# Native desktop mini-tools that replace a paid, bloated or login-required tool (offline, no sign-up): sell direct from your site as a one-time purchase at $9–59, or open source for stars. Windows / Linux is emptier

Status

Open (revenue comes in spikes, so smooth it with a product line; the GitHub star curve is slow and steady)

Why now, and how long the window lasts

AI coding turned native Swift and Rust apps into weekend projects (Compositor, 46 days, 18k stars; Filee, 33 days, 19k stars, both solo builds); people are tired of subscriptions, so "no subscription / offline / no account" is itself a selling point; Polar and Dodo solved payments. Not event-driven, so the window stays open for a long time.

Confidence

Medium. What would overturn it: [bytemail](https://stringers.io/worth/p/bytemail.html) and GotEmail's 30-day revenue in November falling below October's 1/3 with no new entrant in the category; or a library like Filee dropping below 100 daily gain in mid-November.

## Evidence

Grouped by store. Each group starts with the charts that can be graphed (real curves, data dates below the chart), then the scanner's original notes and source links.

- GitHub (anomaly, 11-02 core): the storytold org has 13 "pure Rust rewrite" craft libraries; photocraft has 75,832 stars and 13,441 forks (18%); the pdfcraft fork-to-star ratio is 38%. The report puts this batch at 38%–69% (normal is about 9%), cause unknown, so don't treat it as demand evidence.

### Mac App Store 1 pieces of evidence

- Mac App Store (us Top Paid overall chart, 11-02, library only has 2 days of data): only a few native solo tools launched in the last 90 days and reached the top 200 of the overall paid chart: Weatherling (6813641198, $1.99) #19, CosmoViewer Direct (6805619750, $34.99) #124, Mochi.md (6825712064, $9.99,10-29 at launch) #148, and Sindre Sorhus's Super Menu (6806784705) #153. The indie products making money, [bytemail](https://stringers.io/worth/p/bytemail.html), GotEmail, and Homy, are not on the Mac App Store; this business runs on direct sales from the website.

## Already doing it

Email clients: [bytemail](https://stringers.io/worth/p/bytemail.html), GotEmail; Finder-style tools: Homy, helumi; open source: Filee, Compositor, openGym, hex, DigUp, sill, tendedero, hatchzip, macos-sysdata, t4t5/owly, harry0703/MangoDisk, flyingmouse-format; "solo rewrites of big software": the storytold org, jub0t/Concat, tangency-labs/solidcraft. The four red oceans are in [051].

In our product dossiers: [bytemail](https://stringers.io/worth/p/bytemail.html), [OmniNotch](https://stringers.io/worth/p/omninotch.html)

## The hardest step

Distribution is ongoing. One-time-purchase products have to find buyers from scratch every month: Wow Keywords fell 93% over 5 days, [OmniNotch](https://stringers.io/worth/p/omninotch.html) went to zero within two weeks; [bytemail](https://stringers.io/worth/p/bytemail.html) got a second life from a second PH wave, and Cooldock is held up by a product line of three Dock tools plus paid acquisition (see [005]).

## Who it's for

Solo builders who know Swift, Rust, or C#. Selling direct for a one-time $9–59 and skipping the store saves 30%; you can also open-source the core and sell a closed-source Pro tier (see [052]). Polished native tools are far rarer on Windows (the report lists 17 GitHub winners, 8 Mac-only, 2 Windows-only); Linux is nearly empty, and the only Chinese-language one is FlyingMouse Format.

## Should every product builder know this?

Yes. Anyone building desktop tools should know that one-time-purchase revenue comes in spikes.

## Change log

2026-11-02

Backfill check: [bytemail](https://stringers.io/worth/p/bytemail.html) $22,557 → $23,394; Wow Keywords $14,912 → $15,110 (10-31 single day $396, has not recovered); GotEmail $7,957 → $8,159; Homy $3,511 → $3,530; Filee 19,252 → 19,949; hex +1,178 on the day, accelerating. First pass on the Mac App Store: only a few new solo native paid tools reached the top 200 of the us paid overall chart; this money is going through direct sales.
