A free browser, bought with funding, earned 22k stars: how ego lite pushed 'a browser for AI'

What it is A free Chromium browser that imports your Chrome logins with one click, so agents like Claude Code, Codex, and Cursor can browse and work inside their own area without grabbing your mouse and tabs.

Why it took off 2026 Everyone is using agents, and they all hit the same wall: agents can't get into sites that require login, and they fight humans for the browser. The team first built traction among Chinese-language AI KOLs, then recruited local Korean creators, and in October used the Windows release to pay creators on X, YouTube, and TikTok, each with a tracking link.

CHow you could follow Stop building yet another agent browser; copy its distribution. Turn your own agent capability into a skill that installs into Claude Code, Codex, or Cursor with one command, get a few credible people in one language's AI community using it first, then recruit creators country by country, each with a tracking link.

C grade: the category already has official offerings from Anthropic and OpenAI, Tencent, and several open-source projects with tens of thousands of stars; ego itself was pushed by paid funding, not by organic demand. Followers can't beat the official products or outspend it. What's worth learning is the skill distribution and the country-by-country creator playbook. What's being whispered in small circles

Global rank 115k · 90 days ago 608k

ego lite is a free browser for AI agents like Claude Code, Codex, and Cursor: it carries your Chrome logins over with one click, and agents work in their own area without grabbing your mouse or tabs. Its global website rank climbed from around 600k to 110k over 90 days, and its GitHub repo has 22k stars. But the same thing had at least a dozen players in the first half of 2026, including ones from big companies and open-source projects with more stars than it has. It's in front mainly because the team raised funding and spent it on creator promotion country after country. Below: what it is, where the users come from, why it's free, who's competing, and what you can take away.

A tweet with 90k views

On the morning of Sep 7, 2026, a Chinese AI-community influencer, 向阳乔木 (@vista8.12), posted:

Given how powerful GPT6-Astra is, it's worth installing a separate browser just for it (otherwise it fights you for the one you're using). Huang Shu recommended ego lite, so I handed the install to Codex with this prompt: "Install the ego lite browser, configure it with the same cookies and login info as Chrome, then use this browser for Computer Use from now on." It was installed in a few minutes, with one-click import of Chrome's login info. Very smooth.

This post has reached 92k views so far. Look at what it's actually about: not a new feature, but a frustration everyone using an Agent has hit. When an Agent needs to log into a site, it has to use your browser, and when it uses your browser, it fights you for the screen. One person recommends it to another, who has Codex install it, all in a single prompt.

That was when its GitHub stars were climbing fastest. In early August, Chinese tech media covered it, with about 7,900 stars. In September, 10 a blogger wrote a review saying 15,666 (according to that review). In November, 7 21,896.

What it is

ego lite is a Chromium-based desktop browser that runs on macOS. A Windows beta came out in October 19. You can open it and use it as your everyday browser. During setup, one click imports Chrome's bookmarks, extensions, and cookies, so sites you're logged into in Chrome are logged in here too.

The part for Agents is a skill called ego-browser (a plugin for Agents). Running npx skills add citrolabs/ego-lite installs it into Claude Code, Codex, or Cursor. After that, typing /ego-browser in the Agent makes it open its own "Space" in the browser to do the work. You keep using your own tabs, and when it hits two-factor auth or a CAPTCHA, it hands that page back to you to click through.

Technically, it differs from most similar tools in one way. Most of them have the Agent send one command per step (click here, type that, take a screenshot). ego has the Agent write a JavaScript snippet that runs the whole task at once. Its website shows a comparison table of its own tests: an average of 398 seconds per task versus 587–648 seconds for the other four tools; a success rate of 93.5% versus 61%–77%; and $1.64 per task versus $2.43–4.95. Those are its own numbers. An independent review found that when things went well, it finished in 1 calls, 16 seconds, and $0.12, but when the state was bad, it took 30 rounds and 3 minutes, slower than its rivals. The difference came down to whether the Agent had full permissions. The same review also noted that cookies aren't isolated between Spaces, creating a risk of injected instructions from web pages.

The GitHub repo has no browser source code, just the skill, docs, and instructions in 9 languages. The browser itself is closed-source and free to download.

Who is behind it

The team is Citro Labs, founded by Aute with co-founder David Xu. It's a Chinese-American team. ego lite wasn't what they originally set out to build. A tech outlet, Silicon Star, explained the backstory in an October 12 article: the team had been building a general-purpose Agent called ego. Then Codex quickly took the market, and they found themselves head-to-head with OpenAI, so they held off on launch. "But investors seemed unable to wait," so the team split out ego's browser capability and turned it into a browser for "humans and AI to share," to "first hand investors a wave of growth numbers." The article then adds: "Ego lite's growth and retention really are excellent."

That sentence determines how you should read all of its numbers: this is a product that doesn't plan to earn money from users and exists to prove growth, funded by the company's fundraising. A startup-data site recorded a seed round for Citro Labs, but the amount and investors are unverified.

Where users come from

Its website's global rank (Tranco, updated daily) has climbed like this: Aug 6 608k, early September 250k, early October 150k, Nov 5 115k. In 90 days it climbed more than 5x and never dropped, only slowing down after October. Broken down by country, using real Chrome user visits, it hit the top 100k in South Korea in September, the highest of any country; Taiwan, Australia, Southeast Asia, Turkey and Poland all reached the top 500k. Globally it still isn't in the top 1M. The site is just a download page, and users rarely come back once installed, so web rank underestimates real usage.

Lining up the timeline against channels shows it was built up layer by layer:

Three things are worth noting here.

First, Hacker News and Reddit didn't work. Many open-source projects get their traffic from a single HN front-page run. ego tried twice and neither took off. It grew through sustained, budgeted promotion.

Second, each influencer gets their own tracking link, link.ego.app/<influencer name>. This makes it possible to measure how many downloads each promotion brings, so budget can be shifted toward the people and countries with the best returns. South Korea's sharp climb in rankings matches how densely they covered that market.

Third, the GitHub repo is a storefront, not the product. The repo contains only the skill and docs, but 22k stars keep it showing up in articles about "open-source alternatives" and "trending on GitHub," and influencer videos love to cite "21k stars." The repo also reached #4 on GitHub's daily JavaScript trending list and #4 on the monthly one. In the last week, stars rose by only 1,045, half the previous week's pace, so it's cooling off.

Where the money comes from

The money isn't coming from users. The personal version is free forever with no sign-up required, and the pricing page on the site shows 404, with only an enterprise tier at "custom quote." Whether the enterprise tier has any paying customers is unknown.

According to Silicon Star, the real payoff is what investors see: user counts, retention, and stars. The influencer fees and content spend are funding the next round for the parent product, ego. So this is a business of "buying growth with fundraising," not one of "users paying."

Who it's competing with

In the first half of 2026, more than a dozen products nearly simultaneously appeared around the idea of "letting an Agent use your logged-in browser":

ProductWhenScaleCompared with ego lite
Claude in Chrome (Anthropic's official extension)2025–2026OfficialRuns in your own Chrome, takes over your tabs, and only serves Claude

ego isn't the first, and it isn't the only technical approach. What sets it apart is that it packaged this into a finished product a person can use as an everyday browser: one-click Chrome import, separate Spaces, and CAPTCHAs handed back to the human. The picture of "the Agent works alongside me while I browse normally" can be captured in a few seconds, which is why the influencer videos convert well. But within months, Tencent and browser-use shipped similar products with the same slogan, and individual projects like huashu-chrome (alchaincyf) and jackwener/BrowserMCP are following too. The product difference is a hook that makes promotion work. What really pushed it up was distribution.

If it were you

C. Don't build another "browser for Agents"; copy its distribution. This category already has official offerings from two big companies, a Tencent product, and several open-source projects with tens of thousands of stars. ego itself bought its way in country by country with fundraising money, and it charges nothing and doesn't plan to. An individual or small team copying the product can't beat the official versions, and copying the promotion can't beat those with funding.

Who it's for: developers or small teams building a capability for some Agent (beyond the browser: editing video, making spreadsheets, operating a certain SaaS, querying certain data), who have a bit of promotion budget or some clout in an AI community in a particular language.

Who it's not for: anyone who wants to compete head-on as an "Agent browser"; anyone counting on a single Show HN or Reddit post to take off (ego tried both and neither worked); anyone hoping to earn subscriptions from individual users (this crowd is technical, knows what the API is worth, and rarely pays long-term for a wrapper layer; a founder quoted in the Silicon Star article says the same).

How to do it: package your capability as an Agent skill, so a single npx skills add installs it into Claude Code, Codex, or Cursor. Include plugin configs for all three in the repo so users can type one slash command inside their Agent. Put the skill, docs, and multi-language instructions on GitHub to collect stars and listings in directories. The core can be closed-source and free, or open-source. Pitch only one scenario that can be captured on camera in a few seconds.

How to acquire users: first get three to five respected people in one language's AI community to actually use it (this is how ego's Chinese and Korean communities got going), then find local influencers by country, give each one a tracking link with their name, and calculate how many installs each brings. Concentrate the push around a release (a new platform, a new version). Submit to every skill directory.

Deadline: Agent skill directories and plugin marketplaces aren't saturated yet, and Anthropic and OpenAI haven't yet turned their plugin marketplaces into something that only shows official picks. Get in before the first half of 2027, or the entry points will likely be taken over by the platforms.

Signs you've misjudged it: ① after ego stops paying influencers, its website ranking falls back below 300k within a few months and stars grow by fewer than a few dozen a day, showing the bought growth doesn't stick and the approach was just burning cash; ② Anthropic or OpenAI's official plugin marketplaces start giving exposure only to a few partners, narrowing the distribution path for third-party skills to directories and npx; ③ the reverse: ego raises its next round, or the enterprise tier publicly names paying customers, which would show that "use a free tool to gather data, then sell the parent product" works and is worth copying more seriously.

Data & sources: site rank comes from Tranco's daily ranks and Chrome real-user per-country buckets (2026-08 to 11-05); GitHub repo citrolabs/ego-lite star records (up to 11-07) and GitHub Trending; the ego lite site (11-06, speed comparisons are the company's own tests); Silicon Star's 《去你的 AI 应用梦吧》 (10-12) and weekly picks (08-02); heyuan110 review (09-10); Sponsorbloom's YouTube sponsorship records (up to 10-28); posts from X accounts @vista8 (09-07), @kimmonismus, and @hasantoxr (around 10-20); two Show HN posts on Hacker News; Korean Naver and DCInside posts. Installs, retention, ad spend and funding amounts are not public; where the text says 未核实, it means unverified.

ego (lite) / ego.app: why it took off

Channel: web (ego.app, pool C1; matched to GitHub citrolabs/ego-lite and the HN Show HN). Research date 2026-11-07.

One line

ego (lite) is a closed-source, free Chromium browser from Citro Labs (founder Aute, co-founder David Xu; a Chinese-founded team whose parent product, a general-purpose agent called 'ego', is still on a waitlist), plus an MIT-licensed ego-browser skill. It imports your real Chrome login state, cookies and extensions, and lets Claude Code, Codex or Cursor work in their own 'Space' inside the browser without taking over your mouse or tabs. It grew mainly through distribution: first it built traction among Chinese AI KOLs and tech media, then ran country-specific creator campaigns (Korea most visibly), and in October it rode the Windows release, buying paid creator promotion heavily on X, YouTube, TikTok and Instagram, with each creator getting a link.ego.app/<creator name> tracking link. The GitHub repo holds only the skill and docs, with 9-language READMEs; the 22k stars are the storefront for this playbook. The product has a real edge (people and agents share one everyday browser, and JS scripts run the whole task at once instead of one CLI step at a time), but many open-source tools do similar things, and that edge alone doesn't explain the growth.

  • CrUX (traffic.crux_domain, origin is lite.ego.app): 2026-06 first appeared (ca/gb/in top 1M); in July au/kr/tw/vn entered the top 500k, and us/jp/id entered the top 1M; in September Korea entered the top 100k, au/id/ph/pl/th/tr/tw/vn reached the top 500k, and de/es newly entered the top 1M. The global bucket still isn't in the top 1M. Traffic lands on web pages (the site plus the download page), while the product itself is a desktop app that users rarely return to the site for, so web rank understates real usage.
  • GitHub (github.repo_profile / repo_day, backfilled from Wayback): repo created 2026-04-16; 07-29 5,769 stars → 09-01 14,616 → 10-22 18,670 → 11-07 21,896, forks 1,242. Verdict: the need for 'let an agent use the browser you're already logged into' was spotted by a dozen-plus companies almost simultaneously in the first half of 2026. ego wasn't first, and it isn't the only one technically. What sets it apart is that it became a finished App a person can actually use as their everyday browser (import from Chrome, Space isolation, 2FA/captcha handed off to the human), plus a skill that works across any agent.

Growth tactics (evidence)

  1. Paid creators, one tracking link each (confirmed). link.ego.app/<creator>: on X, hasantoxr and kimmonismus (posts tagged "Paid partnership"); on YouTube, EmbarkX, Ravikanth, wtf-code, Cloud Codes and others (one states "This video is sponsored by Citro Labs"); on TikTok/IG/Shorts, sayed.developer and mystic-js (tagged "Ad"); Korean YouTube with 2511. Sponsorbloom logged 9 YouTube sponsorships from 10 creators, 30 in the last 4 days, the latest on 10-28, mostly AI/automation channels (3K–96K views each).
  2. Chinese AI KOLs and tech media (confirmed; timing lines up with the star surge from 7 to September): aiwarts hands-on review (7-30), Silicon Star weekly picks (8-02), laogui, Huangshu, Xiangyang Qiaomu (9-792k views), the "Super practical! Recommended" series on Zhihu/Cnblogs/CSDN/Tencent Cloud (near-identical titles, looks like the same placed piece, paid status unverified), and a Bilibili "Windows version the comments begged for."
  3. Localized by country (confirmed): the README is in 9 languages including Chinese, English, Japanese, Korean, Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese and Russian; Korea has Naver blog posts, DCInside threads and several Korean YouTube tutorials, and CrUX puts Korea in the top 100k on September, the highest of any country; the official site's "Used by people at" section names LINE, NHN and Hyundai Motor.
  4. Distribution through agent entry points (confirmed): npx skills add citrolabs/ego-lite writes it into the Claude Code / Codex / Cursor skills directories, and the app install also auto-links into ~/.agents/skills/; the repo ships .claude-plugin, .cursor-plugin and .codex directories; it's listed on skill directory sites like skills.sh, SkillsLLM, tessl, getclaudeskills and QAI. A user typing /ego-browser in their agent is already using it.
  5. Platform event / release timing (confirmed): the 10-19 Windows beta and the paid creator push launched the same day; 9-10 v2.0 landed just as the Chinese KOL wave hit.
  6. SEO and comparison content (confirmed): the official blog runs "Best alternative to browser-use and agent-browser" and "47%–63% faster in our own bench"; there are many listing pages on tool sites like mindstudio, infrabase, opensourcealternatives, hoangyell and dashen-tech.
  7. HN / Reddit: HN didn't take off on either attempt; Reddit has same-day organic-looking posts in r/startups_promotion, r/AIAgentsInAction and r/indiebiz (possibly official or agency-batched), plus an r/ClaudeCode comparison of the official extension vs ego lite. Limited impact.

Where the money comes back: the personal version is free forever with no signup (lite.ego.app/pricing 404), and only the enterprise tier is "custom quote." Silicon Star put it bluntly: ego lite is a product for handing investors growth numbers, and the real thing being sold is the parent product, ego. The paid acquisition is funded by financing, and the return is the stars, user counts and retention that go into fundraising materials (aVenture.vc logged a Citro Labs seed round, but the amount doesn't match, unverified).

Why it's working

  • The need showed up right then: over the past 2026 years, Claude Code and Codex became high-frequency entry points, and people kept hitting the same wall: "the agent can't get into sites that require login, and it grabs my browser." Official options (Claude in Chrome, Codex Chrome Use) either fight you for tabs or lock you into one vendor.
  • The form factor is low-effort: no API key, no cloud browser bill, no proxy needed; two commands to install, and Chrome logins and extensions import in one click; handOff lets a human step in for 2FA/captchas. Chinese reviews keep stressing "zero cost, zero config" and "no proxy needed."
  • Distribution is far more aggressive than comparable tools: most open-source competitors get one burst on HN/X, while ego runs funded, sustained campaigns: Chinese KOLs → local Korean creators → October global paid creators, each channel with its own tracking link so ROI can be measured.
  • GitHub stars as the storefront: the repo contains no browser source, only the skill, docs and a 9-language README, but 22k stars keep it showing up in "open-source alternative" and "GitHub trending" content, and creator videos love citing "21k stars."
  • Retention: Silicon Star (10-12) says "growth and retention are genuinely excellent"; Tranco has risen steadily for 90 days with no drop-off, which also suggests installed users are actually using it (though Tranco can also be inflated by download pages and update checks).

Differentiation

  • Compared with the official extensions, browser-harness and BrowserSkill: ego is a standalone Chromium that people can also use as their everyday browser; the agent works in its own Space while you keep using your own tabs.
  • Compared with agent-browser and Playwright/DevTools MCP: the agent writes one block of JS and runs it in a single pass (heredoc), instead of one CLI/MCP call per step, so self-testing is faster and cheaper in tokens. heyuan110 tested it: when things were working, 1 tool calls, 16 seconds, $0.12; when they weren't, 30 rounds and 3 minutes, slower than agent-browser, with the difference coming down to Claude Code's permission settings.
  • Is that why it took off? Partly: "humans and agents work in parallel without fighting over the screen" is easy to explain and easy to film as a demo, which is why paid creator conversion was good. But the technical moat is low: Tencent, browser-use and Huashu shipped nearly the same pitch within months, and independent reviews flag that Spaces don't isolate cookies, that privileged Node plus raw CDP carries prompt-injection risk, and that the speed advantage only holds in full-permission mode. So distribution is the main driver; the product difference is the hook that makes distribution work.

Visibility

It's circulating in small circles, mostly in Chinese and Korean AI communities: Silicon Star has written about it twice, PingWest covered it (per recall records), and Chinese KOLs and overseas AI creators have posted about it (mostly paid). No public revenue (it's free by design), not on TrustMRR, and no coverage from mainstream English outlets like TechCrunch.

Copycats

  • Tencent/BrowserSkill (2026-06-22,10,133 stars): nearly the same pitch.
  • alchaincyf/huashu-chrome (2026-08-26,576 stars): "Let any AI agent operate your own Chrome, with all your logins."
  • jackwener/BrowserMCP (2026-09-17,130 stars): "Persistent JavaScript workspace" plus logged-in state, the same code-based approach as ego.
  • imshaikot/browsentic (2026-07-24,277 stars), woniu9524/open-web-bridge (2026-08-09,114 stars).
  • Others are building secondary skills on top of it (deathcats4/ego-literature-download).

What to borrow

  • Packaging the capability as an agent skill/plugin: one npx skills add puts it into Claude Code/Codex/Cursor, with no need to educate users from scratch.
  • Open-source storefront + closed-source core: the repo only holds the skill, docs and multilingual READMEs, collecting stars and directory listings, while the core binary is free to download.
  • Creator campaigns with one tracking link each, localized content by country (README in 9 languages, dedicated Korea push), concentrated around releases (the Windows beta).
  • The pitch is explained through a scenario that fits a 15-second video: "the agent works alongside me while I use my browser as usual."

Uncertain

  • Real desktop install counts and retention numbers aren't public; how much of the Tranco climb came from download pages and update checks is unknown.
  • Whether the Chinese "recommended" articles are paid placements is unverified; total spend is unknown (Sponsorbloom is behind a paywall).
  • Funding: aVenture.vc logged a Citro Labs seed round, which matches Silicon Star's "investors can't wait" claim, but the amount and investors are unverified.
  • Whether the enterprise tier has paying customers, and when the parent product ego launches, is unknown.
