# Someone else's fork, a "we heard your questions" post, and an early-leaked Zelda: Lichii gained nearly 2000 stars in six days

**What it is** An open-source Nintendo Switch 2 PC emulator, a fork of Eden-NX2 / Eglantine, with ready-made builds for Windows, Linux and macOS.

**Why it took off** The Switch 2 was cracked in late October, and the first wave of emulators were hard to use. The author posted on X saying he had fixed the 20GB memory leak and other issues and asked for stars. Then the Zelda: Majora's Mask Remake leaked before launch and ran on it, and every media headline named Lichii.

**C** **How you could follow** Don't make another Switch 2 fork; the first round has already split. Copy the approach: within 3–5 days after the next platform event, fork the first version that runs, fix only the few things users complain about most, pick a name, ship full-platform builds, and post a checklist on X for each version asking for stars tied to a hot topic; ideally pick a title that avoids copyright exposure.

Grade C: the approach is clear and copyable, but this target is already crowded. Dozens of forks appeared within a week, the upstream and Lichii took most of the stars, and latecomers got a couple hundred. Add Nintendo's DMCA risk, and following this one isn't worth it. Public / widely discussed

zortos293/Lichii is a Nintendo Switch 2 PC emulator, but it wasn't written from scratch; it's a fork of a fork. The author had no project over 100 stars before, created the repo in Oct 31, and it stopped at 1,973 stars after 11-06 with 1,258 of them added on the last day. What made it take off wasn't technology. It was three things: he went first to fix the problems users hurt most when the platform was just cracked; every version targeted a popular game; and the Majora's Mask Remake leaked early, so media headlines used his name. Below: how it took off, who is competing, and whether you can still use this path.

### A checkmark post on X

In 2026 Oct 31 late 22:38 (UTC), a developer named Zortos posted this on X:

> "I've heard all the Switch 2 emulator complaints and fixed them 🛠️ My own Eglantine fork is out: ✅ Memory leak fixed: usage is 4–5GB, no longer 20GB+ ✅ Textures fixed in many games ✅ Color issue fixed (HDR settings in docked mode) ✅ Performance improvements ✅ More games boot, including Welcome Tour. Download and try it, and give the repo a ⭐, it really helps 🙏"

The video attached to the post now shows "disabled due to a copyright holder report." The replies are real: someone said "Original Eglantine runs Xenoblade for me at 50 fps, yours only 15 fps lol," someone in Spanish said "I've tried every emulator, only yours got my game running," and someone asked "can you make a Linux version?"

At this point he had about 1,800 followers on X (his own later account), and his 70 GitHub repos had fewer than 60 stars combined. A week later he had 5,000 followers and a simulator that media would name-check.

### What it is, and where it came from

The Switch 2 was cracked in late October 2026, about 16 months after launch (wccftech 10-31: "More than a week ago, the Switch 2 was finally cracked"). On Oct 29, the author of the long-running Switch emulator Eden released an experimental branch, Eden-NX2, that can boot Xenoblade Chronicles and Donkey Kong Bananza. The same day, Djihads80/Eglantine built on it, adding FSR3 frame generation and a batch of fixes, and wccftech and XDA covered it first.

Lichii is a fork of Eglantine. The README is candid: "built on Eglantine, Eden, yuzu and Sudachi," the repo "still keeps the historical Eglantine name," and the release page sits under zortos293/Eglantine. So its base is identical to a dozen other forks. What differs is only who got popular games working first, who shipped fastest, and who shipped the most complete builds.

It did ship thoroughly: every build had Windows (two compile types), Linux x64 / ARM, macOS arm64, plus an auto-updater. In 5 days it went from build-70 to build-88. The donation note in the README quietly explains where the speed came from: "Donations are used to pay for the AI tools and build machines used to develop this open-source project."

### How the stars came

| Timeline | Stars | What happened |
|---|---|---|
| 10-31 | 0 | Repo created; the author posts the X thread above |
| 11-03 ~ 04 | — | build-70 fixes Kirby Air Riders and Donkey Kong Bananza; renamed to Lichii, logo drawn by artist YOB; DSOGaming reports it can run Star Fox Remake |
| 11-04 | 586 | Majora's Mask Remake leaks one day early; CentroLeaks posts on X footage of it running in the emulator with visual glitches |
| 11-05 | 715 | Launch day. Notebookcheck: "already running on PC before release"; VideoCardz: "already able to boot on a Switch 2 emulator"; TechPowerUp: "running on PC on launch day"; DSOGaming: "Lichii can boot and run Zelda." The headlines all named Lichii. |
| 11-06 | 1,973 | Single-day +1,258; forks went from 58 to 279; build-80 / 83 / 88 followed, fixing foliage, glowing doorways and AMD black screens in Majora's Mask. |

(Star and fork counts are GitHub daily data.)

After the media came the amplifiers: repost accounts on X posted "LICHII SWITCH 2 EMULATOR BUILD 75 RELEASED!", someone posted "Majora's Mask Remake already running at 60 fps on PC"; YouTube had RTX 5080 tests and tutorials on "how to play Majora's Mask Remake on PC"; r/emulators, r/pcmasterrace and r/PiratedGames on Reddit all had hands-on posts. Searching TikTok turns up nothing about it; the heat stayed in emulator and hardware-media circles.

Note one detail: Notebookcheck said at the time that recordings were "badly stuttering, jumping between 20 and 60 fps, colors washed out to the point Link was often hard to see." DSOGaming also wrote that "only some Lichii forks can currently run Majora's Mask, and the official version may not yet." The YouTube RTX 5080 test actually used someone else's "Selevet build." So "playable" was far from achieved, but the name "Lichii" had already been written into every headline.

### Why this one and not the other forks

**One: the first post aimed straight at the pain point.** Original Eglantine needed 20GB+ of memory, so many PCs simply couldn't run it. He didn't explain the architecture. He listed five checkmarked fixes and ended by asking for stars. Every version after followed the same format: one or two popular games targeted per release, so repost accounts and media could pass it along as is.

**Two, it has a name you can put in a headline.** "Some Eglantine fork" doesn't fit in a headline. After renaming it Lichii and adding a logo, media can just write "Lichii emulator". DSOGaming even counted other people's forks as "Lichii forks", so the name's benefit went to it.

**Three, it collided with a big game that leaked early.** The Ocarina of Time remake 11-04 leaked, 11-05 released, and "playable on PC before launch" is the headline media love. 11-06's single-day star gain was 11-04 times the 10, and the timing lines up perfectly.

**Four, speed.** 5 days, 18 builds. AI tools and a build machine made one build a day the norm. In a niche where everyone has the same code, whoever ships the patch first owns the news of the day.

No sign of star farming: the curve matches each media write-up's timing, and the author just openly asked for stars. But most of these stars came from players, not developers.

### Who's competing

| Project | Stars (11-06) | Compared with Lichii |
|---|---|---|
| Djihads80/Eglantine | 4,265 / 484 fork, +731 that day | Direct upstream. Covered first by media for running Horse World at full speed, yet still has more than twice Lichii's stars |
| Eden-NX2 | Not on the main GitHub site (mirror has about 51 stars) | The base for all the forks. Doesn't chase any single game |
| sylvieistaken/selevet-eglantine | 138 | Tunes specifically for the Ocarina of Time remake. The YouTube tests used it |
| EglantinePS5, Eglantine-ZendNevs, MythosOfs/Orchid, Lichii-Android, eden-nx2-android, etc. | 50–200 | Switch platforms (PS5, Android) or tweak frame rate |
| pound-emu/pound, 0xNikilite/oboromi | 1,242 / 1,403, daily gains close to zero | Switch 2 emulator written from scratch, can't run commercial games |

Within a week, the same Eden-NX2 code was split into a dozen-plus forks. The first two (Eglantine, Lichii) took most of the stars, and the rest stalled at a hundred or two hundred. It's a fork arms race, and the first round is already over.

Behind all of them is Nintendo. It sued and shut down yuzu in 2024, and in 2026 in February a wave of Switch emulators were taken down from GitHub. Lichii's first post's video was already removed after a copyright claim, and the Ocarina of Time footage used game files leaked before launch. This repo could disappear at any time.

### If it were you

**C: You can learn something, but following this one isn't worth it.** Making another Switch 2 emulator fork is already late. The first round was taken by Eglantine and Lichii, latecomers get a hundred or two hundred stars, and the whole category has Nintendo's DMCA hanging over it. What's worth taking is the playbook, not this topic.

**Who it suits** : developers who know C++ and can quickly locate bugs in someone else's big codebase, who want a short-term project to reach a thousand stars and pick up X followers along the way, and who can accept the repo being taken down someday.

**Who it doesn't suit** : anyone using it as a long-term portfolio piece (a fork's results can be overtaken by upstream or other forks at any time, and it can be taken down); anyone doing open source under a real name or company identity who cares about legal risk; anyone who doesn't post on X or Reddit (half of this playbook is posting).

**How to do it** : carry its playbook over to the next platform event:

1. **Wait for the event** : a platform gets cracked, a major interface suddenly opens up, or an popular closed-source tool gets an open-source alternative. Within days of the event, someone will certainly release a first version that "runs but is hard to use".

2. **Fix only the three to five things everyone complains about most** : count the complaints in the first version's issues, X replies, and Reddit threads, and fix the most common. Memory, crashes, install failures, and missing packages for a given platform are the fixes people feel most.

3. **Pick a name, make a logo, ship packages for every platform** : don't call it "xx's fork", give it a name that fits in a headline; provide ready-made packages for Windows, Linux, and macOS.

4. **Aim each version at a hot topic** : write release notes as a checkmark list, and each time name something people are waiting for. Use AI tools and automated builds to compress releases to one a day.

Versions that avoid game copyright are worth more: the same "fix it after the first version and beat others to it" move can apply to an inference tool right after an open-source model is released, or to the first batch of clients after a new API opens. The risk is much smaller.

**How to get users** : on X, a checklist post for each version with a clear ask for stars at the end; post demo videos to the matching Reddit communities; hardware and game media (DSOGaming, Notebookcheck, VideoCardz, TechPowerUp) watch GitHub for projects like this on their own, no pitching needed. Real surges come from a big day (a major game launch or a big release), so get the version ready a few days ahead.

**How early is early enough** : for this Switch 2 round, the window has basically closed. For the playbook itself, the window is the first 3–5 days after the next platform event; after a week, the first round of forks has already split the attention.

**What would show you read it wrong** : ① Nintendo sends a DMCA to Eglantine or Lichii and the whole Switch 2 fork family disappears together, meaning the risk outweighs the reward on this path; ② conversely, if a month later Lichii is still around and rose another round when Nintendo's next big game launched, the category holds people longer than expected, and a late fork that does best on one particular game still has a chance; ③ if you follow the playbook at the next platform event, fix the pain points, post, and get under 300 stars in a week, the audience for that event isn't on GitHub, so stop doubling down.

## zortos293/Lichii: a Switch 2 emulator fork, why did it get nearly 2000 stars in 6 days

### One line

Lichii is a fork of Eglantine. Eglantine itself was split from Eden / yuzu / Sudachi, and is a Nintendo Switch 2 emulator (C++, GPL-3.0). It took off first because it hit a platform event: the Switch 2 was cracked in late 2026-10, and within a week the first batch of PC emulators appeared. Then the author Zortos used a very high release frequency on X (from build 7x to build 88 in 5 days), beating everyone to fixes for memory leaks, textures, and colors, and was the first to get the 11-05 launch title, the Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake, running in-game. DSOGaming, TechPowerUp, XDA, Reddit, and YouTube repost accounts covered it heavily, pushing it to +1258 stars in a single day.

### Data

- GitHub repo (github repo repo_day): 11-04 586 stars → 11-05 715 → 11-06 1973 (single-day +1258), forks 49 → 279, open issues 23 → 56. Repo created 2026-10-31 14:17.

- Originally zortos293/Eglantine, later renamed Lichii. The README still says "The repository still uses its historical Eglantine name", and release links still point to zortos293/Eglantine/releases (GitHub redirects automatically).

- Releases: the release page has build-70 / 75 / 80 / 83 / 88. Provides Windows (MSVC, MinGW PGO), Linux (x64/ARM AppImage), and macOS arm64 packages, plus an auto-updater (github.com/zortos293/Lichii/releases, read by 2026-11-06).

- Author X @Zortosdev says "A few days ago I was at 1.8k followers", now 5k (X post, 2026-11 early). GitHub 259 followers, 70 repos; excluding Lichii, the repos' stars total about 58, with no earlier hit project.

### Timeline (platform event)

1. Around 2026-10-20: the Switch 2 got hacked, about 16.5 months after its 2025-06 launch (wccftech 2026-10-31: "Just over a week ago, the Nintendo Switch 2 was finally hacked").

2. 10-29: Eden-NX2 (Eden's experimental Switch 2 branch, by author roka/Takoroka) went public, and could boot Horse World and Donkey Kong Bananza (TweakTown, shattered.io, neogaf 10-30).

3. 10-29: Djihads80/Eglantine built it on top of Eden-NX2, adding FSR3 frame generation and a batch of fixes. wccftech and XDA 10-31 covered it as running Mount & Blade at full speed. 4265 stars (GitHub repo, flagged as suspicious: a new account's single repo blowing up).

4. 10-31 22:38: Zortos posted on X: "I listened to all your issues with the Switch 2 emulator, and I fixed them… My own fork of Eglantine is out: memory leak fix (4-5GB instead of 20GB+), textures, HDR colors, performance, more games now boot… drop a ⭐ on the repo" (x.com/Zortosdev/status/2116661152495104343). The video in the post was taken down after a rights-holder complaint.

5. 11-03~04: build-70 (Kirby Air Riders and DK Bananza fixes), build-75. After the rename to Lichii, DSOGaming reported it "can now run Star Fox Remake".

6. 11-05: Ocarina of Time Remake was dumped on launch day. The Lichii build-75 boots it and gets it to the game screen (release notes call it "The green-hat kid adventure" to dodge the trademark). X repost account @soflysojoe: "NEW LICHII SWITCH 2 EMULATOR BUILD 75 RELEASED!" TechPowerUp: "Zelda: Ocarina of Time Remake Runs on PC Through Switch 2 Emulator on Launch Day"; DSOGaming: "Lichii Can Boot and Run the Legend of Zelda"; emergent.sh (11-05); XDA Facebook: "Lichii emulator seems to be at the forefront of Switch 2 PC emulation". Reddit r/emulators, r/pcmasterrace and r/PiratedGames have gameplay posts for Ocarina of Time Remake, and YouTube has RTX 5080 test videos and "How to Play Zelda OoT Remake on PC" install guides.

7. 11-06: +1258 stars in a single day, forks up to 279. build-80/83/88 keeps fixing Ocarina foliage, gate glow and AMD black screens, and adds a Dynamic FPS patch.

### Competitors

| Name | Form | Launched | Scale | How it differs from Lichii |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Eden-NX2(Takoroka / roka) | Open source, self-hosted at git.eden-emu.dev | 2026-10-29 | Press called it "the first public Switch 2 PC emulator"; GitHub mirror ZuanCrisp/Eden-NX2 51 stars | Upstream, not on the main GitHub site; slow release cadence, doesn't chase individual new games |
| Djihads80/Eglantine | Open source GitHub | 2026-10-29 | 4265 stars / 484 forks (GitHub repo 11-06), gaining 731 per day | Lichii's direct upstream. It got the press first (Mario Kart at full speed). Lichii overtook it on talk by fixing memory leaks, adding new-game compatibility and shipping multi-platform packages |
| pound-emu/pound | Open source | 2025-06 | 1242 stars, daily gain 4 | A Switch 1/2 emulator written from scratch, far from running commercial games |
| 0xNikilite/oboromi | Open source Rust | 2025-06 | 1403 stars, daily gain 0 | Proof of concept, not playable |
| PokeDinner(Eglantine fork) | git.eden-emu.dev | 2026-11 first | Not verified | Same Eglantine lineage; Reddit users use it to compare against Lichii |
| sylvieistaken/selevet-eglantine | Open source | 2026-11-01 | 138 stars | An Eglantine build tuned specifically for Ocarina; YouTube videos label it "Lichii (Selevet build)" |
| ZendNevs/Eglantine-ZendNevs, MythosOfs/Orchid, heydemoura/EglantinePS5, JaviiDeveloper/eden-nx2-android, Lichii-Android | Open-source fork | 11-01~11-06 | 50–200 stars | Ports to other platforms (PS5, Android) or tweaks frame rate; an order of magnitude smaller in scale |
| Hassaku-Emulator | Open source | 2025-07 | 91 stars | An old repo for "the world's first Switch 2 emulator"; inactive |
| Nintendo's official releases | — | — | — | Offers no PC build; has faced repeated DMCA takedowns (2024 the yuzu lawsuit, 2026-02 mass GitHub takedowns of Switch emulators) |

Takeaway: the same Eden-NX2 code was split into a dozen-plus forks within a week; the race is a "fork arms race". Lichii's upstreams Djihads80 and Eglantine still have more than twice its star count.

### Growth channels

- **The author posts on X and openly asks for stars** (verified): every build gets a post with a checklist, ending "drop a ⭐ on the repo, it really helps". Followers grew from 1.8k to 5k.

- **Riding the new-game launch hype** (verified): "The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Remake" launched 11-05, and on launch day you could already get into the game on Lichii, catching the press headline angle "runs on PC the day it launches". Lichii's +1258 stars in a single day (11-06) line up with this.

- **Game and hardware press coverage** (verified): DSOGaming (two articles), TechPowerUp, XDA (Facebook), emergent.sh.

- **Reddit and YouTube repost tests** (verified): r/emulators, r/pcmasterrace, r/PiratedGames, r/EmulationOnAndroid, r/switch2emu. YouTube has RTX 5080 benchmarks and install tutorials (third-party channels). The author also runs a YouTube channel, youtube.com/Zortos; whether they posted videos is unverified.

- **Repost accounts on X** (verified): news repost accounts like @soflysojoe share build updates.

- **TikTok** : a TikHub search for "Lichii emulator" returned nothing; no TikTok spread found.

- Monetization: the README lists crypto donation addresses (SOL / ETH / BTC / BNB / Polygon) and GitHub Sponsors, saying "Donations help pay for the AI tools and build machines". So the author is using AI tools to speed up development, which fits the pace of 5 days and 18 builds.

### Why it took off

1. **Timing** : the first PC emulators appeared a week after the Switch 2 crack, and demand was 16 months of pent-up interest. After yuzu and Ryujinx were taken down, everyone was looking for "which fork runs the most games".

2. **Fixing the pain users complain about most** : original Eglantine used over 20GB of memory; Lichii cut it to 4–5GB. It fixed textures and HDR colors, and the first post was "I heard your problems".

3. **Runs new games on launch day** : "Ocarina of Time Remake" reached gameplay on launch day, the headline the press loved. Stars in a single day were nearly 10 times 11-06's 11-04.

4. **Release speed and coverage** : build-70 → 88 within 5 days. Each release ships two Windows compile variants, Linux x64/ARM and macOS arm64, plus an auto-updater, which lowers the barrier for ordinary players.

5. **Branding** : renamed from "someone's Eglantine fork" to Lichii, with a commissioned logo and its own name, so press headlines can just say "Lichii emulator".

### Differentiation

The difference isn't architecture; every fork shares the Eden-NX2 / Eglantine base. What sets it apart is **who fixes popular games first, who ships fastest, and who packages most completely** . That's why it took off, but the edge is thin: the release notes say outright "The newer Frizti performance ports… and Dark's Ocarina Dynamic FPS patch are not included", showing forks are porting patches from each other, and DSOGaming notes "only certain Lichii forks can run OoT". The lead could be matched by another fork or the upstream at any time.

### Visibility

Widely covered: DSOGaming, TechPowerUp, XDA, several large Reddit threads, YouTube. The heat is mostly in gaming and emulator circles, not the developer community. No revenue involved. There are already many copycats (see the competitor table).

### What to borrow

- When a platform event hits (a crack, a launch, an API opening), immediately fork the existing project that already runs the game, fix only the 3–5 problems users complain about most in the comments, then post "I heard your problems".

- Write release notes as a checklist, each release targeting a popular game, so every update works as news material.

- Give it an independent name and a logo so press and repost accounts have a noun to write with.

- Use AI tools and CI to compress the release cycle to under a day per build.

### Uncertain

- Legal risk: Nintendo consistently pursues Switch emulators with DMCA takedowns and lawsuits. Videos in the X posts have already been removed on copyright complaints, and the repo could be taken down at any time.

- Showing Ocarina gameplay uses a dump that leaked on launch day, with a piracy backdrop (the r/PiratedGames thread).

- Which AI tools Zortos uses, and how much of the code is AI-written, is unverified.

- The size and videos of the author's YouTube channel were not checked.

- Upstream Djihads80/Eglantine carries a "new account, single-repo spike" suspicion flag; Lichii's star count has no such flag. The stargazer breakdown was not checked (GitHub API rate-limited at the time).
