A web clock that hasn't been updated in three years has held the #1 spot for the US "clock" search
What it is A web page that opens to a full-screen oversized clock, with the time also live in the browser tab. It makes money from display ads and donations to remove them.
Why it took off A 2011-year-old exact-match domain plus over a decade of accumulated site authority kept it at #1 for the US "clock" search. The recent jump in rank is because US schools reopened and teachers put it back on classroom screens.
CHow you could follow it Don't build a generic clock. Pick specific settings like classrooms or exams, build a single-purpose page people leave open all day, and also ship a Chrome new-tab extension, getting traffic through scene-keyword SEO and teacher resource pages.
Global rank 78k · 90 days ago 291k
Searching "clock" on Google in the US gets 1M searches a month, and the #1 result is clocktab.com, a large-display clock page a French developer built 2011 years ago. Over the last three months its global traffic rank climbed from 360k to 76k, which looks like growth, but most of it is US schools reopening: teachers put it back on classroom screens. What's worth examining is how one domain and one clock took over a decade of search traffic, and whether that can be repeated today.
A letter from March 2023 years ago
On March 2023 10, Romuald Brillout wrote on clocktab.com's donation page: "For a long time I refused to put ads on Clock Tab, I don't like ads. But I want to improve it, and I have a lot of ideas for new features." Any amount is fine: "If money is tight, $0.01 via PayPal is totally fine," and after paying you automatically receive a hidden code that removes ads.
The next day, March 11, he made the last commit to Clock Tab's open-source repo, changing the background image to download from imgur. For the three and a half years since, that repo hasn't changed a single line.
Romuald is better known in developer circles as the author of Vike (formerly vite-plugin-ssr). Clock Tab and its sister site Timer Tab were a side project of his from about fifteen years ago. The domain was registered in Dec 2011 26, and PCWorld covered Timer Tab that same year. By November 2026, this unmaintained side project was getting roughly 1.5M visits a month (SEMrush, 7–September 1.35M / 1.54M / 1.48M).
It's just a clock
Open clocktab.com and the whole screen is one large digital clock. You can choose 12 or 24-hour format, show or hide seconds, the date, and the week number. The background image, colors, and fonts are all customizable, and a styled setup can be shared as a link. The key detail is that the browser tab title also ticks the time live. The author calls this "Time Icon," which makes it well suited to staying open as a tab all day. The same site also has a countdown and a full-screen message board, and the sister site timer-tab.com handles timers, alarms, and stopwatches.
No app, no account, no subscription. The money comes from the display ads on the page, plus the PayPal donation to remove them mentioned above. Revenue has never been disclosed.
Why it looks like it's rising now: school reopening, not new traffic
On the global traffic ranking (Tranco), clocktab.com was at 13k in Aug 359, its low point. By Nov 6 it had reached 76k. But over the same period its monthly visits only grew about 10% (SEMrush, July to September).
Put it next to the tools teachers use in the classroom and it makes sense. In Chrome's real-user data, clocktab.com ranks in the top 10k in the US in May, falls to the top 50k from 6 through August, then climbs back to the top 10k in September: a textbook summer drop and back-to-school bounce. classroomscreen.com, a whole-screen tool for teachers, climbs from 110k to 36k over the same stretch, roughly the same 3.1x gain. vclock.com and online-stopwatch.com follow the same shape. time.is and timeanddate.com, which have nothing to do with schools, stay basically flat over the same period.
Rankings amplified the change more than visits did. The likely reason is that its users leave one computer on all day: average session of 41 min 25 sec, 75% desktop, 65% US (SEMrush). When more devices switch on in school and office networks, the ranking jumps noticeably.
Whether it has really grown compared with the same period last year can't be determined, since ranking data only goes back to late July. The global line is one tier better in September than in May, so there may be some real growth, but the size can't be confirmed.
Where users come from: one keyword, plus fifteen years
| Source | Share or scale | Sources |
|---|---|---|
| Direct visits (bookmarks, remembered name) | 49.6% | SEMrush,2026-10 |
| Google search | 42.9% | Same as above |
| US "clock" | 1M searches/month, ranked 1, 32.7% of its traffic | Same as above; also #1 on Brave US search (11-07) |
| US "clock tab" | 135k searches/month, ranked 1, 26.7% | SEMrush |
| US "clock with seconds" | 165k searches/month, ranked 1 | Same as above |
| Referred by ChatGPT | About 2,000 visits/month | Same as above |
Holding #1 for "clock" comes from a few things followers can't buy: an exact-match old domain (registered 2011 years ago); 12.8k backlinks built over a decade, mostly from teacher resource pages, productivity blogs, and forum mentions; and user behavior. People who land on it get a clock, exactly what someone searching "clock" wants. They stay 41 minutes and half come back directly, and those signals keep the ranking stable.
The term "clock tab" itself gets 135k searches a month, a sign that many people now treat it as a brand and search for the name directly.
No evidence was found of paid ads, TikTok, Product Hunt, or Hacker News promotion, and no one on X has mentioned it in the last three months. The author himself doesn't promote it.
Who's competing
| Name | Scale (global ranking, 11-05) | How it differs from Clock Tab |
|---|---|---|
| Time card in Google search results | — | Fine for a glance, not for leaving full-screen all day |
| timeanddate.com | 2,167 | A 1998-year-old general time portal with world clocks and calendars |
| time.is | 8,675 | Focused on precise time sync and time zones |
| classroomscreen.com | 36,246 | A full-screen toolkit for teachers (clock, timer, roll call, noise meter), with a paid subscription |
| online-stopwatch.com | 43,226 | A classroom-oriented fun timer |
| vclock.com | 61,004 | Clock, alarm, timer, and stopwatch in one site, multilingual |
| New sites like time.now and digitalclock.live | 60k / 540k | Going after long-tail terms like "online clock full screen"; digitalclock.live has risen from 900k to 540k since late July |
The more direct threat is same-name copycats. clocktab.app is tied to a Chrome extension also called Clock Tab, with 4,000 users and a 4.79 rating, marketed as "no ads, works offline." Its store listing says "press F for full screen, use it as a desktop clock on a second monitor for meetings and presentations," and it even has a dedicated classroom-clock page. myclocktab.com was registered in October 2025, targets students and teachers, and is doing SEO through blog posts. They capture the brand term "clock tab." The original site hasn't been updated in three years, and these newer sites have matched or surpassed it on features.
What to learn from it
First, the format itself. A single function, usable the moment it opens, and designed to stay open (moving information in the tab title). Time on site and return visits will be high, which suits display ads especially well. Timers, pomodoro clocks, countdowns, exchange rates, air quality, and sports scores can all use this same shell.
Second, rule out seasonality before calling growth on a site. Classroom and office tools drop every year from 6 to August and recover in September. Compare against a site like classroomscreen and you won't mistake school reopening for a breakout.
Third, when an old site goes unmaintained, its brand term gets captured by same-name extensions and new sites. That's the only opening followers have today.
If it were you
C: Worth learning from, but building a generic online clock isn't worth it. Its traffic comes from a 2011-year-old exact-match domain and a decade of #1 for "clock," and neither can be bought today. The long-tail terms are already crowded with a dozen new tool sites, and same-name extensions already exist.
Who it's for: Independent developers who already run tool sites and know SEO, who want an always-open single-purpose page for their network, or who want a small classroom-focused tool.
Who it's not for: Anyone hoping to take "clock" or "online clock" head terms with a new domain, or anyone expecting meaningful short-term income from it (ad revenue isn't disclosed, and from outside you can't tell what a clock earns).
How to build it: Don't build a generic clock. Pick a specific setting and make a page people leave open: for classrooms (large-face clock + timetable countdown + bell reminders), for exams (full-screen exam timer), or a "clock / timer" term in a non-English market not yet held by an old site. Also build a Chrome extension, since the new-tab page is a natural always-open spot, and it's how clocktab.app got 4,000 users.
How to get users: SEO with scene pages (terms like classroom clock and exam timer), plus resource pages and forums for teachers, and places teachers browse such as Pinterest. Backlinks should come the way Clock Tab's did, from people casually recommending it.
When to start: No rush. The next US school low point is from 6 to August next year. Get the page built and indexed before then, to catch the late-August 2027 school-reopening wave.
Signs you've got it wrong: If clocktab.com doesn't dip from 6 to August next year and instead keeps rising, that means it's more than seasonal and real structural growth is happening, which deserves a fresh look. Conversely, if a same-name site like clocktab.app takes the #1 spot for the "clock tab" brand term within a year or two, the old site's rankings are less stable than they appear, and the opening for followers is bigger than estimated now.

Why clocktab.com (Clock Tab) is running up
In one line: Clock Tab is a minimal full-screen online clock built 2011 years ago by French developer Romuald Brillout (brillout, author of Vike / vite-plugin-ssr). The code hasn't been touched since 2023-03. This recall, a Tranco 90-day ×3.7, is mainly a seasonal bump from the US school year, not new momentum. It's an old site that has spent over a decade riding the SEO value of the head term 'clock'. Traffic comes from Google search plus users opening it directly (classroom projectors and second monitors left on all day). It monetizes with display ads, and donations can remove them.
1. What it is
- Opening it shows a large digital clock, with optional 12/24-hour format, seconds, date, and week number. The browser tab title also shows the live time ('Time Icon'), so it works as a tab you keep open. Themes (background images, colors, fonts) are customizable, and you can generate share links. Sister sites include Countdown, Msg Tab, and timer-tab.com (timers/alarms/stopwatch). Source: www.clocktab.com/ (read via Jina, 2026-11-07)
- Domain 2011-12-26 registered (Verisign RDAP); the About page says the author started building Clock Tab and Timer Tab about ten years ago; PCWorld and 40tech covered Timer Tab in 2011.
- Open source: github.com/brillout/clocktab, with 2020-02,61 stars and 30 forks. The last commit is from 2023-03-11 (the change was switching background image downloads to imgur). Earlier commits from 2020-11/12 add the Quantcast consent popup, GPT ad slots, ads.txt, and OneTag (via gh api). In other words, the product itself hasn't been updated in three and a half years.
- Monetization: the Donate page says "I refused to add ads for a long time... a donation gets you a hidden code to remove ads," paid via PayPal, with 0.01 USD also accepted. Revenue has never been disclosed.
- Nearly all traffic lands on the web. No native app; webcatalog.io has someone wrapping it as a desktop shell (third party).
2. Data: a seasonal rebound, not new momentum

| SEMrush organic keywords | US 'clock' ranks #1 (1M monthly searches, 32.7% of its traffic), 'clock tab' #1 (135k, 26.7%), 'clock with seconds' #1 (165k), 'clocktab' #1 (22k); 'time' #14 | Same as above |
| Brave US search (2026-11-07) | clocktab.com ranks #1 for both 'clock' and 'clock with seconds' | Brave Search API |
Assessment: the US CrUX curve is the standard pattern: high in May, 6–August summer drop, back to the original level in September when school starts. Classroom tools in the same window follow the same shape: classroomscreen.com Tranco 111,391 → 128,716 (mid-August) → 36,246, CrUX US top-100k in July → 8 / top-10k in September. vclock.com and online-stopwatch.com's US CrUX also drop to top-50k from 6–July and return to top-10k by 8–September. Non-school peers (time.is, timeanddate.com, 24timezones, onlinealarmkur) are basically flat over the same period. Clocktab went from 7-30 to now ×3.1, almost the same as classroomscreen's ×3.1. Tranco amplifies the move more than SEMrush visit counts (7→September only up about 10%), probably because Tranco's sources (DNS data like Cisco Umbrella and Cloudflare) are especially sensitive to device counts on school and office networks, and its users are 'one device open all day' (41-minute sessions). Tranco only keeps history back to 7-30, so 'is it higher than last year at this time' can't be checked. Global CrUX for September (top-50k) is one tier better than May (top-100k), which could hint at some structural growth, but the size can't be confirmed.

4. Growth tactics (where users come from)
- Google head-term SEO (verified): US 'clock' 1M monthly searches, where it ranks #1, and it also holds 'clock with seconds' at #1; google.com brings 42.9% (SEMrush). This comes from an exact-match domain held for 2011 years, a decade-plus of accumulated domain authority, and 12.77K backlinks (SEMrush), mostly from teacher resource pages, productivity blogs, and casual forum recommendations (for example, an Asana forum user says "I use clocktab.com to show date and time in another window").
- Brand term + direct visits = returning users (verified): direct traffic 49.6%; 'clock tab' 135k and 'clocktab' 22k monthly searches are both brand terms. Users remember the name, bookmark it, and come back every day.
- School/office use, left open all day (strong inference): average session 41 minutes, 75% desktop, 65% US; the back-to-school curve matches classroomscreen. Clock Tab's same-name copycats all build dedicated classroom-clock pages, which indirectly shows this need exists in classrooms.
- AI citations (small): ChatGPT sends about 2K/month (SEMrush).
- Not found: ads (not in our Meta/Google ad libraries), TikTok, X (x-radar: 0 posts in the last 90 days), HN, Product Hunt, no recent exposure. The author doesn't promote it either.
5. Why it took off
- It isn't "newly breaking out". It's old SEO assets coming back into peak season with the school year: US CrUX May before 10k → before summer 50k → September before 10k. Similar classroom tools moved in step (traffic library).
- The root reason it ranked #1 for "clock" is that domain, timing and content all match intent: the exact-match domain was registered 2011 years ago; the page itself is a clock, exactly what someone searching "clock" wants; and users stay 41 minutes and often come back directly, both strong engagement signals.
- The always-on format (live seconds in the tab title, fullscreen, themes) suits projectors and second screens, which drives long dwell time and brand return visits, and those in turn hold the rankings.
- Monetization is light: display ads plus PayPal donations to remove ads. One person maintaining it, and it keeps earning even if it's not updated for three years.
6. Differentiation
Compared with time.is / timeanddate: it doesn't do precision or time zones, it just keeps a big, good-looking clock open. Compared with classroomscreen / vclock: it has one function and zero friction, and its tab title is the time. The real differentiation is it already holds the exact-match clocktab.com domain and over a decade of rankings. Anyone can build the features (clocktab.app is already more modern: no ads, offline, extension). So differentiation is why it's been able to break out, but the asset doing the work is the "old domain + head-term rankings", not the product features.
7. Visibility / copycats
- Revenue isn't public. No media or big X accounts have written about it (x-radar: 0 posts). Only tool pages like SEMrush publish its traffic. It's visible to a small circle (SEO and tool-site people).
- Copycats already exist: clocktab.app (same name + Chrome extension with 4,000 users, bidding on the "clock tab" brand term, with a classroom-clock page), myclocktab.com (2025-10 registration, aimed at students and teachers), clocktab.org (listed on launchtory). Terms like "online clock / clock with seconds" are also crowded with new tool sites (secondsclock.com, clockfaceonline.com, time.now, digitalclock.live, etc.).
8. What to borrow
- A single-function tool site + exact-match domain + an "always open" format (the tab title shows dynamic info) lets you push dwell time and direct return visits very high, which suits display ads especially well.
- Classroom and office always-on use has a clear school-year cycle. Before reading the site's growth as real, rule out seasonality (compare against benchmark sites like classroomscreen).
- An old one-person tool site that stops updating gets its brand term taken by same-name sites and extensions. The copycats' approach is a Chrome extension + no ads + scenario pages (classroom-clock).
9. Uncertain
- Whether it's actually up versus the same period last year (Tranco only stores up to 07-30, SEMrush has only 3 months).
- 8.7% from Bangladesh, and 100% desktop, source unclear (could be internet cafes or offices, outsourced teams left open, or bot traffic).
- Ad revenue and donation totals are unknown.
- clocktab.app's RDAP registration date is 2026-11-03, yet its Chrome extension already has 4,000 users. It may have changed domains or re-registered; not verified.
