# Vertical AI study tools for students and exam prep (med school, nursing, licensing or standardized tests like the SAT; monthly subscription). General AI writing and citation tools are getting eaten by ChatGPT, but the vertical ones are still holding.

Status

Watching (the report says verticals are "rising"; by last month's revenue today they're flat; check whether next month's run-rate reaches 1.2)

Why now, and how long the window lasts

Students got used to paying per semester thanks to Chegg and Quizlet, and "PDF → quiz / flashcards / citations" is what LLMs do best. After ChatGPT added a study mode, the general writing / citation tools fell first (three run-rates 0.67–0.77). What's left is verticals for licensing and standardized exams, where you need question banks and exam syllabi.

Confidence

Medium-low. The vertical "growing" claim rests only on sellers' self-reported YoY growth; last month's revenue looks flat. The "general one falling" evidence is harder. Would flip if the verticals' next-month run-rate drops below 0.8 → change to "narrowing." Would upgrade if a new vertical study listing shows run-rate ≥ 1.2, or an indie vertical exam tool appears with monthly revenue above $5k and still growing.

### For-sale listings6 evidence items

- For sale listing (Acquire lfp2qqjl6z, P&L + GA, 11-02 listed): AI study agent for medical students, 110k signups, small team, 21 months, TTM $147,600 / $116,300, self-reported growth +654%. But last month was $12,300, run-rate 1.0, already flat. Asking $395,000 (2.7× revenue).

- For sale listing (Flippa 14338446, Stripe connected, brokered): AI study platform for nursing students, US, about 1 years, average annualized $211,200 / $71,520, MRR $17,423 (title says $18.8k), 915 subscriptions. Asking $225,000 (1.1× revenue).

- For sale listing (Acquire oae8nyzw6l, P&L + GA): SAT mock exams + AI study plans, Vietnamese team, 19 months, TTM $29,400 / $22,400, last month $2,200 (run-rate 0.90), asking $40,000.

- For sale listings (Acquire, general writing / citations, P&L, run-rates falling): hv9rzot30c academic search + citation generation (TTM $512,600, last month $32,900,0.77, asking $1,100,000); gkgk1vss54 AI document review with citations (solo, TTM $197,200, last month $11,000,0.67, self-reported −31%, asking $300,000); mfuapliyh9 academic writing + PDF analysis (TTM $197,300, last month $12,100,0.74, self-reported −19%, asking $400,000). There's also uomc4brsnw, "Europe's #1" AI paper writing, TTM $820,000, last month $70,000 (1.02), asking $1,800,000, but no P&L uploaded.

- For sale listings (margin trap, Acquire 2n3dqsi8x9 = Flippa 12215721): AI quiz / flashcards / voice tutor, TTM $639,500, but profit only $61,500 (10%), last month $63,600 (1.19). Acquire asks $800,000; Flippa cut from $2,500,000 to $891,000 (−64%), and even after the cut it's 14.5× profit. Buying student traffic is expensive.

- For sale listing (correction): StudyScout, which the report had placed in this category (Flippa 12722420, cut from $350,000 to $150,000), had its title and details re-checked today. It's a personal finance / side-hustle B2C subscription, not a study tool, so it doesn't count for this category.

## Already doing it

Chegg, Quizlet, ChatGPT study mode; the listings above.

## The hardest step

Acquisition cost. The one with 6.4k paying subscribers has only a 10% profit margin. There's also exam seasonality and academic-integrity policy risk.

## Who it's for

A team of 1–3 people who knows the content of a specific licensing exam (medicine, nursing, law, accounting) and can build question banks; subscription billed monthly or per exam-prep cycle.

## Should every product builder know this?

No.

## Change log

New sample (qualified list: "first entry into a major market's Top Grossing"): Algor: AI per studenti (Algor Lab, Italy; App Store launched 6761065407,7-27, GP com.algoreducation.mobile 125k installs) entered the it Education Top Grossing at #9. It turns notes, PDFs, and photos into mind maps, summaries, flashcards, and quizzes, in Italian, German, Spanish, and English, and claims 5M students. It isn't a new entrant (Algor Education is a web product that's been around for years; the app only launched in July). It shows that a local-language AI study tool can reach the top 10 of the category chart in a mid-sized market like Italy. Neither Google nor Meta ad libraries show any ads from it.

Backfill check: all listed, none cut. The medical-student listing self-reports +654%, but last month's revenue equals TTM/12. StudyScout was misfiled (it's personal finance) and has been removed. The nursing listing's MRR field is $17,423, not the $18.8k in the title.
