Iran restores internet, site redoes SEO, same-name App trends: how a Persian podcast site's rankings rose fivefold

What it is A site registered in Sweden that offers free listening to podcasts, music and audiobooks for Persian speakers, and also hosts and pays podcasters who are under sanctions in Iran.

Why it took off After Iran's 88-day internet shutdown ended in June, Persian traffic came back. In early August it resubmitted 48k episode pages to search engines and added an English mirror. At the same time, a same-name Android music App was pulled for copyright and trended, sending a wave of mistaken traffic.

CHow you could follow Don't copy the Persian aggregator playbook wholesale, but borrow two moves: if a language isn't on AdSense's supported list, build an English mirror and split crawlers in robots.txt to qualify for ads; and give every piece of content its own page to capture long-tail search.

Grade C: this rise came from a one-time internet restoration and mistaken traffic from a same-name App, which followers can't replicate. This slot requires Persian fluency and local creator connections, and the content copyright is a gray area. What you can learn is how it monetizes ads and builds SEO, not the business itself. Few people know about it yet

Global rank 189k · 90 days ago, top 1M+

echomusic.app is a site registered in Stockholm where Persian speakers listen to podcasts and music. From August to October, its global rank climbed from 940k to 190k. Looking closer, the rise came mainly from three external events coinciding; the product itself changed little. The most useful thing to learn is how it puts AdSense on a minority-language site. The business itself isn't one to copy.

A robots.txt with comments

In 2026 Aug 2, echomusic.app's Persian sitemap was fully regenerated, listing 28,431 podcast episode pages, 17,619 songs, 811 albums and 588 artists at once. At the same time, a full /en/ English mirror appeared on the site, with an English page for every episode, and fa/en language tags were added to the pages. Comparing the homepage in the Jun 14 web archive: then there was no English mirror and no Google AdSense, and only 1 homepage links pointed to /en/; now there are 120.

The reason for the English mirror is stated in its robots.txt comments: Persian isn't on AdSense's supported language list, so the AdSense and Google Ads crawlers are only let into /en/, while Persian pages stay open to Googlebot for organic search traffic. ads.txt also lists the AdSense publisher ID. In short, the Persian pages bring in search traffic, and the English mirror passes the ad review.

Two or three weeks later, its traffic took off.

What it is

A Persian podcast, music and audiobook site with web, iOS, Android, Mac and Windows clients. The About page says it was founded in September 2022 in Stockholm, Sweden, because "Iran is sanctioned, and Iranian users and artists can't use the major international platforms."

It serves two groups:

  • Listeners: free to listen; most content is aggregated from other RSS feeds, with some popular foreign podcasts subtitled in Persian (the homepage shows the Joe Rogan show), plus singers like Shahin Najafi who barely appear on domestic Iranian platforms.
  • Podcasters: the podcaster page says you can host your show with them, get an RSS address that distributes to every podcast client, access a stats dashboard, and use pay-per-play and promotion packages. The top of the page reads "1000+ Active Users Now".

Money comes from three sources: AdSense (only on the English mirror; whether it actually serves ads is unverified), self-serve local ads (the homepage currently shows an ad for a currency exchange, صرافی بابیت; judging by the ad link IDs, there are only single-digit advertisers, an inference), and the podcasters' promotion packages. Revenue has never been disclosed.

The client footprint is tiny: the "Echo Podcast" App Store listing has 22 ratings in the US store, the Google Play app has 10K+ downloads, and the store page still shows an update date from October 2023 (all checked 11-07). Nearly all the traffic is on the web.

How the ranking climbed

This was a step change: after October it leveled off around 188K and never kept climbing. Chrome's real-user buckets match: in June it was still in the global top 1M, and by August it had entered the top 100K. By country, Germany jumped from the top 500K in May to the top 50K in September, and Canada and the Netherlands entered the top 100K.

Three causes stand out, and they can't be cleanly separated:

1. Iran restores internet access. Iran cut nationwide internet for about 88 days from January 8, 2026, during protests, and access came back at the end of May / early June (Guardian 5-26, NPR 6-02). echomusic's bucket starts moving up month by month from June, and other Persian-language sites rose at the same time: the ebook site fidibo.com went from 220K to 110K in 90 days, and rapop.ir went from 150K to 88K. Iranian users reach the open web through VPNs, with exits mostly in Germany and the Netherlands, which matches where it grew fastest. This part is inference.

2. SEO overhaul in early August. 48K long-tail pages were resubmitted to search engines at once, plus an English mirror, which roughly doubled search coverage.

3. Borrowed attention from a same-name app. On Android, a third-party YouTube Music client also called "Echo Music" (site echomusic.fun) went viral on Spanish-language TikTok this summer, with single videos reaching 368K views. Around 19 August it was taken down over a copyright notice, then came back a few days later. echomusic.fun's ranking curve tracks echomusic.app almost exactly: about 510K in early August, 180K in September, 95K in October. echomusic.app also appears in Chrome rankings in countries with few Persian speakers, such as Brazil, Spain, Italy, India, Indonesia and Japan, which overlap with the Android app's audience. Searching "Echo Music app shut down copyright" returns echomusic.app's copyright policy page, and people who type the domain from memory or search "echo music" can land there. This is a strong inference; most visitors who arrive by mistake leave quickly.

Social media is not the cause. The Instagram account @echomusic.official has 23.9K followers, and almost nobody mentions it on X; searching "echomusic" on TikTok returns mostly the Android app.

Who it's competing with

ProductScaleHow echomusic differs
Castboxcastbox.fm has about 6,000 users globally; per a podnews article from April, it accounts for more than 80% of podcast listening in IranGeneral-purpose podcast client, does not host content or pay creators, and is often blocked in Iran
شنوتو ShenotoAbout 124K users globally, hosts 8,000+ Persian-language podcastsIranian domestic company; works on domestic networks but has to pass censorship
Fidibo / Taaghche / Navaar110K / 45K / 580K usersAudiobook and ebook store; podcasts are a side feature
Radio Javan and other Persian music sitesradiojavan.com has about 170K usersMusic only
Spotify / Apple PodcastsGlobalSanctioned; Iranian users can't pay, and Iranian creators can't receive payouts

Castbox and Shenoto are each more than ten times its size. echomusic occupies the gap between them: the company is offshore and not subject to Iranian censorship, and it runs payments specifically for sanctioned Iranian creators and advertisers. Spotify and Castbox can't enter this gap because of sanctions, and Shenoto won't touch it because of censorship.

Its weaknesses are also clear: much of the content is aggregated or reposted, the rights to subtitled foreign shows are gray, and apart from SEO and this niche positioning, it has no real moat.

What you can learn from it

  1. How to get AdSense on a minority-language site. If your language isn't on AdSense's supported list, build an English mirror and use robots.txt to allow crawlers separately: search crawlers index the native-language pages, while the ad crawler only sees the English pages. Anyone building a content site in a language outside the list can try this (check the AdSense help pages for supported languages first).
  2. One page per episode for long-tail coverage. Each podcast episode and each song gets its own page, with 48K pages submitted at once. Anyone building an aggregator can follow this approach.
  3. The gap in sanctioned or censored markets. Put the company offshore, pay local creators, and give local advertisers a self-serve ad entry point. Big companies can't enter, and local companies won't dare.
  4. A caution in the other direction: when you see a competitor's ranking jump, first check whether a same-name product is having its own moment. Part of this traffic came in by accident.

If it were you

In one sentence: there's something to learn, but it's not worth copying. Its rise came from a connection being restored and a same-name app's notoriety, and you can't replicate either. The gap can only be worked if you speak Persian yourself and know the Iranian creator community.

Who it suits: people already running minority-language content sites who struggle to get AdSense approved can directly use the English-mirror plus robots-split trick; small teams whose native language belongs to a sanctioned or censored market (such as Dari or Tajik) and who have connections in the local creator scene can study the combo of offshore entity + creator revenue share + local advertising.

Who it doesn't suit: people who don't speak the language or know local creators; people hoping to earn by aggregating other people's podcasts and music (the rights are gray, and one takedown complaint wipes everything out); and people who assume the ranking is organic growth and want to copy that curve.

How to build it: pick a language that AdSense doesn't support but that has many internet users, and build an aggregator with one page per item, plus an English mirror with separate robots rules for each crawler. Once traffic builds, open a self-serve local ad entry point for merchants who can't use Google Ads.

How to acquire users: almost entirely through search, so the more long-tail pages the better. On the creator side, the pull is "you can get paid here," which the big platforms can't offer.

Timing: there is no clear deadline. The return of users when Iran restored access was a one-time wave, and it has already passed.

How we'd be wrong: (1) if echomusic.app stays within 200K after the same-name app's notoriety fades, or keeps climbing, then the return of Iranian users and the SEO traffic are real, and this niche is bigger than it looks; (2) conversely, if it drops back beyond 500K by early next year, the jump was mostly accidental traffic from the same-name app, and the only thing worth keeping is the AdSense approach.

echomusic.app (Echo Music & Podcast / اکو موسیقی) research report

Channel: web (C2 pool; we had not seen it in our other databases before this pull). Data as of 2026-11-07.

One line

A Persian-language aggregator and hosting site for podcasts, music and audiobooks. Registered in Stockholm, Sweden, in 2022 (the App Store seller is Echo company AB), with iOS, Android, Mac and Windows clients, but traffic is mainly on the web. Its Tranco rank jumped from outside the million to about 190K between 2026 8 and September. We think this jump was not a sudden product improvement but three things stacking up: Iran's 88-day internet shutdown ending (June), a major SEO and monetization overhaul in early August, and accidental traffic from the same-name Android YouTube Music client "Echo Music," which was taken down in August and trended.

1. Growth data (our traffic database)

  • Tranco: 2026-08-20 rank 940,918 → 09-03 625,273 → 09-17 336,448 → 10-01 225,724 → 10-08 190,544, then flat around 188K (11-05 is 188,572). This was a step change, not a sustained climb. Tranco is a 30-day rolling average, so working backward, the real-traffic jump falls around mid-to-late August.
  • CrUX global bucket: 2026-06 top 1M → 07 top 500K → 08 top 100K → 09 top 100K.
  • CrUX by country (2026-09): Germany top 50K (still top 500K in May); Canada and the Netherlands top 100K; the US, UK, France, Italy, Poland, Turkey, Australia, Spain and Brazil top 500K; India, Indonesia and Japan top 1M. CrUX covers only 21 countries and does not include Iran.
  • Very small app footprint: the App Store "Echo Podcast" (id1618123000) has only 22 ratings in the US store (iTunes lookup, 2026-11-07). On Google Play, com.echo.music has 10K+ downloads and 87 reviews, and the store page shows an update date still stuck at 2023-10-05 (Play page, 2026-11-07). So most of the traffic is on the web.

Bottom line: this niche isn't short on competitors. Castbox and Shenoto are more than ten times its size. Its spot is the one slot that is 'registered abroad, uncensored in Iran, pays Iranian creators'.

3. Where users came from (growth tactics)

  1. Platform event: Iran's internet came back (the timing lines up). 2026-01-08 Iran cut its internet nationwide during the protests, for about 88 days, from late May to early June (Guardian 2026-05-26, NPR 2026-06-02, Wikipedia "2026 Internet blackout in Iran"). echomusic's CrUX numbers climbed month by month starting in June, right on schedule. Over the same stretch, the Persian-language sites fidibo.com (Tranco 221,880 → 114,439) and rapop.ir (151,938 → 88,055) also grew over 90 days (traffic database), which suggests the whole Persian-language web is coming back. Iranian users who get around the block via VPN tend to exit through IPs in Germany and the Netherlands, which matches the sharpest gains in Germany (up from 50k) and the Netherlands. That the German and Dutch traffic is mostly Iranian users on VPNs is an inference, though.
  2. SEO overhaul (confirmed). The robots.txt and sitemaps look like the work of someone who really knows SEO: the Persian sitemap was regenerated under 2026-08-02 and contains 28,431 podcast episode pages, 17,619 songs, 811 albums, and 588 artists. They also built a full /en/ English mirror (the English sitemap also has 28,431 podcast pages), with hreflang (fa/en), og tags, and two ld+json blocks. Comparing the homepage on Wayback 2026-06-14 with today: back then there was no hreflang, no AdSense, no local ad slots, and only 1 links pointing to /en/; now the homepage has 120 /en/ links. The overhaul landed 2–3 weeks before the traffic jump.
  3. Monetization overhaul (confirmed). ads.txt lists a Google AdSense publisher ID (pub-4439198451920843). The comments in robots.txt are blunt: Persian isn't on AdSense's supported-language list, so only the AdSense and Ads crawlers are let into the /en/ English mirror, while the Persian pages stay open to Googlebot to collect organic search traffic. In other words, half of the English mirror exists so AdSense can legitimately run on Persian content. They also built a self-serve 'local ads' system (/local-ads, with ad-click.php?id=9 suggesting advertisers are still in single digits), and the homepage is already running ads for an exchange called Babyt. Iranian advertisers can't use Google Ads, and this fills that gap.
  4. Probable name mix-up (strong inference). The Android third-party YouTube Music client "Echo Music" (GitHub EchoMusicApp/Echo-Music, 2,319 stars, site echomusic.fun) took off in summer 2026 through Spanish-speaking TikTok creators: two williamz.tech videos at 179k and 141k views, and a handyspiele7 video at 368k (TikHub search). Around Aug 19 it went offline after a copyright notice (GitHub issue #23,2026-08-19), then came back a few days later (issues #45, #203). echomusic.fun's Tranco curve moved almost in sync with echomusic.app: 08-06 511k → 09-10 184k → 10-08 95k. echomusic.app also entered the CrUX charts in countries that are not Persian-speaking, such as Brazil, Spain, Italy, Poland, Turkey, India, Indonesia and Japan, which overlap with echomusic.fun's audience countries. One more detail: searching "Echo Music app shut down copyright" returns echomusic.app's /en/copyright-policy page. Users who guess the domain "echomusic.app", or search "echo music", land there. How much traffic this is can't be quantified, and most of it probably bounces right away.
  5. Social media. Instagram @echomusic.official has 23.9k followers and 231 posts; the Facebook page targets podcast creators for onboarding; our local X corpus (x-radar, last 90 days) has zero mentions. Searching 'echomusic' on TikTok returns only the same-named Android app. Social media is not the cause of this jump.
  6. Paid acquisition: not found in our ad library (it isn't on the tracked list, so absence proves nothing), no evidence.

4. Why it took off

  • Caught the wave of 'Iran's internet returns + Persian web flowing back'. Evidence: CrUX climbs from June, and other Persian sites rise at the same time.
  • In early August they reorganized 48k indexable pages and built a bilingual mirror, which broadened the long-tail SEO footprint all at once. Evidence: sitemap lastmod is 2026-08-02; compare the Wayback June homepage with today.
  • Occupies a structural gap in positioning: registered in Sweden, content not subject to Iranian censorship, offers hosting for Iranian creators and pay-per-play payouts (Pay-Per-Play, as stated on the podcast-landing page), and serves Iranian advertisers. These are things Spotify and Apple can't do because of sanctions, and Shenoto can't do because of censorship. Evidence: the About page and podcast-landing page.
  • A same-named product went viral and then ran into trouble, passively collecting a wave of brand searches. Evidence: the two domains' curves move together, and their country distributions overlap.

5. Differentiation

What sets it apart from Castbox and Shenoto isn't the player itself but its identity and monetization: a foreign entity, uncensored, able to pay Iranian creators, able to sell Iranian local ads, and it also adds Persian subtitles to popular foreign podcasts like Joe Rogan (there are /video/joe-rogan-… pages on the homepage). This is why it can keep creators and build up 48k episodes of content, but it is not the direct cause of this traffic jump. The jump came mainly from external events (the internet returning, the same-named product's trouble) and the SEO overhaul. Most of its content is aggregated from other people's RSS feeds, plus reposts and subtitling, so copyright is a gray area and the moat is weak.

6. Visibility

Few people know about it yet. Zero English-media coverage, zero mentions in x-radar, revenue never disclosed. The podnews 2026-04 analysis of the Iranian podcast market doesn't name it either. The traffic is also contaminated by visitors from the same-named app, so outsiders could easily overestimate it based on rankings.

7. Takeaways

  • When building a content site for a language that isn't on AdSense's supported list, you can qualify for AdSense with an 'English mirror + per-crawler robots rules' setup: the Persian pages earn organic search traffic, and the English mirror passes ad review and carries the ads. This works for other minority-language sites too.
  • In language markets that are sanctioned or censored, 'foreign entity + local creator payouts + self-serve local ads' can occupy the slot that big platforms can't enter and local players won't touch (Dari in Afghanistan and Tajik are comparable cases).
  • One standalone page per episode, mass-producing long-tail SEO pages.
  • Note: a viral same-named product can bring free traffic to your domain. Conversely, when researching rankings, first rule out this kind of collision.

8. Still unclear

  • We can't separate how much of the jump comes from each of the three sources (Iranian users on VPNs, diaspora Iranians abroad, same-name collisions), since we have no referral-channel data.
  • That German and Dutch traffic mainly comes from Iranian VPN exits is an inference.
  • Not verified: whether AdSense was actually approved and is actually serving ads (the pages contain adsbygoogle code, but no running ads were seen).
  • Not verified: the actual scale of creator payouts, or whether Pay-Per-Play is still operating.
  • Whether this traffic can be kept: Tranco has been flat since October, and once the same-name buzz fades it could fall back.
