The night the official app was hacked, what Ukrainians installed: a drone map with "no radar of its own"
What it is A live Ukrainian air-attack map: it turns messages from Telegram monitoring channels into drone and missile markers on the map with direction and confidence, using AI. The website is free; the app makes money from ads and subscriptions.
Why it took off Air attacks hit records in autumn 2026, the official app only reported alerts without movement, and when it was hacked offline in Nov 1, demand flowed to alternatives. It grabbed terms like "alert map" earlier than its peers, through keyword landing pages and store titles.
CHow you could follow Don't build another one in Ukraine. Take the approach of "public sources + AI structuring + confidence labels," and "website for search, app for push and monetization," to another live-risk scenario where the official tool only says whether there's a threat, not where, and claim the keywords before the seasonal peak.
Global rank 11k · 90 days ago 91k
NEPTUN, a Ukrainian air-attack map built by one person, uses AI to assemble messages from 89 Telegram monitoring channels into a live map. Its website climbed from 90k to 90k in global ranking over 11 days, and its app reached 1.25M installs on Google Play. Its traction came from escalating fighting, a gap left by the official app, and a solid search and store playbook. The playbook is learnable, but this niche is already too crowded to catch up.
Several false alarms in the night of Nov 1
On a Sunday night in Nov 2026, 1, Kyiv resident Olena's phone lit up with a nuclear attack alert. The official air-raid alert app that almost everyone in Ukraine uses had been hacked that night, pushing red alerts nationwide, and pushing radiation, chemical attack, and street-fighting warnings to some users in Kyiv and elsewhere. She later told the BBC: "My first thought was, oh my god, I'm not prepared for this one. I'm prepared for power cuts, no heating, no water, but not nuclear." It wasn't until her husband received an alert written in Russian that she realized the app had been broken into. Ukraine's Air Force posted a statement on Telegram saying "there is no radiation threat," and the government then temporarily took the app offline (BBC, 11-01).
Over the next few days, an app on the App Store called "Карта тривог - Dron Alerts" saw its daily new ratings jump from about 100 to 340–505. It ranked #2 on the free overall chart in the Ukraine store and #1 in Utilities. The official app ranked #41 over the same period (App Store Ukraine, 11-06).
That app is NEPTUN.
What it is
The website neptun.in.ua is a live threat map: it marks Shahed drones, cruise missiles, ballistic missiles, and KAB guided bombs, and each marker shows its type, which district it's in, confidence (low, medium, high), how many sources confirm it, and when it was last updated. When confidence is high enough, it also draws heading arrows. The site is free, has no ads, and requires no sign-up, refreshing every 5 seconds.
Its About page is blunt: "NEPTUN has no radar of its own." Everything on the map comes from 89 public Telegram channels (2 official, 2 reconnaissance, 64 local, 21 aggregators), plus the official alert API. AI breaks text messages from the channels into "what, where, and which direction it's heading." When several channels report the same event, confidence goes up. The sources page also lists which 4 oblasts have no independent observers, and explains why it won't pad the count with channels that just repost official alerts: "That would mean inventing a 'second source confirmation' for yourself, making you see more certainty than actually exists." In a niche where everyone claims to be "the most accurate," writing down your blind spots is itself the selling point.
The companion app is where the real battle is: it's called "Ukraine Alert Map: Dron Alerts" on Google Play and "Карта тривог - Dron Alerts" on iOS, listed at the end of January 2026. The app has ads, a PRO subscription removes them, and there are extras like family circles, SOS, and multi-location alerts, with in-app purchases on Play ranging from $2.79 to $11.99. The latest version added chat rooms and a "GPS signal jammed" notice, starting to build toward community and retention. The developer on the store is an individual, Володимир Малік; the website calls it a "team," and how many people are actually involved is unverified.
Why this autumn
Demand was bombed into existence. In October 2026, Russia launched 8,740 Shaheds in a single month, with over 4,000 of them jet-powered (Kyiv Independent). After an attack of 20 drones on the night of Oct 165, NEPTUN gained 68k installs on Play in one day, while its most direct rival RadarUA gained 79k the same day. The entire "where are the drones" category rose together.
The official app only tells you "there's an alert," not "what's flying where." The official app has been the de facto standard since 2022 (17.6M installs on Play), but for a long time it only reported "alert in this oblast." Telegram channels carry movement information, but as a stream of text. NEPTUN sits between the two. The official side only added a movement map in October 17, drawing only rough areas, not in real time, and excluding ballistic missiles (DOU, 10-17); two weeks later came the hack.
The numbers match these events:
| Timeline | Website global ranking (Tranco) | Timeline | Play cumulative installs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jul 30 | 91,555 | Aug 1 | 325k |
| Sep 3 | 89,288 | Sep 1 | 456k |
| Sep 17 | 41,673 | Oct 1 | 714k |
| Oct 15 | 19,596 | Oct 21 | 1.02M |
| Nov 5 | 11,328 | Nov 5 | 1.25M |
From September, Play daily installs jumped from a few thousand to 1–40k, and in the last 7 days added another 85k. The site's ranking still moves up two or three hundred places a day, now nearly catching alerts.in.ua (around 9,400th), which has been around for four years. In Chrome real-user data, it rose globally from the top 50k tier to the top 5k tier; in Poland from the top 100k tier to the top 10k tier, and it's also rising in Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, and Turkey. Much of this is likely Ukrainians abroad checking on home on the web, and the domestic bulk of traffic is not visible in this data.
Where users come from
Timing is shared by everyone. What NEPTUN did better than its rivals comes down to a few things:
- One landing page per search term. The site has a batch of landing pages like karta-tryvoh (alert map), karta-shahediv (Shahed map), radar-shahediv and tryvoga-zaraz (is there an alert now), and the homepage FAQ covers every variant of "карта тривог" and "повітряна тривога зараз". This year, 5 and June also published a batch of long explainers like "the two-walls principle", "what is KAB", and "how long does a Shahed take to reach your city". Search "карта шахедів онлайн найкраща" (best online Shahed map) and neptun.in.ua ranks in the top two.
- The website feeds the app. Every page of the site carries an install banner with utm-tagged links. The site is free and ad-free and builds trust; push, ads and subscriptions live in the app.
- The store name is the keyword. On iOS the app is literally named "Карта тривог" (alert map) and sits in Utilities, where it reached #1 in the category.
- Free API in exchange for attribution. It offers a free REST API, WebSocket, JS SDK and embeddable widget, on the condition that "NEPTUN" is visibly credited on the page. A map called KUPOL already credits NEPTUN's public API as its data source.
- Social media barely contributed. The TikTok account @neptun_ukr posted two videos in 2025 June, getting 228k and 40k views, and hasn't posted since. Almost nothing turns up on X or mainstream media. I didn't find evidence of paid acquisition, but it can't be ruled out.
One thing looks off: on Play, 29k ratings are all 5 stars with no written reviews, while similar apps usually average around 4.6. It could be a data-scraping artifact, or there may be prompted five-star ratings. Unverified.
Who it's competing with
| Product | Scale | How NEPTUN differs |
|---|---|---|
| Повітряна тривога (official, Ajax + Ministry of Digital Transformation) | Play 17.6M installs; website Tranco 7,416 | The standard for alert push notifications; a rough movement map was added in Oct 17, and was hacked in Nov 1 |
| alerts.in.ua | Tranco about 9,400; app 690k installs | A long-running alert map focused on alert status and cause |
| RadarUA | Launched 2026-06-23, Play 1.04M, last 7 days +139k; iOS Ukraine overall chart #10 | Nearly identical features, plus a 24-hour YouTube livestream. Its app growth has caught up with or passed NEPTUN's, but the website is far behind (Tranco about 71k) |
| Neboskhyl, Dronar, Sych, КОНТУР, Air Alert Radar, KUPOL | Neboskhyl hit #25 on the iOS Ukraine overall chart; the others have dozens to hundreds of ratings | A wave of copycats that flooded in from 8 to October |
| Deshahed | 688k cumulative visitors, site now shut down | A volunteer project that announced its "mission accomplished" once the official map launched |
RadarUA shows the problem: nearly identical features, and four months in it still reached a million installs. Features aren't the moat; what decides who leads is who owns the search terms and store keywords first. NEPTUN wins on the website (its ranking is over 6 times RadarUA's) and on iOS rankings, while the app's install count has already been matched.
What you can learn
- Public sources + AI structuring + stating how confident you are. It turns the live text scattered across Telegram, X and government announcements into a map and alerts, and publishes its sources and blind spots. This approach isn't limited to war.
- The website handles search, the app makes money. One landing page per term, plus long-tail explainer articles; the website carries no ads, and each page has an install banner that pushes people into the app.
- Free API in exchange for attribution. Other developers build products on your data and, along the way, send you backlinks and brand exposure.
- Claim the terms before the event. In the days when demand spiked (air-raid waves, official app outages), the biggest winners were those already ranking in search and stores, not those who launched during those days.
If it were you
Verdict: Don't build another drone map for Ukraine. The official side has added a movement view, RadarUA and a dozen copycats are already in the space, and demand is tied entirely to the war, so it will drop the day a ceasefire lands. What's worth taking is the playbook, not the niche.
Who it suits: People who know a high-frequency, real-time risk scenario well and speak the local language, for example countries around a war zone, earthquake belts, wildfire season or typhoon season, especially where official local tools only say "yes/no" and not "where, and which way it's heading".
Who it doesn't suit: People who have no local sources and just want to translate this product, or people who can't handle demand swinging wildly with the news.
How to do it: Find a scenario where there's a gap between official alerts and grassroots sources, plug in public channels, use AI to break them into structured events, and flag confidence and blind spots. Build a free, ad-free website with keyword pages first, then build the app that handles push notifications.
How to acquire users: Local-language landing pages for search terms and keyword-rich store titles, plus a free API in exchange for attribution. Don't count on social media; NEPTUN didn't rely on it either.
When to get in early: Claim the terms before the next seasonal peak, say one to two months before wildfire or typhoon season starts. Launching after the event means you only get what's left.
Signs you've got it wrong: The official app in your chosen scenario already offers real-time, district-level data with direction; or three months after launch your landing pages still don't make the top ten for core terms.

NEPTUN (neptun.in.ua): a Ukrainian air-strike and drone map that shows "what's flying where"
Research date 2026-11-07. Channel: web (pool C1, matched to Google Play com.neptunalarm.neptun_alarm_app).
Bottom line
NEPTUN is a Ukrainian real-time air-strike threat map built by indie developer Володимир Малік (website + Android/iOS app). It uses AI to parse messages from 89 Telegram monitoring channels into map markers for "Shahed / missile / KAB", with direction and confidence, layered on top of official alerts. It took off in 2026 9–October, mainly because of demand-spike timing (record Russian autumn strikes, 2026-10 Shaheds in a single month 8,740) + the gap where the official app only says "where the alert is", not "what's flying where", plus a funnel of keyword landing-page SEO and website-to-app traffic. The differentiation (multi-source cross-checking, confidence/source counts, direction arrows, district-level detail, open API) is real, but there are plenty of similar products. What put it ahead is more timing and the SEO and store playbook than any unique capability.
1. What it is
- Website neptun.in.ua: a free, ad-free, no-sign-up real-time threat map. Each marker shows its type, district, confidence (low/medium/high), number of confirming sources and last update time, and shows a heading arrow at medium/high confidence. Data: 89 Telegram channels (2 official, 2 reconnaissance, 64 regional, 21 aggregators) plus the official alert API; occupied-territory borders from DeepState. The site says AI parses the messages, refreshes every 5 seconds, and pushes via SSE. Sources: homepage, about, data sources (updated 2026-11-03).
- App: Google Play "Ukraine Alert Map: Dron Alerts" and App Store "Карта тривог - Dron Alerts" (id6758108122,2026-01-30 listed). The app has ads; PRO subscription removes ads and adds features (Play in-app purchase $2.79–$11.99; the card notes PRO includes family circle/SOS/multiple locations). The latest version 3.3.0 added chat (reading is free, posting requires phone verification, voice requires PRO) and a electronic-warfare "GPS is lying" alert, pushing toward community and retention.
- Open API: free REST + WebSocket + JS SDK + embeddable widget, requiring visible "NEPTUN" credit (developers, 2026-07-09). A third party (KUPOL, kupol.in.ua) already builds its map directly on the API.
2. Data: how big it is and when it took off
Website (traffic library)
| Date | Tranco rank |
|---|---|
| 2026-07-30 | 91,555 |
| 2026-09-03 | 89,288 |
| 2026-09-17 | 41,673 |
| 2026-10-01 | 26,546 |
| 2026-10-15 | 19,596 |
| 2026-11-05 | 11,328 |
The inflection came in mid-to-late September (Tranco is a 30-day rolling average; real traction started around late August to early September). It's still climbing about 200–300 ranks per day, and hasn't stopped. For comparison: alerts.in.ua 9,390 and ukrainealarm.com 7,416 are both holding steady, so NEPTUN's site is now close to the established top tier. CrUX global: 2026-07 top 50k → 08 top 10k → 09 top 5 thousand (same tier as alerts.in.ua and ukrainealarm.com). Country tier: Poland top 50k → top 10k; Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and Turkey top 500k → top 100k; US entered top 500k. CrUX has no Ukrainian country list, so the overseas gains mostly reflect diaspora users (Poland has the largest Ukrainian diaspora). Traffic from inside Ukraine itself is not visible here.
Android (googleplay library, historical data backfilled by AppstoreSpy)
- 2026-06-10 already has 217k installs (adding 1–2 thousand a day) → 08-01 325k → 09-01 456k → 10-01 714k → 10-21 1.02M → 11-05 1.25M. Since September, daily installs jumped from a few thousand to 1–40k; 10-21 (the day after a large-scale air raid on 10-20) added +68k in one day. Over the last 7 days: +84,880.
- The Play listing date 2026-08-04 was reset (the app actually goes back earlier; TikTok was already promoting it in June 2025).
- 29,037 ratings, 5.0 average, and the star distribution is all 5 stars with 0 text reviews. That distribution is abnormal (compare RadarUA 4.59 and the official app 4.64). It could be a scraping problem or incentivized ratings; not verified.
iOS (appstore library)
- Ukraine free overall chart #2, Utilities #1; rating 18,158 (4.70), +7 ratings over the last 2,023 days. For comparison, the official "Повітряна тривога" (Ajax Systems / Ministry of Digital Transformation) is #41 on the UA free overall chart, with +7 ratings over the last 4,926 days.
- From 11-03 to 11-06, daily rating growth jumped from ~100 to 340–505. That came right after 11-01 the official air-raid alert app was hacked, sent a fake nuclear alert, and was temporarily taken offline (BBC 2026-11-01). RadarUA jumped in the same period, which suggests a category-wide user spillover rather than a move by NEPTUN alone. The Play 11-05 single-day +42k also falls in this window.
Where the traffic goes: most of it is on the app (Play 1.25M + #2 on the iOS Ukraine overall chart). The website is the acquisition funnel and serves diaspora and desktop use. Every page has an "install" banner with a utm_source=neptun.in.ua&utm_medium=web_banner link (visible in the source of 404 pages), so the site is clearly treated as a funnel into the app.
3. Competitors
| Product | Where | Launched | Scale | How NEPTUN differs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Повітряна тривога (Ajax Systems + Ministry of Digital Transformation, map.ukrainealarm.com) | iOS/Android/web | 2022-03 | Play 17.6M installs; iOS UA 348k ratings; Tranco 7,416 | Official alert push, the de facto standard. 2026-10-17 later added a rough map of drone/missile direction, but it shows regions only, isn't real-time, and excludes ballistic missiles (DOU). 11-01 was hacked once. |
| alerts.in.ua(Ukrzen) | Web + app | 2022 | Tranco 9,390; CrUX global top 5 thousand; app 690k installs | Established alert map that also shows causes and some movement, but the core is alert status; has a developer API |
| RadarUA(K Develop & Media,radarua.com) | Android/iOS/web/YouTube livestream | 2026-06-23 | Play 1.04M (from 0 4 months ago), +139k in the last 7 days (more than NEPTUN); #10 on the iOS UA overall chart; website Tranco 509k→71k | The most direct rival, with nearly the same features and comparable growth; adds 24/7 YouTube livestreams. It has matched or passed NEPTUN on app install growth, but its website traffic is still well behind |
| dimap.live | Web | Not verified | Tranco ~70k, stable | Pure web, self-described as "most accurate", hasn't gained traction |
| mapa.ua / skyalert.pp.ua / detoyshahed.in.ua | Web | Not verified | mapa.ua Tranco ~480k | Similar web map, small scale |
| Deshahed(deshahed.info) | Web | End of 2024 – 2025 | 688k cumulative visitors, site now shut down | Volunteer project that announced "mission accomplished" and shut down after the official map launched, pointing users to the official app |
| Neboskhyl / Dronar / Sych / КОНТУР / Air Alert Radar (iOS), KUPOL (Play) | iOS/Android | 2026-08 to October | Neboskhyl #25 on UA overall chart, 2,359 rating; the rest range from dozens to hundreds | A copycat wave from the second half of 2026; KUPOL uses NEPTUN's open API directly |
| Telegram monitoring channels (єРадар and others) | Telegram | From ¥2022 | Tens to millions of subscriptions (not verified individually) | Original information sources, text feeds, no map; NEPTUN essentially structures them |
4. Growth tactics (evidence)
- Timing / platform event (confirmed): 2026 autumn air strikes hit a record intensity. 2026-10 saw 8,740 Shahed drones in a single month, including 4,000+ jet-powered ones (Kyiv Independent). On the night of 10-20, 165 drones attacked (fakty). The next day, NEPTUN Play gained +68k and RadarUA +79k. 11-01 official app was taken down by hackers, and over the following days both apps' iOS rating growth rates multiplied by 3–4x. Demand was "blown up by the strikes," and the whole category rose together.
- SEO / programmatic keyword landing pages (confirmed): the site has karta-tryvoh, karta-shahediv, radar-shahediv, tryvoga-zaraz, povitryana-tryvoga, statistics, and a blog (2026-05–06 long-tail articles such as "two-wall rule", "what is KAB", "how long for a Shahed to reach your city"). The homepage FAQ explicitly targets terms like "карта тривог / мапа тривог / повітряна тривога зараз". Searches for "Нептун карта тривог" and "карта шахедів онлайн найкраща" return neptun.in.ua in the top two results (Jina search). A third-party SEO site, aktualnoua.com.ua, already has a page titled "Мапа Neptun онлайн" (2026-01).
- Website-to-app funnel (confirmed): every page has an install banner with utm parameters. The site is free with no ads; the app has ads plus a PRO tier.
- Store ASO (partly confirmed): the Play title is English ("Ukraine Alert Map: Dron Alerts"), the iOS title is Ukrainian ("Карта тривог - Dron Alerts"). Both target "карта тривог" and "alert map". On iOS it sits in the Utilities category and ranks #1.
- TikTok / Threads buzz (confirmed but small): @neptun_ukr 2025-06 two videos with 228k / 40k views and 3,426 followers, no updates since; a "useful apps" account on Threads reposted it (1.4K views). Not a main channel.
- Open API for attribution backlinks (confirmed): the free API requires a visible "NEPTUN" credit. Third-party maps such as KUPOL state "data from NEPTUN's public API", which brings brand exposure and backlinks.
- Paid acquisition: not in our Meta/Google ad libraries (those libraries only track listed products, so absence doesn't mean no spend). Not verified.
- X / HN / media: x-radar shows no mentions in the last 90 days. We found no mainstream media coverage specifically of NEPTUN.
5. Why it took off
- Demand surged from the 2026 autumn air raids. The whole "where are the Shaheds" category grew together (NEPTUN, RadarUA, Neboskhyl all moved in sync).
- The official app has long only told you "this region has an alert", not "what's flying where". Telegram channels have the information but as text streams. NEPTUN combines the two into one map by district, with direction and confidence levels, which fills the gap. The official 10-17 added a rough version (not real-time, no ballistic coverage), which in some ways educated the market. 11-01 being hacked pushed a batch of users toward alternatives.
- It built an app with push notifications earlier than most web-based peers (people in Telegram groups want "my phone buzzes when something is flying toward my area") and used an SEO website as a low-cost funnel. The website's Tranco is already close to alerts.in.ua.
- Diaspora traffic: CrUX rankings rose in Poland, Germany, Italy and other countries, as Ukrainians abroad check on home. This part exists almost only on the web.
6. Differentiation, and whether it was the reason for the growth
- Real differences: ① multi-source cross-validation, showing the number of confirming sources and confidence levels (it publicly lists 89 channels and states which 4 regions have no independent observers; in a category built on "who's most accurate", transparency is itself a trust selling point). ② District-level coverage, direction arrows, and dead-reckoning prediction. ③ The website is fully free with no ads. ④ Free open API/SDK/embeds. ⑤ The app adds community chat, GPS-spoofing warnings, and family-circle SOS.
- Is this what drove the growth? Partly. RadarUA has nearly identical features, reached 1.04M installs within 4 months, and has even outpaced NEPTUN over the last 7 days. That suggests features alone aren't a moat; what decided growth was mainly timing plus who claimed the search and store terms first. NEPTUN's lead shows up on the website side (heaviest SEO, Tranco 11k vs RadarUA 71k) and in iOS rankings (#2 vs #10 on the UA overall chart).
7. Visibility and copycats
- Visibility: circulating in small circles. No public revenue, and no coverage from media or big X accounts. It appears only on Ukrainian local SEO sites, Threads, and small TikTok accounts. Similarweb/Semrush already list it as a competitor of alerts.in.ua. It's nearly invisible to outsiders, but the Ukrainian local niche is already crowded.
- Copycats: RadarUA (2026-06), Neboskhyl (10-01), Dronar (10-05), Sych (09-15), КОНТУР (10-16), Air Alert Radar (08-27), KUPOL (10-22, uses the NEPTUN API directly).
8. Takeaways
- "Public source aggregation + AI structuring + confidence labeling": turn unstructured, real-time information like Telegram into a map and push alerts, and build trust by transparently listing sources and coverage gaps.
- A free, ad-free website as the SEO entry point (one keyword per page plus a long-tail educational blog). The app monetizes through push, ads, and subscriptions. Every page of the site carries a utm install banner.
- A free open API that requires attribution, so other products do the backlinking and brand promotion for you.
- When a sudden event hits (a competitor or official outage, an attack wave), category demand spikes together, and whoever has already claimed the store and search terms captures the most.
- Topic extrapolation: other high-frequency real-time risk scenarios (Israel/Middle East rocket alerts, typhoons, earthquakes, wildfires, countries bordering war zones).
9. Uncertain
- Revenue scale unknown (Play in-app purchase prices $2.79–$11.99; we did not see it on the iOS UA Top Grossing chart).
- Whether the Play distribution of all 5 stars and 0 text reviews is real is unverified (could be a scraping issue or incentivized ratings).
- Whether it runs paid acquisition is unverified; there is no direct data on the website-vs-app traffic split.
- Whether the official app's 10-17 movement map ends up substituting for NEPTUN or educating the market in the medium term depends on data after November (Tranco lags by 1–2 weeks and is still rising).
- Team size: the store listings are under an individual developer's name, and the website calls itself a "team"; not verified.
