How a chanting app's landing page went from 3.7KB to 30k pages and nearly 3x its site rankings in 16 years

What it is The website of a long-running Arabic recitation and prayer-times app, now a tool site that shows same-day prayer times by city and Quran commentary by verse.

Why it took off The author expanded the app's prayer-time calculation into 25k pages, one per "city × English/Arabic", plus over 6 thousand verse-by-verse commentary pages. They caught Muslims in India, the UK, Canada and elsewhere searching "prayer times + city"; the old domain and brand got the new pages indexed quickly.

CHow you could copy it Don't build a prayer-times site; that space has been crowded for over a decade. If you have an old app or domain, turn the app's core calculation into pages by "place × language", monetize the web pages with ads while keeping the app ad-free, and start with under-served languages and long-tail public texts.

C grade: a clear playbook worth studying, but IslamicFinder and Muslim Pro have worked this niche for over a decade, and a Google card sits above the results. It climbed because of a 16-year-old domain, 90k followers and an app ranked #1 in Saudi Arabia. Followers don't get that. Still under the radar

Global rank 129k · 90 days ago 354k

athkarapp.com is the website for "Athkar - أذكار", an Islamic recitation app listed for 2010 years. For two years its homepage was only a few KB. In summer 2026 it suddenly became a tool site of about 30k pages: a prayer-times page for each city in English and Arabic, plus a page for every Quran verse with commentary. Its global website ranking climbed from 350k to 129k in 90 days. No new product launched; an old site owner moved a brand built over 16 years onto search engines. Below: what he did, where the traffic comes from, where the money comes from, who else has done this, and whether you can copy it.

The first page the Internet Archive captured

In 2026 Jul 10, the Internet Archive first captured a page under athkarapp.com shaped like /prayer-times/<country>/<city>/. It captured 899 such pages that month. Before that, from May 2024 to April 2026, the archived homepage stayed at about 3,700 bytes, just a business card saying "download the app". The homepage grew to 50–670k bytes in May, city pages went live in July, a sitemap was published in Aug 7, and Quran pages went live in Sep 9.

Today I opened the London page (11-07 at 5:30 AM). At the top: the Hijri date "1448 28 Dhu al-Hijjah", a countdown to the next Friday prayer, and a switch to auto-play the adhan at prayer time. Below that is a 10-day timetable. Under the table: "Full monthly calendar available in the Athkar App", with App Store and Google Play buttons. Further down are FAQs: "What time is Fajr in London today?", "How long is the fast today in London?", "Is this app free?". Every page uses the same template, only the city name changes. In between sit a couple of "Find Prayer Mats" and "Book Site Tours" blocks, which are Google ads.

What it actually is

App: Athkar - أذكار, by Emirati developer Fares Al Ali (فارس آل علي). His company site fares.net calls itself "one of the earliest Arabic websites since 1995". The iOS app launched in May 2010 and includes morning and evening adhkar, duas, prayer times and adhan alarms, qibla direction, the Quran, a tasbih counter, and widgets, across iPhone, iPad, Mac and Apple Watch. It is free with no ads in the app. The paid version sells "recite on behalf of a loved one", booklets, cards and PDF sharing. The Android version came out in Sep 2026 1.

Website: according to 11-07's actual sitemap—

OtherA handfulQibla direction, city comparison, country list

Almost everything is calculated or public: prayer times come from city coordinates and time zones, and the commentary is public text. One person plus AI tools could build this in two months (inferred).

Where the traffic comes from: people searching "prayer times + city name"

The ranking climb lines up with the page launches, step by step:

TimelineWhat happenedGlobal ranking (Tranco)
Jul 30–Aug 6City pages live, not yet picked up by search enginesAround 353k, flat
Aug 13–Sep 3After sitemap 8-07 was publishedWeekly steps: 338k → 316k → 289k → 263k
SeptemberQuran 6,351 pages live (9-09); Android launch (9-01)Among real Chrome users worldwide, it went from never in the top 500k to the top 100k
Nov 5—129k, 30 days ×1.5, still moving up a thousand or two places a day

To see which countries the visitors come from, look at Chrome real-user buckets: India was still outside the 100k in July, 8, then entered the top 50k in September; the UK, Canada and Turkey entered the top 100k; Australia, Germany, Spain and France newly entered the top 500k. These are countries where Muslims are a minority but a sizable number: India has about 200M Muslims, and the UK, Canada, Germany, France and Australia have large diaspora communities. These people are not in Arab countries and may not have a prayer app, so to know the time for today's prayer they search Google for "prayer times London". The English city pages catch this group (inferred, high confidence).

Traffic from Arab countries is invisible: the Chrome buckets I have only cover 21 countries, and Saudi Arabia, Egypt and the UAE are not among them, so how many people the Arabic half of the pages brings in is unknown. It is also impossible to tell how much of the ranking comes from the app itself visiting the domain.

Two smaller boosts:

  • Old brand: the X account @Athkarapp has 91.5k followers, and a pinned post about the big iOS 10.0 update got 36k views in late October. An old domain already has backlinks and trust, so new pages get indexed faster. A new team doing the same thing doesn't have this advantage.
  • Android launch: released in Sep 1, 11-06 installs to 57,598,7 days +12,410. On Sep 28 an Arabic tech account "دربيل التكنولوجيا" posted on Threads: "Don't get confused… the official Athkar by fares.net, the best recitation and prayer-times app, is now on Android", with a Play link. Whether it is paid is unverified. But the site's climb started a month before Android, so Android is not the main driver.

No ads from this app turned up in the Meta, Google or TikTok ad libraries.

Where the money comes from: the app has no ads, the website does

It earns on both sides:

  • Website runs Google AdSense, with search-style ad blocks on city and commentary pages. A visitor who checks a time and leaves still sees an ad, and that's money.
  • App stays ad-free. The website pushes people toward it with "full monthly table, adhan alarm in the app", and then sells the paid version.

The app runs no ads. It's the word-of-mouth it built in Saudi Arabia over 16 years that's its real asset. In Oct 30, a five-star review from Saudi:

"It's beautiful and useful. I've never seen an app like this, and there are no annoying ads. Please make an Android version so my parents can use it too."

11-07, in the Saudi App Store it ranks #1 in the Reference category's free chart and #97 overall in free apps, with 404k iOS ratings in the Saudi store, 791 more in 7 days; in the Egypt Reference category it is #1. Neither the website nor the app income is public.

Others walked this path over a decade ago

City prayer-time pages were not his invention. Global rankings for similar sites 11-05:

WebsiteRankHow it differs
quran.com6,649Quran-only
mawaqit.net19,429Strong in Europe, by mosque publication date
muslimpro.com26,805Largest all-in-one Muslim app; its site claims 190M downloads
islamicfinder.org28,595The ancestor of city prayer-time pages; dropped from 24k in 90 days
aladhan.com104,672Tools plus a free API, no strong app; dropped from 72k in 90 days
athkarapp.com128,972Climbed from 354k in 90 days

It has just caught up to AlAdhan's traffic level and is still four to five times behind Muslim Pro and IslamicFinder. For "prayer times + big city" queries, Google's first screen is its own prayer-times card, with these older sites below it. What athkarapp can win is the long tail: small cities, Arabic-language queries, and verse-by-verse commentary.

The pages are not very refined: the London page's FAQ says "Fajr today 5:22", while the table on the same page says today is 5:23; the Mumbai page is off by even more (5:11 vs 5:27). The FAQ answers are hardcoded at generation time and don't refresh with the date. Template problems like this can drop rankings if Google judges the pages low quality.

If it were you

C. Study the approach, but don't enter this niche. Prayer-time sites have been crowded for over a decade, and athkarapp climbed thanks to a 16-year-old domain, 90k followers and an app ranked #1 in Saudi Arabia to funnel people in. You can't get those. What's worth taking is the move itself: turn the app's core calculation into pages by "place × language".

Who it fits: teams that already have an app or old domain with some users, and an app feature that computes something by place, date or subject: time zones, sunrise and sunset, tides, exchange rates, holidays, star charts, bearings.

Who it doesn't fit: anyone starting from zero who wants a prayer-times site. The English city keywords have been held by IslamicFinder and Muslim Pro for over a decade, with the Google card in front. Without an old domain, thirty thousand template pages will likely be seen as low-quality and not indexed.

How to do it: one page per city (or per subject), with today's answer and a table for the next 7–10 days; the full version stays in the app. Add FAQ structured data to each page, link sibling cities, and cross-link language versions. Put ads on the web pages, keep the app ad-free. Where public texts exist (commentary, verses, poems, legal rulings), make each entry its own page to capture the long tail. Recalculate the daily numbers every day rather than hardcoding them as he did.

How to get users: search. Start by using the brand and old users of your existing app's domain to give the new pages a push. Start with under-served languages: his Arabic pages and verse-by-verse commentary face far less competition than English. Before holidays, write seasonal questions into the pages: he already has "how long is the fast today" on every city page, and searches for "iftar time + city" will surge before Ramadan 2027 (around February), likely with another jump.

When to start: no rush. This is slow work; it took him over a month from launch to ranking. To chase seasonal keywords, launch at least two to three months early.

What would show you misread it: ① around Ramadan 2027 its ranking doesn't jump again, or it falls back below 200k by the end of 2026 — that would mean Google has downranked these template pages, and programmatic page generation doesn't work in this category; ② conversely, if it catches up to IslamicFinder (around 29k) within six months, the old sites are declining and the long tail has room, so prayer times are less saturated than I thought and it's worth re-evaluating.

Why athkarapp.com (Athkar - أذكار) showed up

Channel: web (C1, matches Google Play net.fares.athkar) | Research date 2026-11-07

Bottom line

This isn't a new product catching fire. It's an 16-year-old app (iOS listed 2010 years, 400k+ ratings in Saudi Arabia) whose owner rebuilt a landing page that was only a few KB into a programmatic SEO tool site during 2026 5–September: about 25k city-level prayer-time pages (English and Arabic) plus 6,351 Quran chapter and commentary pages, with AdSense and links pushing to the app. Tranco's climb (from August) lines up with when these pages went live, and the countries CrUX newly picked up (India, Canada, UK, Turkey, Australia, Germany, Spain, France) are the 'Muslim diaspora' countries the English city pages cover. The Android launch (2026-09-01) was a second boost during the same period.

1. What it is

  • App: Athkar - أذكار, developed by fares.net (Fares Al Ali, UAE; fares.net claims to be 'one of the earliest Arabic websites since 1995'). iOS listed 2010-05-27, covers iPhone/iPad/Mac/Apple Watch; content includes dhikr (adhkar), duas, prayer times with full-adhan alarms, qibla, Quran, a voice counter, and custom widgets. Free, no ads in the app; Pro subscription sells 'dhikr for loved ones, booklets, cards, PDF sharing'. Sources: athkarapp.com homepage, fares.net, App Store page.
  • Site: athkarapp.com. Before May 2026 the homepage was only about 3.7KB (Wayback recorded length 3,7xx bytes, from 2024-05 to 2026-04). From 2026-05 the homepage became a new site of about 49–670k bytes. Current structure (from real sitemap counts):
    • /prayer-times/: 24,936 URLs = about 12,470 country/city pages × English and Arabic (/prayer-times/<country>/<city>/ and /prayer-times/ar/...), plus /compare/, /qibla/, /countries/. Countries with the most cities: China 1,280, India 1,128, US 981, Brazil 761, Japan 578 (English version count, including country pages).
    • /quran/: 6,351 URLs (114 chapters + 6,236 verses), one page per verse, with 4 Arabic commentaries (التفسير الميسر, السعدي, ابن كثير, القرطبي) and short English notes, all lastmod 2026-09-09.
    • City page content: today's Hijri/Gregorian date, countdown to the next prayer, 7–10 day timetable, auto-playing adhan in the browser, FAQPage + BreadcrumbList structured data, hreflang bilingual cross-links, about 20 internal links to other cities in the same country; two 'full monthly table in the app' App Store/Google Play buttons.
    • Monetization: pages include Google AdSense (adsbygoogle, ca-pub-6734853282915469) and search-style ad units like 'Discover more / Find Prayer Mats / Book Local Tours'. The app says no ads, but the site earns from both ads and funneling to the app.
    • Minor quality issue: the Mumbai page FAQ says 'Fajr today 5:11' while the table on the same page shows 5:27, meaning the FAQ text is statically generated and doesn't refresh with the date (2026-11-07 confirmed by testing).

Verdict: many people are doing the same thing, and programmatic city prayer-time pages are a playbook IslamicFinder, Muslim Pro and AlAdhan have run for over a decade. athkarapp invented nothing new.

4. Growth tactics (evidence)

  1. Programmatic SEO (main cause, confirmed): about 25k prayer-time pages + 6,351 Quran/commentary pages; each page has FAQ structured data, hreflang, and same-country city internal links. The launch timing (city pages in July, commentary pages in September) lines up step by step with Tranco climbing from August and CrUX moving up in September. The countries CrUX newly picked up are all Muslim-minority countries already covered by the English city pages (Indian Muslims, about 200M, and expat communities in the UK, Canada, Germany, France and Australia). These users are exactly the people who search "prayer times + city name".
  2. Old app brand and owned channels: X @Athkarapp with 91.5k followers, 1,947 posts, and a pinned post with 36K views; Instagram @athkarapp; the homepage and fares.net both link to the new site. Existing users and brand searches give the new site initial authority (an old domain with backlinks). This is something a new site can't easily copy.
  3. Android launch + Arabic tech blogger promotion (confirmed to exist, impact not verified): 2026-09-01 Android launch; the Arabic tech account "دربيل التكنولوجيا" (@drbeel_techno) posted on Instagram/Threads "لا يطوفكم... برنامج أذكار الأصلي من fares.net" with a Play link. Whether it was paid is unverified. New Android users only reach the site indirectly through the app, and the site's traffic growth started before the Android launch.
  4. In-app share outbound links (weak evidence): Wayback shows 2026-05 instances of athkarapp.com/ar/bookor.pdf carrying an Instagram fbclid, suggesting the PDF booklets shared from the app/social are hosted on this domain. The volume is very small and not the main cause.
  5. Ad spend: our Meta / Google / TikTok ad libraries have no matches (the data card's ads field is empty). Apple Search Ads in the Middle East can't be ruled out (unverified).
  6. Not found: media coverage (only one tweet from MSDAR_NEWS in 2020 about the "10th anniversary"), Reddit/HN, and zero mentions in the x-radar corpus over the last 90 days.

5. Why it took off

  • Timing: no special platform event; the second half of 2026 is not Ramadan (Ramadan in 2026 runs roughly 2–March, and in 2027 roughly early February), so this growth is structural SEO accumulation, not seasonal. Before next year's Ramadan (1–February), searches for "fasting hours / suhoor / iftar + city" will surge, and the pages already embed a "how long is today's fast" FAQ, so another jump is likely.
  • Why users stay or pay: app-side evidence is 16 years of accumulated ratings and reviews saying "used it for years, then bought the subscription" and praising the attention to detail (ihsan); it ranked #1 in the free chart in the Saudi Reference store. On the web side, users come to check the time once; retention depends on converting them to "download the app for the full monthly timetable / Adhan alarm", plus direct AdSense monetization.

6. Differentiation

  • No differentiation on the website: city prayer-time pages are the industry standard, and athkarapp's page structure (countdown, 7-day table, FAQ, qibla direction, comparison pages) is nearly identical to IslamicFinder's and Muslim Pro's web pages. The real differences are: ① it runs Arabic and English together, and Arabic long-tail queries (including per-verse commentary pages for 4 commentaries) face weaker competition than English; ② a highly rated, ad-free old app sits behind it to handle conversion, and the website also runs AdSense, so it earns on both fronts; ③ an old domain, old brand, and 90k owned followers mean new content gets indexed and trusted quickly.
  • App-level differentiation (ad-free, Arabic-first, polished design, full Apple lineup including Watch, custom widgets, PDFs for reciting with family) explains why it still ranked #1 in the Saudi Reference store in 16, but it is not why the website traffic grew this time. The growth came from the move itself: taking the old app's brand assets onto the web and doing programmatic SEO.

7. Visibility and copycats

  • Revenue is not public (appgazers has a model-estimate page but no specific figures; no founder has shared revenue). The website's growth has no media, major X accounts, or Reddit discussion behind it. It is "not many people know about it yet", though the approach itself is common knowledge in the Muslim tools niche.
  • Copycats: none found that specifically copy its website. Conversely, it is itself a follower of the IslamicFinder/Muslim Pro web model.

8. What to borrow

  • "Old app assets → programmatic SEO website": an app that already has a brand, ratings, and an old domain takes its core calculations (prayer times, calendar, astronomy, exchange rates, time zones…) and generates static pages across "location × language", adds FAQ structured data, hreflang, and same-tier internal links to each page, then layers on AdSense and a "get the full content in the app" CTA. A small team can do this (here it looks like one person plus AI tools, generating 30k pages in 2 months).
  • Use minority-language and religious texts to build long-tail traffic: per-verse commentary pages are zero-cost content (public commentaries), and Arabic search competition is weak. The same approach works for Bible verses, Buddhist scriptures, poetry, and so on.
  • Dual monetization: an ad-free app protects reputation, while the site carries ads to capture one-off search traffic. The two don't conflict.
  • Before Ramadan and other holidays, pre-build seasonal FAQs (fasting duration, iftar times) into the pages to catch the holiday peak.

9. Uncertain

  • How much of Tranco comes from the app itself hitting athkarapp.com (DNS-based data sources count app backend requests). The CrUX tier increase shows there is at least real Chrome web traffic, but the ratio of web visits to app callbacks is unknown.
  • Web traffic from Arab countries (Saudi Arabia, Egypt) is not visible, since our CrUX data doesn't cover these countries.
  • Whether Google has indexed the site at scale and which keywords bring traffic (no Search Console or keyword data); seomonitor shows 275 keywords in the UK and a 4% citation rate in AI Overviews, for reference only.
  • AdSense revenue and app subscription revenue are both unverified; whether the bloggers promoting it on Android were paid is also unverified.
