One person, hundreds of thousands of Minecraft mods, 1.26M installs: the app is what grew, and the gate is in Google Play
What it is A Minecraft mod catalog: a website plus five free apps that bring mods from CurseForge and Modrinth to your phone and install them into the game in one tap.
Why it took off The first 50k installs came from about 50 Reddit posts over half a year. The later 100+ million, inferred from Google Play: a 4.85 rating with almost no bad reviews, placement in a low-competition casual category that pushed it onto the charts in Latin America and the Philippines, and keyword-stuffed titles.
BHow you could follow Don't build a big catalog. Copy Verity and Horror Hub and do single-theme mod apps. Copy its three store tactics (categories, keyword titles, rating prompts), and show rewarded ads when users tap download.
Global rank 122k · 90 days ago 512k
An indie developer in Ukraine plugged Minecraft mods from CurseForge and Modrinth into an Android app. It had only 50k installs in late August and reached 1.26M by early November. Its website rose 90x in global rank over 4 days, but the app is what grew, and the website rank was carried up by it. Below: what drove the first 50k, where the later 100+ million came from, and whether this old niche is still open.
A post with "I can't really explain why"
2026 年 8 月 29 日,Reddit 用户 u/Sufficient-Cup4705 在 r/SideProject 发帖,标题是「my minecraft mod app hit 50k installs and i still cant explain why it works」(我的 Minecraft 模组 App 到 5 万安装了,我还是说不清它为什么能成)。帖子开头的故事他讲过很多遍:看着表弟在乱七八糟的网站上找模组,要点过 4 层跳转广告,下下来的文件版本还不对,装也不知道怎么装,「以为两周能搞定,三个月后才有点样子」。
Two months later, on 29 Oct, the app (MC Bedrock Mods for Minecraft, credited to developer Artem Lashkul) had 1.16M cumulative installs on Google Play. By 7 Nov it reached 1.26M, with a 4.85-star rating and 26k ratings (Google Play data, 11-07).
What it is: one website, five apps
mcmodshub.com is the front door. It turns mods from CurseForge and Modrinth into pages search engines can find: about 360k Java mods and 54k Bedrock (mobile / console) mods, plus install guides and troubleshooting pages in several languages. Every page has a button that jumps to Google Play.
Behind it are five free apps: the flagship Bedrock mod app (1.26M installs), a Java mod app (100k+), a skin editor (10k+), an anime wallpaper app, and an iOS version of Addonaut launched by Sep 25 (16 ratings in the US store). None of the content is made in-house. It pulls from the public APIs of two sources. Users tap download, watch a rewarded ad first, and the file is handed straight to Minecraft for import. People who don't want ads can make a one-time in-app purchase to remove them, for $0.49–9.99.
Why the website's rank rose 4x
Its global Tranco rank was ~90k 510 days ago, ~30k 180 days ago, and ~122k now. It looks like a website taking off. It isn't.
The app's catalog API, images, and file downloads all run through api.mcmodshub.com and files.mcmodshub.com, which share the main site's domain. Three of Tranco's data sources count DNS lookups. Installs went from 50k to 1.26M, and every time someone opens the app on their phone it looks up this domain, so the rank climbed with it. The panel that tracks real Chrome users (the Chrome user-experience bucket) stayed at the "top 1M globally" bucket from July to September and never moved. The only changes showed up in a few countries: Mexico entered the top 100k in August, and the Philippines entered the top 100k in September.
The site owner wrote their own traffic figures in a robots.txt comment. On Aug 12, the whole site got 290k requests in one day, and 72% of them came from Meta and OpenAI training crawlers. Bing crawled 7,186 times that same day and sent 522 visitors. At that scale, the web version gets a few thousand real visitors a day (inferred). Against 1.26M installs, that's a small slice.
First 50k: about 50 posts on Reddit over half a year
From Apr 9 to Oct 24, the account posted about 50 times, roughly two or three posts a week, in r/MCPE, r/minecraftbedrock, r/fabricmc, r/CurseForge, r/ModdedMinecraft, r/SideProject, r/IndieDev and others, including posts in Ukrainian and Portuguese. The formula was nearly fixed: "I'm a developer" + "my kid is finding mods on sketchy sites" + "looking for feedback" + "link in the comments," with the link carrying the tracking parameter utm_source=reddit.
In a retrospective post from one phase, he wrote: "Reddit has been my best acquisition channel by far," supposedly accounting for about 60% of installs.
The approach works, but it's crude. The kid in the story is sometimes a cousin, sometimes a nephew or younger brother, sometimes "my child." One post says 5-30k users, another says 17 and 6-05 and 1,700. A June post says "free, no ads," but the app does show rewarded ads. Two Portuguese posts in the Brazilian subreddit pose as ordinary people asking questions: "Brazil is one of the countries using the most Bedrock mods, where do you all find them? ... I saw an Android mod app a few days ago" (r/minecraftbrasil, 5-08). Several anime wallpaper posts promoted the app without disclosing he made it, and those have since been removed. What readers should take from this is the frequency and reach, not the invented stories: once exposed, the account is finished.
The extra 100-plus million: three switches in the stores
From late August to late October, installs grew by about 1.1M. Reddit posts drew tens to hundreds of upvotes, which doesn't explain a number that size. What can be seen are three settings in the stores (what follows is inference, with no direct evidence):
Almost no one leaves a bad rating. By Oct 29, of its 23,641 ratings, the one- and two-star counts were both 0, three-star count 1,296, and the rest were four and five stars. The first one-star rating only appeared in Nov 2 (Google Play ratings distribution, 154~10-29 to 11-07). None of the established apps in the same niche look like this. Mods & Skins for Minecraft PE has 68k one-star ratings, and MCPEDL has 4,800. The most likely explanation is that the app's rating prompt asks "Do you like it?" first, sends people who tap "yes" to the store, and routes people who tap "no" to a feedback form (inference). Google's policies discourage this, but it's common. The result is a 4.85 rating, the highest in the niche. Others typically sit at 4.1–4.6.
Listed under "Casual Games." Competitors are mostly under "Tools" or "Entertainment." It chose GAME_CASUAL, which put it into the casual games free charts in Brazil (#118–#150), Mexico, Argentina, and the Philippines (#150–#195). That added chart exposure (Google Play charts, 10-29~11-07). Mexico and the Philippines are exactly the two countries where web Chrome users moved into the top 100k bucket.
Keyword-stuffed title. "MC Bedrock Mods for Minecraft," with MCPE in the store subtitle. In an April post, he said the first month brought only 200 downloads. The problem was "bad screenshots and a poorly written store page." Conversion only improved after he rewrote them.
The biggest unknown is whether he bought paid acquisition. Rewarded ads at the download step could easily cover the cost of Google app-promotion ads per user. Nothing visible shows he spent on ads, but not seeing it doesn't mean he didn't.
Where the money comes from
Rewarded ads plus a one-time ad-removal purchase. No public revenue figures. He has only said AdMob revenue "covers hosting." The users are mainly kids in Brazil, Mexico, the Philippines, and Indonesia, so the ad value per user is low, and the money comes from volume.
Who it's competing with
This is one of the oldest and most crowded businesses on Google Play, and newcomers keep joining. At least 8 Minecraft mod apps launched within the last year have passed a million installs. mcmodshub ranks #5, and its growth isn't especially fast.
| Competitors | Scale (Google Play installs, 11-07) | How it differs |
|---|---|---|
| Mods & Skins for Minecraft PE(Lyxoto) | 111M | Old-school mod app factories that started around 2018 years ago |
| Addons for Minecraft Mods(lordix) | 47.9M, 7 days +210k | Veteran app, listed under Tools |
| MCPEDL for Minecraft(Overwolf) | 28.7M, 7 days +167k | The Bedrock mod leader, with its own submission community and website |
| Verity Mod for Minecraft PE | 4.11M, 7 days +176k | Launched 137 days ago. One app per popular mod, which is faster |
| Horror Hub: Mods for Minecraft | 2.5M | Same age, horror-themed only |
| Furniture Mods for MCPE | 1.79M | Same age, furniture-only |
| CurseForge / Modrinth | Web, global rank roughly #1,000 / #3,300 | The source of the content, but you can't import Bedrock mods in one tap on a phone |
Two things stand out. First, the demand pool is huge, and a new app that is good enough can win a share of it. Second, mcmodshub's much-touted "differentiation" (only official sources, breaking 46k mod packs down to analyze dependencies, five apps plus a website) didn't drive its growth. Single-niche clone apps of the same age never did any of that and still got more installs.
The website track: very detailed, but not the growth engine
A few parts of the website setup are worth copying. Search traffic comes mostly from Bing, and Google rarely crawls the site (it crawled 14.6 times in 294 hours). He wrote an llms.txt for AI assistants, blocked training crawlers like GPTBot and meta-externalagent, and allowed crawlers that send people over, like ChatGPT search and Perplexity. In robots.txt he recorded that the ChatGPT channel brought 1,736 installs over three months (9-05 stats), making it the fastest-growing install source. The same comment also says that on Aug 12, all AI services combined brought only two real people. 1,736 installs is a rounding error against 1.26M.
If it were you
Verdict: Worth testing, but don't expect to win with a "better mod directory." This business is decided by store execution, and this niche has been crowded for years.
Who it suits: Android developers or small studios that have done Google Play store optimization, know how to integrate rewarded ads, and are willing to ship several apps a month. Comfortable with low-priced markets and making money on volume.
Who it doesn't suit: People building sticky products meant to earn subscriptions, people who only build websites and not apps, and people who are sensitive to copyright and platform-policy risk.
How to do it:
- Don't build a big all-in-one directory. Verity and Horror Hub show that single niches (one popular mod, horror, furniture, guns, anime) build traction faster as one app each, and one base can be cloned into many.
- Flip the three switches it used: pick a less competitive category, put "Mods for Minecraft / MCPE" in the title, and prompt for a rating right when the user has just gotten a mod working.
- Put the rewarded ad at the "tap download" moment, when the user wants it most.
- Before you connect to the CurseForge or Modrinth APIs, read their terms on third-party distribution, then Mojang's brand rules (whether you can use "Minecraft" in the name).
How to get users: Cold-start with the same frequency it used, on Reddit, Discord, and small YouTube channels, but under your real name and a real story. Scale through store search and charts, and write separate store pages for Portuguese, Spanish, and Indonesian.
When to move: There's no clear window. This is a permanent business, and new apps appear every quarter. The few weeks after a major Minecraft update or when a popular mod drops are when new-niche apps most easily gain traction.
Signs you've misread it: A new app stuck at a few dozen installs a day after two months; the rating prompt gets flagged by Google as a policy violation and the app is pulled; or CurseForge / Modrinth tighten their APIs so third parties can't distribute files. Any one of these and the approach doesn't hold.

Research date 2026-11-07. Data comes from our traffic / googleplay databases, the website (including robots.txt and llms.txt), the Google Play listing, and the founder's Reddit posts (read via RSS).
One line
A solo indie developer from Ukraine (Artem Lashkul, Reddit account u/Sufficient-Cup4705) built a Minecraft mod directory: the site turns hundreds of thousands of mods from CurseForge and Modrinth into indexable pages, then funnels traffic to 4 Android apps and 1 iOS apps. The main driver is the Android app "MC Bedrock Mods for Minecraft" (com.mcmodshub.app), listed on 2026-03-21, with 1.26M cumulative installs worldwide. Most of the traffic comes from the app, not the web. The rise in Tranco rank is mostly driven by backend domain lookups from app installs growing; the website itself only grew modestly.
1. Data: what actually grew

|---|---|---|
| Tranco rank | 90 days ago 512,117 → 30 days ago 182,572 → now 122,011; 10-01 188,272, 10-15 174,028, 11-01 120,012 | traffic.rank_day |

Why Tranco rose so much. The current Tranco list uses 5 data sources: crux, farsight, majestic, radar, and umbrella (traffic.tranco_list). Farsight, Cloudflare Radar, and Cisco Umbrella all measure DNS query volume. api.mcmodshub.com, files.mcmodshub.com, and the main domain resolve to the same set of Cloudflare IPs (per dig), and the app's directory API and image/file downloads all go through this registrable domain. Installs went from 50k in July to 1.26M in November, DNS query volume rose with them, and Tranco rose too. Over the same period, the CrUX global tier stayed flat at "top 1M," meaning web traffic itself grew only slightly. The card's flag "often the app backend" holds up here.
Web traffic itself. The only scale figures available are a few lines the site owner wrote in comments in robots.txt:
- 2026-08-12 the whole site gets 289,637 requests in a day, of which 72% come from AI training crawlers like meta-externalagent and GPTBot;
- "Bing sends us most of our search traffic": the Bing crawler makes 7,186 requests a day and brings 522 visitors; Googlebot rarely visits (it crawled only 294 times in 14.6 hours);
- "The ChatGPT channel brought 1,736 installs over three months (2026-09-05 tracking), making it the fastest-growing install source," which is why the owner built llms.txt.
At these volumes, the website gets only a few thousand real human visitors a day, a small contributor to 1.26M installs.
2. Competitors
This niche is the oldest and most crowded "Minecraft mod app" business on Google Play, mostly made in bulk by white-label studios.
| Competitors | Where | Launched | Scale | How mcmodshub differs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| CurseForge(Overwolf) | Web / desktop | Around 2006 | Tranco ~971 | The source of content; has creator revenue sharing, but on phones you can't import Bedrock mods in one click |
| Modrinth | Web / open source | 2020 | Tranco ~3,299 | The source for Java mods; the phone experience is poor |
| MCPEDL (mcpedl.com, also app com.overwolf.mcpedl) | Web + Android | Website for many years; app about 2022 | Website Tranco ~15,800; app 28.7M installs, +167k over 7 days | The Bedrock mod leader, owned by Overwolf, with its own submission community; mcmodshub only aggregates |
| Lyxoto "Mods & Skins for Minecraft PE" | Android | About 2018 | 111M installs | Veteran mod app factory |
| lordix "Addons for Minecraft Mods" | Android | About 2019 | 47.9M installs, 7-day +210k | Same as above |
| Verity Mod for Minecraft PE(I13) | Android | 137 days ago | 4.11M installs, 7-day +176k | Makes one app per popular mod, faster than mcmodshub |
| Horror Hub: Mods for Minecraft(ar-technolge) | Android | 253 days ago | 2.5M installs | Same age, same horror theme, more installs |
| Furniture Mods for MCPE(PunchMine) | Android | 262 days ago | 1.79M installs | Single-theme apps |
| Verity Mod(GROWTHBRIDGE CONSULTING) | Android | 80 days ago | 1.23M installs | Reached the same scale in 80 days |
| 9minecraft.net | Web | Years | Tranco ~40,900 | Old SEO reposting site with lots of fake download buttons; mcmodshub uses it as a negative comparison |
| Minecraft Marketplace(Mojang) | Big-company features | 2017 | Built into the game | Official paid content, does not accept third-party free mods |
(Installs from googleplay.app_profile 11-07, Tranco from traffic.rank_day 11-01)
Key finding. At least 8 new apps in this niche reached one million installs within a year; mcmodshub ranks 5 (in the googleplay database, apps listed within 365 days, with Minecraft/MCPE in the title and 300k+ installs: 14 total). In other words, demand for searches like "minecraft mods" on Google Play is very large, mainly from kids in Brazil, Mexico, the Philippines, and Indonesia, and new apps with decent quality can get a share. mcmodshub's growth rate is not standout in this niche (7 days +65k; Verity +176k).
3. Growth tactics (where users come from)
- Frequent self-promotional Reddit posts (confirmed, the early main channel). u/Sufficient-Cup4705 posted roughly 50 times from 2026-04-09 to 10-24, almost 2–3 posts a week, in r/MCPE, r/minecraftbedrock, r/SideProject, r/IndieDev, r/fabricmc, r/CurseForge, r/ModdedMinecraft, r/MCPEMods and more, including Portuguese posts ("o brasil é um dos países que mais usa mods no bedrock") and Ukrainian posts. Links carry UTM parameters, for example
utm_source=reddit&utm_medium=sideproject. The formula is: "I'm a developer + my kid is finding mods on sketchy sites + looking for feedback + link in the comments."- The story and numbers don't match. The family member is sometimes a cousin, sometimes a nephew, a kid brother, or my kid; 5-30's posts say 17,000 users, then 6-05 says 1,700; one May post claims 12k installs and "a few YouTubers mentioned it unprompted," another says 8k; "hit 50k installs" and 7-19's "50k bedrock" repeat each other 8-29. The posts also say "free, no ads," but the app shows rewarded ads. Another post, "decent anime wallpaper app I've been using," doesn't disclose it's the developer's own app, and is likely a funnel for PixWall. Taken together, this looks like a batch of promotional posts, possibly rewritten with AI.
- Founder's own account: "Reddit has been my best acquisition channel by far" and "brought maybe 60% of my installs" (referring to the 17k-user stage).
- Google Play store search and charts (inferred as the main channel during the scale-up phase, with no direct evidence). From late August to late October, installs rose by about 1.1M. A Reddit post with a few dozen to a few hundred upvotes can't explain that scale. The visible levers are:
- A rating of 4.85, the highest in the niche; competitors are typically 4.1–4.6.
- It is listed under GAME_CASUAL (Casual Games), while competitors are mostly in TOOLS / ENTERTAINMENT. That lets it into the Casual Games Top Free chart in Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, and the Philippines, ranking 120–190, which gives it an extra chart exposure. These four countries are exactly the ones entering CrUX's top tiers.
- The title is packed with keywords (MC Bedrock Mods for Minecraft / MCPE); the founder says "store listing matters more than I thought," and conversion went up after rewriting the screenshots and description.
- It has 26,287 ratings but only 259 written reviews (1.0%), suggesting most ratings come from the in-app rating prompt and may include incentivized reviews. Note: competitor Lyxoto is 0.5% and Verity is 0.2%, which is normal for mod apps, so this alone is not proof of rating manipulation.
- Programmatic SEO on the site funneling to the app (confirmed, small volume). The sitemap includes 360k Java and 54k Bedrock mod pages, plus multilingual install tutorials, troubleshooting pages (such as "Unable to find manifest in pack"), and Top 20 list blogs. Every page links to Play with
utm_source=mcmodshub_web. The main search source is Bing (per robots.txt comments). - LLM / ChatGPT recommendations (confirmed, self-reported by the site owner). 1,736 installs over three months; the owner wrote llms.txt, letting AI search crawlers in while blocking training crawlers.
- YouTube creators mentioning it unprompted (unverified). Only appears in one Reddit post.
- Paid acquisition (not found). Our ad library does not track this domain (the card's ads field is empty), but that doesn't mean they didn't spend. The download-time rewarded ads monetization can fully support Google App Campaign buys, which is the biggest unknown.
4. Why it took off
- Demand side: Installing mods on Bedrock on a phone is a hassle. Traditional channels are sites like 9minecraft, full of fake download buttons, and .mcpack/.mcaddon files must be imported manually. The main users are kids in Brazil, Mexico, the Philippines, and Indonesia (the countries newly entering CrUX and the chart countries). This demand has always existed; it is not new.
- Supply side: No need to create content yourself. Connect directly to the public APIs of CurseForge and Modrinth, and one person can build a directory of "hundreds of thousands of mods."
- Retention / monetization: One-click download, and after downloading the file is handed off automatically to Minecraft for import. Rewarded ads are shown at the moment of download, when user intent is strongest; the founder says conversion has been "surprisingly well."
- Scaling: The first 50k installs were pushed hard through Reddit. After that, a high rating, the casual games category, and keyword titles created a positive loop into Google Play search and charts (inferred).
5. Differentiation
Compared with the veteran mod app factories, it differs in these ways:
- It only aggregates real works from CurseForge/Modrinth and does not repackage files of unknown origin. This plays to a "safety" narrative, repeated throughout the Reddit posts.
- Opened 46k mod archives, parsed the manifest, can point out which dependency is missing, whether it's just a texture pack or just a behavior pack, and wrote those up as troubleshooting content.
- Built five apps on the same base: Bedrock, Java, skins, wallpapers, and iOS. The website serves as the main entry point, and they ran two versions.
- It has its own mods (the Gloamer series) and a "Setups" bundle pack.
Is this what made it take off? Mostly not. Same-age apps like Verity, Horror Hub, and Furniture Mods are single-theme white-label apps without any of these differentiators, yet they got more installs. What actually worked was a higher rating (4.85) plus choosing the less crowded casual games category. "Safe, from official sources" was mainly Reddit promo copy that helped it win its first users early. The website and LLM work is very detailed, but the install numbers it shows are in the thousands, not the source of this growth.
6. How many people have seen it
- No public revenue (no TrustMRR listing, the founder only said AdMob "covers hosting"), no media coverage, and x-radar finds no hits for the domain in the last 90 days. Searching mcmodshub on TikTok returns 0.
- Its only exposure is Reddit posts the founder made himself, so it counts as "spreading within a small circle."
- Copycats: I haven't seen anyone specifically copying it. But this niche is already crowded with mod app factories, and a new million-install app shows up every year.
7. Takeaways
- Host the app's backend under the website domain. When app installs go up, Tranco/DNS rank goes up with them. Conversely, anyone analyzing this must not treat a Tranco climb as website traffic.
- In the large, established Google Play category, raising the rating and switching to a less competitive category gets you chart exposure directly. mcmodshub chose GAME_CASUAL instead of TOOLS.
- Put rewarded ads at the moment users are about to get something.
- Cold start with a Reddit posting matrix. Multiple subreddits, multiple languages, persona backstories, links placed in comments, tagged with UTM. It works, but the narrative is inconsistent across posts, and there's a risk of being exposed.
- Website playbook: programmatic SEO aimed at Bing; an llms.txt to attract ChatGPT recommendations; blocking training crawlers while keeping AI search crawlers that send people in; and turning "facts from opening and parsing files" into content AI is willing to cite. The whole setup is very detailed and worth copying.
8. Still unclear
- Where the roughly 1.1M installs from late August to late October actually came from: whether it ran Google App Campaigns, whether it was pushed by Play editors' recommendations or "similar apps," and whether there were YouTube/TikTok creator videos (none found on TikTok search).
- The install numbers in the Reddit posts contradict each other, so the real install count from 7 to August is uncertain. All we know is that 10-29 it had already reached 1.16M.
- Whether it prompts for good reviews (filtering in the rating dialog) cannot be confirmed.
- Copyright risk: it redistributes CurseForge files and images, and the authors receive no download revenue share. CurseForge's API terms restrict third-party distribution, so there is a takedown risk (specific terms not verified).
- No revenue data at all.
