$350k for a domain: free.ai uses an old SEO template to take "free AI"
What it is A "free AI tools directory" that works without signup: hundreds of tools and hundreds of models, billed by token, with subscriptions, API and VPS sold on the side.
Why it took off The owner paid $350k for the most straightforward head-term domain, filled it with thousands of SEO pages from a free-tool site template he has used for over a decade, and backed it with generous free quotas on self-hosted open-source models; it picked up traffic in emerging-market search from 8 through September.
CHow you could follow Don't build a directory. Pick a niche with search volume, something like "free AI + a specific task", or a non-English market, pair it with an exact-match domain, use self-hosted models to make the free quota large, and slowly capture the long tail through engineered SEO.
Global rank 142k · 90 days ago 381k
A person who has run free-tool sites for over a decade paid $350k this spring for free.ai, stuffed it with 477 AI tools, and in 90 days its global rank climbed from 380k to 140k, with most traffic from India, the Philippines, Turkey and Europe. It invented nothing. It won on the domain, the coverage, and free quotas that are actually usable. Below: who built it, where the traffic comes from, how it makes money, and which parts you can copy.
Under a Show HN with 3 points
About two weeks earlier, the first Show HN on Mar 28 had also reached only 5 points. By the usual script, the product should have ended there. But by early November, the counter on its homepage read 660k "creators" and a cumulative 5.15B tokens. Both Show HNs did nothing; it grew out of search.
Who built it: a veteran who lives off keyword domains
nadermx is John Nader, founder of Yout.com, the YouTube downloader that once sued the RIAA. The company is Muddy Holdings LLC, self-funded, with no outside money (free.ai/about).
His personal site lists 30 sites, almost all built from one template: a domain that matches the search term exactly + free + no signup + a large set of tool pages. TTS.ai, STT.ai, PDF.chat, OCR.chat, Calculator.Free, Fonts.Free, MicrophoneTest.com, plus a Spanish version, ia.gratis. free.ai is that template placed on the most expensive domain of the lot.
The domain math: it was listed at Atom.com in late March at $420k, and domain sales records (NameBio / DNJournal) show $350k, Apr 2, among the top .ai domain sales this year.
How much it grew and when
| Date | Global ranking (Tranco) |

| 2026-09-10 | 308k |
| 2026-09-24 | 204k |
| 2026-10-08 | 147k |
| 2026-11-05 | 142k |
The main climb came in September (this ranking lags real traffic by one to two weeks; the real surge was roughly mid-August to late September). Chrome real-user tiers agree: globally it was in the top 500k in July and entered the top 100k in August; India entered the top 50k in August, the Philippines and Turkey the top 50k in September; Germany, France, Spain, Canada, Mexico and the Netherlands entered the top 100k. The US, UK, Brazil and Japan stayed in the top 500k the whole time. In short, the ones who picked up "free AI" were mainly price-sensitive emerging markets and non-English European countries.
The homepage counter (self-reported by the site; its method and accuracy can't be verified) can be read from web archives as a curve: ~12.6k at the end of June, 60k in early August, 16 617k in October, and 6 661k in November. After mid-October it added only about 40k over three weeks, and the rank flattened around 140k.
The Android app has only a bit over 10k downloads (Google Play, 11-03); iOS is still in testing, so nearly all traffic is on the web.
Where users come from
First, the domain is the channel. "Free" and "AI" are the two biggest search-intent words. Searching "free ai" on Brave puts free.ai at #5 (11-07); I did not verify the Google ranking. A four-letter domain also gets direct-typed traffic for free.
Second, engineered programmatic SEO. Its sitemap has 1,443 URLs: 626 model pages, 113 "transcribe [language]" pages, 107 voice pages, 97 image-tool pages, 62 video-tool pages, and so on, each catching a "free ai + X" long-tail query. More telling is its robots.txt, whose comments record a long run of operations logs: in May 19 it removed whole classes of pages (/best/, /blog/, /compare/, /alternative/) and returned 410 (to avoid Google's penalty for scaled low-quality content); in early May it cleared parameterized pages flagged as duplicates in Search Console; in June it ran an audit and blocked search-result pages. Multilingual pages ship only for languages with complete translations. All of this happened before the climb from 7 through September. The inference is that these cleanups helped rankings rise, but there's no evidence isolating a single trigger.
Third, free quotas that are actually usable. Without signup, 6,000 tokens a day; with signup, 30,000 a day (roughly 300 chats or 30 images); invite someone and you each get 30,000; a .edu email gets 500k a month (free.ai/pricing). It can afford to give this because the main models are open-source models it runs on its own A100 hardware (Qwen 3.6, FLUX, Kokoro, Whisper, CogVideoX), so marginal cost is low. How much the invite rewards contribute to growth can't be seen.
Not from these: Both Show HNs went nowhere; the Meta and Google ad libraries return no advertisers for its several domains, and the site runs only Clicky analytics, with no ad pixels seen. From Oct 23 to Nov 1 a wave of nearly identical posts appeared: "Someone packed 477+ FREE AI tools into ONE website", @rammcodes on X, Facebook videos from India and the Philippines, Instagram Reels saying "comment FREEAI and I'll send you the link", and several blog posts. The copy is too uniform to be organic, so someone may have distributed a press release, or they may be copying one another; whether any of it was paid, I don't know. But it arrived after the main climb, and the counter didn't accelerate because of it, so it is not what drove the growth.
Where the money comes from
Revenue is not public. What is visible is a long paid ladder: subscriptions from $5/month, rising to $99, $499, $2,499 and $4,999/month; an API that resells external models (570 of them, at 1.5x retail); VPS plans at $9 to $49/month; and "write code → one-click deploy to yourapp.app.free.ai". The same owner's vps.org climbed in rank in step, from 687k to 242k, which suggests free.ai is sending developers over there.
These look more like paid add-ons on top of free traffic than the cause of growth.
Who it's competing with
| Product | Global rank (Tranco, 11-05) | How it differs |
|---|---|---|
| Perchance | 5,480 | No signup, unlimited image-generation chat; community-built generators |
| Poe / Monica / Genspark | 13k / 15k / 18k | Multi-model chat aggregator, strong brand, small free quota |
| DeepAI | 14k | Veteran free-AI site from 2016 with few tools; ranks #1 for "free ai" on Brave |
| Duck.ai, free tiers of ChatGPT / Gemini | 18k (duck.ai) | The big free chat players already offer this, but they don't cover hundreds of niche tools |
| TinyWow | 76k | Prototype "free tools directory", ad-funded, weak AI capabilities |
| HIX AI / Toolbaz / Vondy | 81k / 280k / 290k | Same programmatic page approach, mostly wrapping third-party APIs with small quotas |
| Pollinations.ai | 84k | Open-source free APIs for developers, no consumer tool pages |
This category is already crowded, and several rivals are bigger. free.ai reached rank 140k by stacking three things at once: the most straightforward domain, a tool-page count an order of magnitude larger, and quotas backed by self-hosted models. The product experience itself has nothing distinctive. I haven't seen anyone copying it except itself (ia.gratis, TTS.ai, STT.ai).
If it were you
One-line verdict: You can learn a complete playbook from it, but copying it isn't worth it. The most valuable piece (a $350k head-term domain plus over a decade of SEO craft) isn't something you can get, and the "free AI tools directory" slot is already taken by DeepAI, Perchance, TinyWow and itself.
Who it suits: people already doing programmatic SEO who have GPUs or cheap inference access; people who know a non-English market well (Indonesian, Vietnamese, Turkish, Arabic and the like; Nader already did Spanish himself).
Who it doesn't suit: anyone wanting to build "yet another AI tool aggregator"; anyone without SEO experience who expects posts or Show HN to drive growth; anyone who can't bring inference costs down or can't afford large quotas.
How to get users: almost entirely search. Based on its experience, social reposts and HN are icing; the real work is keeping page quality and crawl health high enough that Google is willing to rank you.
When to get in: there's no clear window. This is slow work; it usually takes three to six months before rankings show. But every time a big player expands its free tier, a batch of niche tool queries gets absorbed, and the later you enter, the narrower the opening.
What would mean I got it wrong: If free.ai's rank starts climbing again a few months after it stalled in October, and the US and UK start moving up too, that means the "big keyword domain + big directory" play also works in mainstream markets. The thesis needs re-evaluating. Conversely, if it drops back beyond 300k after the next Google core update, that means search engines are tightening down on this programmatic page-spam approach, and narrow versions of it need to be careful too.

Why Free.ai (free.ai) took off
Channel: web (Tranco climb recall, pool C1). Research date 2026-11-07.
One line
Free.ai is a web-based "free AI tools directory": it works without signing up, has 477 tool pages, runs self-hosted open models (Qwen 3.6 35B / FLUX / Kokoro / Whisper / CogVideoX), and resells 570+ external models, billed by token. It also sells subscriptions, API, and VPS. Three things drove it: a $350k purchase of the exact-match "free ai" domain, an SEO veteran who has run free-tool sites for over a decade (the founder of Yout.com), and a genuinely usable free quota backed by self-hosted open models. In late October a wave of "someone packed 477 free AI tools into one website" reposter videos showed up, but that came after the main growth.

- 90 days ×2.7, mostly climbing in September (Tranco lags real traffic by 1–2 weeks, so the real surge ran from mid-August to late September); after Oct 8 it flatlined at 141k to 143k and stopped growing.
- CrUX (real Chrome users): globally, 2026-05 to 07 is the top 500k, and 08 and 09 are the top 100k. By country: India reached the top 100k before July, and moved into the top 50k in August; the Philippines and Turkey entered the top 50k in September; Germany, France, Spain, Canada, Mexico, and the Netherlands entered the top 100k in August; the US, UK, Brazil, Japan, and Indonesia stayed in the top 500k the whole time. So the traffic came mainly from emerging markets and non-English-speaking Europe, not the US.
- The counter the homepage displays (read from Wayback snapshots; the site claims "Stats on the site are real", unverified):
| Snapshot date | "creators" | Cumulative tokens |
|---|---|---|

| 2026-11-06 | 660,881 | 5,151.7M |
From July to October this number grew 50×, which lines up with the timelines in Tranco and CrUX. After Oct 16 it added only 44k over three weeks, so growth clearly slowed.
- The app is not the main driver: the Android version
free.ai(Muddy Holdings LLC) has 10K+ downloads and 2.14K reviews, rated 4.4 stars (Google Play page, last updated 2026-11-03). The iOS version is still in TestFlight beta (free.ai/ios/). Nearly all the traffic is on the web.
2. Who made it
- The founder is John (Johnathan) Nader (HN account nadermx, X @nadermx), with the company Muddy Holdings LLC, self-funded (free.ai/about). He is the founder of Yout.com (the YouTube downloader site that was sued by the RIAA), and his open-source project backgroundremover has 8,163 stars on GitHub.
- His personal site john.nader.mx lists 30 sites, nearly all "exact-match keyword domain + free tool": TTS.ai, STT.ai, PDF.chat, OCR.chat, Clip.video, Transcribe.Free, Calculator.Free, Tarot.Free, Fonts.Free, Downloader.org, Pdf.to, VPS.org, ia.gratis (the Spanish-language free.ai), InternetSpeed.my, MicrophoneTest.com, plus misspelled big-brand domains that catch typo traffic, like tikt.com / instag.com / faceb.com. This is someone who has done free-tool SEO for over a decade, and free.ai is his current flagship.
- Domain: 2026-03-25 sold on Atom.com before (list price $420K; tldinvestors.com 2026-03-25). NameBio and DNJournal recorded the sale at $350,000, dated 2026-04-02 (namepros.com, dnscroll.com, dn.com news). It ranks among the top .ai domain sales this year (name.com lists it at #4). Nader confirmed "350k" himself on HN (HN 47697160 comment).
- He launched Show HN 3 days after getting the domain (2026-03-28,5 points), and again in April 8 (3 points). Neither took off.

| ia.gratis | Web | 2026 | CrUX: top 100k in Spain and Mexico | The Spanish version run by the same owner, not an outside competitor. |
Bottom line: this category is already crowded (DeepAI, Perchance, and TinyWow are all bigger). free.ai didn't invent anything new. It works because of a combination of three things: the domain, the free quota, and tool coverage.
4. Where users came from (growth tactics)
- The exact-match domain goes after the big "free ai" keyword (confirmed ranking; weight unverified): Brave search for "free ai" ranks free.ai #5, and its Google Play page ranks #11 (Brave API, 2026-11-07). This 4-letter domain is itself the brand, the keyword, and a memorable hook, and it also brings direct-visit traffic.
- Programmatic SEO + actively managed Search Console (confirmed): the sitemap contains 1,443 URLs (626 model pages, 113 "transcribe/<language>" pages, 107 voice pages, 97 image tool pages, 62 video tool pages, 20 youtube tool pages, and so on). The robots.txt comments record a long list of SEO maintenance: 2026-05-19 pulled whole sections (/best/, /blog/, /compare/, /alternative/) and returns 410 (this looks like avoiding Google's penalty for mass low-quality content); 2026-05-02 cleaned up ?lang= and ?ref= parameter pages based on the Search Console "duplicate pages" report; 2026-06-14 ran an audit and blocked search result pages; 2026-06-20 blocked the stats beacon based on crawl stats. Multilingual pages only go out as hreflang for languages with enough translation coverage (the homepage currently has only en and gl). Its SEO is engineered and continuously tuned over the long term, and the timing fell between 7 and the traffic surge in September.
- Free quota + invite rewards (confirmed to exist, effect unverified): 6,000 tokens a day without signing up, 30,000 a day once registered (roughly 300 chats or 30 images), and an invite gives both people 30,000; .edu email addresses get 500k tokens a month (free.ai/pricing).
- Short video and social reposting (confirmed, but late): between 2026-10-23 and 11-01, a batch of posts with nearly identical wording appeared: "Someone packed 477+ FREE AI tools into ONE website". They include @rammcodes on X (2026-10-24), Indian creator Dubeyankur's Facebook video, a Philippines Facebook page, Instagram Reels saying "comment FREEAI and I'll send you the link" (dates decoded from the shortcodes: 10-23, 10-26, 11-01), YouTube Shorts, and blogs such as starbelo.com, theaiflowhub.com, and the Arabic-language techflixar.com (10-23 to 10-25). The copy is this consistent, so it may be a shared promo script or cross-reposting; I can't confirm whether any of it was paid. This wave came after the traffic climb (8–September), and the homepage counter didn't accelerate after 10-16 either, so it did not cause the surge.
- HN: both Show HN posts scored in single digits and brought no traffic.
- Ads: The metaads and googleads libraries show no advertiser for the domains free.ai, tts.ai, vps.org (but these libraries only track a list of products, so no match doesn't mean no spend). The site only has Clicky analytics; no Meta or Google ad pixels spotted.
- Cross-linking its own sites: vps.org rose along with free.ai (687k → 242k). free.ai's "Coder → Deploy → yourapp.app.free.ai" and VPS from $9/mo push users to vps.org (note that DNS traffic to app.free.ai subdomains also lifts Tranco). No yout.com homepage linking directly to free.ai was found, and yout.com fell from 33k to 64k in August.
5. Why it took off
- The domain is the channel: Paying $350K for "free" plus "ai", the two biggest search-intent words, it kept growing through search and direct URL entry even after its Show HN flopped.
- The veteran playbook: Nader runs the same template across 30 sites (exact-match domain, free, no signup, programmatic tool pages); free.ai is that template plus AI tools, on the most expensive domain of the lot.
- Self-hosted open models make "free" actually work: Running Qwen, FLUX, Kokoro and Whisper on A100 keeps marginal cost low, so it can give away 30K tokens a day. Price-sensitive markets like India, the Philippines and Turkey, where CrUX grew fastest, are a natural fit.
- Breadth for long-tail traffic: 477 tools, transcription pages in 113 languages, and hundreds of model pages, each catching a long-tail query; "free ai X" searches are big in emerging markets.
- A long monetization ladder: from $5/mo, then $99, $499, $2,499 up to $4,999/mo, plus API markup (external models resold at 1.5x retail), VPS at $9–49/mo, and @handle personal AI pages, splitting free traffic across several paid doors. Revenue is not public (not in TrustMRR or indie databases).
6. Differentiation
Compared with free tool sites like DeepAI, Perchance and TinyWow, what sets it apart: (1) a dead-simple domain; (2) an order of magnitude more tools, plus a model catalog; (3) self-hosted open models and external models sharing one token balance; (4) API, VPS and hosting sold on the side, reaching from casual users to developers. What really drove it was (1) SEO from tool breadth, plus a generous free tier; the API, VPS and Coder look more like monetization extensions than causes of growth. The product itself has nothing unique (one HN commenter reported signup emails not arriving).
7. How many people know about it / is anyone copying it
- Awareness: whispered in small circles, only starting to spill over. Revenue not disclosed; two Show HN posts got no traction; the domain community (NamePros, DNJournal) knows the 350k sale; a wave of AI-tool reposter accounts pushed it on X / IG / FB only in late October; no mainstream media coverage found; the x-radar local corpus returns no "free.ai" hits in the last 90 days.
- Copycats: none specifically copying it found; it is copying itself (ia.gratis in Spanish, TTS.ai, STT.ai). Searching "free ai" puts keyword sites like aifreeforever.com and zerotwo.ai/free-ai on the same results page, but they are not copying it.
8. What to borrow
- If you can afford an exact-match domain for a big keyword, it's a real long-term search asset; if not, learn from Nader and use new extensions like .free, .chat, .gratis to build keyword domains.
- Self-hosted open models push per-use cost close to zero. Use a generous free tier to win search rankings and word of mouth, then unify billing through token balances and convert to subscriptions and API.
- When you programmatically generate pages, watch Search Console as closely as it does: pull low-quality pages back with 410, clean up parameter pages, and only ship hreflang for languages with complete translations, to avoid Google's scaled-content penalty.
9. Still unclear
- Nothing clearly pins down the direct trigger for the surge starting in 7 / September: a Google ranking jump (a core update?), invite-driven virality, or one specific tool going viral. No evidence to separate them.
- What the homepage "creators" count actually measures (registered users? anonymous visitors who generated content?) can't be verified.
- Whether the coordinated promo posts in late October were paid.
- Revenue and paid conversion rates are unknown.
- How much of Tranco comes from API or app.free.ai subdomain DNS traffic is unknown; still, CrUX moving up in step suggests real web visits did grow.
