Save one cubic meter of gas, get cash: Iran's Energyn hit the global top 260k websites within two months, riding a policy window and advertorials

What it is An Iranian web app: you enter your gas account number, report meter readings weekly, and get cash back for every cubic meter you use below last year's level; the money can be withdrawn.

Why it took off Iran is short on gas in winter, and the government is pushing a "save gas, earn a certificate, the certificate can be sold" scheme, so "save gas, get paid" became a buzzword. It launched ahead of the heating season, bought advertorials on major news sites and placed content on local government accounts, using the hook "up to 50M tomans," and users could sign up within two minutes of landing on the site.

CHow you could apply this Don't copy the Iranian one. Take the structure: wrap government mechanisms like energy-saving certificates and demand response into a consumer pitch of "save X, get cash," run it on a landing page, and acquire users with native ads on news sites. This only works if your country has comparable policies and you have access to metering data.

C-grade: its traction came from this season's Iranian gas policy, the energy-saving certificate qualification, and the account-number data access that the operator built over 20 years in the gas industry, none of which followers can get; the early mover Mahaan has also been at it for two years. What's transferable is the playbook of "turning government incentives into consumer cash" plus "web-first advertorial distribution." Few people know about it yet

Energyn (انرژین) is a Persian-language web app. Users link their home gas account number and report their meter reading each week. If they used less gas than the same period last year, they get cash back in their wallet, paid per cubic meter saved. The domain was only registered in late August, and by early November it had climbed to roughly #250k on the global website rankings, gaining about ten thousand places a day. The product itself isn't new; someone in Iran has been running a version for two years. What pushed it up was timing with Iran's winter gas shortage, a policy window, plus paid placements on a news site. This piece covers how it took off, where the money might come from, why you probably can't follow it, and which move is worth taking away.

A news article marked "ad/"

At 10:07 on the morning of Sep 25, 2026 (Iranian calendar 1405/07/03), the economy section of akharinkhabar, one of Iran's biggest news aggregators, ran an article titled《از امروز با صرفه‌جویی در مصرف گاز پاداش نقدی بگیر》, meaning "Starting today, save on gas and get cash rewards." The first characters of the body are "ad/", i.e. an ad. The next sentence:

Enter your gas account number into Energyn, and the site automatically calculates how much you've saved compared with before and transfers that proportion of cash into your wallet. Sign-up takes under 2 minutes and requires only your gas account number.

Both images in the article linked to energyn.app with the source tag "Pushakharinkhabar", suggesting an in-app push went out alongside it (inferred). The page showed 239k reads and 29.7k interactions. vista.ir then reposted it verbatim, opening with the same "ad /".

At that point, the energyn.app domain had been registered for less than four weeks (registered 2026-08-29).

What it is

The homepage's first line: "در مصرف گاز صرفه‌جویی کنید، معادلش را پول نقد بگیرید" ("Save on gas, and take the equivalent in cash"). Three steps:

  1. Log in with your phone number and enter your gas account number;
  2. Use less. Every week it reminds you to submit a meter reading, and an AI assistant teaches you how to save;
  3. For every cubic meter saved, you get a reward, stored in your wallet. You can only withdraw after your meter reading is verified as yours.

There are also point tasks, usage charts, and energy-saving tutorials. The homepage repeatedly stresses "completely free" and "no hardware installation needed." The FAQ states the baseline: "هر چقدر کمتر از دوره مشابه سال قبل مصرف کنید" (the less you use compared with the same period last year, the bigger the reward). It is a web app plus PWA, with a direct-download Android package from the official site. I could not find it on Iran's local app stores, Bazaar or Myket (unverified).

The footer names the developer as Riz Sazegan Takin (ریزسازگان تکین). The company was registered in 2003 (Iranian year 1382), has 10 to 49 staff, and has spent over 20 years building remote monitoring systems for the gas industry. Its website claims it built "Iran's first monitoring system for the gas industry."

Two details stand out. First, Germany alone placed it in the top 100k band in Chrome's data, and the US, UK, France, Netherlands, Canada, and Australia each put it in the top 500k. Yet it is a Persian-language site serving Iranian households. Many Iranian users run VPNs that exit in Germany or the Netherlands, so this "overseas traffic" is most likely Iranian users (inferred). Second, the two-year-old rival Mahaan's site, mahaaneco.ir, has hovered around global #800k, and another player, Nabz Energy, sits near #806k. Energyn passed both in two months. Mahaan relies mainly on its app, though, so its website ranking understates it.

Why now: "Save gas, get cash" is this autumn's policy buzzword in Iran

Iran runs short of gas every winter, and this year (Iranian year 1405) it has become a national topic. The government is pushing a gas-operator system called "Karvar" (کارور). Private companies help users cut gas use. Verified savings earn "gas-saving certificates" that can be sold on the energy exchange or bought back by the national gas company. The scheme has expanded from 7 province to nationwide, with operators growing from 77 to 88 (IRNA).

On 28 Oct, the deputy chair of the parliamentary energy committee, Farhad Shahraki, wrote to the president recommending that households be given "monthly pre-authorized credit and cash for actual savings" (reported by Tasnim, Fardanews, and Tabnak). Energyn's sponsored article uses the same framing, and its timing lands before the heating season: get users to link their account numbers and build baselines first, then pay out when the December peak arrives.

The national gas company runs its own savings rewards, tiered by province at 10% to 35%, paying 13k to 520k tomans credited with the bill (IRNA, Shana). But the amounts are small, payouts are slow, and almost no one knows about them. Energyn packages this into a product that pays out cash, can be withdrawn, and reminds you every week.

Where users come from: sponsored articles, local news accounts, and a "50M" hook

Every tactic I could trace involves paying for reach. There is no sign of organic growth from word of mouth:

  • Native ads on news aggregators: the article at the top, with 239k reads, reposted by vista.ir.
  • A network of local news accounts: goodehnews.ir's Instagram post "🚨 پاداش ۵۰ میلیون تومانی با صرفه جویی در مصرف گاز" (50M toman reward for saving gas) tells readers to enter their account number on the site, following the screenshots in 1. Another Instagram post calls it a "cooperation with the national gas company" offering up to 50M in cash. A local news channel on Eitaa (a domestic Iranian messaging app) in Fereydunshahr, Isfahan province, posted a step-by-step registration video in mid-October. These local accounts appear in batches and look a lot like paid soft ads.
  • Official Instagram @energyn.app: posts are low-barrier tutorials, for example an October 13 post showing how to find your account number in the gas bill text message.
  • The hook: "up to 50M tomans" is nearly a hundred times the 520k-toman official cap. Whether the "cooperation with the national gas company" claim is true is unverified; I found no public documentation.

Every entry point lands on the web page. You can register in two minutes without installing an app from a store. That is also why its web ranking climbed so visibly.

One more thing to note: on 28 Sep, roughly 3 days after the sponsored article ran, the Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari provincial gas company publicly denied a batch of text messages with links promising "registration gas-saving rewards" as fake (Khabaronline). The denial named no product, so it cannot be pinned on Energyn. But it shows how close this kind of play is to looking like a scam.

Where the money comes from (inferred)

The site says it is completely free and charges users nothing. So the cash paid out has to come from the gas saved itself:

  • Article 46 of Iran's Seventh Five-Year Development Plan and the Karvar regulations allow private operators to convert verified savings into certificates and sell them (parliamentary legislation database, ILNA, Shana).
  • The pioneer Mahaan has publicly described its model: users submit readings, the company verifies them, sells the certificates, and passes a share to users. It has already earned 5M cubic meters of savings certificates. Its CEO has complained that certificate approvals are slow and payback periods long (ILNA, 10-01). He also said the hardest part is exchanging data with the gas companies.
  • Energyn's rules look almost designed around certificate verification requirements: compare with the same period last year, measure in cubic meters, and verify meter ownership before any withdrawal. Its developer, Takin, is an old supplier that spent 20 years building monitoring systems for gas companies, so getting access to account-number data is far easier for it than for outsiders.

So its revenue most likely comes from the spread between the certificate price and the cash it pays users. I could not verify whether Energyn holds Karvar operator accreditation (unverified).

Energyn is a late entrant, not the first mover. What it beats Mahaan on is low friction (web, weekly, no photos), plus a willingness to spend on ads.

Open questions

  • When the December heating season really starts paying out, will withdrawals arrive? The "this month's rewards 420k tomans / saved 42 cubic meters" figure on the homepage is an illustration, not real data. If withdrawals fail, a hook like "50M" will quickly get it labeled a scam, and word of mouth will turn against it.
  • No public documents exist for its partnership with the national gas company or its Karvar accreditation.
  • Outside Iran nobody knows about it. There is no discussion in Chinese or English media or on X, and nothing on Product Hunt. Inside Iran, the coverage is paid sponsored content with no independent reporting.

If it were you

C: worth learning from, but don't copy it. It works because of three things followers can't get: this season's gas policy in Iran, the certificate accreditation that turns saved gas into cash, and a data channel into account numbers via a gas-industry vendor of 20 years. The product itself (count the readings, compute the difference, pay out) is something anyone can build, but an outsider in Iran can get neither the data nor the certificates. And Mahaan has been at it for two years while Energyn spends heavily on ads.

Who it suits: teams already working in energy, utilities, or the grid side, with access to metering data and a country that has a mechanism for turning saved energy into money. Examples include Italy's white certificates, France's CEE energy-saving certificates, the UK's ECO scheme, and US state demand-response programs.

Who it doesn't suit: indie developers with no local policy accreditation or metering data who can only write code, or foreign teams aiming at the Iranian market (sanctions, payments, and data all block the way).

How to build it: The structure to take away is this: take an obscure B2G energy-saving certificate or subsidy and package it as a consumer "save X, get cash" product. The money comes from the certificate buyer or the grid, so users pay nothing. Design the rules around the certificate's verification requirements (compare against the same period last year, measure by usage, confirm meter ownership before any withdrawal), and launch before peak-usage season so users can build a baseline first.

How to acquire users: in markets where app-store distribution is limited or users hate installing apps, buy native ads on news aggregators, add a round of local-account sponsored posts, make the landing page a web page, and let people register in two minutes without going through an app store. The hook can be bold, but it must withstand the "looks like a scam" charge, so put the official partnership and withdrawal records front and center.

When to get in early: this kind of product follows the seasons. In the Northern Hemisphere the heating-season window runs from 9 to October for launch. Miss it, and you wait for the summer peak-demand response instead.

What would mean you read it wrong: (1) If from 2026 December to 2027 January Energyn's withdrawals reach users at scale and real users post payout screenshots while its ranking keeps climbing, the model has proven itself in Iran and is worth watching for copycats in other countries. (2) Conversely, if batches of "can't withdraw" complaints or a provincial gas company naming it in a denial show up around January, it looks more like a one-off ad harvest, and even the "learn from it" value drops. (3) If a home-focused web product that pays cash for measured savings appears and gains traction in Europe or the US, the structure can travel, and you should reassess.

One line

A Persian-language web app (PWA, plus a direct-download Android APK) that pays you cash for saving gas. Users log in with a phone number, link their gas account number, and submit meter readings once a week. Usage below the same period last year earns cash credited to a wallet; withdrawals unlock after the meter ownership is verified. No hardware needed. It also has an AI energy assistant, point tasks and energy-saving guides. The site footer reads "محصولی از شرکت ریزسازگان تکین", so the publisher is Riz Sazegan Takin (ریزسازگان تکین, takin.co).

Verdict

It took off on three things stacked together, not on the product itself being new:

  1. Timing: Iran's gas shortage (ناترازی) this 1405 winter is a national topic. The government is pushing the Karvar gas operator system (کارور گاز), where private firms help households save gas in exchange for tradable saving certificates. MPs are also publicly calling for monthly cash payouts to households that save.
  2. Paid reach: native sponsored posts on akharinkhabar, Iran's largest news aggregator (tagged ad/, 239k reads), reposted on vista.ir. Local-news Instagram accounts and Eitaa city channels then ran the same hook: "up to 50M toman in cash."
  3. Web first: ads send users straight to a web sign-up, with no app store download, so all traffic lands on the energyn.app domain. That's why its ranking climbed so fast.

The publisher, Takin, is an established company that has spent 20 years building remote monitoring (SCADA/IIoT) for the gas industry and has won the Khwarizmi Award. This industry ties is probably how it gets access to users' historical gas usage data and how it takes part in monetizing energy-saving certificates (my inference, not verified).

1. Growth data (our traffic database, checked 2026-11-07)

  • Domain registered on 2026-08-29 (RDAP, rdap.org), barely two months ago.
  • CrUX: in its first full month online (2026-09) it went straight into the global top 100k. Germany top 100k; US, UK, France, Spain, Netherlands, Canada, Australia, Brazil and Turkey top 500k; India and Italy top 1M. No records for August or earlier.
  • Tranco: 2026-10-18 first entered the top 1M. 10-22 is 516,670,10-29 is 326,113,11-05 is 253,852, and still climbing about 10k places a day.
  • Western country buckets don't mean overseas users. Iran isn't among CrUX's 21 countries, since Iranian users commonly use VPNs and their traffic exits mostly in Germany, the Netherlands and similar places. Germany alone reaching the top 100k suggests the traffic comes from Iranian users exiting through VPNs (inferred).
  • Against older rivals: Mahaan (mahaaneco.ir) has been around since 2024, sits in CrUX's global top 500k, and holds about 800k on Tranco; Nabz Energy (nabzenergy.ir) is around 806k. Energyn has been live two months and already has more web traffic than both. But Mahaan relies mainly on its app (130k installs on Bazaar), so web metrics understate it.

Energyn only asks for one number a week, compared to last year, and works on the web.

Bottom line: Mahaan has been doing the same thing for two years. Energyn is a late entrant, not the first mover.

3. Where users come from (growth levers)

  1. News-site native ads (confirmed): akharinkhabar.ir 2026-09-25 (1405/07/03) ran the piece "از امروز با صرفه‌جویی در مصرف گاز پاداش نقدی بگیر" ("Get cash rewards for saving gas from today"). The opening line is tagged "ad/", with 239k reads and 29.7k interactions. vista.ir reposted the same article (also opening with "ad /"). akharinkhabar is one of Iran's highest-traffic news aggregators, and the buy landed 4 weeks after domain registration, in the same month CrUX first put the site in the top 100k.
  2. Local news Instagram / Eitaa channels (confirmed): goodehnews.ir's Instagram post "🚨 ۵۰ million toman bonus for saving on gas" tells users to enter their account number from the bill "1" into the site. Another Instagram post says "Energyn, launched with the National Gas Company, up to 50M cash." In late July 1405, the Fereydunshahr Eitaa local news channel in Isfahan posted a step-by-step Energyn tutorial video. Batch posting across local accounts like this looks like a paid ad network.
  3. Official Instagram @energyn.app (confirmed): posts tutorials such as 2026-10-13 showing users how to find their account number in the gas bill SMS, lowering the sign-up barrier.
  4. The "50M toman" hook plus "national gas company partnership" endorsement (the claims are confirmed to exist; whether they're true is unverified): the top amount far exceeds the official reward (up to 520k toman). It's a classic hook.
  5. Unverified SMS blast: On 2026-09-28, the gas company of Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari province denied sending fake texts with a link, titled "Register for the gas company's energy-saving rewards program." The denial came 3 days after Energyn launched, but it named no product. It could be Energyn or a similar app running SMS acquisition, or phishing scammers riding the news. Don't pin it on Energyn.
  6. Policy news tailwind (confirmed): 2026-10-28 Farhad Shahraki, deputy chair of the parliamentary energy committee, wrote to the president proposing monthly prepaid credit, with cash paid out for actual savings (Tasnim/Fardanews/Tabnak). Stories like this push "save energy, get cash" into trending topics, and Energyn's ad copy uses the same wording.
  7. I found no discussion of it on TikTok, X, Reddit, or English-language media (x-radar search for energyn returned 0 relevant results). TikTok is blocked inside Iran, so that channel wasn't available to them anyway.

4. Where the money comes from (inference)

  • Iran's Seventh Five-Year Development Plan, Article 46, and the energy-saving certificate market allow private "Karvar" companies to obtain verified gas-saving certificates, which are then traded on the energy exchange or bought back by the national gas company (Karvar regulations on rc.majlis.ir, ILNA, Shana).
  • Mahaan's public model is: users report their numbers → the company does M&V verification → certificates are monetized → part of the proceeds goes to users. They also complain that certificate issuance is slow and payback takes a long time (ILNA 2026-10-01).
  • Energyn's design almost mirrors these rules: comparison against the same period last year, rewards per cubic meter, and meter ownership must be verified before withdrawal. So its revenue most likely comes from the spread on savings certificates, not from charging users (the website stresses "completely free"). I could not find public records of whether Energyn holds Karvar accreditation or really partners with the national gas company. Unverified.
  • Takin is a longtime gas-industry supplier (its website says it built "Iran's first gas industry monitoring system"; registered in 1382, 10–49 staff; per rasmio and irantalent), so it likely has the ability to connect with provincial gas companies' customer-number data. In ILNA's reporting, Mahaan's CEO said data exchange was the biggest hurdle, which is exactly where an incumbent supplier like Takin would have an edge (inference).

V. Why it took off

  • Timing: Winter gas shortages plus the Karvar system expanding from 7 provinces to nationwide made "get paid for saving gas" a buzzword in Iran in autumn 2026. Launching in September, before heating season, let users bind their account numbers and build a baseline first.
  • Distribution: native ads on news sites (239k reads per article) plus a network of local accounts, with the hook "50M". Everything led to web sign-up, with no app-store step to lose users.
  • Resources: The team behind it are longtime gas-industry suppliers, so they likely have access to customer-number data interfaces and certificate monetization channels (inference).
  • Low product friction: Numbers are reported weekly, while Mahaan requires daily photos. It works on web and PWA, so there's no need to install an app from Bazaar. No hardware.

VI. Differentiation

  • Compared with Mahaan: web first, weekly reporting, year-over-year comparison, emphasis on pure cash, no photos or hardware; it also bundles an AI assistant and energy-saving tutorials.
  • These differences lower the barriers to sign-up and retention, and they let ad clicks convert directly. But the main driver is paid acquisition plus the policy window; differentiation just makes the spending work better. The web-first approach also explains why it looks far more prominent in our site-ranking data than Mahaan, which is mainly app-based.
  • The moat is in data and certificate accreditation, not features.

VII. What to take away

  • "Government subsidy or certificate-style incentive" plus "consumer cash rebate": repackage the obscure B2G energy-saving certificate mechanism as a consumer-facing "save X, get paid" offer. The certificate buyer pays, users pay nothing. Works anywhere with white certificates, energy efficiency obligations, or demand-response schemes (Italy, France's CEE, the UK's ECO, US state-level DR programs), but you need local policy knowledge and data access.
  • Launch before heating season, bind account numbers and build a baseline first, then pay out during the peak.
  • Native ads on news aggregators plus a network of local accounts, landing on the web instead of an app store. This works especially well in markets where app-store distribution is restricted (Iran, Russia, etc.).

8. Visibility

  • Almost no one knows about it yet: It's only advertised in the Persian-speaking market in Iran. Chinese- and English-language media, X, Product Hunt, and HN haven't mentioned it. Revenue is not public.
  • Inside Iran, it is widely advertised on mainstream news sites, but no independent media have covered it.

IX. Copycats

  • I found no clear product copying Energyn. Scam texts exploiting the "gas-saving reward" buzz appeared at the same time (the provincial gas company denied 2026-09-28 of them), but there is no evidence linking them to Energyn.

10. Uncertainties

  • Whether Energyn has Karvar accreditation, whether its cooperation with the national gas company is real, where the reward money comes from, and whether it can be sustained.
  • Actual withdrawal volume: the homepage's "this month's rewards 420,000 toman / 42 m³" is only a mockup.
  • The Android APK is only available as a direct download from the website (about 5 MB). I found no listing on Bazaar or Myket (unverified).
  • Whether it or its agency is behind the fake texts.
  • Whether it can pay out once heating season starts in December. If withdrawals fail, it will be easy to label as a scam, and its reputation could flip quickly.
