A repackaging repo that was never updated still got 1700 stars: what drove 红果鉴 / 真果鉴 was who linked to it

A GitHub account with just one repo uploaded someone else's source code packaged, and released an installable package on the afternoon of Sep 26, 2026; it hasn't been touched since. Six weeks later it has about 1700 stars and over 500 forks, and the installable package has been downloaded about 78k times. The same source code has at least seven other repackaging repos, all with far fewer stars. Below: what it is, where the stars came from, why this particular one, and what you can learn from it about getting stars for your own project.

An X post urging people to "take over maintenance"

On the morning of Oct 16, 2026, at 11:48 a.m., an X resource account called "周览资源" posted: "Recommending an open-source project: 真果鉴 (guoapp), a multi-platform short-drama player built with Flutter + Go. 红果, 黄果, 黄豆源."

The second half is telling: "The biggest shame is that source compatibility and playback stability still have room for improvement. AI coding is so strong now that you can try using Claude Code or Codex to take over maintenance, fixing broken interfaces, improving the player, and optimizing cross-platform experience. Friends with development skills can fork a copy and keep polishing this project!" It ends with the link github.com/zhoufuweigg/guoapp.

The post got about 16.7k views (as seen by 11-06). The next day, another account, @justloveabit, posted "Say goodbye to drama ads! A purely local streaming film & TV tool", with the link in the comments. A day after that, on Oct 18, the repo gained 79 stars in one day, its biggest single-day gain to date.

A resource account said in the post outright that "this project has no one maintaining it, who will take it over?", and readers still went and starred and forked it. That's this project's story: the stars came for a link, not for a maintainer.

What it is

Hongguo Duanju is ByteDance's free short-drama app, which makes money from ads in exchange for being free; media reports put daily active users above 100 million (about 168M, unverified). 红果鉴 is a third-party client for it: no splash or pre-roll ads, you can choose video quality when downloading, batch-download up to 50 episodes at once, and there's danmaku. Phone, Windows, and Android TV share one codebase (iOS has only an unsigned package). The UI is written in Flutter and the core in Go. The README says "source requests, parsing, downloads, and playback all happen on the device, with no dependence on a self-hosted server."

It has two versions, differing in whether a parameter is passed at build time:

The hidden source sites only appear in "Source Management" after entering a password. What their content is wasn't verified (judging from the names and circle talk, some of it is presumably adult-oriented short drama).

The first line of the README is a disclaimer: "This project's source code comes from the famous 鱼佬 (the original author) online. I just packaged it and tested it for fun, for my own use. No availability guaranteed; the repo could be deleted at any time." "鱼佬" refers to fish2018, the author of the PanSou netdisk search tool (15k stars) and a batch of TVBox film and TV tools, who is well known in the "free film and TV" circles. However, no project under the name fish2018 can be found; the authors in the commit history are x315600 and zihen423. Whether this was really written by 鱼佬 is unverified.

How the stars grew

GitHub star count (daily figures, as of 11-06):

On 11-06, the GitHub page showed 1697 stars and 507 forks. What actually indicates the heat is the download count: the installable package in the only Release has been downloaded about 78k times in total (GitHub, 11-06), over forty times the star count. The all-sources 真果鉴 has about 6 times the downloads of the Hongguo-only 红果鉴; most people want "all sources."

Links came from these places:

• Resource accounts on X: the two posts at the start.
• YouTube and Bilibili tutorials: a YouTube channel called 大宇的电视分享号 posted "Short-drama fans, bookmark this! The 红果鉴 App has tons of content, updates fast, and its filters are a godsend. Works on Android, Windows and iOS", which has about 11K views. The Bilibili video's title "懂得都懂" (you'll know if you know) refers to the hidden site sources.
• Download sites and cracked-software channels: download sites such as downkuai, 3DM, and j9p have indexed the installable packages; downkuai's description says it "completely removes splash ads, pre-roll ads and push pop-ups"; Telegram channels like "APP喵 - 破解软件资源" forwarded it; CSDN has an article "红果鉴/真果鉴深度评测" ("In-depth review of Hongguo Jian / Zhenguo Jian").
• Author reputation: the README mentions "鱼佬" (Fish), a name that carries weight in this crowd.

Without Hacker News, without a GitHub trending placement, without any press coverage. The people starring it are ordinary binge-watchers looking for an "ad-free magic tool."

Why this one, out of all of them

The same source code showed up as at least seven repackaged repos between Sep 22 and Oct 7: enginJie/guoapp, xiaoguan521/guoapp (created even earlier than this one), kuoluoss/zhenguojian, HankLiy/guoapp, heijiji0527/guoapp, each sitting at 75 to 200 stars. zhoufuweigg's copy got the most, for a simple reason:

It ships with installable packages. Starting with the Sep 26 push, it had GitHub Actions set up so every push automatically builds APKs for three Android architectures, a Windows ZIP, an unsigned iOS package, and creates the Release. Resource accounts want links that let people download right away.

Complete README. A feature table, a source table, a platform status table, and clear instructions for compiling both versions and for forks to build their own packages via Actions. The screenshots look great in a post.

It just happened to get picked. When resource accounts posted screenshots and links, this was the one they chose. Afterward, nearly all the stars came from the long tail of that link: posts, tutorials, and download sites kept pointing to the address even though the repo owner never touched the code again.

So it took off mostly because of distribution luck, with the code accounting for only a small part.

Its problems, and the people taking its spot

It stopped updating. The resource account itself admitted in a post that source compatibility and playback stability had issues, and when the API broke, nobody fixed it.

The people taking it over have already arrived. Xanerix/guoapp was created in Oct 2, states "adapted from the fish2018 source code", has kept shipping, 11-06 is now at v1.0.4, with a dozen-plus Releases; it has a Telegram discussion group and an update channel attached. It 11-06 has 949 stars, just over half of zhoufuweigg's count, but it gained about 365 stars in the last 7 days, two and a half times as fast as the latter. The resource account said "fork it and keep polishing", and someone already has.

The whole category was crowded early. From mid-September to October, a dozen-plus Hongguo third-party clients appeared on GitHub (stars and downloads as of 11-06):

The risk hangs over it. The content belongs to Hongguo, the API is reverse-engineered, and the README itself says "the repo may be deleted at any time." I have not found whether ByteDance has moved against projects like this; but once they do, this entire wave goes down together. Add the hidden sources it contains, and this is not a project anyone who wants a good reputation should put their name on.

If it were you

D. Learn from it, but don't build an eighth repackaged repo. This project's stars were not earned, they came from a single link; the same code in a different repo gets only a hundred or two hundred stars. The content belongs to someone else, the API is reverse-engineered, and there are dubious sources, so the stars and reputation can all vanish with one takedown. The only things worth taking away are two tactics.

Who it's for: developers who want their open-source project seen by ordinary users rather than programmers. What to study is its distribution, not its subject matter.

Who it's not for: anyone trying to build yet another Hongguo client (a dozen-plus rivals are competing, the top release repo has 1.79M downloads, and the same-source Xanerix has already claimed the "taking over maintenance" slot); anyone who cares about their resume and credit (this kind of project only hurts a resume); and anyone hoping to earn stars through code quality, since in this category stars have little to do with code.

How to do it: pick a legitimate subject and copy its two strengths. (1) Set up GitHub Actions in the very first push so platform installers and Releases are built automatically, making "click the link and download" the default; write the README like a download page so anyone can see which package fits which device. (2) Turn forks into distribution nodes: document how to build your own package from a fork in one step, so others can modify, reskin, and ship their own builds, and every fork adds another link pointing back to you.

How to get stars: for tools aimed at ordinary users, stars come from resource accounts, tutorial videos, and download sites, not from tech communities. Once it's ready, prepare screenshots, a one-line pitch, and a direct link, then proactively send them to Chinese resource accounts and YouTube/Bilibili creators who make "XX app recommendation" videos. They need material, and one post can keep you going for months.

Window timing: this Hongguo lane has no real window; it could shut down at any time. If you build in a different subject, there is no hard deadline.

Signs you're reading this wrong: (1) In two or three months this whole Hongguo wave has not been dealt with, and continuously maintained repos like Xanerix keep gaining stars steadily. That would mean the platform is tolerating it, and "take over a project the resource accounts made famous but nobody maintains" is a position that can be copied. (2) You build a legitimate tool with this playbook, with Actions packaging, a README, and screenshots all ready, and in three months not one resource account is willing to share it. That would mean this kind of growth relied on the appeal of "free Hongguo" itself, not on the playbook.
