Rankings up 4x in a month, revenue still $200/month: the programmatic SEO ledger of a Brazilian company lookup site

What it is A site for looking up Brazilian company registration info: free lookups across 70M companies' public tax-authority data, and a US$10/month Pro that adds ownership graphs, bulk export, API and MCP.

Why it took off It used public government data to build about 480k hand-picked company pages, let AI search crawlers in, and earned a badge from the government open-data portal. Then in October, a whole batch of similar Brazilian sites surged in traffic rankings together.

CHow you could follow it Don't build another one in Brazil. If you do, pick a country where company registry data is public but nobody has done it well yet. Copy its playbook: choose pages carefully, earn government backlinks, let AI crawlers in. Monetize through ads or annual plans sold to accounting firms and law firms.

Grade C: the SEO playbook is clear and worth learning, but Brazil already has twenty-plus sites, and the leader is several times its size. Its traffic rose 4x while revenue barely moved. Large markets like the UK and France, where it could be replicated, already have players. Few people know about it yet

Global rank 122k · 90 days ago, top 1M+

CNPJ Aberto is a site for looking up Brazilian company information, first registered 2026 years ago in April. In October its global traffic rank climbed from over 50 million to around 120k. Its subscription revenue, though, has stayed around $200/month, with 38 paying users in total. Its SEO is tidy and a few tactics are worth copying. But the month it climbed, a whole batch of similar Brazilian sites rose together. The traffic came, and paying customers didn't follow. Copying it isn't worth the effort.

A two-week-old site, first post: "Look up companies in Claude"

In 2026 April 15, a person named Felipe de Villa Caon registered cnpjaberto.com.br (per the Brazilian domain registry registro.br; his full name comes from his credit on the Brazilian government open-data portal). 13 days later, on April 28, the site's blog published its first real post: "Look up CNPJ directly in Claude (and any AI)". The post opens with a very specific pain point:

If someone asks Claude "look up CNPJ 18.236.120/0001-58", the model has three bad options: guess, apologize that it can't, or search the web and land on slow sites full of CAPTCHAs.

CNPJ is Brazil's company tax ID, similar to a unified social credit code. Every month the Brazilian Federal Revenue Service (Receita Federal) publishes the registration data of over 7000 million companies nationwide as a bulk download that anyone can get. CNPJ Aberto turns that dump into searchable, viewable, exportable web pages, plus an API for developers and AI.

Half a year later, its numbers on TrustMRR (a public leaderboard that verifies indie developer revenue through Stripe) are: lifetime revenue $943, monthly subscription revenue $218,38 from 11-07 paying subscriptions.

What it is, and how it charges

  • Free: look up any single company without signing up. A free account lets you save and monitor 3 companies. Advanced search shows only the first 20 results, and the API allows 200 calls per day.
  • Pro: US$10/month by card outside Brazil; annual plan R$449; in Brazil you can pay monthly via Pix. Pro gets the full set: ownership graphs, compliance PDF reports, bulk lookups, prospect lists, CSV export (30k rows per month), natural-language AI search, and 10k API calls per day (from the official pricing page, 11-07).

The homepage shows a real Pro profile card for Magazine Luiza, one of Brazil's best-known retailers, so visitors can see exactly what Pro offers. The About page says its target users are lawyers doing due diligence, accountants managing dozens of clients, journalists tracing ownership, and founders researching competitors.

Where the traffic comes from: a tidy programmatic SEO playbook

This is the most worth studying part.

It doesn't publish all 70M companies. Its sitemap has 231 sub-sitemaps, about 480k URLs in total (counted one by one by 11-07). What gets in is curated: companies people actually search for (sharded by founding year and month), companies with large registered capital, 34k investment funds, listed companies, and listing pages by industry, state, and city. Taking only 70k out of 480M keeps search engines from classifying the whole site as mass-generated thin content. There are also landing pages by profession (lawyers, accountants, credit analysts, journalists), "look up CNPJ by company name" pages, national statistics pages, and an English version.

It deliberately lets AI search crawlers in. Its robots.txt gives ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity's search crawlers their own access, blocking only parameterized URLs and advanced search pages.

It earned a government badge. It registered a "data reuse" project on Brazil's open-data portal dados.gov.br (project No. 246, last modified Oct 7), and the footer across the site says "Included in the Brazilian Open Data Portal". That's a backlink from an official page, and it makes a new site look legitimate. It also runs a subdomain for open-data downloads to attract citations from others.

It used open source to earn backlinks. Its GitHub account was created in Apr 24. Of its 6 repos, 3 are forks of "public API directory" lists, clearly so it could submit PRs and add itself to them. It published SDKs on Python and npm, including an MCP server. But few people use them: the npm package got 99 downloads in the last 30 days, and the repo has 0 stars.

On social media, Instagram gets regular marketing posts, and the X account has just 1 followers. I found no sign of paid ads, a Product Hunt launch, or media coverage (not finding it doesn't mean it doesn't exist).

How much of the 4x gain was its own

First, its own numbers: in Oct 4 it first entered Tranco's global top 1M (Tranco is a website traffic ranking widely used in academia), at rank #917k; Oct 6 530k; Oct 20 166k; Nov 3 best at 116k; Nov 5 122k.

Next, its neighbors over the same month:

WebsiteRank 30 days ago11-05 rank
cnpj.ws310k37k
guiadocnpj.com.br310k75k
empresasdobrasil.com.br309k84k
monitorcnpj.com.br625k261k
cnpjaberto.com.br531k122k

Several of them started around 310k and climbed together in the same month, with some rising even faster than it. The old leaders cnpj.biz and Econodata barely moved. This looks more like a change in the ranking data source or on the search engine side (a Google algorithm change? AI crawlers and API calls counted in?) than growth unique to it (inference). Another signal: in Chrome's real-user data, its Brazil bucket stayed at "top 500k" from May to September, unchanged, and it isn't in the global top 1M (October data not yet out).

So its SEO foundation is real, or a new site from April wouldn't have made this group. But most of the October jump came from the whole category being lifted at once.

Traffic rose, money didn't follow

On TrustMRR, its revenue over the last 30 days was $208, 21% more than the previous 30 days (11-07). Monthly subscription revenue has stayed around $210. Rankings rose 4x, but revenue went up by only thirty to forty dollars.

The reason is easy to see: most visitors search "consulta CNPJ" or a company name, look one up, and leave. The professionals who would pay for bulk export and ownership graphs (lawyers, credit analysts, sales teams) either already use established paid tools or are satisfied with a free site. Sites like this usually make money from ads (cnpj.biz is free and ad-supported) or by selling expensive packages to corporate sales teams (Econodata). A US$10/month self-serve plan converts very poorly.

Who it's competing with

Looking up CNPJ in Brazil is an old category. The data is available to anyone, so there are many sites:

CompetitorsScale (Tranco 11-05)How it differs
cnpj.biz19k, Brazil Chrome top 1000About 6x its size, purely free and ad-supported
Econodata38kAround for 2010 years, sells sales leads at high prices through a sales team
CNPJ.ws37kAPI-first, rose even faster than it in October
Casa dos Dados61kCredit-based pricing, prepaid from R$97, focused on export
CNPJá67kAPI and Excel add-in, from R$24.99, connects to live government endpoints
maiscnpj.com.br158kNew site registered the same month, only simple free lookups
BrasilAPI, minhareceita.org and othersBrasilAPI 230kFree open-source API and MCP, giving away its developer selling point for nothing
Tax authority website16kFree but slow, with CAPTCHAs, and can't show ownership graphs

There's also cnpjzip.com, registered in Oct 22. Its page structure is very similar (advanced search, browse by state, data-period labels), so it looks copied, though I haven't verified that. Over on r/MicroSaaSBR, a Brazilian indie dev forum, someone posted that the tax authority's open CNPJ data is a goldmine for B2B lead gen. A lot of people know about this.

Tactics you can copy

  1. When building programmatic pages from government open data, only put entities people actually search for into the sitemap. Don't bulk-generate everything.
  2. Register 'reuse' on the official open-data portal to get an official badge and backlinks. Then launch a data-download subdomain to attract citations.
  3. Allow AI search crawlers separately in robots.txt, and block parameterized URLs.
  4. One price, all features. Compare against competitors charging per lookup or per credit.

If it were you

In one line: a solid programmatic SEO textbook, not a good follow-on opportunity.

Who it's for: people who already run an open-data site and want to learn how to pick pages and get government backlinks and AI search traffic.

Who it's not for: anyone thinking of building another CNPJ lookup site in Brazil. The niche already has 20+ players, the leader is several times bigger, and even this one is only at $200 a month.

If you build it: pick a country with public company registry data but no polished competitor yet. The UK (Companies House) and France (SIRENE) are already taken. Look for a market where the data is public, official search is clunky, and no modern site ranks yet. Copy the four tactics above. For revenue, don't count on $10 self-serve subscriptions. Start with ads, or sell annual plans directly to accounting firms, law firms, and lending teams.

When to move: no rush. This playbook has no window, only first-mover advantage, and every month fewer countries are still open.

What would mean you read it wrong: if after November it holds a top-120k rank and monthly revenue passes $1,000, the business can still break in in Brazil and subscriptions do convert, so reconsider. Conversely, if it falls back beyond 300k while its peers hold, the category isn't lifting it. Its own SEO is the problem, and treat this playbook with caution.

CNPJ Aberto (cnpjaberto.com.br) research report

Channel: web (pool C1, matches TrustMRR) | Research date 2026-11-07

One line

A Brazilian company (CNPJ) lookup site. It turns the federal tax office's (Receita Federal) monthly public full dataset (70M+ companies) into free lookup pages, then sells a Pro subscription (US$10/month abroad, R$449/year; includes ownership networks, bulk lookup, CSV export, REST API at 10k calls/day, and an MCP server). It registered 2026 years ago in April, and its October Tranco rank jumped from 917k to 116k.

Verdict

The traffic came up. The business didn't. Its traffic comes from a tidy programmatic SEO setup: a curated sitemap of about 480k URLs, AI search crawlers allowed, a government open-data portal reuse badge, open-source SDK/MCP, and backlinks earned by submitting to API lists. But in the same month a whole batch of Brazilian CNPJ lookup sites also rose in Tranco rank, so a large share of its climb is the whole category rising together, not just its own doing. In the month its Tranco rank rose 4×, revenue only went from $189 to $211, with MRR hovering around $200 and 37–38 subscriptions. Its differentiator is "a cheap all-in-one Pro subscription plus AI-facing MCP/API," but that isn't why traffic rose, and it hasn't become money yet.

Traffic lives on the web. It has no app. GitHub has a repo for a Chrome extension (cnpj-chrome-extension), but I found no listing in the Chrome Web Store. The npm package cnpjaberto had 99 downloads in the last 30 days (npm API), so actual SDK/MCP usage is very low.

2. Competitors

CNPJ lookup in Brazil is an old, crowded niche. The Receita Federal has always released full data monthly, so anyone can build a site on it.

Bottom line: it has plenty of competitors, not none. The leaders (cnpj.biz, Econodata) are 3–6 times its size.

3. Growth tactics (evidence)

  1. Programmatic SEO, but not every one of 70M companies is pushed out (confirmed). sitemap.xml lists 231 sub-sitemaps, about 479k URLs in total (2026-11-07 counted by crawling each one):
    • cnpj/demanda/*: companies with search demand, sharded by founding year and month; the legacy shard alone has 23,791 entries;
    • cnpj/capital/*: companies picked out by registered capital;
    • fundos.xml: 33,904 investment funds;
    • There is also bolsa (listed companies), cnaes (industries), and locais (states / cities).

This indexes only the pages that have demand and value, avoiding being judged thin content. There are also landing pages by profession (/solucoes/advogados, contadores, analistas-credito, jornalistas…), a "look up CNPJ by company name" page, a /panorama statistics page, and an English version at /en.

  1. Generative engine optimization (GEO) (confirmed). robots.txt explicitly allows OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User, Claude-SearchBot, Claude-User and PerplexityBot, and only blocks parameterized URLs and the advanced search page.
  2. Getting government endorsement and backlinks (confirmed). It registered a "data reuse" entry on dados.gov.br (reuso/246), and every page footer carries "Iniciativa catalogada no Portal Brasileiro de Dados Abertos". It also opened dados.cnpjaberto.com.br, offering open data downloads to attract backlinks.
  3. Developer channels and link building (confirmed). The GitHub account cnpjaberto was created in 2026-04-24, has 6 repos, and 3 of them are forks of public-apis-style API lists (public-apis, public-apis-1, APIs-PublicasBrasil), the classic "submit a PR to get listed" backlink move. SDKs were published to PyPI and npm with a bundled MCP server (released 2026-04-29), and a blog post covers "checking CNPJ in Claude" (2026-04-28). Usage is still small: npm 30 days with 99 downloads, repo with 0 stars.
  4. Social content (confirmed, small impact). Instagram @cnpjabertobr keeps posting marketing content (search results show posts like "Pode falar com essa empresa"), the Facebook page username is @lista.de.cnpj, and the X account @cnpjabertobr has only 1 followers (TrustMRR). x-radar shows 0 mentions of cnpjaberto in the last 180 days.
  5. Paid ads: nothing in our ad library, and the ads field on the data card is empty. Not finding it doesn't prove there was none, but there's no evidence.
  6. HN / Product Hunt / media: nothing found.

How much of the Tranco climb is its own?

In the same period (October), several sites in the same niche surged together:

SiteRank 30 days agoCurrent rank
cnpj.ws309,99336,564
guiadocnpj.com.br309,69674,617
empresasdobrasil.com.br309,00883,581
monitorcnpj.com.br625,414260,823
informecadastral.com.br640,265 (September)243,528

The long-established leaders cnpj.biz and Econodata barely moved, and Casa dos Dados only rose slightly. All of these started around 310k, a suspiciously uniform pattern that looks more like a change on the ranking data source or search engine side (such as a Google update, or AI crawlers or API calls being counted in the ranking) than growth specific to CNPJ Aberto. Meanwhile its CrUX Brazil bucket has stayed flat from 5 to September (October's CrUX isn't out yet). Per Tranco's notes, climbs lag real traffic by 1–2 weeks, so real users may have grown, but revenue barely followed.

4. Why users come and why they pay

  • Why people come: long-tail searches like "consulta CNPJ" or a specific company name, landing on a company detail page. The need is rigid: lawyers, accountants, credit reviewers, journalists, and salespeople doing due diligence and finding leads.
  • Why people pay: Pro bundles the shareholder network, PDF reports, bulk lookup, CSV export (30k rows a month) and API (10k calls a day), at US$10 a month or R$449 billed yearly. It's cheaper and simpler than Casa dos Dados, which charges per credit, and CNPJá, which charges by API plan. But only 37–38 people pay, so conversion is very low.

5. Differentiation

  • Pricing and packaging: one Pro subscription includes all tools and the API, while competitors mostly charge per call, per credit, or sell the API separately.
  • Built for AI: MCP server, Python/TS SDKs, and AI crawlers explicitly allowed.
  • Trust packaging: a dados.gov.br registration badge, a more modern product UI than the old sites (the homepage shows a real Pro profile card from Magazine Luiza), and an English version.
  • Is that what drove it? No. The traffic comes from programmatic SEO plus a rising niche overall. MCP and API usage is tiny (npm 99 installs per month), and free open-source MCPs already exist. The differentiation so far supports only about $200 a month in revenue.

6. How visible it is

  • Revenue is public on TrustMRR but small (cumulative $943, ranked #4122). The X account has 1 followers, no media or major account has written about it, and x-radar shows 0 mentions. Basically, almost nobody knows about it yet.
  • The niche itself is well known, though: a Reddit r/MicroSaaSBR post is titled "Os dados abertos de CNPJ da Receita são uma mina pra prospecção B2B…", and r/brdev often discusses CNPJ APIs.

7. Copycats

  • cnpjzip.com: registered 2026-10-22 (Verisign RDAP). Its structure closely resembles CNPJ Aberto: /busca-avancada, state browsing at /empresas/<uf>, a "Fonte e competência" source label, and a note on shareholder relations "to avoid confusion with same-name companies". It may have been modeled on it, unverified.
  • maiscnpj.com.br: registered 2026-04-04, launched almost at the same time. It looks like a parallel new entrant rather than one that copied it.

8. What others can learn

  1. For "government open data + programmatic SEO", only put entities with demand into the sitemap (filtered by search demand, registered capital, funds, listed companies). That's less likely to get demoted by search engines than mass-publishing every page.
  2. Register for reuse on the government open data portal to get an official badge and backlinks, and open an open-data download subdomain to attract links.
  3. Give AI search crawlers their own explicit allow in robots.txt while blocking parameterized URLs.
  4. A cheap all-in-one subscription (tools + API), against competitors that charge per call or per credit.
  5. The cautionary lesson: traffic rank rose 4x, but revenue rose only 12%. Tools like this usually make money from ads or high-ticket B2B sales, and self-serve subscriptions at US$10 convert poorly. This playbook is also already crowded in Brazil; rebuilding it in another country or language only makes sense where similar open business registry data exists (such as the UK's Companies House or France's SIRENE, though people are already building on both).

9. Still unclear

  • The reason the whole niche rose together in October (a Google update? AI crawlers or API calls counted in Tranco?) has no direct evidence.
  • October's CrUX isn't published yet, so how much real user traffic grew is unknown.
  • Who the founder is: the registrant on registro.br is Felipe Caon, but several people with the same name appear online (a Recife lawyer, an Instagram account "Empreendedor & Atleta", etc.), and it can't be matched to one.
  • Whether it ran ads: nothing in our library, but that doesn't rule it out.
  • Whether cnpjzip.com deliberately copied it: unverified.
