690k photos a day: Brazil's Fotop sells you, not just selfies, by positioning as the "official photographer". The hard part is the relationships, not the AI
What it is Event photographers shoot the crowd, you find your photos online with a selfie or bib number, pay to download, and the platform takes about 10%–12% commission.
Why it's taking off It's the official photo partner for Rock in Rio, Maratona do Rio, and São Silvestre. For September's Rock in Rio it sent 300 photographers and shot 690k photos in one day. Add the autumn event season and its rank climbed.
CHow to play it Don't go head-on in Brazil. Pick a city or a narrow scene with no local platform yet (road running, cycling, graduation ceremonies, scenic spots). First trade commission share for exclusives and referral traffic from event organizers, then copy its face-search photo finding, photographer storefronts, and bundled sales.
Global rank 36k · 90 days ago 142k
Fotop, a Brazilian event photo platform that has been around for 20 years and never raised funding, climbed from 90k to 140k in global traffic rankings in 36 days. It's not a new dark horse. The jump most likely came from its official partnership with September's Rock in Rio and the autumn event season. Face recognition for finding photos is something anyone can build. The valuable part is the contract that makes it the "official photos" source for big races and festivals. Below: how it makes money, why it's rising now, who's competing with it, and where you could get in.
Day one of Rock in Rio
On Sep 4, 2026, Rock in Rio opened at Cidade do Rock in Rio de Janeiro. At the gates, under the big sign, beside the Ferris wheel and in front of the main stages, Fotop photographers in their vests stood ready. Others roamed the crowd, shooting the hugs, group photos and outfits between sets. This year Fotop sent 300 photographers and set up 4 studios, nearly 4 times its first visit 2025 years ago (80 photographers, 100 million-plus photos).
By the end of the day, rockinrio.fotop.com had 693,072 photos in that day's gallery. Attendees went home, uploaded a selfie, and the system picked out the photos of them by face. They paid to download. Rock in Rio's official website menu links directly to Fotop.
CEO André Chaco told Gazeta Corporativa the day before opening that this edition expects over 5M photos, with revenue up 500%–600% on last year.
What it is and how it makes money
In one line: photos other people took of you at an event, which you find by face or bib number and then buy.
- Two-sided market: photographers sign up and upload for free, and the platform takes a commission. The official help center says 10%. In an interview with PEGN (2025-01), the founder said the average is about 12%. There is also a plan where photographers pay an upload fee for a lower commission.
- Price per sale: R$15–20 per photo, but the platform pushes bundles. Chaco's words: "These photos are only useful to one person. I have 20 photos of you, and I'd rather you take them all." A São Silvestre New Year's run bundle costs about R$100 for 300 photos.
- Organizer revenue share: For races like Maratona do Rio that Fotop runs as a managed operation, photographers keep only about 45%, and the organizer takes a cut too (PEGN).
- Scale (founder's own account, PEGN 2025-01): 2024 years in, 500M photos uploaded, 150k registered photographers, operating in 10 countries, 2024 growth of 100%, 2025 target of +150%, photo sales at the "several hundred million reais" level. Whether the 2025 target was hit, I couldn't find.
It started small. The two founders sold race photos at the Rally dos Sertões off-road rally in 2000. Early on they were "up all night checking bib numbers one by one and adding watermarks by hand," and from Sunday to Monday dozens of photographers would show up at their office to upload on site, with the internet coming through a microwave-oven antenna at home. The company was formally founded in 2015. The same team had also built the ticketing platform Ticket Sports, which they sold to Ingresse in 2024.
It's long since moved past running: carnivals, music festivals, graduations, schools, tourist sites, social events. The site has 70+ categories.
Why it grew: three things at once

First, Rock in Rio. The sharp climb is concentrated from Sep 10 to Oct 1, right after the music festival (September 4–13), and rankings are computed on a 30-day rolling window, so that traffic got absorbed.
Second, peak season. 9–November is the race peak in Brazil and the Northern Hemisphere, and competitors rose too: Banlek went from 37k to 22k, Europe's Sportograf from 92k to 78k, and the US's MarathonFoto from 290k to 230k (Tranco, 08-06 to 11-05).
Third, the domain itself inflates the numbers. The main site users see is fotop.com, which rose only about 1.2×. fotop.com.br sits behind the platform's API services and a large number of photographer shop subdomains, and ranking systems count all those requests. Chrome real-user data supports this: fotop.com.br stayed in the global top 5k and Brazil top 100k from 10 through September, without moving. So the rise mainly reflects the whole platform getting busy, not a surge in web visitors. The second climb that began in late October has not been matched to a specific event (inference: autumn races plus a batch of holiday events).
The app is a supporting player: 329k installs on Google Play, +7 over the last 3,896 days, ranked #99 in the Brazil Photography free chart (11-07); the iOS version has only 71 ratings in Brazil.
Where users come from: organizers bring them in
Fotop's customer acquisition costs almost nothing, because its biggest channel is the organizers:
- Official exclusive partnerships. Maratona do Rio 2026 official exclusive (one event alone has 10K, 1.42M photos; O Globo reported 10M cumulative, with the partnership extended to 2027), São Silvestre's official photo and video brand, Rock in Rio's "official fan photo brand," Lollapalooza Brasil, and Rock in Rio Lisboa. Organizers take a cut of sales, and registration emails, race websites and on-site banners all send traffic its way.
- Give first, sell later. Rock in Rio sells presale packages; São Silvestre and Orsi Run give away a "Foto Cortesia" free photo; there's also a gallery service paid for by the organizer with free downloads for participants. The free photo draws people in to register, and then the full package is sold.
- Photographers sell for themselves. Each photographer or team has its own subdomain shop, and they share links in running club Facebook groups and on Instagram. 150k suppliers, each one bringing in buyers for the platform.
- Creators and content. On TikTok, @lukassebert posted "all my Lollapalooza photos this year were shot by Fotop," 279k views (2026-03); running creator @correcorre covered official Ibirapuera Park shoots, 39k views; the company also made a documentary, "Fotopers."
- Search. Each event gets its own page, plus tutorials like "how to find my race photos," so searching "event name + fotos" lands you on their pages.
I couldn't verify whether they run paid ads.
Who it's competing with
| Name | Where | Scale | How Fotop differs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Banlek | Brazil, web + app | 1.13M Play installs, +7k over 31 days, #8 in Brazil photography; 2024 revenue R$20M (Exame) | Lower commission (0% on subscriptions), sells physical merch, runs a photographer community, takes on football stadiums and landmarks; acquired Epics for R$9.5M to enter Europe. Stronger consumer scale and growth than Fotop. |
| Foco Radical | Brazil, web | Global rank around 59k, claims to have served 2M+ athletes | Races only; publicly feuded with Fotop over race photography rights, and running creators have filmed videos about it |
| Fotto(Alboom) | Brazil, web + app | Global rank around 63k, 56k Play installs | A photo-selling platform that grew out of a photographer website builder |
| Sportograf / MarathonFoto | Europe / US | Global rank about 78k / 230k | Signs contracts with organizers and uses in-house photographers; not an open marketplace |
| Photohawk, Honcho, FindMyShots, 9Pic, Acciopix | Web tools | Ranked somewhere between 300k and 600k, or not ranked at all | Sells face-search as a tool to photographers or organizers rather than matching both sides |
| Mexico's Márcate and other timing companies | Mexico | — | Timing companies throw in face-recognition photos as a free extra |
Brazil alone has 4 platforms of similar size, commissions all around 10%, and face recognition and bib-number search are everywhere. Fotop's edge isn't the technology; it's the official contracts for top races and music festivals, plus its overseas sites in Portugal, Spain and Latin America. The media has covered it thoroughly: PEGN, O Globo, Webrun and Gazeta Corporativa have all reported on it, Banlek's revenue is public in Exame, and Banlek and Fotto have both used Fotop as a comparison in their own blogs.
If it were you
One-line verdict: C. The business is real and gets repeat purchases (the founders' line: "if you haven't posted photos, you haven't trained," and the same person buys at every race), but in Brazil it's already a red ocean, and what decides the winner is relationships with organizers and on-site execution for hundreds of people, which you can't get quickly. Study its playbook, but don't go head-to-head with it.
Good fit for People who already have connections in a city's running clubs, cycling groups, schools or tourist sites; small teams that have done race timing, registration or photo studio work; people in countries or cities where event photos are still shared as cloud-drive links by photographers, with no local platform.
Bad fit for Anyone hoping to break into Brazil with "my face recognition is more accurate" (that's now table stakes, and plenty of overseas tools already sell it); anyone with no organizer in hand who is counting on organic consumer traffic; anyone aiming at Rock in Rio-scale events (those need hundreds of photographers uploading and searchable on the same day).
How to build it Work backwards from their sequence: sign organizers first, then sell to consumers. Pick a narrow scenario and go deep on it: all road running and cycling races in one city, graduations across one country, or the photo spots of one large scenic area or theme park. Copy three things from the product: find photos by face and bib number; give each photographer a shop page of their own to share; and offer presale packages plus a free photo, bundled for sale so the average order grows from one photo's price to a whole package. For face recognition, use an off-the-shelf cloud service or open-source model, and don't spend time on the tech.
How to acquire customers The organizers are your channel: offer them a revenue share in exchange for a link in registration emails, an entry in the race website's menu, or a banner at the venue. Then look for local running and cycling creators who film "my photos from XX race" type videos, and build a page for each event that can be found by searching "event name + photos."
Timing Sign your first organizers before the next season starts in the market you choose. Brazil and the Southern Hemisphere have two peaks, 3–May and 9–November; the Northern Hemisphere mainly runs in spring and autumn (inference). Fotop and Banlek are both expanding into Portugal, Spain, Mexico and France, so if those are your markets, the window will keep narrowing.
Signs you've got it wrong ① After a round of outreach, the organizers have all already signed exclusives with Fotop, Banlek or a local timing company; ② at the first few events, the share of viewers who pay for the gallery is too low to cover the photographers' fees; ③ timing companies or registration platforms start including free face-search with results, pushing the price of a single photo to zero.

Fotop (fotop.com.br): why it's climbing
In one line: Fotop is a Brazilian event and race photo platform, 20 years old and never funded. Photographers upload shots, participants find their photos with face recognition or bib numbers and pay to download, and the platform takes a cut. Most of fotop.com.br's ranking climb this time isn't new users flooding in. Three things stacked up: domain scope (it's the domain carrying the API and photographer store subdomains), the official September Rock in Rio partnership, and the southern-hemisphere autumn race season. This is an established, somewhat known business in a crowded niche, not a new breakout.
1. What it is
- Photographers upload for free and the platform takes a commission: the official help center says 10% (faq.fotop.com, «Quais são os custos»); PEGN reports about 12% on average, plus an option where photographers pay an upload fee for a lower commission. Single photos sell for R$15–20, and bundles are encouraged (one São Silvestre bundle is about R$100 for 300 photos). Source: PEGN 2025-01
- Scale (PEGN, per the founders): 2024 years, 500M photos uploaded, 150k registered photographers, operating in 10 countries (Portugal, Colombia, Ecuador, France, Spain, etc.), 2024 growth of 100%, a 2025 target of +150%, sales in the «hundreds of millions of reais» range; never taken outside investment.
- History: founders André Chaco and Renato Cukier started selling photos at Rally dos Sertões 2000 years ago, had a prototype by 2004, and incorporated in 2015. The same team also built Ticket Sports (sold to Ingresse in 2024).
- The category is far more than running now: carnivals, concerts/festivals, graduations, schools, travel, and social events are all covered (the site lists 70+ categories).
2. Traffic and app data: how big the real growth is
Tranco (traffic library, 2026-11-05)
| Date | fotop.com.br | fotop.com |
|---|---|---|
| 08-06 | 142,413 | 57,120 |
| 09-10 | 125,916 | 60,352 |
| 09-17 | 97,069 | 58,302 |
| 09-24 | 68,440 | 55,038 |
| 10-01 | 58,144 | 52,024 |
| 10-22 | 51,228 | 47,754 |
| 11-05 | 36,040 | 47,249 |
CrUX (real Chrome users, traffic library): fotop.com.br's global bucket stayed in the top 100k from 2026-05 to 09, and its Brazil bucket stayed in the top 10k, with no bucket change. fotop.com stayed in the global top 50k and Brazil top 5 thousand. September rose in Mexico from top 500k to top 100k and entered France at top 500k (all tail buckets; country-level tail rankings swing a lot).
How to read these numbers
- Domain scope: the event pages on fotop.com call
services.fotop.com.br(confirmed from the page source of rockinrio.fotop.com), and many photographer and partner stores sit under*.fotop.com.brsubdomains (fotopeventos., festivais., esportividade., racingbrasil., chaco., etc.). The app's developer domain is also fotop.com.br. The DNS and network-layer sources in Tranco (Umbrella, Cloudflare Radar) credit API calls and subdomains to fotop.com.br, so its climb looks more like the whole platform's request volume growing than more web visitors. CrUX staying flat supports this. - Event: Rock in Rio 2026 (September 4–13). Fotop is the «official fan photo brand». It deployed 300 photographers and 4 studios, nearly 4 times the scale of its 2025 debut (80 photographers). It expects to shoot over 5M photos, with revenue projected to rise 500–600% over the last edition (Gazeta Corporativa). The gallery for September 4 alone had 693,072 photos (rockinrio.fotop.com event page). The steep Tranco rise (09-10 to 10-01) lines up with this: a 30-day rolling window absorbed the traffic.
- Seasonality: 9–November is peak race season in Brazil and the northern hemisphere, and peers rose over the same stretch (Tranco 08-06 → 11-05): Banlek 36,760 → 22,430, Sportograf 92,136 → 78,001, MarathonFoto 290,070 → 228,990, FinisherPix 372,292 → 295,485, Foco Radical 69,044 → 58,969. fotop.com.br rose the most (×4), while fotop.com rose only about ×1.2.
- App: Google Play
br.com.fotop.fotopApphas 329,745 installs, +3,896 over the last 7 days, ranked #99 in Brazil's free Photography category (googleplay library 2026-11-07). The iOS version has only 71 ratings (iTunes BR). Most traffic is on the web; the app is secondary.
3. Competitors
| Name | Where | Launched | Scale | How Fotop differs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Banlek | Brazil web + app | 2019-12(App) | Play 1,128,642 installs, +31,247 over 7 days, #8 in Brazil Photography; CrUX Brazil top 1 thousand; Tranco 22,430; 2024-year revenue R$20M (Exame); acquired Epics for R$9.5M and expanded into Europe (PEGN 2024-11) | Commission-based (9–10%, with subscriptions possibly 0%), physical merch, a photographer community (Banlek House), and stadium and landmark deals. Bigger user base than Fotop and growing faster. |
| Foco Radical | Brazil web | Long-established | Tranco 58,969, CrUX Brazil top 5 thousand, claims to have served 2M+ athletes | Pure race photography; publicly feuded with Fotop over race photography rights («treta»), with running YouTubers and TikTokers covering it |
| Fotto(Alboom) | Brazil web + app | — | Tranco 63,409, Play 56,366 installs | A selling platform that grew out of a photographer SaaS (Alboom) |
| Sportograf | Europe | Long-established | Tranco 78,001 | Signs organizers to contracts and runs its own photographer teams; not an open marketplace |
| MarathonFoto | US | Long-established | Tranco 228,990 | Exclusive for major US marathons, in-house photography |
| FinisherPix / Photohawk / Honcho / FindMyShots / 9Pic / Acciopix | Web SaaS | Mostly recent | Tranco 295k to 600k, or not ranked | Sells tools to photographers or organizers (face-recognition galleries, WhatsApp selfie matching) and doesn't run a two-sided marketplace |
| Pixieset / Pic-Time | Web SaaS | Long-established | Tranco 6,437 / 31,562 | Tools for wedding and portrait photographers; doesn't do the «find yourself» flow for large events |
| Timing companies like Márcate | Mexico | — | — | Timing companies add face-recognition photos as a bonus, an alternative route for Fotop into Mexico |
| Google Photos face grouping | Big-company features | — | — | Only covers photos the platform itself shot; for photos taken by others at an event, these platforms are the only option |
Bottom line: face-recognition photo search plus commission is already a red ocean. Brazil alone has 4 platforms of similar size, and Banlek clearly leads on the app side.
4. Growth tactics (where users come from)
- Official/exclusive photo partnerships with event organizers (main channel, confirmed): Maratona do Rio 2026 official exclusive (one event alone sold 1,426,450 photos from 10K runners; O Globo reported 10M photos in total, partnership renewed through 2027), São Silvestre official, Rock in Rio 2026 fan official photo brand, Lollapalooza Brasil, Rock in Rio Lisboa, plus daily shoots in Ibirapuera and Villa Lobos parks. Organizers take a cut of each sale (per PEGN, photographers at events like Maratona do Rio keep only about 45%), so the organizer becomes the channel: registration emails, the event website (Fotop is listed right in the rockinrio.com menu), and on-site backdrops all drive buyers to it.
- Selling packages early and giving photos away: Rock in Rio «pacote antecipado» pre-sales; São Silvestre and Orsi Run offer «Foto Cortesia» free photos; PhotoGallery by Fotop has organizers pay so participants download free (faq.fotop.com). Free photos bring people in to register, then the full package is sold.
- 150k photographers promoting on their own: every photographer or team has its own subdomain store (xxx.fotop.com / .fotop.com.br) and shares links on Instagram and Facebook running groups (e.g., the Mexican runners.mx.df group). The supply side is doing demand generation for the platform.
- Content and creators: a Lollapalooza creator video, «every photo I took this year was with Fotop» (TikTok @lukassebert, 279k views, 2026-03); running blogger @correcorre on official Ibirapuera shoots (39k views); founders on podcasts and Instagram interviews; the documentary «Fotopers» (Webrun).
- SEO: each event has its own page, plus blog posts and landing pages like «Fotos Rock in Rio» and «como encontrar minhas fotos da corrida», so searching «event name + fotos» finds them directly.
- Going global: fotop.pt, fotop.com.co, fotop.com.ec, mexico.fotop.com, imagemedia.fotop.com (Portugal, Spain); recruiting organizers at trade shows like Running USA and ISPO.
- Paid ads: nothing matched in our ad library (ads empty). Not finding them in the library doesn't mean they didn't run, so this is unverified.
5. Why it took off
- The demand is real, and people come back to buy: after COVID, sport and «experiences» gained weight, and «no photos means the workout didn't count». Users buy after every event (Chaco's words in PEGN).
- 20 years of organizer relationships and on-site execution are the real moat: hundreds of photographers uploading on the day, millions of photos searchable by face the same day. Large organizers want that, which is how Fotop won exclusives with Maratona do Rio, São Silvestre and Rock in Rio.
- From running to music festivals: Rock in Rio grew from 80 to 300 people, which took «event photos» from the running crowd into mass entertainment. September's jump lines up directly with this.
- An open photographer market: any photographer can sign up, supply costs almost nothing, and one Sunday can process about 12k photos per minute (PEGN).
6. Differentiation
Compared with Banlek and Foco Radical, Fotop's edge isn't technology. Everyone has face recognition and bib search, and commissions sit around 10%, with Banlek cheaper. The difference is exclusive official partnerships with B2B2C events: the «official photo brand» status for top races and festivals, cross-category coverage across Lollapalooza, Rock in Rio, graduations and travel, and overseas sites in Portugal, Spain and Latin America. That's what keeps it at scale, and it's the direct cause of this ranking climb. But on app installs and CrUX, Banlek is stronger on consumer reach and growth, so Fotop hasn't clearly "outperformed on differentiation."
7. Who's seeing it and whether anyone is copying it
- Already widely covered: PEGN (2025-01, with revenue scale and growth), O Globo, Webrun and Gazeta Corporativa have all written about it; competitor Banlek's revenue is public via Exame (year 2024: R$20M); Banlek and Fotto also use Fotop as the comparison point in their blogs. Our X corpus has had no posts mentioning fotop in nearly 90 days.
- Copycats: hard to say who copied whom, since everyone in this model is a peer; over the past two years a batch of overseas AI face-search SaaS products have appeared (Photohawk, Honcho, FindMyShots, 9Pic, Acciopix).
8. What others can borrow
- Sign the organizers first, then sell to consumers: bring event organizers into revenue share in exchange for exclusive shooting rights and official traffic referrals, so acquisition costs almost nothing.
- Open the platform and let photographers sell for themselves: each one gets a subdomain store, and the supply side does the promotion for you.
- Pre-sell bundles + free photos + bundled sales (one person's photos are worthless to others, so sell all of them to him if he'll buy), pushing average order value from R$15 to R$100.
- Expand from sports to music festivals, graduations and tourist spots: "you at the event" works in any setting.
9. Still unclear
- In fotop.com.br's Tranco climb, how much comes from API/App requests versus real web visits: CrUX only updates through September, so whether Chrome users moved up a tier during 10–November has to wait for the next data release.
- The second climb that started in late October (from 10-22 at 51k to 11-05 at 36k) has no matching event yet; it could be autumn competitions plus festivals like Folianópolis and Rock the Mountain, or a technical migration (for example, more requests going through services.fotop.com.br).
- Whether it really hit +150% in 2025; the real scale of the Mexico and France expansion (CrUX tier changes sit in the tail, so confidence is low).
- Whether it is running paid ads (we couldn't match any in our library).
