"It apologized, then kept chatting": AI recruiter Clera impersonated founders in hundreds of thousands of emails and hit $1M+ annual revenue in six months
What it is An AI recruiter that finds jobs for job seekers: candidates chat with the AI about their needs for free, and it introduces them directly to startup founders or CTOs. When a company hires someone, it pays 15% of the first year's base salary.
Why it took off It isn't a better product than its rivals. It's more aggressive at acquiring users: AI impersonates founders to send personalized emails to hundreds of thousands of people, and client job listings are posted under its own name on Ashby and picked up by aggregator sites. A success fee is about $24k per placement, and the money comes back fast.
BHow you could follow this Pick a non-English-speaking country or a vertical role, first sign twenty or thirty companies willing to pay success fees, then run one-on-one outreach to candidates with AI that openly identifies itself. Don't impersonate real people.

Clera is an AI recruiter that finds jobs for job seekers. Candidates use it for free: chat with the AI for two minutes about what you want, and it introduces you directly to founders or CTOs at VC-backed startups. When a company hires someone, it pays 15% of the first year's base salary. The product itself is similar to competitors. What made it take off is an aggressive user-acquisition approach: AI sends "personal emails" to hundreds of thousands of people in the name of a co-founder, and client job listings are posted on its own careers page to collect resumes. Below: how it makes money, where users come from, who's competing for them, what this approach costs, and whether you can follow it.
"It apologized, then kept chatting"
On Apr 6, 2026, an engineer working in Germany, Redowan Delowar, posted on LinkedIn: "Clera's AI agent scrapes your public profile, matches you with jobs, then comes asking for more info. Using AI to match isn't the problem. What's unsettling is that it emails you pretending to be a real person and wants to keep chatting like one... I asked it straight out why it was posing as a human. It apologized, then kept trying to talk to me." The post got 92 reactions and 22 comments.
It isn't an isolated case. On Reddit's r/recruitinghell, someone posted "Clera emailed me pretending to be a private recruiter." They asked whether the sender was the co-founder in person or an AI, and the reply said "I am Clera's AI agent." On r/webdev someone specifically warned people to watch the sending domain clera-match (Jun 1), and r/cscareers had a "Scam alert" thread (Sep 23). Emails are usually signed by co-founder Alexander Farr or Daniel, open by citing your LinkedIn experience, and say "We work with 900 startups and I think they'd love your background."
The months with the loudest backlash were also the months it grew fastest.
What it is, and how it charges
Three German founders (Sebastian Scott, Alexander Farr, Daniel Wintermeyer), now based in San Francisco. The homepage tagline reads: "Stop applying to startups. Start getting introduced." Candidates chat with the AI on the website (or via WhatsApp, iMessage, or email), explain the role they want, the stage of company, and any dealbreakers (like "no crypto, remote only"). Clera matches suitable roles and sends an introduction email to you and the hiring CTO.
On the company side, the pricing page is blunt: "Pay only when you hire, 15% of first-year base salary." The calculator defaults to a $160k base salary, which works out to a $24k fee per placement. Posting roles, reviewing candidates, and using the platform are all free. It's a traditional recruiter's success fee, with AI in place of the recruiter.
High price tags make the money come fast: a few dozen sales means a million dollars. 2026 year in Apr 28, their funding press release said "annualized revenue above $1M within months of launch," while their job posting said "from 0 to $1M+ ARR in 6 months." The same day they announced a $3M pre-seed, led by 1984 Ventures, with Deel's fund and a few angels from OpenAI and LinkedIn following on. These are all self-reported numbers, and we don't know what revenue they make today.
Where the users come from
The homepage now claims 264,116 candidates and 900+ startups. Looking back at its own figures: a job posting from early 2026 said 25k candidates and 130 companies; an April press release said 80k; an early October interview said 220k. That's about tenfold growth in under a year. Website traffic rankings match: around 690k globally at the end of July, rising to 240k from mid-August into early September, flattening in October, then climbing again in late October, reaching 5 to 192k in November. By country, real Chrome users in the US, Germany, Canada, and India entered the top 500k sites in each country, while the Netherlands, Spain, and France newly appeared in the past two months, suggesting email outreach is spreading into those countries (inferred).
Traceable acquisition channels include the following:
| Channel | How it's done | Volume |
|---|---|---|
| AI impersonating founders with cold emails | Matches people from public LinkedIn and GitHub profiles, then sends personal emails signed as a co-founder, with multi-message back-and-forths. Sending domains rotate: clera-match, clera.dev, getblona.com (Blona is the CEO's previous company) | The main channel; most of the pool of hundreds of thousands comes from here (inferred) |
| Client job posts put on their own careers page | Ashby hosts jobs.ashbyhq.com/clera with a stack of "Founding Engineer @ Clera" listings, but the descriptions are actually for other companies. These posts went up between Aug 17 and 29, right when the ranking jumped. Ashby listings get reposted to LinkedIn, Indeed and aggregators, so applicants land in Clera's pool | Second largest, and timing matches the growth spike |
| Product Hunt launch | Apr 28 daily rank #1, weekly rank #2,727 votes, same day as funding news | One-off, mostly aimed at the company side |
| Press releases, interviews, founder LinkedIn | Paid press release wire pickups, Authority Magazine interview | Builds trust with recruiters |
| Free tools | "What are you worth" salary calculator. September launched an MCP so recruiters can search candidates directly inside Claude and ChatGPT, listed in several MCP directories | Small volume |
Worth noting what's missing too: the site has 16 pages total, so SEO is not a channel. The TikTok account gets a few hundred to a thousand views per post. Almost nobody discusses it on X. No major tech outlet has covered it. Whether it runs ads can't be verified from outside (unconfirmed).
Why this one, and why now
- AI outreach is nearly free. A human recruiter sends a few dozen emails a day. AI can send "personalized" emails in the founder's voice to hundreds of thousands of people and keep the conversation going. By 2026, models are good enough that people don't suspect anything until several rounds in.
- The company side has no barrier. No hire, no fee. Founders sign up on the spot. In an interview, a founder self-reported closing 95% of first sales calls. 900 companies' job listings serve as the bait in the emails.
- Job seekers are tired. Tech hiring is still cold, mass applications vanish, and "don't apply, just meet the CTO directly" is appealing.
- Cash comes back fast. One deal at $24k can fund the business without raising money, and then you raise to scale.
Who it's competing with
This niche is already crowded, and the leader isn't this one.
| Competitors | Status | How Clera differs |
|---|---|---|
| Jack & Jill (London) | 2026-09-15 announces $40M Series A, $60M raised total; claims 35–380k candidates, 5,000 companies, roughly 5,000 interviews a month | Same two-sided model with AI agents and referrals, earlier and bigger, takes only 10% |
| Dex (London) | a16z speedrun is out, 2026-04 $5.3M seed | Only senior / AI engineers, more boutique |
| HiringCafe | Core product is a job search engine aggregating listings across the web; 2026-10 raised $6.8M and then added a free AI agent | Has heavy search traffic and job listings from across the web |
| Wellfound (formerly AngelList Talent) | The default entry point for startup jobs, also offers managed hiring with a 15% success fee | Relies on its job board, not proactive outreach |
| Paraform | Recruiter crowdsourcing marketplace | Sides with companies and routes jobs to human recruiters |
| LinkedIn Hiring Assistant | Big-company feature, since 2025 | AI outreach on the recruiter side; the candidate side has no equivalent yet |
Clera's public differentiators ("we represent candidates", "only warm introductions", "chat on WhatsApp") are also claimed by Jack & Jill and Dex. What actually sets it apart is that it sends more emails and posts more jobs than its peers.
Cons
This playbook is building reputational debt. On Reddit, r/cscareers, r/recruitinghell, r/webdev, r/JobScams and r/theprimeagen all have posts with "scam" in the title. Trustpilot shows 4 stars across 90+ reviews, polarized between praise and "100% scam". One complaint: "fake jobs posted on Ashby, and I was signed up without consent." In Oct 19, someone on LinkedIn publicly argued it may violate the US CAN-SPAM Act and California's data protection law. How many of the 264k candidates chose to sign up is unknown from outside.
The candidate-side reputation can take some hits, since the company pays. But if email providers block its domains wholesale, or a regulatory complaint lands, growth would stop abruptly.
If it were you
Bottom line: B. The business is real and the playbook can be copied, but the US-English market is already held by players with tens of millions of dollars, and the best-working tactic carries legal and reputational risk.
Who it's for: people with a network in a non-English market (Germany, Japan, Brazil, India, Southeast Asia) or a vertical (nurses, truck drivers, game artists, hardware engineers). You need to sign 20–50 companies willing to pay a success fee first, then hand the outreach to AI.
Who it's not for: anyone without a single employer on board. In a two-sided market the company side is the hard part. Without jobs, the emails have no bait. Don't go head-on into the US tech startup market either. Jack & Jill takes only 10% and still has $60M in funding.
How to do it: start in one country and one job family. On the company side, pitch "pay 15% only if you hire." On the candidate side, write one-to-one emails with AI. Don't impersonate a real person: the first line should say you are an AI recruiting assistant contacting them on behalf of X's founder. Conversion will be lower, but the business lasts longer. Warm up and monitor sending domains, and include working unsubscribe links.
How to get customers: find candidates from public LinkedIn, GitHub and local job-site profiles, and email them one-to-one. Post signed roles under your name on public pages of hiring systems like Ashby or Greenhouse, and benefit from aggregator reposts (with client consent). On the company side, founders call one company at a time. A Product Hunt launch paired with funding or first-client news gives recruiters something to show.
When: before the first half of 2027. Jack & Jill and HiringCafe have just raised money and will likely expand to other European languages and more job families within a year. If LinkedIn builds a candidate-side agent, the gap narrows.
Signs you've misread it: if you can't sign 20 paying companies within three months, or if disclosing AI identity honestly drops reply rates below what the funnel needs, or if news reports a regulatory penalty against Clera or mass blocking by major inboxes of AI recruiting cold email. Any of these means the business depends on the tactic itself, so don't follow it.

Clera (getclera.com) research report
Research date: 2026-11-07. Data card: Tranco 90 days 647,028 → 191,871 (×3.4), PH launch 2026-04-28 with 727 votes.
One line
Clera is a "candidate-side AI recruiter" built by three German founders (Sebastian Scott, Alexander Farr, Daniel Wintermeyer, now based in San Francisco). Candidates are free: they tell an AI in web chat, WhatsApp, iMessage or email what they want, and Clera introduces them directly to founders or hiring managers at VC-backed startups. When a company hires someone, it pays 15% of first-year base (see /pricing on the site).
Bottom line: what drove the growth isn't product differentiation but an aggressive cold-start distribution machine. AI agents pose as co-founders and send "personal emails" to people matched from public sources like LinkedIn and GitHub (using fallback domains clera-match, clera.dev and getblona.com). On top of that, client roles get posted under "Founding Engineer @ Clera" on Clera's own Ashby careers page, and applications come in through job aggregators. Both channels funnel people to sign up at getclera.com, and the candidate pool grew from 25k to 264k in a few months. The business model is the traditional recruiter success fee, which is why revenue can ramp fast (the company claims $1M ARR, up from 0 in 6 months).
1. Data: how many people see it
- Tranco (traffic library): 2026-07-30 689,461 → 08-20 597,746 → 09-03 347,168 → 09-17 241,451 → 10-15 247,566 (plateau) → 11-05 191,871. Tranco is a 30-day rolling average, so the real traffic jump came from mid-August to early September, with a second climb in late October.
- CrUX (traffic library): not in the global top 1M. Country charts for us, de, ca and in sit in the top 500k tier (us has held steady in the top 500k since 2026-08), nl newly entered the top 500k at 2026-09, es and fr newly entered the top 1M, and gb has been in the top 1M all along. The distribution fits its targets: US startups plus European engineers and Indian job seekers.
- All traffic goes through the web. The sign-up entry point is getclera.com/chat, and conversations can also run over WhatsApp, iMessage or email. We found no standalone app.
- How the user numbers are counted (all self-reported): 2026 Early-year job ads claimed 25k candidates, 130+ companies, 40% monthly growth (Vaia / Start Munich job pages) → 2026-04-28 press release 80k+, 600+ startups (EIN Presswire) → Authority Magazine bio 60k+ / 500+ → 2026-09 MCP directory 210k+ → 2026-10-01 interview 220k+ → the site now says 264,116 candidates, 900+ startups, with sign-up to first-round interview in 8 days.
- Revenue is public: the press release (2026-04-28) says "annualized revenue over $1M within a few months of launch"; a job description says "$6 to $0M+ ARR in 1 months"; Nyne.ai's LinkedIn post says "$1M ARR in five months, zero outside funding"; a Reddit r/buildinpublic post is titled "Crossed $1m ARR doing AI recruiting for startups (in <30 days, #2 on ...)"; ARR.club lists it at $1M. Authority Magazine also says the founder reports a "95% conversion on first sales calls" and "40%+ monthly growth".
- Funding: 2026-04 announced a $3M pre-seed led by 1984 Ventures, with angels from Deel Ventures and OpenAI/LinkedIn/HeyJobs participating (LinkedIn posts, Authority Magazine).
- Media and X: no coverage at the TechCrunch level. What exists is paid or semi-paid: EIN Presswire releases (reprinted by natlawreview), an Authority Magazine interview (2026-10-01), and write-ups from epodcastnetwork, futureTEKnow and scriptbyai. Our X library and x-radar search for "clera/getclera" both return 0 posts, and the HN library has none. The official X account @getclera has very little reach (2026-08-19 posted "2000 roles, some over $300k base"). The official TikTok account @getclera gets a few hundred to a thousand views per video.
- Negative discussion outnumbers positive: r/cscareers and r/CyberSecurityJobs ("Scam alert 'Clera'", 2026-09-23), r/recruitinghell ("Clera emailed me pretending to be a personal recruiter"), r/webdev ("GetClera and clera-match email domain warning", 2026-06-01), r/theprimeagen ("GetClera.com is A16Z's latest scam company", 2026-05-20), r/AgentsOfAI and r/JobScams. On LinkedIn, Redowan Delowar (2026-04), Chris Corridore (2026-02) and Iri Bone (2026-10-19, who says it may violate CAN-SPAM and California data protection law) have all publicly complained, and there are posts on Mastodon too (2025-12). Trustpilot shows 4 stars from about 90–96 reviews, polarized between praise and one-star reviews calling it a "100% scam".
2. Competitors
| Competitors | Form | Launch / scale | How Clera differs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jack & Jill (jackandjill.ai, London) | Web + voice agent | $20M seed in 2025; $40M Series A led by 2026-09-15 Air Street (60M raised in total); 35–380k candidates, 5,000+ companies, about 5,000 interviews a month (TNW, Air Street) | Same "AI referral" model with agents on both sides, but an order of magnitude bigger in scale and funding, with a 10% placement fee. Clera's edge is being cheaper, with more aggressive outreach and a focus only on VC-backed startups. |
| Dex (meetdex.ai, London) | Voice / text AI talent agent | $3.1M pre-seed (2025-04, a16z speedrun), then a $5.3M seed led by 2026-04 (Notion Capital) | Only senior / AI engineers, more boutique. Clera covers engineering, GTM and operations, so it casts a wider net. |
| HiringCafe | Job search engine + free AI talent agent | Launched after a $6.8M pre-seed (2026-10) | Starts as a search engine aggregating job listings from across the web, with lots of SEO traffic built in. Clera only has "exclusive" roles from its own relationships. |
| Paraform | Crowdsourced recruiter marketplace + AI | Has been around for a while, at a large scale | Sells to companies and routes roles to independent recruiters. Clera sits on the candidate side and doesn't use human recruiters. |
| Wellfound (formerly AngelList Talent) Autopilot | Startup job site + success fee | Long-established, the default entry point for startup job seekers | Autopilot also takes a 15% success fee. Clera puts the same model behind AI-driven proactive outreach. |
| Refery, Pin, Mokka, Juicebox and others | AI sourcing / referrals on the company side | Each in the single-digit millions of dollars | Tools or services sold to hirers. Clera's pitch is "representing the candidate". |
| LinkedIn Hiring Assistant / Recruiter | Big-company features | From ¥2025 | Big companies are building AI outreach on the hiring side. No big-company product yet exists as a candidate-side "agent". |
Takeaway: this category is crowded, with heavyweights like Jack & Jill that have raised $60M. Clera is not the first or the largest, and its model is not fundamentally different.
3. Growth tactics (evidence)
- AI-impersonated founder cold emails (main channel, confirmed): several people describe emails signed "Alexander Farr, co-founder of Clera" or "Daniel", citing their LinkedIn profile and saying "we work with 900+ startups, do hundreds of introductions a week, and I think they'd like your profile" (a r/cscareers post excerpted by Brave). Replies went back and forth for several rounds before it became clear it was an AI (posts by Chris Corridore and Redowan Delowar). The sending domains rotate: clera-match, clera.dev and getblona.com (Blona is the CEO's previous company), per an r/webdev post and Trustpilot reviews. Nyne.ai (a data company pitching "people profiles for agents", seed $5.3M) cites Clera as a case study on LinkedIn, which suggests part of Clera's lead data may come from this kind of people-data API (not verified as a customer relationship). In CrUX, in, nl, es and fr are all rising together, consistent with the inference that email is expanding into new countries.
- Client roles posted on its own Ashby careers page (confirmed): jobs.ashbyhq.com/clera lists many "Founding Engineer @ Clera" and "Forward Deployed Engineer @ Clera" roles, but the descriptions actually describe other companies ("agentic integration platform", "an AI company turning architectural drawings and permit files into cost estimates"). The dates cluster in 2026-08-17 ~ 08-29, right when Tranco jumps. Ashby postings get reposted on LinkedIn, Indeed and various job aggregators, and anyone who applies lands in Clera's candidate pool. A Trustpilot reviewer complains "It posts fake roles on Ashby and sign you up to their product without consent". The official /hire page also admits the sources include "Clera's job pages".
- Product Hunt launch (confirmed): #2026-04-28 on the daily chart and #1 on the weekly chart, with 2,727 votes and 242 comments (producthunt library), launched the same day as the $3M funding press release. The homepage has kept the PH badge up ever since.
- Founder LinkedIn and press releases (confirmed): all three founders posted the funding news the same day. The EIN Presswire paid release was reprinted by natlawreview and others, and there's an Authority Magazine interview. The main purpose is building trust with the company side (founders, hiring managers).
- Free tools and MCP (confirmed, small volume): /worth salary calculator (upload a résumé or LinkedIn, get "what you're worth"; the COO promotes it on LinkedIn); 2026-09 launched the Clera MCP (mcp.getclera.com), listed in Glama, Smithery, mcp.so, mcpmarket, skillsdirectory and other directories, so recruiters can search candidates from inside Claude/ChatGPT. The sitemap has only 16 pages, so SEO is not a channel.
- TikTok / X (confirmed, very small): official accounts get a few hundred to a thousand views per post. Not a traffic source.
- Ads: nothing matched in our Meta / Google / TikTok ad libraries (product_domain shows only one PH entry). Ad libraries only track products on our list, so this doesn't mean they aren't advertising (unverified).
4. Why it took off
- Supply side: zero-cost mass outreach with AI calling: a traditional recruiter sends dozens of emails a day, while Clera's agent can send "personalized" emails in the founder's voice to hundreds of thousands of people and keep the conversation going. This is the direct cause of the candidate pool growing 10x in a few months (25k → 264k).
- Demand side: success fees lower the barrier: companies "pay only when they hire," plus a free line, "Candidates already in your pipeline, with proof," so founders sign up right away (self-reported first-call conversion 95%). 900+ VC-backed startups supplied enough open roles to use as bait in the emails.
- Timing: tech hiring in 2026 was still cold, job seekers were fatigued from mass applying, and "no applying, get introduced directly to the CTO" is appealing. LLM agents were also now realistic enough to turn cold emails into signups.
- Money comes back fast: 15% × an average $160k base ≈ $24k per placement, so a few dozen placements reach $1M ARR. That means it can fund itself while bootstrapped, before raising a pre-seed.
5. Differentiation
Its public differentiation is "we represent candidates, not companies," "only roles with a direct relationship, always a warm introduction," and "chatting with you on WhatsApp / iMessage." But Jack & Jill, Dex and HiringCafe say nearly the same thing, and Jack & Jill is earlier and bigger. The real difference is the playbook: more aggressive impersonation outreach and role distribution than peers, not the product experience. So the differentiation isn't why it took off; the distribution playbook is. That same playbook is also building serious reputational debt (Reddit "scam" threads, potential CAN-SPAM and privacy compliance risk).
6. What to borrow
- Two-sided marketplace cold start: on the supply side, AI agents do one-to-one outreach in a human voice (with rotating domains to protect deliverability); on the demand side, "work first, pay on success" lowers the barrier.
- Post the demand-side roles under its own name on public career pages of ATS platforms like Ashby and Greenhouse, getting free applicants from job aggregator distribution.
- PH launch, funding press releases and paid interviews build trust, mainly aimed at B2B buyers.
- MCP directories and free tools like the "salary calculator" serve as low-cost supplementary entry points.
- Lesson: impersonating a human without disclosing AI gets high short-term conversion, but long-term it means the "scam" label on Reddit plus compliance risk. If you copy it, at minimum state in the email that it's an agent.
7. Still unclear
- How many of the 264k candidates signed up themselves, and how many were "registered on their behalf" (there are complaints of being registered without consent).
- The $1M ARR is self-reported, and it's the figure from spring 2026; current numbers are unknown, and the actual number of successful placements has not been disclosed.
- Whether lead data comes from a people-data API like Nyne.ai (only Nyne's promotion of Clera has been seen).
- Whether it runs paid ads (our ad library found no match, which doesn't mean it isn't advertising).
- Whether the second climb that started in late October comes from renewed email volume or from MCP / media coverage.
