# A video downloader site that spent zero on ads squeezed into Indonesia's top 10,000 by not translating its keywords

**What it is** A free website where you paste a link to download videos and images from Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, Pinterest, X and Reddit. No login, no watermark, 14 languages.

**Why it took off** It launched in 10 languages on day one. Each language got titles built from the verbs locals actually search, plus "no watermark", and hundreds of landing pages. That earned it Google organic traffic in long-tail Indonesian, Turkish and Vietnamese queries the big sites hadn't bothered with.

**C** **How you could follow it** Don't build another downloader. Take its method (per-language keyword research plus a platform × format × language page grid) and apply it to less crowded paste-a-link tools like format conversion, compression and background removal. Start with Southeast Asia, Turkey and Latin America.

Grade C: the method is clear and worth learning, but the downloader category is long saturated, and copycat sites that rode its name grew faster. It stalled at 210k monthly users, and with ads it likely earns only a few hundred to a couple thousand dollars a month, with platform-terms and Google crackdown risk on top. Few people know about it yet.

Global rank 217k · 90 days ago, top 1M+

SaveKit is a social video downloader built by an indie developer: paste a link to download videos and images from Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, Pinterest, X and Reddit. No login, no watermark. It launched at the end of February, ran no ads, and this summer started gaining traction in Indonesia, Turkey, Vietnam and Mexico. Its global rank went from well beyond the top 90M to 1k within 217 days. It took off not because the product is so good, but because its multilingual SEO is more granular than its peers'. Yet it sits in one of the oldest and most crowded tool categories on the internet, and after October its rankings stopped moving.

### "I didn't spend a single dollar on ads."

In Mar 5, 2026, a developer named James Don posted on dev.to with the title "I built a social media downloader, and in 7 days Google indexed 169 keywords." In the first week after launch, daily site visitors went from 157 to 668 (Cloudflare dashboard screenshot), "download video from facebook" ranked #1, and pages in 5 languages (English, Spanish, Portuguese, Turkish, and Vietnamese) made it onto Google's first page. He wrote: "I didn't run a single ad."

He says the reason for building it was simple: he wanted to save a Pinterest image or a TikTok, but the tools he found were "full of ads, required signup, or wanted you to install something dodgy." So SaveKit's pitch is four "no"s: no ads, no login, no watermark, no redirects.

None of these selling points is unique. The part worth reading is the second half of that post, and the second post he wrote in Mar 27.

### What it got right: keywords must be researched one language at a time, not translated

Most downloader sites go multilingual by translating the interface and leaving keywords in English. SaveKit launched in 10 languages on day one (English, Spanish, Portuguese, Indonesian, Turkish, Vietnamese, Japanese, Korean, German, French) and has since expanded to 14. His words: "Keywords can't be translated. Every language needs research from scratch, treated as its own product launch."

Specifically, he did the following (all from his two dev.to posts):

- **Use the verb locals actually say.** Brazilians search "baixar", not "download". For Spanish he first used "guardar" (save), then found it ambiguous and switched to "descargar". Turkish uses "indir", and in Vietnamese "tải" and "lưu" were roughly split, so he mainly used "tải".

- **"No watermark" is the universal first modifier.** Indonesian tanpa watermark, Turkish filigransız, Arabic بدون علامة مائية. In mobile-first markets, the second modifier is "no app install needed".

- **Japanese and Korean use abbreviations.** Japanese searchers type "インスタ" far more than the full "インスタグラム"; by his estimate the search volume gap is 3 to 5 times. Korean works the same way: "인스타".

- **Run every term through Google autocomplete.** Words like "safe", "best" and "free" never autocomplete in any language, so he cut them, removing about 15% of the terms.

- **One title formula throughout** : "keyword - selling point | brand". He pulled titles from 60+ competitors and none used square brackets. Today the Indonesian homepage title reads "Download Video Gratis - Tanpa Watermark, Tanpa Login | SaveKit" (11-06).

Then he filled the site with landing pages in a "platform × content type × language" grid: 16 tool pages (Instagram Reels, TikTok MP3, Pinterest images, X GIFs…) across 14 languages, plus about 129 blog posts like "how to download X videos" and "what to do when a download fails", for 409 URLs in total in the sitemap. Backlinks are limited to Product Hunt (2 upvotes), a few product directories, and his own two posts.

### Where the traffic came from: Indonesia, Turkey, Vietnam, not the US

Chrome's real-user data, bucketed by month, shows the languages it bet on very clearly:

| Market | June | July | August | September |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Indonesia | Top 500k | Top 100k | Top 10k | Top 10k |
| Turkey | Top 500k | Top 50k | Top 50k | Top 50k |
| Vietnam | Not charted | Top 500k | Top 50k | Top 50k |
| Mexico | Not charted | Not charted | Top 100k | Top 100k |
| Global | Not charted | Top 1M | Top 100k | Top 100k |

The US, UK, Japan and Brazil have stayed between the top 500k and top 1M throughout. Spain and Thailand briefly entered the top 100k in August, then fell back to the top 500k in September.

Global traffic rank (Tranco, 30-day rolling average, lags reality by one to two weeks): Sep 10 was the first time it cracked the top 1M (915k rank), a month later it was at 212k, and it has stayed between 217k and 220k ever since, sitting at #217,056 in Nov 5. So the real surge came in 7, August; after September it basically flatlined.

The August jump coincides with a Google spam-site crackdown update from Aug 18 to 21. It's possible some competitors were knocked down and it took their spots (inference; without its search console data this can't be confirmed). Based on a 210k rank, it likely gets a few thousand to over ten thousand visits a day now (estimate). The founder has not published any numbers since the first week.

### Does it make money: not yet

The homepage says "completely free, no paid tier," and the page has no ad code. But its Korean privacy policy says it "runs on advertising," and the ad partner listed is Google AdSense. In September it rewrote the whole site to say "download only content you own or have permission to use" and added a DMCA page, which looks like preparation for AdSense (inference).

Most of this category's money comes from display ads, while its traffic is concentrated in Indonesia, Turkey and Vietnam, where ad revenue per thousand impressions is very low. At current traffic, a rough estimate with ads is a few hundred to a couple thousand dollars a month (estimate).

### Who it's competing with: in the same market, brand-riding sites are growing faster

The downloader category keeps turning over: old sites get pushed down by Google and new ones keep appearing. SaveKit sits in the mid-to-small range.

| Site | Global rank (11-05) | Versus SaveKit |
|---|---|---|
| savefrom.net | 1,266 | A decade-old site that can download YouTube, with heavy ads and redirects |
| ssstik.io / snaptik.app | About 1,500 | A leader in TikTok downloads; SaveKit has publicly said it modeled its multilingual approach on them |
| fastdl.app / indown.io | About ¥1,600–1,700 | Instagram only, with 100× the volume |
| savefrom.co.id | 9,113 (415k, 90 days ago) | An Indonesian site riding the savefrom name, up 90x in 45 days in the same market |
| snaptik.fi | 11,979 (not on the chart 90 days ago) | A new site riding the snaptik name, growing far faster than it did |
| cobalt.tools | 38,019 | Open source, also pitching clean and ad-free, earlier and better known |
| y2mate.com, snapany.com and others | 11–200k | About the same size |

There's another layer: on Product Hunt, every month for 2026 years there have been several of these look-alikes (isave.video, SaveTube, OneClip Hub…), each with single-digit upvotes, and most never even made the top 1M. The playbook of "Cloudflare + multilingual download site + write up postmortems on dev.to for backlinks" already has several copycats you can find on dev.to. SaveKit is one of the few in this wave that actually got real traffic, but it only got this far.

On the user side, Trustpilot shows 23 reviews averaging 4.4 stars, 87% five-star. Most say "simple, fast" and "Facebook video quality is great." One four-star review says "after downloading three or four, it stops working," and a two-star complains about video quality (around October). Trustpilot marks it as having "not recently invited reviews."

### Why it stalled at #210k

What it grabbed were mostly mid-difficulty long-tail terms: "[platform] + [content] + no watermark" combinations in various non-English languages, plus terms like Arabic Pinterest downloader, which the founder says "almost nobody does" (inferred). Going higher means head-on fights with ssstik and savefrom, which have sat in the top 2000 spots for years. And its product differentiation won't hold: "no watermark" is everywhere, "no ads" was already offered by cobalt, and once it adds AdSense, even that goes.

This category has two unavoidable risks: download ability depends on each platform's APIs and terms, and every time a platform changes, it has to be fixed. And every time Google goes after spam sites, sites like this are prime targets. August may have lifted it, and the next update may knock it down.

### If it were you

**C** Copying it to build another video downloader isn't worth it: the category is crowded, sites that jumped on the same name grew faster than it did, and at its traffic level it earns maybe a few hundred to one or two thousand dollars a month in ads. What's worth taking is the method, applied to a tool category that's less crowded.

**Who it suits** : indie devs who can do programmatic SEO, are willing to grind keywords language by language, ideally speak a Southeast Asian, Turkish or Latin American language themselves, and have a small "paste a link or upload a file, get a result" tool, such as format conversion, compression, background removal or subtitle extraction.

**Who it doesn't suit** : anyone aiming to build a download site through SEO in English markets (SaveKit itself never broke in there); anyone wanting subscription revenue (these users don't pay, so the money comes only from ads); anyone who can't handle traffic dropping to zero when platforms or Google change the rules.

**How to do it** : follow its playbook, but target a different category. On day one, go live in 8 to 10 languages, prioritizing Indonesian, Turkish, Vietnamese, Portuguese and Spanish. In each language, pair the local verb with the category's first modifier (for download sites that's "no watermark"; for other categories, find your own), check every term with autocomplete, and record the reasons alongside. Title format: "Keyword - selling point | Brand". Build landing pages by "object × format × language", then add a batch of "X won't open / conversion failed, what to do" troubleshooting articles. Keep pages light and fast, and plan ad slots early rather than adding them later as it did, which risks dropping rankings.

**How to get users** : almost entirely Google organic search. For backlinks, do what it did: directories like Product Hunt, AlternativeTo and SaaSHub, plus one or two technical write-ups explaining how you picked terms for each language, posted on dev.to or a developer community in your target language. Skip social media; its X account has only 6 followers so far.

**When to move** : there's no seasonality, but this playbook is being copied more and more, so the earlier you claim non-English long-tail terms, the better. Give yourself 3 months: within 90 days of launch, you should be ranking in the global top 500k for at least two or three target languages.

**Where this analysis could be wrong** : ① If SaveKit's rankings kept rising after it added AdSense, then the download-site path is broader than assumed here, and building a download site directly would also work. ② If after the next Google spam update it and similar small sites collectively fell out of the top 1M, then this programmatic page strategy is being targeted by Google, and switching categories wouldn't make it safe. ③ If you follow the playbook for 90 days and none of your target languages break into the top 500k, then its August jump was mostly luck, not method.

## SaveKit (savekit.io) research report

> In one sentence: a social media video/image downloader (Instagram / TikTok / Facebook / Pinterest / X / Reddit; no login, no watermark) launched by a solo indie dev (signed James Don on dev.to) at the 2026-02 bottom. It ran no paid ads. It relied on multilingual SEO, going live in 10 languages on day one with titles written for each local search term, plus a dozen-odd directory backlinks. From 2026 7 to August, it picked up traffic in Indonesia, Turkey, Vietnam and Mexico, and its Tranco rank rose from outside the list to about 217k; it has been flat since October. Compared with head sites like ssstik, snaptik and savefrom, it is two orders of magnitude smaller. Its differentiation is thin, mostly just "clean, no ads", plus multilingual SEO that is more serious than a typical indie site.

### 1. What it is

- Landing page "Free Video Downloader - No Watermark, No Login": paste a link to download MP4 / MP3 / original images, supports carousels, claims no re-encoding, up to 4K. Entirely free, no signup, no app install (source: savekit.io homepage, read 2026-11-07).

- Site structure: sitemap has 409 URLs in total. 16 "platform × content type" tool pages (facebook-video / facebook-reels / instagram-reels / instagram-photo / tiktok-mp3 / pinterest-image / twitter-gif / reddit-gif, etc.), multiplied by 14 languages (en, ar, de, es, fr, hi, id, ja, ko, pt, ru, th, tr, vi), plus about 129 blog posts, mostly "how to download X videos" and "what to do when download fails" (source: savekit.io/sitemap.xml, robots.txt).

- Tech stack: SvelteKit 2 + Svelte 5, deployed on Cloudflare Workers/Pages; pnpm monorepo, blog originally built with Astro (source: the founder's dev.to article 2026-03-05).

- Is there an app: no App Store listing under the same name; all traffic lands on the web. Note: GitHub has a separate project also named SaveKit (AbdulllrahmanDev, a local yt-dlp downloader), unrelated to this site.

- Timeline: X account @savekit_tools registered 2025-12; launched on Product Hunt 2026-02-24 (2 votes, #477 on the daily chart, not featured; source: our producthunt library); first Wayback snapshot 2026-02-28; TikTok added 2026-03-04; two SEO write-ups posted on dev.to 2026-03-05 and 03-27; Trustpilot claimed 2026-03. The data card says it "launched 2026-03", but it actually went live at the 2026-02 bottom.

### 2. Growth data (our traffic database)

- Tranco: first entered the top 1M on 2026-09-10 (915,283), then 09-17 434,896 → 09-24 312,773 → 10-01 249,719 → 10-08 211,680; from mid-October it has stayed flat around 21.7–220k, and 11-05 is 217,056. Tranco is a 30-day rolling average and lags by 1–2 weeks, so the real take-off happened in August.

- CrUX (real Chrome users, monthly buckets): globally, top 2026-07 1M → top 08 100k → top 09 100k. By country:
    - Indonesia top 06 500k → top 07 100k → top 08 10k → top 09 10k (strongest market)
    - Turkey top 06 500k → top 07 50k, then held steady
    - Vietnam top 07 500k → top 08 50k
    - Mexico top 08 100k; Spain top 08 100k, then fell back to top 09 500k; Thailand top 08 100k, then fell back to top 09 500k
    - The US, UK, Japan, Brazil, Canada and France all sit between the top 500k and top 1M buckets

- Takeaway: traffic is concentrated in Indonesia, Turkey, Vietnam and Spanish-speaking Latin America, markets that are mobile-first and search in the native verb, exactly the languages the founder targeted from the start. It barely broke into English markets. It took off in July, jumped a tier in August, went flat in September, and several countries have been sliding since.

- The founder has only publicly shared first-week numbers: daily visitors went from 157 to 668, Google indexed 169 keywords, and "download video from facebook" reached page one in 1,5 languages (dev.to, 2026-03-05; screenshots from Cloudflare Analytics). No numbers have been shared since. The homepage has a "Verified traffic data" block, but the figures load dynamically on the front end and couldn't be read.

### 3. Competitors

Social media downloaders are among the oldest and most crowded tool categories on the internet, and the leading sites have held steady in the global top 2000 for years. Below are Tranco ranks and global CrUX buckets from the traffic library 2026-11-05:

| Competitors | Type | Tranco now / 90 days ago | CrUX global | How it differs from SaveKit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| savefrom.net | Web + extension, multi-platform | 1,266 / 1,831 | Top 1 thousand | Long-established (over a decade), heavy ads and redirects, can also download YouTube |
| ssstik.io | Web, TikTok specialist | 1,532 / 1,466 | Top 1 thousand | Defined the category; SaveKit publicly cites its multilingual approach as the model. Lots of ads. |
| snaptik.app | Web, TikTok | 1,566 / 1,545 | Top 1 thousand | Same as above |
| fastdl.app / indown.io | Web, Instagram | About ¥1,600–1,700 | Top 1 thousand | Instagram specialist, 100 times SaveKit's traffic |
| fdown.net | Web, Facebook | 1,378 | Top 1 thousand | Facebook specialist |
| klickpin.com | Web, Pinterest | 9,039 | Top 5 thousand | Specializes in Pinterest. |
| snapsave.app / sssinstagram.com / igram.world | Web | About ¥8,800–9,200 | Top 5 thousand | Multi-platform, older site |
| snaptik.fi | Web, TikTok | 11,979 (not on the chart 90 days ago) | Top 5 thousand | New site from the same period, riding the snaptik name, grew much faster than SaveKit |
| savefrom.co.id | Web, an Indonesian site riding the savefrom name | 9,113 (90 days ago, 415,132) | — | In the same Indonesian market, the name-riding new site grew 45x |
| cobalt.tools | Open-source web downloader | 38,019 | Top 50k | Open-source, no ads, clean positioning, closest to SaveKit's pitch but earlier and better known |
| y2mate.com / snapany.com / instasupersave.com | Web | 11–200k | Top 100k | Same scale as SaveKit |
| linkgrab.io / redvid.io / rapidsave.com | Web, small site | 39–800k | — | Xiaozhan |
| Same-category launches on Product Hunt in 2026 years (isave.video, SaveTube, OneClip Hub, MediaTools, TikTok Downloader Without Watermark...) | Web | Most aren't in the top 1M | — | Several a month, all under 10 votes, so indie devs clearly keep building this |
| Big-company features | Instagram / TikTok's built-in save, TikTok downloads with watermark, Pinterest download buttons | — | — | Platform saves come with watermarks or stay inside the app; the demand for third-party sites comes from "no watermark, save to device" |
| App | Lots of TikSave, TkSave, SaveTik-style apps on iOS and Android | — | — | SaveKit doesn't do an app |

The traffic library filters for "up 90x+ in rank over 3 days, name containing save/tik/snap/insta/dl" and surfaces newer download sites like my-fastdl.com, savefromins.com, snaptik.com.lc, snapgram.io, savethis.cloud, reelslink.com. This category keeps turning over: new sites keep appearing and older ones get knocked down by Google. SaveKit is one of the mid-sized, smaller players.

### 4. Growth tactics

| Channel | Evidence | Confirmed? | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Multilingual SEO (main channel) | The founder wrote two dev.to posts: launched in 10 languages on day one, later expanded to 12, and the sitemap now has 14. Each language uses local verbs (baixar / descargar / indir / tải / تحميل) plus the "no watermark" modifier; Japanese and Korean use abbreviations (インスタ / 인스타); every term is checked against Google autocomplete; titles follow the pattern "[keyword] - [selling point] \| Brand". The countries where CrUX traffic grew are exactly the markets these languages serve | | Yes |
| Programmatic landing pages | 16 tool pages × 14 languages ≈ 224 landing pages, plus 129 blog posts on "how to download / what to do when downloads fail"; between 2026-09-03 and 09-06 about 300 URLs were changed at once (sitemap lastmod) | Yes | |
| Directories and community backlinks | Product Hunt (2 votes), PeerPush, Shipstry, SaaSCity, AlternativeTo, SaaSHub, journaliststoolbox; two dev.to posts. In the founder's words: "So far only one backlink (Product Hunt)" | Yes | |
| Trustpilot | 2026-03 claimed, 23 reviews, 4.4 score, 87% are 5-star; company address listed as the US. Trustpilot notes "no recent review invitations" | Yes (treated as trust signals, not an acquisition channel) | |
| Social / creators | X account with 6 followers and 9 posts; x-radar found no one mentioning savekit in the past year; TikTok search turns up no related videos | No (essentially not done) | |
| Paid ads | The founder says "not a single ad was run"; ads is empty on the card and the ad library has no records | No | |
| Platform event | Google had a spam update from 2026-08-18 to 21 (Search Engine Journal / ALM Corp). SaveKit's CrUX tier jumped in August, right in that window. The update may have cleared out spam competitors, or the timing may be coincidence. Traffic had already started growing in July | Not verified | |

### 5. Why it took off

1. The demand is old and stable, and Google has a lot of transactional searches here. "Download X video, no watermark" gets huge daily search volume in every language, so this is a category where SEO alone can bring traffic.

2. It targets non-English, mobile-first markets that the top sites don't cover well in long-tail terms. Indonesia went from the top 500k to the top 10k, and Turkey and Vietnam both reached the top 50k; English-speaking markets have stayed below the top 500k (CrUX).

3. The localization is more rigorous than most indie download sites: keywords aren't translated, they're researched from scratch in each language; autocomplete is used to verify; Japanese and Korean use abbreviations; in Arabic it goes after Pinterest terms nobody else covers (two dev.to posts).

4. Technically fast and clean: SvelteKit rendered at the Cloudflare edge, good Core Web Vitals, no popup ads, a better page experience than ad-heavy sites like ssstik. This likely helps both rankings and retention (inference).

5. The traffic jump lines up with Google's August spam update, and it may have picked up positions vacated by competitors that were knocked down (unverified).

### 6. Differentiation

- The differentiation on display is only "no ads, no login, no watermark, no redirects," plus one site covering several platforms (IG + TikTok + FB + Pinterest + X + Reddit). "No watermark" is offered by every competitor; "no ads" is also offered by cobalt.tools, which is earlier and better known.

- The real edge is in distribution: it targets longer-tail multilingual terms more granularly than a typical new site. It's running on SEO execution, not on the product itself.

- That edge is hard to defend: templates can be copied, the download capability itself has no moat, and everything depends on platform ToS and how Google treats these sites. 2026-09 rewrote the site copy to "only download content you own or are authorized to use" and added a DMCA page, which looks like compliance prep or groundwork for AdSense. The flat stretch also shows that medium-difficulty terms have been captured, and going further means direct competition with the top sites for keywords.

### 7. Where the money comes from

- The homepage says "completely free, no premium tier." But the Korean privacy policy says "savekit.io runs on advertising," a third-party ad vendor is listed as Google AdSense, and it also says "SaveKit currently serves no ads." The homepage HTML has no adsbygoogle script. So it's still zero monetization, and the next step is AdSense (the standard play for this category: traffic × a low-RPM emerging market). At 210k rank and Indonesian, Turkish, and Vietnamese RPMs, ads might bring a few hundred to a couple thousand dollars a month (rough estimate, unverified).

### 8. Awareness

- Few people know about it: 6 X followers, 2 Product Hunt votes, zero mentions in x-radar, no press coverage. The only things findable are the founder's two dev.to posts (each with minor engagement) and a batch of directory listings. Revenue has never been disclosed.

- Copycats: no site was found that clearly copied SaveKit. But the playbook of "Cloudflare Workers + multilingual download site + dev.to technical write-ups for backlinks" is already common (sdownloader_001 2026-09, tiktok_downloader 2026-11 and others on dev.to), and Product Hunt sees several similar launches every month.

### 9. What others can learn

- A tool site ships 10 languages on day one, treats each language as its own product launch with keyword research: local verb + the category's first modifier (here, "no watermark") + autocomplete validation, with keywords, rationale, and confidence scores stored in the code repo.

- Build landing pages on a "platform × content type × language" matrix, then add troubleshooting posts like "X not working / download failed, what to do" to catch long-tail search.

- Prioritize emerging markets where mobile comes first and searches happen in the native language (Indonesia, Turkey, Vietnam, Latin America). It's easier to reach page one there than in English-speaking markets.

- The approach transfers to other "paste a link / upload a file → get a result" tool categories (format conversion, compression, background removal, etc.).

### 10. Still unclear

- The direct cause of the August jump (Google's August spam update? A competitor going down? An Indonesian head term hitting page one?) can't be confirmed without GSC data.

- Real traffic: only 668/day in the first week. Based on a Tranco rank of 210k, a rough estimate is a few thousand to over ten thousand visits a day (unverified).

- Who the founder is and which country they're in: Trustpilot lists the US; "James Don" is most likely a pseudonym.

- Next monetization step: when AdSense goes live and whether it causes ranking drops.

- Whether growth resumes after the plateau and whether the September spam update (from 09-24) hit it: Tranco has been flat since October.
