275x354 px, 20 to 50 KB: a small image-resizing site that, on the back of Indian exam applicants, climbed into the global top 120k
What it is A free website that resizes images in the browser, compresses them to a set KB size, and applies exam photo specs. It earns from ads and a $4.99 lifetime ad-removal purchase.
Why it took off A year of building thousands of long-tail search pages got it through the new-site period. In September it added 55 Indian exam photo pages, which landed right on the application season, and it may also have picked up slots freed by Google's two spam content updates.
BHow you could ride it Don't go into India. Take the playbook of "official photo specs as search pages" to exam and ID contexts in Indonesia, the Philippines, Vietnam, Brazil and other countries, write in the local language, and launch 6–9 months before their application seasons.
Global rank 113k · 90 days ago 930k
A one-person image resizing site, Resize Box, with no new features, climbed from outside the global top 2026 million to around #110k in October 80, and it's still rising. Its traffic doesn't come from social media. It comes from Google search: nearly five thousand pages of the form "resize an image to a certain size and KB," timed with India's exam application season. Below: what it does, why now, where the money comes from, who it's competing with, and whether the same thing can be copied for another country.
The photo one exam applicant has to upload
India's SSC CGL is the unified recruitment exam for central government clerical staff. The online application requires two image uploads: a photo at 275x354 px, JPG, 20 to 50 KB; and a signature at 140x60 px, 10 to 20 KB. Too big or too small and the upload is rejected; a blurry signature gets sent back. Every year tens of millions sit exams like these: SSC, banks, railways, GATE, CAT, UGC NET, and each one has different specs.
So every application season, huge numbers of people search Google for "resize image for ssc cgl" or "compress photo to 20 kb." In September 2026 10, resizebox.com launched its SSC CGL page: open it, and you get an upload box. Click "Photo" and it locks to 275x354, 20–50 KB; click "Signature" and it switches to 140x60, 10–20 KB; output is forced to JPG; and the FAQ below answers questions like "how big should the signature be in 2026" and "should the signature DPI be set." All processing runs in the browser, and the page says "Images Never Leave Your Device."
In the same month, the site pushed out roughly 55 Indian exam and recruitment photo pages between September 4 and 16 (about 100 URLs including multilingual versions): GATE, CAT, UPSC, NEET, JEE, IBPS, SBI, railway Group D, state police recruitment...
How much it grew
| Timeline | Global website ranking (Tranco) |
|---|---|
| August to October 1 | Stuck at 82–830k |
| Oct 15 | 413k |
| Oct 22 | 220k |
| Nov 5 | #113k (116k the day before, still climbing) |
This ranking is a rolling 30-day figure and lags. The Chrome real-user tiers show it earlier: globally it jumped from "top 500k" in August to "top 50k" in September; in India it went from "top 500k" in June, to top 100k in July, top 50k in August and top 10k in September. Indonesia, the Philippines, Vietnam and South Korea rose to the top 50k over the same period; Brazil and Mexico rose to the top 100k. The US, UK, Germany and Japan never moved.
So the real story: India moved first in July, jumped a full tier in September, and only showed up on the rankings in October. The bulk of the traffic is Indian applicants, followed by Southeast Asia, South Korea and Latin America.
What it is, and where the money comes from
A tool site with 40 tools in its menu: resize by pixels, cm, mm, inches, KB and MB; batch resize; crop; compress JPG/PNG/WebP/PDF; convert formats; convert between images and PDF; DPI checks; background removal; Instagram grid splitter. No login, no watermark. The creator is credited as Dominic Lux (identity unverified).
Three revenue streams: Google AdSense display ads on the page; a popup selling "lifetime ad removal," with a $9.99 original price crossed out and a current price of $4.99, paid once, covering 5 devices; and a Ko-fi tip button in the footer. There's no subscription. Revenue has never been disclosed. Ad rates for Indian traffic are very low, so this site's income is most likely in the hundreds to low thousands of dollars a month (inferred).
Cost is close to zero: all processing runs in the user's browser, and the server only serves static pages.
How the traffic was built
Nearly five thousand landing pages. The sitemap has 4,839 URLs. 573 are English; the rest are copies in 16 languages (Spanish, Portuguese, Russian, Korean, Vietnamese, Japanese and Indonesian, about 400 each). The English pages break down as follows:
- 281 "resize-image-to-[size]" pages, covering px, cm, mm, inches, KB and MB;
- 54 "compress-jpeg-to-[X] KB" pages;
- dozens of platform size pages: YouTube thumbnails, Twitch emotes, Roblox shirt templates, Etsy, Shopify...
- About 55 Indian exam photo pages, plus a dedicated signature page.
Each page targets a long-tail search term with little competition, and people searching these terms have a very clear goal: I need a picture at 20 KB.
It took a year to pay off. Going by the update dates in the sitemap: 2025 July, the first batch of 98 size pages; 2025 December through 2026 February, 760 to 1,083 pages a month (KB pages and multilingual copies); after that, two or three hundred a month; 2026 September, the exam pages were completed. A new domain usually takes 6 to 12 months to earn rankings in Google. It made it through that window and landed right on the 8 to October application seasons for CAT, GATE 2027, SSC and banks.
Backlinks came from directories. Starting 2025 July, it was submitted to a batch of product directories: startupfa.me, productwatch, Peerlist, DevHunt, indiepa.ge and others. These pages have zero reviews and zero votes; their only purpose is to give a new domain a little authority.
No social media. It is nowhere to be found in discussions on X, Reddit, Hacker News, Product Hunt or TikTok. No ads, and no media coverage. The same author also put out background-removal extensions on Chrome, Edge and Firefox (the Chrome one has 659 users), but the traffic from those is negligible.
A possible tailwind (speculation). Google shipped spam content updates on August 18–21 and between September 24 and October 8. The Indian "exam photo compression" niche was originally packed with rough small sites. A similar site, simpleimageresizer.com, rose from 74k to 22k over the same period, while the big players iLoveIMG and pi7 held steady. The updates likely cleared out a batch of small sites, and the freed slots went to sites with many pages, decent content and tools that actually work. Only the timing lines up; no keyword ranking data confirms this.
Who it's competing with
This is an extremely crowded category. Resize Box is a carefully made newcomer, not a leader.
| Competitors | Scale (global ranking, 11-05) | How it differs |
|---|---|---|
| iLoveIMG | 6,584 | Big all-in-one brand, top 5k in India, server-side processing |
| pi7.org | 9,463 | Head of the Indian exam photo and KB compression niche, top 1k in India; same playbook, and Resize Box looks like a smaller copy of it |
| simpleimageresizer.com | 22k | Behind it is the developer of Photo Resizer, which has 43M installs on Google Play; it has an app funnel and was also rising over the same period |
| reduceimages / resizepixel / imageresizer | 22k–72k | Long-established general-purpose site, holding steady |
| imresizer.com | 198k | Queries like 3x4cm, 2x2inch and 35x45mm often rank it first |
| sahiphoto.in, examphotoresize.in, compresskaru.net and others | Around 200k or not ranked | Single-language small site covering only Indian exam photos |
| Canva, Adobe Express | Huge | Requires login, design-oriented, doesn't handle exact-to-the-KB exam specs |
In early November, searching Brave for "resize image to 20kb" did not show it in the top 12 results. It has nothing other sites don't: local processing is claimed by many small sites, and pi7 already had exam pages. The one difference that actually helps traffic is 17 languages, while most competitors only do English or Hindi. In October the author also opened a reskinned sister site, ResizeBento.com, while working on AI music and other sites, so this is someone running a portfolio of sites.
What's worth learning from it
It isn't "make an image tool." It's this combination:
- Find a scenario with hard government specs. The specs are themselves search terms (275x354, 20 KB, 3x4 cm, exam name plus year), and the people searching have no choice but to follow them.
- One tool core, plus thousands of templated landing pages, each stating the official specs and the year ("GATE 2027"), launched one or two months before the application season.
- Browser-side processing means zero server cost; AdSense plus a cheap lifetime ad removal is enough to break even.
- Accept 6 to 12 months with no traffic on a new domain.
Its own multilingual pages just translate the English copy and don't build out local exams. That's the gap left for followers.
If it were you
Verdict: Don't enter India's niche. pi7, iLoveIMG and simpleimageresizer already hold it, and Resize Box squeezed in only through a year of page-building plus a stretch of algorithm tailwind. What's worth doing is taking the same playbook to national exam and ID scenarios no one is seriously working on yet. But it's a slow business, and you are betting on Google.
适合谁:会写程序化页面(Next.js / Astro 静态生成)、懂一点 SEO、能接受一年回报期的 1 个人;最好懂一门目标国家的语言,能把官方报名公告读明白。
Who it doesn't suit: people who want money within three months; people who can build tools but won't spend time checking dozens of official spec sheets; and people counting on social media or Product Hunt to bring traffic (nobody talks about resizing images on social media).
How to do it: Pick one country and list every civil-service, university-entrance, visa and ID photo and signature spec (Indonesia CPNS and UTBK, Philippine civil-service exams, Vietnam, Brazil ENEM and the various concurso, Mexico CURP, etc.). Start with whichever country has the most and messiest specs. Build a browser-side crop and compress engine, one page per exam: one click applies the spec, forces the output format, and squeezes into the KB range. Write the pages in the local language, not translated English. Monetize the same way: AdSense plus a $3–5 lifetime ad-free unlock.
How to get users: Google organic search, nothing else. Submit dozens of product directory sites at launch to build backlinks. Title pages "exam name + year + photo size". Update specs and year the same day each year's registration notice comes out.
When to launch: 6 to 9 months before the target country's next big exam registration season. For India, it would have been stronger 2027 months before the August registration season, pi7 included. Don't wait.
Signs you've read it wrong: ① From December to 2027 January, India's registration season is over and Resize Box's global rank falls back beyond 500k. That means it was riding seasonality and one algorithm swing, not a stable long tail. ② Your site has been live 9 months and Google search still brings in fewer than a few hundred visits a day. This route is closed for new domains. ③ Google puts a resize tool directly in search results, or India's exam registration systems build cropping and compression in. Demand for this kind of site shrinks with it.

Data as of 2026-11-05 (Tranco) / 2026-09 (CrUX); research date 2026-11-07. The card name "Background Remover" is a mismatch: that's a Chrome extension by the same developer, listed with 2026-08-31 659 users (chromestore library). The website itself is the Resize Box image resizer.
One line
A one-person (credited to Dominic Lux) browser-only image tool site: resize (px/cm/mm/inch/KB/MB), crop, compress, convert formats, ID and exam photo sizes, in 17 languages. Revenue from AdSense display ads plus a $4.99 lifetime ad-free unlock. It has no new mechanic. In a crowded SEO category, it got Google traffic in 2026 9–October through "thousands of long-tail landing pages + multiple languages + one clean, working tool."
1. Data: how much did it actually grow?
- Tranco (traffic library rank_day): from 2026-08 to 2026-10-01 it sat near 827k without moving. 10-08 856k → 10-15 413k → 10-22 220k → 11-05 113k. The climb was concentrated in October and was still rising daily (11-04 116k → 11-05 113k).
- CrUX (real Chrome users, traffic library crux_domain): global top 2026-05 1M → 06–08 top 500k → 09 top 50k; India 05–06 top 500k → 07 top 100k → 08 top 50k → 09 top 10k; Indonesia and the Philippines 07–08 top 100k → top 50k; Vietnam from 07 top 50k; South Korea entered the top 50k at 09; Brazil and Mexico rose to the top 100k. Developed countries such as the US, UK, Germany, and Japan have stayed at the top 500k all along.
- Conclusion: real traffic started in India and Southeast Asia from July, then jumped a full tier in September (globally up two tiers in one month). Tranco is a 30-day rolling average with lag, so it only showed in October. India is the bulk of the traffic, followed by Indonesia, the Philippines, Vietnam, South Korea and Latin America.
- No app (searching "resizebox" in the App Store returns nothing; no match in the Play library). All traffic is web.
2. What it is and how it makes money
- Homepage tools plus a menu of 40 tools: batch resize, sizing by cm/mm/inch/KB/MB, aspect ratio, crop, compress JPG/PNG/WebP/PDF, format conversion, image↔PDF, DPI convert/check, EXIF, background removal, Instagram grid splitter, video frame extraction. Everything is processed locally, with "Images Never Leave Your Device" on the homepage and privacy policy.
- Templates: Facebook / Instagram / YouTube / TikTok / Etsy / Shopify / Roblox… platform sizes, plus Paper / Passport / Visa types.
- Monetization: AdSense embedded on pages (ca-pub-5058426550581294, in the homepage HTML); popup "Lifetime Ad-Free: ~~$9.99~~ $4.99 one-time payment, 5 devices"; Ko-fi tip link in the footer. No subscription, no login. Revenue undisclosed (no entry on TrustMRR or the indie library).
3. Growth tactics (evidence)
3.1 Programmatic SEO (main channel, confirmed)
sitemap.xml has 4,839 URLs in total: 573 in English, the rest are subdirectory copies in 16 languages (es 424, pt-br 422, ru 420, ko 397, vi 396, ja 393, id 384, de/it/zh 359, fr 306; nl/pl/th/tr/uk have only single digits to a dozen or so). English page makeup:
resize-image-to-<W>x<H>/-cm/-mm/-inch/-kb/-mb: 281;compress-jpeg-to-<N>kb: 54;compress-webp-to-…: 7;- Platform size pages for social networks (youtube-thumbnail-resizer, twitch-emote-resizer, roblox-shirt-pants-template-resizer…), dozens in total;
- About 55 Indian exam / recruitment photo pages:
resize-image-for-ssc-cgl / gate / cat / upsc / neet-ug / jee-main / ibps-po / sbi-po / rrb-group-d / tnpsc / up-police-constable / agniveer-vayu / aibe / ugc-net / mpesb …, plusresize-signature. Pages state the official pixel and KB ranges. Example: GATE "3.5x4.5 cm, within GATE 2027 official 200–530 px width range"; AIBE "photo 350x450 px 10–50 KB, signature 350x150 px 10–20 KB" (Jina search snippet).
Timeline (sitemap lastmod by month): 2025-07 98 pages (the first batch of px size pages) → 2025-11 29 → 2025-12 760, 2026-01 1,083, 2026-02 832 (KB/MB pages and multilingual copies went live in bulk, e.g. resize-image-to-20-kb 2026-01-20, id/resize-image-to-3x4-cm 2026-03-23) → 3–June 260–430 per month → 2026-09 234, with exam pages concentrated between 09-04 and 09-16, roughly 100 URLs (multilingual included) in one push, resize-image-for-ssc-cgl 2026-09-10, resize-signature 2026-09-20. → Pages were built over nearly a year. India traffic started in July, and in September the exam pages filled in the same month. CrUX global and India both jumped tiers.
3.2 Backlinks: bulk submissions to directories (confirmed, small volume)
startupfa.me (2025-07-04 listed, selling DR80+ dofollow), productwatch.io, peerlist, devhunt, indiepa.ge, nxgntools, aitoolsrecap, goodfirms, nachonacho, agentlocker, poweredbyai, a carrd landing page. This is the classic "submit to 100 directories for backlinks." None of these pages have reviews or votes. Their only job is to build authority for a new domain, not to bring traffic.
3.3 Extension stores as an entry point (confirmed, very small volume)
Chrome "Background Remover" with 659 users (published 2026-08-31), Edge "Background Remover by ResizeBox.com", Firefox "Free Background Remover". Mainly used for backlinks and brand presence for the main site. Contribution to traffic is negligible.
3.4 what I didn't find
X (x-radar 90 days, 0 posts), Reddit, HN, Product Hunt and TikTok show no discussion or promotion of it. Ad libraries show no matching paid ads. No media coverage or big accounts have written about it.
3.5 Possible external push: two Google spam updates (speculated, not verified)
Google rolled out the August spam update from 2026-08-18~21 (Search Engine Land reports the share of top10 URLs that dropped out of the top100 was 82% higher than usual), then a September spam update around 2026-09-24~10-08 (Google status page, SERoundtable). The Indian "exam photo / KB compression" niche is full of low-quality .in sites (sahiphoto.in, examphotoresize.in, docset.in, compresskaru.net...). Over the same period, simpleimageresizer.com rose from 73k (08-20) to 26k (10-01), while the leaders iloveimg, pi7, imageresizer, and reduceimages stayed flat (traffic library). It's likely the spam updates cleared out a batch of small sites, and the long-tail share they left was picked up by sites with more pages, decent content, and tools that actually work. resizebox is one of the beneficiaries. This is only a timing match; no ranking data confirms it.
4. Competitors
| Competitors | Form | Launched | Scale (traffic library 2026-11-05 Tranco / CrUX India) | How it differs from resizebox |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| iLoveIMG | Web | 2010 era | 6,584 / India top 5k | A large all-purpose brand site, multilingual, processes files on servers; resizebox leans more toward long-tail size pages |
| pi7.org(image.pi7.org) | Web | Earlier than 2024 | 9,463 / India top 1k | The head of India's exam photo and KB compression niche, also with pages like resize-image-for-gate and id/ubah-ukuran-foto-3x4; resizebox is its smaller clone |
| simpleimageresizer.com (Farluner, developer of Photo Resizer with 43M installs on Play) | Web + app | Early | 22,372 (08-20 74k) / top 5k | Also rising over the same period; has an app portfolio feeding traffic, which resizebox doesn't |
| reduceimages.com | Web | Early | 22,829 / top 5k | Only does shrinking; flat |
| imageresizer.com | Web | Early | 50,316 / top 5k | General resizing; flat to slightly down |
| resizepixel.com | Web | Early | 71,687 / top 5k | Multilingual KB pages (the Korean page ranks first); flat |
| imresizer.com | Web | Early | 197,976 / top 10k | Queries like 3x4cm, 2x2inch, and 35x45mm often rank first |
| pancardresizer.com, compresskaru.net, sahiphoto.in, examphotoresize.in, formphotoeditor.com, docset.in, etc. | Web (India) | various | Around 200k or not ranked | Small single-market sites for specific Indian exam/ID scenarios, mostly single-language |
| Canva / Adobe Express / Fotor resize features | Big-company features | — | — | Require login, design-focused; no precise KB compression or exam specs |
| ResizeBento.com | Web | 2026-10 (listed on nxgntools) | Not charted | Re-skinned sites from the same author |
5. Why it took off
- Fresh demand, high volume, strongly seasonal: tens of millions of Indians apply each year for SSC, bank, railway, GATE, CAT, UGC NET and other exams, and the application portals require photos and signatures within fixed pixel and KB ranges. 8–October is the application season for CAT, GATE 2027, SSC, and bank recruitment exams. India's CrUX rank climbed steadily from the top 500k to the top 10k.
- Programmatic pages built up enough volume: 4,839 URLs cover combinations of size × unit × language × platform × exam, each a low-competition long-tail query. It took a year of building before results showed (typical new-domain sandbox period).
- Exam pages added in September, right on time: about 55 exam pages went live mostly between 2026-09-04 and 16, stating official specs, timed to catch the application season.
- Multilingual coverage picks up Southeast Asia and Latin America: CrUX for Indonesia, Vietnam, the Philippines, South Korea, Brazil, and Mexico rose in step, while most competitors are single-language India sites.
- (Inference) The two Google spam updates, 8 and September, opened room for "tool sites with real content"; the similar simpleimageresizer also rose over the same period.
- The product is good enough and clean: local processing with no uploads, no login, no watermark, fast pages, and 40 tools that link to each other, so users finish their task and bounce less.
6. Differentiation
No fundamental differentiation. The tool itself (canvas-based local resizing and compression) is something an open-source library can build in a few days, and pi7, imresizer, and simpleimageresizer already built the same matrix of exam-photo + KB + cm pages long ago. The differences it can honestly claim are three: ① pure local processing / privacy (many Indian small sites claim this too); ② 17 language subdirectories (most competitors are single-language); ③ broader page coverage (social platforms, print, exams, and ID photos all on one site). It got results from SEO execution and timing, not differentiation. Among the differentiators, only "multilingual" has contributed real traffic (the gains in Southeast Asia and Latin America).
7. Visibility
Almost nobody knows about it yet: no discussion on X, Reddit, HN, PH, or TikTok; no public revenue; only self-submitted listings on directory sites. But the niche itself is extremely crowded (in Brave, searching "resize image to 20kb", none of the top 12 results are it; they're simpleimageresizer, pi7, resizepixel, and so on).
8. Copycats
No one copying it specifically was found. The author also opened ResizeBento.com on 2026-10 (same "local processing, batch resize" concept), alongside MusicBento (AI music), imagedpi.org, and mystarion.app. One person is running a network of sites.
9. Takeaways
- Choosing a niche with hard government, exam, or ID spec requirements makes the specs the keywords (pixels, KB, cm): naturally long-tail, naturally search-intent-driven, and users have no alternative.
- One tool core plus templated landing pages × languages, scaled to several thousand; pages state official specs and label the year (GATE 2027), and go live ahead of the application season.
- New domains first gather backlinks through directory sites, accepting a 6–12 month sandbox period.
- Browser-side processing means zero server cost; AdSense plus a cheap lifetime ad-removal purchase can cover costs.
- Copy the model to other countries: Indonesia's CPNS, Vietnam and the Philippines' civil service exams, Brazil's ENEM/concurso, Mexico's CURP photo requirements, and so on. Its own multilingual pages are currently just translated English-slug copy with shallow localization, so there's room to improve.
10. Uncertain
- Which specific keywords drive the traffic (no GSC or ranking data); whether exam pages or KB pages contribute more is unclear.
- The effect of Google's spam updates is only an inference from timing.
- Whether traffic falls after the application season ends (after 11–December); Tranco is still rising, and October CrUX data isn't out yet.
- Revenue, ad-removal conversion rate, and the author's identity (whether Dominic Lux is a real name and where they are based) are unverified.
