that the Chinese pirated-VOD ecosystem accumulated over years were all pulled in.
  • Timing: fnOS users have kept growing through 2026 (ARM beta 2026-02 in public testing), 飞牛 launched a music app in September, and 飞牛 TV is rolling out across platforms. In October, fnmusic-ext already educated the market: the idea of "adding online sources to the official app" is something users and creators have already heard.
  • No revenue cannibalization worry: open source and free, with only voluntary donations (DONATE.md). Copyright risk for content providers is shielded by a disclaimer that "users configure it themselves."

VI. Differentiation

The differentiation is not in content, nor in the player, but in distribution placement: it is the only solution that builds an online library into Feiniu's official video app's native interface (search results, media library home page, playback history and resume, multi-user permissions). Local and online content sit in the same interface and the same player, so TV users don't need to install a separate app. This difference is the main reason it took off. The same capabilities (LibreTV, TVBox) already existed and have higher star counts, but each requires a separate entry point.

Secondary differentiation: server-side unified conversion of TVBox subscriptions (including running hardened jars via redroid), so Apple TV / iOS can also use TVBox sources. This is something TVBox itself can't offer.

7. Visibility and copycats

  • Visibility: spreading within a small circle. The Chinese NAS tutorial community has covered it: nas123, 3~4 Bilibili tutorials (up to 5,256 views), 1 Xiaohongshu posts, and 1 SMZDM articles mentioning it in passing. No media coverage, X discussion, or trending; revenue is not public, only a donation QR code.
  • Copycats: cjm2004/fnmedia-ext-turbo (11-03, a playback-startup-optimized version based on v0.2.39, 2 stars); hssing825/fnmedia-ext republished v2.2.2 with only a version number change; kaynai1 and other forks are re-publishing releases; 67 forks in total. No independent competitor yet.

VIII. Takeaways

  1. Piggyback on the official app's native interface: for closed-source NAS official suites with local services (video, music, photos), inject content at the socket or reverse-proxy layer. Users don't change their habits, and every client benefits for free. The same approach could transfer to UGREEN, UGOS, Synology Video Station, and Emby / Jellyfin virtual libraries.
  2. Move the client ecosystem to the server: TVBox sources and configs only run on Android. Once parsed uniformly on the NAS, they can be output to Apple TV, iOS, and web.
  3. Usable out of the box: the default config already includes content, with the disclaimer stated up front. Compared with "have users configure sources themselves," the conversion rate is an order of magnitude higher (this is an inference).
  4. Use tutorial bloggers' serialized topics: bloggers making "Feiniu app part N" need fresh material and will hand out installers to drive traffic to their accounts. For people making Feiniu plugins, proactively supplying content to these bloggers is very cost-effective.
  5. Adjacent monetization gaps: source lists, subscription maintenance, TV-side experience optimization, paid stable sources. Nobody is collecting money for these yet, but all of them sit in the copyright gray area.

9. What I'm still unsure about

  • Within 10-18 v0.1.3 it had 670 downloads and 10-27's first wave of +29 stars. Where the initial seed users came from: Feiniu forum, QQ groups, and linux.do could not be verified.
  • How many of the download counts come from CI, mirror sites, and third-party store crawlers: Moo indexes GitHub direct links, which get counted as downloads.
  • Feiniu's official stance: after an official trim.media upgrade, if the signature constants or the API change, the project breaks (the README admits this itself); if the official side blocks it, or treats the online sources as a violation, the project would stop. Copyright risk for the resource sites could also lead to takedowns.
  • nas123 and Bilibili _超超不吵吵 are the same person. This is inferred from the series numbering and unverified.
