# Open-source developer tools as lead generation, selling hosting and license keys to developers and companies

B

**Doable, with conditions. Use open source for lead generation, and collect money through hosting and licensing sold to developers and companies. Don't treat taking over a free desktop tool as a business** The open-source projects on TrustMRR that actually take in money sell "we run it for you": managed cloud, license keys that self-hosters also need, and finished code that saves time. Star count and when they started charging don't matter much. Capgo started charging in month 8, EmailEngine in month 20, and textbee in month 35, and all of them are charging now Maybe · Grade and title based on the full article · Next review 12-01

| Background | Ice stopped updating. Toni Förster in Germany forked it as Thaw, reaching 12,502 stars in nine months. Monthly sponsorships estimated under $250. |
|---|---|
| Upside | Open source trades for trust and traffic; the money is in hosting, commercial licenses, and team features. Buyers are developers and companies who will build it into their own products. |
| Demand | Thaw's users want "it still works when the new system ships." The ones who pay are companies that don't want to run it themselves, can't run it, or must self-host for compliance. |
| Competition | Desktop tool slots don't make money (the paid ClearBar earned $177 in 30 days). Industry-specific AI phone receptionists number over a dozen, the top one charging $2,847 and the open-source one $82. |
| Revenue | Capgo: $39,923 in 30 days (883 stars). EmailEngine: $28,878. Rybbit: $9,184. textbee: $5,167. Thaw and Caveman have no public revenue. |
| Growth | No ads show up in the Meta, Google, or TikTok ad libraries. Look instead at the issue sections of the original projects, 'open-source alternatives to X', Reddit, HN, and the docs of your own open-source libraries. |
| Window | The approach isn't a trend and has no window. Paid tiers bring in money morning and night. What matters is that it's required, not optional. |
| Who it's for | Developers with 1–2 years maintaining server-side projects who use the product themselves. Not for people relying on desktop tools plus donations. |

### Latest

- **11-06** HextaUI (a component library on top of shadcn/ui) has only 147 stars on GitHub and 3 votes on Product Hunt, yet it earned its first revenue 10-06, brought in $1,058 total over 26 days, with a best single day of $160. But the last 7 days brought only $417, and it started slowing down after the first month. Paid blocks can get off the ground without GitHub buzz, but the ceiling isn't clear yet.

- **11-05** HextaUI sells premium blocks on top of shadcn/ui. In 26 days it has taken in $1,058 cumulative, with a best day of $160, while GitHub shows only 147 stars and Product Hunt 3 votes on launch day. But in the last 7 days it has brought in only $417, with MRR at 0, and it has clearly slowed since the first payment. Small component libraries like this can open a shop, but they can't yet support a steady monthly fee.

- **11-04** HextaUI is a shadcn/ui-based component library: free components plus paid premium blocks. It has 147 GitHub stars and only 3 Product Hunt votes, received its first payment on 10-06, and has taken in $1,058 cumulative in 26 days, with a best day of $160. But it has made only $417 in the last 7 days and has clearly slowed since the first month. This route can take payments without GitHub hype, but whether it lasts is unproven.

- **11-03** New sample HextaUI (a shadcn/ui component library: free components plus paid premium blocks): first revenue 10-06, $1,058 cumulative in 26 days, best day $160, MRR 0. Only 147 GitHub stars and 3 Product Hunt votes. An open-source component library with paid blocks can start charging money even with a small star count.

2026 年 2 月 10 日,一个叫 phazei 的用户在 Ice 的 GitHub 上开了一个 issue,标题是「PROJECT DEAD, no updates in 1.5 years, crashes all the time.」Ice 是 Mac 上最流行的免费菜单栏管理器——把被刘海挡住、平时用不上的图标收起来——作者 Jordan Baird,当时两万六千颗星。

一个多小时后,另一位用户回了一句:「Grok found github.com/stonerl/Thaw.」 再过一周:「Thaw works so well! Dude responds to issues super fast and has all the fixes.」

README 第一段写得很直白:「Free, and free to keep: there is no subscription, no account and no tracking, and a new macOS never costs an upgrade.」

Ice(上游,停更) Thaw(分叉)

App

LLM Gateway(30 天 $26 万,大部分是转手的模型费,而且已停更)没放进来。

「A subscription is required to use」这一句,就是这门生意的全部。(postalsys.com/plans,11-03 截图)

App

Thaw、Capptivo(免费开源录屏,10-13 以后没有提交)、Emdash(YC W26 的多 coding agent 桌面端,团队版还在 waitlist)半年后都没收上钱,不是因为晚,是因为它们是给个人用的桌面 App,免费版就是全部价值,没有一个「不付就用不了」的东西可卖。

TrustMRR 上做 AI 电话接待的有十几家:收入最高的是英国的 ScaleMove($99 / 月起,30 天 $2,847),然后是 QuickVOC($816)、Dial Bridge($201)、专做水管工的 Vozexo($138)、专做教会的 ChurchCalls($110)。

- **Reddit** :Rybbit 在 r/selfhosted、r/SideProject 发的 4 个帖。

(rybbit.com,11-03)

- 装机:Homebrew 官方 analytics(formulae.brew.sh,cask thaw / jordanbaird-ice,11-03);Docker Hub 公开拉取数(dograhai,11-03)。

- 开发者背景与收费时间:Ice issue #877、#939、#993;Thaw README 与 FAQ;Capgo 博客「Birth of Capgo」(2022-06-11 宣布收费);EmailEngine 博客「How I turned my open-source project into a business」(2024-02-27)与 postalsys 2022-08 的文章;Rybbit 作者在 Indie Hackers(2025-06)与 HN 的帖子;textbee 仓库 2025-02-15 的 billing 提交;OpenShorts 仓库 2026-07-14 的提交;Caveman 官网与 YC 页;Dograh 官网与 Show HN;TidBITS(2024-06-05,Bartender 出售)。
