Freebuff, the free coding agent: model costs paid by advertisers, users posting for it
What it is A free AI coding agent with no card and no self-supplied key required (available as CLI, desktop, web and Android), with model costs paid by advertisers.
Why it took off Chinese Flash models got cheap enough for ads to cover them, and after Amp Free shut down mid-year, it became the only truly zero-cost agent. Add users posting about it on Reddit and X to earn credits, plus a wave of "free alternative to X" SEO pages, and it caught fire first in price-sensitive markets like India, Southeast Asia and Turkey.
CHow you could follow Don't go head-on with another free coding agent. Copy the playbook: build a "free alternative to an expensive product" in another category, ship programmatic SEO, let AI crawlers in fully; split credits by region and model, and reserve expensive models for paying users.
Global rank 49k · 90 days ago 463k
Freebuff is a free AI coding agent from a YC team. No card, no self-supplied key, up to 30 hours a day. Its global traffic rank climbed from 90k to 460k over 49 days. Its rise has little to do with how strong the model is. Three things lined up: Chinese Flash models got cheap enough for ads to cover; the best-known free product in the category shut down mid-year; and it sold users' attention and engagement to advertisers, and used it on itself too. Below: how it got going, where the money comes from, which moves you can copy, and why head-on competition isn't advised.
An "Earn" button
In 2026 Sep 19, r/ClaudeCode and r/opencode saw nearly identical posts titled "PSA: Freebuff encourages astroturfing on the … subreddit". The poster said the Freebuff account had an "Earn" page where two kinds of tasks earned 15 "freebucks" (in-app credits): "People are just doing it for credits."
Around the same time, several "has anyone used Freebuff?" threads appeared on Reddit with low upvotes but unusually many comments: one on r/vibecoding had 20 upvotes and 608 comments, another 13 upvotes and 266 comments; one on r/opencodeCLI had 10 upvotes and 199 comments. Someone also asked "Is freebuff bounties still working??", meaning whether the credit-earning tasks still worked.
Behind that button is a real business. Freebuff's advertiser page (freebuff.com/advertisers/engagement, 11-07 opened) is blunt: paste a link to an X, LinkedIn, Reddit or GitHub post, from $10 a day, to buy 20 engagements. The post enters the Earn task flow, where developers comment, like, repost or star "in their own words," and earn credits after submitting a screenshot. The page's case study is co-founder Victor Cheng's own X account, labeled "ours, not a commissioned case study": per-post views rose from about 300 to 10k–50k.
What it is
A full family of free coding agents: CLI (npm i -g freebuff), desktop (can run several agents at once), web, and an App Builder (merged with vly.ai, pitched as "Lovable, Bolt-style features, free"), plus an Android app.
Behind it is Codebuff, from YC's 2024 fall batch, originally building an open-source multi-agent coding CLI. Co-founder James Grugett also co-founded the prediction market Manifold. In March 2026, the team pivoted to Freebuff; the launch post read "the free coding agent, 100% free, up to 10x as fast as Claude." The original codebuff repo was renamed in place and carried its 14k stars over.
The free tier is real, but already capped. The pricing page (11-07) says: the free tier gives 30 hours a day, no card required, but only with DeepSeek V4.1 Flash. Monthly plans at $8, $25 and $60 buy more hours and unlock models such as GPT-6 Luna and Claude Haiku 5.5. Fine print on the page: accounts signed up after Nov 3 no longer get the other models; plans bought before Nov 8 keep their current allowance. It is tightening.
Why this year
The models are cheap enough for ads to cover. Chinese Flash models like DeepSeek V4 Flash, GLM, and MiMo cost under $1 per million tokens (per saascity's review). In Nov 3, an AI safety researcher published an analysis of part of Freebuff's production traffic for one month: 98.9% of tokens ran on DeepSeek V4 Flash alone, roughly 85k users and 2.78M sessions. A "free agent" is basically the cheapest model underneath.
The rival left the field. Sourcegraph's Amp Free was the first well-known "ads pay for a free agent." In March 2026, it pulled ads and switched to a daily free quota, then closed to new users mid-year, and the company says it won't reopen. The review site bitdoze put it bluntly: "For $0 work, FreeBuff is where the actually-free agent tier went." Anyone who wanted a truly zero-cost tool went to Freebuff.
The most price-sensitive users came first. Chrome real-user data shows India, the Philippines, and Vietnam entering the global top 100k in July and the top 50k in August. Indonesia and Turkey jumped from the top 500k to the top 50k in August. The US and UK only entered the top 100k in September. The site's /live page (11-07) shows concurrent users: the US ranks first at 838, India second at 371, followed by Indonesia, Canada, Australia, Germany, and the Philippines. It has a dedicated /students landing page. Reddit reviews mostly say "good enough for an MVP, but it doesn't scale beyond that."
Where users come from
Look at the curve first. Global traffic rank (Tranco):
| Date | Rank |
|---|---|
| 07-30 | 503k |
| 08-27 | 344k |
| 09-17 | 181k |
| 10-01 | 119k |
| 10-20 | 62k |
| 11-05 | 49k |
The steepest stretch ran from mid-September to mid-October. Over the same period, monthly npm downloads of the command-line version stayed flat around 100k (111k in August, 105k each in September and October). So the site's later growth didn't come from CLI users. Web, desktop downloads, the Earn task flow, and SEO pages carried it. How much each contributed isn't visible from outside.
Five acquisition methods are visible:
- The Earn task flow. That's the button at the top. Users discuss it on Reddit and X and upvote posts to earn quota, which itself drives traffic. The official page features a case study from a co-founder's account, showing the team uses the machine itself.
- Programmatic SEO written for AI search. The site has 226 pages under /perspectives: 106 "recommended solution" pages, 49 listicles, and 195 last updated in October, right when rankings accelerated. Under /blog there are dozens of "The free alternative to X" posts, where X is Claude Code, Copilot CLI, Lovable, Figma Make, or Google AI Studio, each written one by one. robots.txt allows GPTBot, ClaudeBot, and PerplexityBot, and the pages include notes for AI agents, aiming to get cited by AI search.
- YouTube creators who make money with AI. Julian Goldie SEO has promoted it several times: "Freebuff: This FREE AI Coding Agent is INSANE!" with 23.8k views, and "FREE vs $200 AI" with 14.9k views. Whether these were paid partnerships can't be confirmed.
- The founder jokes on X. In Apr 1, he posted "Codebuff renamed to Expensivebuff, 30 agents, 0% cache hit rate." Victor Cheng keeps pushing "fighting a war on paid software." The free-vs-expensive framing is pushed hard.
- Old users and old repos. codebuff's monthly npm downloads fell from 60k in May to 4,600 in October as old users migrated; vly.ai's users were folded into the web version; and the 14k stars were already there.
The launch platforms didn't do much: Show HN (Jun 17) got only 7 points, and Product Hunt (Aug 14) got 311 votes. We found no evidence of paid ads either, but not finding it doesn't mean it didn't happen.
On user numbers, the site claims 751k users in total. In the traffic analysis above, "the top 0.1% of heavy users is about 140 people," which extrapolates to about 140k people in a one-month sample. Total signups and people actually using it each month may differ by something like five times.
Where the money comes from
The money comes mainly from advertisers, with user payments as a supplement. There are three ad types, all listed under /advertisers:
| Ads | Format | Pricing |
|---|---|---|
| Display ads | A text ad between the agent's replies, billed per click | At least $50 a day, $500 free for the first 30 days |
| Agentic ads | While writing code, the agent recommends an advertiser's product to the developer, and once the developer agrees, the advertiser's SDK is installed directly into the project | Contract and invoice, from $15,000/month |
| Engagement (Earn) | Users comment on, like, repost, or star advertisers' posts | From $10 a day, 20 engagements |
The second type is the most notable. The official site says its acceptance rate is 8%, display ad click-through is only about 1%, and it says it "integrated 2,100+ times last month." Ads are no longer just seen; they're built directly into someone else's code, and the unit price is in a different league.
Whether ads alone are enough can be read from its moves: first it added three monthly subscription tiers, then in November it tightened the free models. Reddit users are already posting "didn't you say free, why are you charging a subscription now?" Revenue has never been disclosed.
Who's competing
| Competitors | What it is | Compared with Freebuff |
|---|---|---|
| OpenCode | Open-source CLI agent with a few free models | Traffic rank 4,607, ten times Freebuff's, still rising; no ads |
| Gemini CLI, Trae (ByteDance), Qoder (Alibaba) | Free quotas and IDEs subsidized by big tech | Big companies pay, so no need to please advertisers |
| Cline, Kilo Code | Open-source VS Code extensions | Bring your own key or top up |
| Claude Code, Codex, Copilot CLI | Subscriptions $20–200/month | Freebuff's SEO pages are written as "free alternatives" to exactly these |
| Clixad | Show HN in August (4 points), quota earned by doing tasks and filling in surveys | Copycats; the site directly publishes comparison articles against Freebuff |
| ADCode | Desktop IDE that shares half its ad revenue with users | Copycat, claiming 11k active developers |
Can you ride it?
Copying a "free coding agent" head-on is something a small team almost never has the conditions for.
First, the inference costs have to be fronted. With a dozen-plus million inferred users a month and 16T input tokens on the main model, even with most of it cache-hit, money has to burn before advertisers show up. Second, advertisers care about scale, and nobody signs a $15,000-a-month contract without hundreds of thousands of developers. Third, the starting resources can't be copied by followers: the YC name, the ready-made 14k stars, and the old users who migrated. Fourth, the gap Amp left has already been taken, and big-tech free quotas and copycats are squeezing in.
What you can learn are a few tactics, not this product:
- Programmatic SEO for "free alternative to X," fully open to AI crawlers. Any category with an expensive incumbent can do this, and it's what drove the October acceleration.
- Quotas by region and model. Cheap models for everyone, expensive models only for paying users, so low-income regions don't sink the costs.
- Turn user engagement into something sellable. This is its most original idea and also the easiest to break: two sections already list it publicly, and Reddit communities have started rejecting it.
If it were you
Verdict: C. There's a lot to learn, but going head-on against an ad-funded free coding agent isn't worth it: you have to front inference costs, you need scale before advertisers come, cold-start resources can't be matched, and the gap is already taken.
Who it suits: indie developers building other tool products (writing, image-making, spreadsheets, learning to code) who have a "free alternative to a pricey product" positioning and want to borrow its SEO and quota tactics.
Who it doesn't suit: people who want to build another free coding agent that pays back through ads; people without existing users or money to cover inference costs; people who can't stand being called out by communities for inflating numbers.
How to do it: pick a niche with an expensive product as the target, build a "free, no card required" version on the cheapest open-source model, and open the full quota first only in one or two price-sensitive markets (Indonesia, the Philippines, Vietnam, Turkey). Set up paid tiers from day one, with expensive models and longer sessions for paying users only. Wait for user volume before chasing ads, and start with self-serve, pay-per-click ads.
How to acquire users: copy its approach by batch-writing two page types, "The free alternative to <expensive product>" and "best free <category> tools," allow AI crawlers in robots.txt so ChatGPT and Perplexity point people to you when they ask "is there a free X," then find YouTube creators who cover "making money with AI" and "free tools" for reviews. Trading time for signups is fine; buying Reddit engagement is not. Freebuff has already shown this route gets called out.
When to move, by: there's no hard deadline. The AI-search recommendation slots for "free alternative to X" go to whoever gets there first, and the more competing pages pile up, the harder it is to get in later.
What would show you're wrong: ① after Freebuff tightened its free models and added paid tiers in November, its rank keeps climbing (for example, reaching the global top 30k in January 2027), which would mean the ads-plus-paid model pays off and the head-on opportunity deserves another look; ② a small team without big-tech or YC resources builds a comparable free agent and gets into the top 100k within three months; ③ conversely, if Freebuff's rank drops back beyond 100k after December, it would mean growth was mostly propped up by Earn and SEO pages and real usage didn't stick, so its playbook should be discounted before you copy it.

One line
Freebuff is a "free AI coding agent funded by ads" that YC F24 team Codebuff launched in March 2026 as a pivot (CLI + desktop + web + Android). It took off not because its model or agent is better than the rest, but because three things came together:
- Timing: Chinese Flash-tier models like DeepSeek V4 Flash and GLM and MiMo got cheap enough for ads to cover the cost; Amp Free, the only similar tool with real buzz, shut down in mid-2026, leaving the "actually free agent" spot empty.
- Price-sensitive users: developers and students in India, Indonesia, the Philippines, Vietnam and Turkey flocked in first.
- An aggressive distribution machine: paid engagement "Earn" tasks, 200+ programmatic SEO pages, AI money-making creators on YouTube, and referrals for extra hours.
The sharpest part: users themselves are the promotion labor. It sells their attention and engagement to advertisers, then uses the same playbook to promote itself.
---
1. What it is
- Origin: it grew out of Codebuff (YC Fall 2024), an open-source multi-agent coding CLI that launched on PH with 2024-10-22 votes (see our producthunt library 268). Co-founder James Grugett is also a co-founder of Manifold Markets. The YC page now reads "We're making consumer agent products completely free, using the best open source models, and funded by ads" (YC).
- Launch timeline: npm package
freebuffcreated 2026-03-09 (registry.npmjs.org); first HN post 2026-03-14; Grugett posted on X: "Introducing Freebuff: the free coding agent, 100% free, up to 10x as fast as Claude" (x.com/jahooma). Opened globally in 2026 May, with 5 free hours per person per day (saascity). - GitHub: the original codebuff repo was renamed directly to CodebuffAI/freebuff (repo created the same date, 2024-07-09); the 14k stars came with the old repo.
- Product forms: Desktop (Mac/Win/Linux, can run multiple agents in parallel), CLI (
npm i -g freebuff), Web/App Builder (merged with Victor Cheng's vly.ai, blog), Cloud, Chat, and an Android app (com.freebuff.app, 128 reviews; no iOS yet). - Free quota: full-access countries get 30 hours a day; elsewhere, or via VPN, it's limited mode at 5 hours a day (4 hours under VPN) (bitdoze). Default models are MiMo v2.6 Flash, GLM 5.3 Flash, DeepSeek V4.1 Flash, and Solar; flagship models like GPT-6.1 Sol and Gemini 4 Argon get one session per account per day (GitHub README).
- Already charging: three new monthly tiers at $8 / $25 / $60 buy more hours and all models (freebuff.com/plans). Reddit already has posts complaining "didn't you say it was free?" (r/aigamedev).
- Ad products (the revenue source):
- Display ads: pay-per-click, $50 daily minimum, $500 ad credit for the first 30 days (/advertisers).
- Agentic ads: while writing code, the agent recommends advertisers' products to the developer, and with the developer's consent installs the advertiser's SDK directly into the codebase. Invoice-only contracts, from $15,000/mo; they claim a 8% acceptance rate versus about 1% click-through for display ads, and "2,100+ integrations last month" (/advertisers/agentic).
- Engagement: advertisers post an X, LinkedIn, Reddit or GitHub link, from $10 a day, to buy 20 engagements. Users comment on, like, repost or star these posts in the "Earn" task flow and get quota after submitting screenshot proof (/advertisers/engagement).
- Self-reported users: the /live page says "751K total users", with 2,706 online at the time, spread across 59 countries. Top countries by online users: US 838, India 371, Indonesia 117, Canada 116, Australia 92, Germany 78, Philippines 65, Brazil 56 (freebuff.com/live, scraped 2026-11-07).
2. Growth data
| Metric | Data | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Tranco rank | 07-30 502,866 → 08-27 344,170 → 09-17 181,243 → 10-01 118,533 → 10-20 61,520 → 11-05 48,672. The steepest stretch ran from mid-September to mid-October. | traffic library, rank_day |
| CrUX global | 2026-05 top 1M → 06 top 500k → 08 top 100k → 09 top 50k | traffic library, crux_domain |
| CrUX by country | India, Philippines, Vietnam: 07 already in the top 100k, 08 entered the top 50k; Indonesia and Turkey: 08 jumped straight from top 500k to top 50k; Germany 09 entered the top 50k; the US, UK and Brazil only reached the top 100k at 09 | Same as above |
npm freebuff monthly downloads | May 55.8k → June 66.9k → July 78.8k → August 110.8k → September 104.5k → October 104.9k | api.npmjs.org |
npm codebuff monthly downloads | May 60.2k → October 4.6k (users of the old product moved over) | api.npmjs.org |
| GitHub star | 08-29 11,125 → 11-07 13,998, recently gaining about 15–25 per day | github repo_day |
| Tranco for comparable domains (11-05) | opencode.ai 4,607 (climbing from 16,903), cline.bot 11,244 (flat), trae.ai 12,814 (flat), qoder.com 41,037, codebuff.com 206,638, kilocode.ai 563,108 | traffic library |
Where the traffic lands: CLI npm downloads stayed flat at about 8k a month from 100 through October, while the site's Tranco rank doubled 6 times over the same period. So the website growth after September didn't come mainly from the CLI. It came from desktop downloads (all via freebuff.com/api/desktop/download), the web /app and App Builder, login and account pages, the Earn task flow, the advertiser back end, plus 200+ SEO pages. The Android app has only 128 reviews, so it's small. In short, the website plays four roles at once: product entry point, desktop download, quota-earning task hub, and SEO landing page. Current data can't separate how much of the Tranco rise is real coding users versus SEO and task-farming traffic.
3. Competitors
| Competitors | Where | Launched | Scale | How it differs from Freebuff |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Amp Free(Sourcegraph) | CLI / IDE | 2025-10 | Once the best-known ad-funded free agent | 2026-03 removed ads and switched to daily free quota; it was shut down to new users mid-2026, and the company says it won't reopen (bitdoze). Freebuff filled the gap it left. |
| OpenCode (+ Zen free models) | Open source CLI | 2025 | opencode.ai Tranco 4,607, 10 times bigger than Freebuff | Open source, bring your own key, with a few free models; no ads, no engagement farming |
| Gemini CLI | Big-company features | 2025-06 | Google's free quota | Gemini only; big-company subsidy, no ads |
| Trae (ByteDance) / Qoder (Alibaba) | IDE | 2025 | Tranco 13k / 41k, flat or recovering | Big-company-subsidized IDEs, not a CLI or agent bundle |
| Cline / Kilo Code | VS Code extension, open source | 2024–25 | cline.bot 11k flat; kilocode 560k | You bring your own key or top up; they don't offer free inference themselves |
| Claude Code / Codex / Copilot CLI | big tech | 2025 | Mainstream | Subscription required ($20–200/mo); Freebuff's SEO pages go after each of them with "free alternative" posts |
| Lovable / Bolt / Base44 / Replit | Web-based app builders | 2024–25 | Big | Pay-per-quota; Freebuff App Builder pitches "same features, free" (Victor Cheng claims on X "copied every feature in Lovable, bolt, replit, and base44") |
| Clixad | CLI | 2026-07/08(Show HN 2026-08-13) | Very small (HN 4 points) | Copycats: swap prompt-targeted ads for offerwalls (complete tasks or surveys to earn quota), with comparison pages against FreeBuff on their sites |
| ADCode | Desktop IDEs | 2026 | Self-described 11,000 active devs (r/SaaS, elma) | Copycats: share 50% of ad revenue with users |
4. How users came in (growth tactics)
- Paid engagement farming: Earn task flow / bounties (confirmed). Users can use comments, upvotes, reposts and stars on advertiser posts to inflate engagement and earn usage time. Freebuff sells this service to advertisers at $10 per day = 20 engagements. 2026-09-19, and r/ClaudeCode and r/opencode both have PSA posts saying "Freebuff encourages astroturfing on the … subreddit", claiming the account has an "Earn" button, "People are just doing it for credits" (Brave search snippet). Circumstantial evidence: several "Anyone tried freebuff?"-style posts have few upvotes but unusually many comments, e.g. r/vibecoding 20 upvotes / 608 comments, 13 upvotes / 266 comments; r/opencodeCLI 10 upvotes / 199 comments; r/AISEOInsider 4 upvotes / 72 comments; and someone asking "Is freebuff bounties still working??". There is no direct evidence that Freebuff uses Earn for its own promotion (unverified), but users discussing it to earn quota is itself driving traffic to it.
- Programmatic SEO / GEO (confirmed). There are 226 pages under /perspectives: 106 solution-recommendation, 49 listicles, and 195 with lastmod in 2026-10. /blog also has dozens of "The free alternative to X" posts targeting Claude Code, Copilot CLI, Lovable, Figma Make, Google AI Studio and more, one by one (sitemap). robots.txt allows GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot and others, and the /perspectives pages include hints aimed at AI agents, clearly aiming to be cited by AI search. The page wave clustered in October, which matches the Tranco October acceleration.
- YouTube and AI-income creators (confirmed). Julian Goldie SEO promoted it repeatedly on X and YouTube; "Freebuff: This FREE AI Coding Agent is INSANE!" has 23.8k views, plus lots of clickbait videos ("FREE vs $200 AI" 14.9k, "100% Free & Unlimited" 6,361), and they were reposted to r/AISEOInsider and r/PostAI. Whether any were paid partnerships is unverified.
- Founder meme marketing on X (confirmed). First came the "Freebuff launch" post, then around Apr 1 a April Fools' meme post (LinkedIn/X) saying "Codebuff renamed Expensivebuff, 30 agents, 0% cache hit rate", pushing the "free vs expensive" contrast all the way. Victor Cheng (@victorxheng) leans on "fighting a war on paid software".
- Referrals for extra time (confirmed). Hours from referrals and bounties go into the wallet and don't reset daily; on Reddit people ask for referral links to unlock GLM.
- Migrating existing users (confirmed). Codebuff's npm users moved over (codebuff downloads from 60k in May → 4.6 thousand in October); vly.ai's users were folded into Freebuff Web.
- Students and price-sensitive markets (confirmed). There's a dedicated /students landing page; on CrUX, India, the Philippines, Vietnam, Indonesia and Turkey rank above the US in the top 50k.
- Launch platforms (confirmed, but minor impact). PH got 2026-08-14 with 311 votes; Show HN got only 2026-06-17 points with 7, and the HN crowd largely ignored it.
- Paid acquisition: no freebuff.com ads turned up in our ad libraries (not finding them doesn't mean none ran; unverified).
5. Why it took off
- Timing: domestic Flash-tier models have pushed inference cost below $1 per million tokens (saascity), making "ads pay for tokens" work on the numbers for the first time.
- Competitor exits: Amp Free shut down mid-2026, leaving users who now need "real $0". The review site bitdoze states flatly: "For $0 work, FreeBuff is where the actually-free agent tier went".
- Price-sensitive markets moved first: CrUX shows India, the Philippines and Vietnam entering the top 100k in July, a month ahead of the US and UK. In official online counts India ranks second, with Indonesia, the Philippines, Bangladesh and Pakistan all in the top 15.
- Distribution: the Earn task flow has users chasing quota by showing up on Reddit and X, plus 9–October's concentrated wave of 200 SEO/GEO pages and YouTube creator content. The steepest stretch of Tranco (mid-September to mid-October) lines up with the Reddit PSA posts (9-19) and the SEO pages going up in October.
- Resources: YC-backed, with an older repo at 14k stars renamed and inherited, plus the founder's influence built up on Manifold.
- Why users stay: 30 hours a day, no card, no key needed, and "enough" for students and developers in lower-income countries (Reddit feedback: "good for MVPs, not much beyond", and HN comments say the same).
6. Differentiation
The real differentiator isn't agent capability but business model and pricing:
- (a) It's completely free, with advertisers footing the bill rather than a platform subsidy, so in theory it can last long-term;
- (b) The ad format is native to agents: agentic ads let the agent install the SDK into the user's project on the advertiser's behalf, with an acceptance rate of 8%;
- (c) Users' attention and engagement can both be sold, and the same Earn engine is both a revenue source and a growth engine.
Free is the main reason it took off; whether the ad format innovation can keep it alive is still being tested. Paid tiers at $8–60 have already launched and models are being tightened, which shows ads alone aren't enough.
7. Visibility and copycats
- Visibility: circulating in small circles. There's plenty of developer chatter: YC company, 14k stars, a lot of review blogs (saascity, bitdoze, mindstudio, dev.to, Korean edunews), and controversial Reddit threads. But I found no coverage from mainstream tech media like TechCrunch, and revenue hasn't been disclosed (neither TrustMRR nor the founder has shared figures; unverified).
- Copycats have appeared: Clixad (2026-08, offerwall for quota) and ADCode (sharing 50% of ad revenue with users).
- LLM vendors, OpenCode and others are also pushing free quotas themselves, so this space will get more crowded.
8. What to learn from it
- There's a segment of developers who are extremely price-sensitive, and the "ads fund free tokens" model works for them, provided inference cost is low enough (using domestic Flash models).
- Tier quotas by region: expensive models only for paying or US users, cheaper models for other regions, so low-ARPU regions don't drag the economics down.
- Agentic ads: turn ads from "being seen" into "being integrated", priced per acceptance, with unit prices far above display ads.
- Productize user attention and engagement (the Earn task flow): one engine that makes money and drives acquisition. The cost is being called astroturfing, and the Reddit community is starting to push back.
- Programmatic "free alternative to X" SEO plus allowing all AI crawlers, grabbing the recommendation slots in AI search before others do.
9. Still unclear
- Unclear whether the 751K figure is cumulative signups or active users; the Tranco rise can't be split between real usage, SEO pages and Earn task traffic.
- No direct evidence that Freebuff uses Earn to inflate its own Reddit and GitHub stars.
- Whether the YouTube creators' content was paid partnership.
- Whether ad revenue can cover inference costs: paid tiers are live, which suggests it isn't enough yet, but there's no revenue data.
- Whether paid ads were run; our ad libraries show none.
- TikTok search returned no valid results; unverified.
