# A Mac utility that turns hardware data into plain language, open source plus one-time purchase, treated as a craft project rather than a business

D

**Watch only: don't treat "translating hardware data into plain language" as a category you can copy in bulk, and certainly not as a business** It worked just once, and what drove it was the confusion over USB-C cables that everyone has in a drawer, not the format. The original author repeated it three times, and earlier similar tools shipped the same four-piece set without taking off. It's fine as a two-week project, provided you find a hardware confusion that has already been argued about on HN. Long shot · grade and headline derived from the full text · next review 12-01

| Background | macOS already exposes cable, port, and disk data; AI lets one person ship 20 releases in a day. |
|---|---|
| Upside | Turn the hardware data the system has but users can't read into plain language. Only one topic has really taken off: the USB-C cable. |
| Demand | A drawer full of identical-looking cables. But the second HN thread argued "reading a chip is not the same as testing a cable," and overstated wording gets called out fast. |
| Competition | The cost of copying is 'two dollars for 10 minutes': WhatCable had a Linux port the night it launched (307 stars). For something like System Data, there are already 5+ copies. |
| Revenue | WhatCable isn't public; estimated £1–30k over six months. Similar Mac apps on TrustMRR make a few hundred a month; the ones over $1K are all iPhone "find hidden cameras" apps |
| Growth | Show HN at 566 points → 20+ media mentions → #4 on PH that day. No ads in the Meta, TikTok or Google ad libraries; it ran entirely on organic traffic |
| Window | No event window. The USB-C cable topic is taken. For other topics, you need to find demand signals on HN first. |
| Who it's for | People who know Swift, have a day job, and want a portfolio piece that brings attention. Also people in repair / IT circles who know how common a particular hardware confusion is. |

右上:2025-06-27 Dan Gauthier 的 Show HN,4 分;右下:2026-05-01 Darryl Morley 的 Show HN,566 分。

2025 年 6 月 27 日,Dan Gauthier 在 Hacker News 发了一条 Show HN。

billyhoffman,HN,05-01

Darryl(sleepingNomad),HN,05-01

jareds,HN,05-01

Pro

Darryl Morley

5 月 19 日的 WhatPort(USB-C 口实时状态,也有 £9.99 的 Pro)、5 月 20 日的 whatcable-windows(标「实验性」)、6 月 17 日的 WhatBattery(Mac / iPhone / iPad 电池健康),都没过百星,HN 上也找不到这三个的 Show HN。

| **Strata / SpaceWise** 9
| **LighterMac / Clearspace** PH 09-22 / 09-23 | — | — | PH 2

星数来自 GitHub(11-03),票数来自 Product Hunt,收入来自 TrustMRR(支付平台校验,11-03)。

相邻的还有两个开源库:status-trio(把 Wi-Fi、电池、音量合成一个菜单栏图标,1,327 星,作者 lingyired 在 GitHub 简介里写「积极学习 AI 编程,找工作中」)和 MiniWatts(iPhone 实际充电功率、30 个温度传感器、USB-PD 握手,456 星,用的是 iOS 私有 API,上不了 App Store)。

iPhone Mac

nerdsniper,HN,08-14

lxgr,HN,08-14

amelius,HN,08-14
