# One person, one town at a time: French small-town friendship site Entre Potes tripled traffic with 40k local pages

**What it is** A free French-language friendship site and app where users join or start local offline meetups like hikes, drinks, and sports. It stresses it's not a dating app.

**Why it took off** It launches one mid-sized city at a time, kickstarting each with local newspapers and an official monthly get-together. Starting 2026, it generated pages for every municipality in France, Belgium, Switzerland, and Canada, showing real member counts. With a September redesign, search traffic clearly rose from October (the causation is inferred).

**B** **How you could follow it** Don't copy the product, copy the playbook: in a mid-sized-language country with no free web player yet, first build offline density in your own city, then open new cities one by one, each with one local media piece plus an official meetup, and batch-generate city pages from real data to capture long-tail search.

B grade: the playbook is clear, cheap, and barely covered, and could transfer to other countries. But the business is thin (sponsorships plus ads), you have to run offline events yourself and slowly build density per city, and France already has a dozen-plus competitors, including Frimake, which raised €10M. Chatter in niche circles

Global rank 245k · 90 days ago 774k

In 2020, a Grenoble resident broke up, realized he had no friends nearby, and started a Facebook group. Six years later it's a free "make friends + go out together" site with 319k members across the French-speaking world, whose global rank climbed from 780k to 245k in a single month. It has raised no funding, and the features aren't new. Its approach: target mid-sized cities the big players ignore, run a local newspaper feature and an official get-together for each new city, then generate a page for every municipality in France, Belgium, Switzerland, and Canada and let search engines send people in. Below: how it got started, who's competing with it, and whether this playbook travels to other countries.

### Fifty people in a park

Raphaël Rezvanpour wrote in the "Our Story" section of the site: in 2020 summer, just after lockdown and a breakup, "the friends I had in school had all left the city, and after years of heads-down work my social circle had nearly vanished." He tried a few existing friend-finding apps and found them "old and inactive." He works in communications, so he built a Facebook group for people in Grenoble. In 2020 August 7, he organized the first meetup in a park, with around fifty people showing up.

That's Entre Potes (French for "between buddies"). In 2023 it became a web platform, and the local paper Le Dauphiné covered it once; the Android app launched in February 2024, and iOS in July 2024. It's run by his one-person company, Happy Tribe, and the footer says "Made in Grenoble."

The use is simple: at sign-up you pick an age range (18–39 or 40+), and the homepage shows meetups others have posted, like hikes, a drink, karaoke, running, or board games. Tap "join" to attend, or start your own, create a group, or message people privately. It repeatedly stresses two things: it's free, and it's not a dating site ("gratuit et sans drague").

### How it opened up one city at a time

The route went: Grenoble (2020) → Saint-Étienne (2024-11) → Le Puy (2025-01) → Lyon, Marseille, Paris (2025-06) → Luxembourg, Tulle, Nîmes, Roanne, Drôme–Ardèche → in 2026 October it "officially entered Canada" (Google Play release notes).

For each city, three moves:

- Post "good news for residents of X" on the Facebook page;

- Get a local newspaper or radio station to run a piece. Le Dauphiné, Le Progrès, L'Éveil, Le Pays, ici (formerly France Bleu), NRJ… The site's press page lists 9 outlets, and not one is a national tech publication;

- Run an official monthly "apéro-rencontres" (meet-up drinks), handing out icebreaker game cards on site. A new city's biggest risk is nobody posting events, so the team starts one itself to solve the cold start.

In 2025 October the founder told L'Éveil that **mid-sized cities work better** : they have clubs, but few online tools. Today the Roanne page (population about 34k) reads "25 members within 2,944 km, 30 new in the last 68 days, 35 upcoming events, 41 public groups." At the top is the official drinks meetup at 14 Nov, 7 pm, with member-posted events below it: a raclette dinner, pub karaoke, and a night run.

In 2026 March 26, it also shut down its other brand, ViensOnSort, which started in Poitiers, and moved those users over. Inference: the sub-brand was for testing new cities, and got merged once the test was done.

### Why it suddenly jumped in 2026 October

The numbers first (website rankings are global ranks, where lower is better):

| Timeline | What happened | Rank / traffic |
|---|---|---|
| 2026-04 | First "make friends in X" municipality pages appear (Wayback archive) | Tranco about 770k |
| 2026-08 | — | Chrome real-user data: France rises from the top 10k tier to the top 5 thousand |
| 2026-09 | Sep 20 full site frontend swap | Chrome real users: global rise from the top 500k tier to the top 100k |
| 2026-10-08 | — | Tranco still hovering around 780k |
| 2026-10-22 | — | 398k people |
| 2026-11-05 | — | 245k, 30 days ×3.2 |

The most likely cause is those programmatic pages. Its sitemap now has **11,094 "make friends in X" municipality pages and 33,282 city pages** , including tiny places like Barby in France and Abbotsford in Canada. There are also 4,172 public event pages and 3,623 group pages. Each page is more than an empty shell: it shows that town's current member count, new sign-ups, upcoming events, and groups, plus long localized copy. The Roanne page mentions the Michelin and Safran factories, the IUT, and Lake Villerest. Anyone searching "friendly meetup + town name" or "things to do in [town]" lands there.

The blog also chases long-tail traffic: a post on "how to make friends at 25/35/40/45" for each age group, plus one titled "The best friend-finding apps of 2026" that ranks itself first and benchmarks against OnVaSortir's about €39/month and Knockk's €12.99/month.

About 5 months of page rollout and roughly 3 weeks after the new site went live, rankings climbed sharply, and the timing lines up. Chrome real-user tiers 8 rose first in September, suggesting people really did increase. But this is **inference** : the same month it also entered Canada and installed ad-tracking pixels, and outsiders can't separate how much each contributed. Chrome's real-user data for October only came out in December.

Membership is growing too: 2025 added 115k, 2026 started with 200k total, and the site now says 319k (Facebook posts, site homepage). Google Play shows 107k installs, +7 in the last 1,946 days, about 280 a day, ranked #20 in France's Social free chart (11-07). The French iOS store has only 137 ratings. **Its home is the web, not the app** : when replying to a negative Play review, the team even says "if your device still has problems, try the web version."

### Where the money comes from

Hardly any revenue. All features are free, with optional voluntary sponsorship starting at €1.99/month. Play lists it as "contains ads, contains in-app purchases," priced at $1.99–179.99. The sitemap also has 621 business pages (bars, venues), which may point to a business-facing offering, **unverified** . No revenue has been disclosed, and no funding raised.

So this is a business of "gather people first." For a one-person company, it's unclear from the outside whether sponsorships plus ads can sustain it. What is clear is that being free is its weapon against paid rivals.

### Who it's competing with

France's "make friends" niche is crowded, at least a dozen players:

| Product | Form | Scale | Compared with Entre Potes |
|---|---|---|---|
| OnVaSortir | Web, 2005 years | historically 650k members, ~49k worldwide | charges new users since 2019, skews 40+ and big-city |
| Toutes Mes Sorties | Web, 2020 years | claims 300k+ members, ~87k worldwide | free, web traffic bigger than it, but no offline ops, weak app |
| Frimake | App, 2019, Toulouse | 820k members, 448k Play installs; 2025-11 raised €10M | also free, app-first, targets young workers in big cities; web traffic an order of magnitude smaller |
| Knockk | App, 2020 | Play 467k installs | free tier capped at 1 events a month, membership €12.99/month |
| Timeleft / Meet5 | App | Play 1.23M / 3.29M installs | paid stranger dinners / 6-person groups, mostly Germany; different format |
| Meetup | Web + app | big globally, very weak in France | organizers pay, skews business networking and expats |

It isn't the first, nor the biggest. Its position: cheaper than OnVaSortir (free), more down-market than Frimake (small and mid-sized cities), and more offline ops than Toutes Mes Sorties. I found no one openly copying it; newer entrants like Moncrew and formeet look more like the whole category heating up.

### If it were you

**Verdict** : there's nothing in the product worth copying, but the playbook is: "open one city at a time + one local press piece per city + official monthly apéros" drives cold start, and "bulk-generate town pages from real member and event data" drives later growth. It's already crowded in France, but many mid-sized-language countries haven't seen it done.

**Who it suits** : someone living in a non-English country, fluent in the local language, willing to run offline meetups themselves; developers who can do programmatic SEO have the edge.

**Who it doesn't suit** : people who want quick money. The business is thin (sponsorships + ads), and Entre Potes took six years to go from a Facebook group to where it is today. It's also not for people unwilling to go out and organize gatherings.

**How to do it** : pick a country with mid-sized cities and no free web players (inferred: Italy, Spain, Poland, Portugal are worth checking first; Germany has Meet5, study it closely); first run 5–10 offline meetups in your own city via Facebook / WhatsApp groups, until you have a few hundred real members; only then build the web version, and every city page needs real numbers. Don't spread pages to cities without data first; empty pages don't get indexed.

**How to get users** : for each new city, pitch local newspapers a story like "locals launch a free friend-making platform" (local papers lack this kind of news); run one official apéro a month; write blog posts like "how to make friends at X" and "free alternatives to paid platform Y".

**When to move** : there's no hard window, but the sooner you claim a country's long-tail search, the better; once a rival raises money (like Frimake), they start buying traffic, so within six months get one city dense first.

**What would show I'm wrong** : if the October Chrome real-user data for Entre Potes in mid-December doesn't step up, the ranking jump was mostly the Canada launch or a change in counting, not SEO, and the "pages alone bring traffic" half should be discounted. Or if, within three months of your first city, member-organized events can't sustain one event a week, that city isn't dense enough; don't rush to a second.

Where users come from

- **Verified** **city-by-city launches + local media** : Grenoble → Saint-Étienne 2024-11 → Le Puy 2025-01 → Lyon/Marseille/Paris 2025-06 → Canada 2026-10; each city has an FB post "Grande nouvelle pour les habitants de X", covered by 9 local outlets including Le Dauphiné, L'Éveil, Le Pays, ici, NRJ

- **Verified** **official offline meetups for cold start** : each city gets one apéro-rencontres a month with icebreaker game cards (L'Éveil 2025-10-14; the Roanne landing page lists 2026-11-14 official meetups)

- **Verified** **programmatic SEO** : sitemap has 11,094 /rencontre-amicale/ pages and 33,282 /ville/ town pages, plus 4,172 public event pages and 3,623 group pages, showing live member and event counts; Wayback shows it live from 2026-04, new frontend in 2026-09; Tranco jumped sharply from 2026-10 (causation is inferred)

- **Verified** **brand-merge migration** : viensonsort.org: 2026-03-26 shut down, redirects to Entre Potes

- **Verified** **blog / competitor-comparison SEO** : long-form age-based "how to make friends" posts, plus "best 2026 dating apps" comparisons that rank itself first and set its prices against OVS/Knockk

- Inferred **Meta ads / retargeting** : nothing in our metaads library; the new site loads boot-pixel.js

## Entre Potes (entrepotes.org): why it works

> Research date 2026-11-07. Data from our traffic / googleplay / appstore / metaads libraries, the official site, Wayback archives and French local press. Anything inferred is marked as such.

### One line

Entre Potes is a French-language "make friends and go out together" platform (web + app, free) that one person built in Grenoble. In 2020 it was just a Facebook group; it then opened one city at a time, mainly targeting **mid-sized cities** in southeastern France: each new city got offline "apéro-rencontres" (meet-up drinks) and a story in the local paper. In 2026 it began bulk-generating landing pages for every town in France, Belgium, Switzerland and Canada (programmatic SEO). The web traffic jump in 2026 October is most likely those pages getting indexed. Its traffic is mainly **on the web** , not the app.

### 1. What it is

- Operated by Happy Tribe (SIREN 827959115). Founder Raphaël Rezvanpour, 34 years old, lives in Grenoble, comes from a communications background. The site footer says "Made in Grenoble".

- Origin: after lockdown lifted in summer 2020, he had just broken up and had no friends nearby, so he created a Grenoble-local Facebook group. In 2020-08-07 he held the first meetup in a park, with about 50 people (official site /about/history). In 2023 it became a web platform (reported by Le Dauphiné in 2023-07-27); the Android app launched in 2024-02-17, iOS in 2024-07-04 (googleplay library; iTunes lookup).

- How it works: at sign-up you pick an age group (18–39 / 40+). The home page shows outings others have organized and member profiles; you can join, organize, create groups, run polls, and private message (L'Éveil 2025-10-14).

- How it makes money: core features are free, with optional sponsorship from €1.99/month (per the official blog). The Play listing says "contains ads, contains in-app purchases", with in-app prices of $1.99–$179.99 (googleplay library). The sitemap also has 621 business pages (/establishment/, in sitemap-pros.xml), possibly a B2B push toward bars and venues, **unverified** .

- Covers France, Belgium, Switzerland, Luxembourg. The 2026-10 release notes say "officially launched in Canada" (Play recent_changes).

### 2. Growth data

| Metric | Value | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Member count | 2025 new in 115k, 2026 year-to-date 200k, 2026-11 official site lists 319k | FB / IG posts; official homepage |
| Tranco global rank | 2026-07-30 ~ 10-08 hovered around 780k → 10-15 594k → 10-22 398k → 11-05 245k | traffic library, rank_day |
| CrUX France tier | 2026-05 ~ 07 before 10k → from 2026-08 top 5k | traffic library, crux_domain |
| CrUX global tier | 2026-05 ~ 08 ago 500k → 2026-09 ago 100k; Spain charted from 2026-08, top 1M | Same as above |
| Google Play | 106,906 installs, 7 days +1,946 (about 280/day); #20 on France's social Top Free, #75 in Canada | googleplay library, 2026-11-07 |
| iOS | Only 137 ratings in France; France's social Top Free ranks 52–72; Belgium has 6 ratings | appstore library / iTunes lookup |
| Similarweb | 2026-09 global rank about #94,732 | similarweb.com search snippet |

**Most of the traffic is on the web** : on CrUX it sits in the top 5K in France, on par with OnVaSortir (top 5K in fr) and an order of magnitude above Frimake's site (frimake.com is only top 50K in fr). But Frimake's Android installs are 448K, with a claimed 820K members, more than 4 times the Entre Potes App. So Entre Potes users mostly use the web version, like the older sites OVS and TMS, unlike pure-app players such as Frimake and Knockk. Its iOS rating count is only 137, which further confirms the app is not the main channel.

### 3. Competitors (who does the same thing)

| Product | Form | Launched | Scale | How Entre Potes differs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| OnVaSortir (OVS) | Web (city-by-city subdomains) | ~2005 | Historically 650k members; Tranco ~49k; CrUX fr top 5k | Started charging new users in 2019 (about €39/month), users mostly 40+ and concentrated in big cities; 2026-10 launched a new app, iivvii (4–6 people coffee meetups) |
| Toutes Mes Sorties (TMS) | Web | 2020 | Claims 300k+ members; Tranco ~87k; CrUX fr top 1k | "The free OVS": its web traffic is bigger than Entre Potes'; focuses on finding people things to do offline, weak app |
| Frimake | iOS / Android | 2019, Toulouse | 820k members; 448k Play installs; 2025-11 raised €10M | Also free, but takes the funded route, app first, targets young professionals in big cities; web traffic an order of magnitude smaller |
| Knockk | iOS / Android | 2020 | claims 500k members; 467k Play installs | Free tier limited to 1 events per month; Premium €12.99/month |
| Leizup | iOS / Android / web | post-pandemic (Play package re-listed 2026-04) | 80k Play installs; CrUX fr top 50k | Emphasizes spontaneous get-togethers, France only |
| Timeleft | iOS / Android | 2022 | Play 1.23M installs | Paid strangers' Wednesday dinners, algorithmic table matching, completely different format |
| Meet5 | iOS / Android | 2019, Germany | Play 3.29M installs | 6-person small groups, mostly Germany |
| Meetup | Web / App | 2002 | 22.4M Play installs; on CrUX in France only reaches top 50k | Organizers pay, leans toward networking and expats, very weak in France |
| Bumble For Friends | App | 2023 | 2.35M Play installs, rating 2.63 | One-on-one matching for friendship, not group activities |
| Weezem / YepnGo / Atypikoo / Si On Sortait | Web or app | 2010s–2020s | All small scale (CrUX fr top 50k to top 1M) | Respectively aimed at 40+ crowds, free small communities, atypical groups (highly sensitive, neurodivergent, etc.), and web-only |
| ViensOnSort | Web / App | 2025 (started in Poitiers) | Unknown | **A sister brand under the same company** (official copy says "2020 was born in Grenoble", launch announced on the entrepotes.org Facebook page); 2026-03-26 shut down, users redirected to Entre Potes |

Verdict: crowded field. France's "rencontres amicales" (friendship meetups) category has at least 10 players, and Frimake just raised €10M. Entre Potes is neither the first nor the biggest.

### 4. Where users come from (growth tactics)

1. **City-by-city launches + local media** (confirmed). Route: Grenoble (2020) → Saint-Étienne (2024-11) → Le Puy (2025-01) → Lyon, Marseille, Paris (2025-06) → Luxembourg, Tarbes, Nîmes / Alès, Roanne, Drôme-Ardèche → Canada (2026-10). Each city launch gets a Facebook post, "Grande nouvelle pour les habitants de X" (big news for X's residents). Local papers covered almost every launch: Le Dauphiné, Le Progrès, L'Éveil, Le Pays, Le Réveil du Midi, ici (formerly France Bleu), NRJ, L'Est Éclair, Le Peuple Libre; the official site's "Dans la presse" section lists 9 outlets in total. The founder says **medium-sized cities work better** : they have clubs but few online tools (L'Éveil 2025-10-14).

2. **Official offline meetups warm up new cities** (confirmed). Each city holds one official monthly apéro-rencontre, with icebreaker game cards handed out on the spot, solving the cold-start problem of new cities where nobody posts events (L'Éveil 2025-10-14; the Roanne landing page shows 2026-11-14 official apéros).

3. **Programmatic SEO** (confirmed these pages exist; their causal link to the traffic jump is inferred).
    - Wayback shows: 2026-04-10 first saw /rencontre-amicale/<city> pages ("make friends in X: free, not dating") and /blog; from 2026-06 a large number of public event pages /sortie/ were archived (6–July 913 pages); 2026-09-20 the whole site got a new front end (new asset directory, boot-pixel.js).
    - The sitemap now contains: **11,094 /rencontre-amicale/ town pages + 33,282 /ville/ pages** (small towns across France, Switzerland and Canada, e.g. Barby, Abbotsford), plus 4,172 public event pages, 3,623 group pages and 621 business pages.
    - Pages show live data, such as "2,944 members around Roanne, 30 new in the last 68 days, 35 upcoming events, 41 public groups", plus local attractions, bar recommendations and long localized copy.
    - The blog targets long-tail age-based queries like "comment se faire des amis à 25/35/40/45 ans" (how to make friends at 25/35/40/45), and publishes a competitor roundup, "Les meilleures applications pour se faire des amis en 2026", that ranks itself first.
    - Tranco climbs steeply starting 10-08, roughly 3 weeks after the new site went live, consistent with Tranco lagging real traffic by 1–2 weeks. CrUX France moved up in August and globally in September, showing real users really increased.

4. **Brand consolidation** (confirmed). 2026-03-26 shut down its sister brand ViensOnSort, and all users were redirected to Entre Potes.

5. **Existing users and word of mouth** (present, strength unknown). The founder personally asks users on IG to rate the app in stores ("nous en manquons", we're short on ratings), and comments show people asking for more locations (e.g. "Rien en Normandie", nothing in Normandy yet).

6. **Paid ads** (unverified). Our Meta ad library didn't track it (not finding it doesn't mean they didn't buy). The new site loads boot-pixel.js, meaning at least an ad or retargeting pixel is installed.

7. X / HN / Reddit / TikTok: x-radar found "entrepotes" 90 times in the last 0 days; no official TikTok account found. Social channels rely mainly on the Facebook page and Instagram (@entrepotesorg).

### 5. Why it took off

- **Targets groups and places big players overlook** . Frimake and Knockk fight for young people in Paris and Lyon; OVS charges and skews older. Entre Potes started in medium cities like Grenoble, Saint-Étienne, Le Puy and Roanne, where there's demand but no one serving it. Opening a city costs one local press write-up plus a monthly apéro.

- **Free, catching users who left OVS's paywall** . Its own comparison pieces benchmark against OVS's €39/month and Knockk's €12.99.

- **Web first** . The website is a complete product on its own, plus tens of thousands of town pages, so searches like "rencontre amicale + town name" or "que faire à + town name" (what to do in a given town) land on it. This is the direct reason its web traffic beats Frimake, which raised funding.

- **Trigger for the traffic jump** : programmatic SEO rolled out from 2026-04, plus the site-wide redesign on 2026-09, plus the merge of 2026-03 into ViensOnSort. Three things stacked, and from 2026-10 Tranco rose 3x (the timing lines up, the causality is inferred).

### 6. Differentiation

The product features aren't unique: creating events, joining, group chat, Frimake, Leizup and TMS all have them. The real difference is in the **playbook** :

- Geography: medium cities and rural areas first, opened one city at a time, each with an official offline meetup;

- Format: web first, SEO first, with tens of thousands of local pages showing real member and event counts;

- Pricing: fully free plus voluntary donations, and that becomes a selling point in the SEO copy.

These differences in playbook **are** why it works. Especially the SEO + web approach: Frimake, also free, takes the app and funding route, yet its web traffic is an order of magnitude smaller.

### 7. How visible it is

It's mostly spread by word of mouth in small circles. Only French regional media have covered it (Le Dauphiné, L'Éveil, ici, etc.); there's no national tech press, nobody discusses it on X, and it has never disclosed revenue or funding, nor does it show up on TrustMRR. Compared with Frimake, which just raised funding and got coverage in Le Parisien and France 3, it's barely known.

### 8. Copycats

No clear copycat found. New entrants keep arriving in the same category: on iOS, Moncrew, formeet and (P)OSE; UnCafé is writing "OVS / Frimake alternative" SEO pieces and names Entre Potes; OVS launched the new app iivvii. This looks more like the whole category heating up than anyone targeting it.

### 9. What others can learn

- A local social, O2O product can copy "one city at a time + local media per city + a monthly official offline meetup": cold-start costs are low, and it can be replicated in any smaller-language country.

- Use UGC live data (member counts, upcoming events, groups) to batch-generate landing pages for every town. Tens of thousands of pages can steadily capture long-tail search. Especially effective for web-first community products.

- Write comparison pieces using competitors' prices (OVS paid, Knockk subscription), and make "free" the selling point to grab "alternative" keywords.

- The same company tests new cities through a sister brand first, then merges back into the main brand after testing (ViensOnSort → Entre Potes).

### 10. Still unclear

- How much of 2026-10's Tranco jump comes from SEO indexing, and how much from the Canada launch, CDN or DNS changes that shift Tranco's counting, ads, or the ViensOnSort migration? CrUX October data won't be out until mid-December, and that will be the time to verify.

- How many of the 319k members are active? The ViensOnSort shutdown page says Entre Potes has "150k members", which doesn't match the website's 200k (2026 early) or 319k (now); it may be outdated copy.

- Revenue, donation conversion rates, and whether business pages are paid are all unknown; whether they run Meta ads is unverified too.

- iOS installs aren't visible; Play is just over 100k, and there's no direct data on how users split between web and app.
