# Paste one YouTube link and you get one more search landing page: how a small Hanoi team's English shadowing site climbed to 90k users in 600 days

**What it is** An English shadowing website and app: paste any YouTube video, it gets auto-split into sentences, you shadow them line by line, and AI scores your pronunciation. The web version is free; memberships sell AI credits.

**Why it took off** The domain is the term users search, "shadowing english," which ranks #1 in English search. Every video a user pastes adds one more searchable practice page (about 66k pages, in multiple languages), so traffic from Brazil, Germany, the UK, India and other countries rose together. In October they also ran a campaign where users earn memberships by posting for likes.

**C** **What you can do instead:** don't go head-on in English shadowing. Take the structure (paste a video → sentence-by-sentence shadowing with scoring → auto-generated, indexable pages) and move it to another target language or an exam audience, with exact-match domains, free web pages, and native-language short-video accounts.

Grade C: the approach is worth studying, but English shadowing has been crowded by a dozen-plus players for 2026 years, the key category-term domain is taken, revenue scale is unknown, and it carries YouTube copyright and search demotion risk. Copying it isn't worth it. Word in small circles

Global rank 266k · 90 days ago 863k

A small team in Hanoi built shadowingenglish.com. Its features are close to a dozen similar tools: sentence splitting, shadowing, AI scoring. Its global ranking tripled in 90 days, and the reason isn't the features. It's three things: the domain is the exact phrase users search for; every video a user pastes adds one more searchable page to the site; and the web version is free, so you can start practicing right away. Below: how it grew, where the money comes from, who's competing, and what you can take from it.

### A 400k-view "Mean Girls" clip

In 2026 Aug 9, a TikTok account called @belajarenglishsendiri (Indonesian for "learn English on your own") posted: "Learn English with Mean Girls? Totally possible. I use this one scene to practice shadowing: listen, imitate, repeat, until speaking English becomes a habit." By early November the video had 400k views and 33k likes (TikTok, 11-06). The account had 3,113 followers in total, its bio linked ShadowingEnglish.com, and most of its other videos had only a few hundred views. Its second-best was an Aug 12 video using a Michelle Obama speech for shadowing practice, at 23k views.

The same month, the website started climbing global traffic rankings: it was around #6k in Aug 860 and reached #520k by late August (Tranco ranking). Whether this video was the cause is unclear, but it's the first concrete event I can find in this round of growth.

Open the site and the homepage headline reads "Speak English like the videos you love," with an input box: "Paste a YouTube video to shadow!" Paste a YouTube link, click "Create Lesson," and the video is split into sentences. You shadow each one, and each gets a pronunciation score.

### What it is

- **Web** : videos are sorted by CEFR level (A1–C2), topic, audience (kids, high schoolers, college students, office workers), and exam (IELTS, TOEFL, TOEIC, Cambridge, CET-4/6, CELPIP). Each lesson offers six practice modes: shadowing, dictation, AI conversation (the AI tutor is called Ella), vocabulary, grammar, and roleplay. There are also IPA phonetics lessons, leaderboards, and Group & Classroom, where teachers can create classes and assign homework. The interface supports 18 languages.

- **App** : the Android version is listed on 2026-04-24, and the iOS version, "Shadowing English With Video," is listed on 2026-04-27. The developer is credited as Tung Mac Tran / MAC Entertainment.

- **The same team** also runs shadowingchinese.com, and its footer says "Our Ecosystem."

- **The domain was acquired** : the archived page from 2024 April was still a WordPress sports-news template site. The earliest archive capture of this product is from 2026-07-13, but a Vietnamese teacher's blog, VniTeach, recommended it in May 21, so it launched no later than May.

### How much it grew

| Date | Global ranking (Tranco) |
|---|---|
| 07-30 | 743,178 |
| 08-06 | 863,373 |
| 08-27 | 519,045 |
| September | 400k, flat |
| 10-01 | 429,982 |
| 10-22 | 322,843 |
| 11-05 | 265,669 |

Over 90 days its ranking improved about 3.25×, in two phases: one in August and one in October.

Chrome real-user data (monthly, by tier) is more revealing: globally it rose from the top 1M from June to the top 500k from July onward. **Vietnam stayed in the top 50k from May through September, with no change** . The countries that moved up were all outside Vietnam: Brazil, Germany, Spain, the UK, India, Italy, and the Netherlands moved into the top 500k together between 8 and September; Indonesia and the Philippines moved up around July; and the US entered the top 1M for the first time in September. Vietnam is the base, and this round of growth came from many other countries rising at once.

The app is much smaller: 53k installs on Google Play, 471 reviews, and a rating of 4.8 (10-29); the iOS Vietnam store has 331 reviews, and from 10-28 to 11-07 it gained only 6 more. **Most people use the web version** .

### Where users come from

**First, search.** Searching "shadowing english," "english shadowing practice," and "shadowing youtube video english" in English all put it at #1 (tested in Brave, 11-07). Searching "luyện shadowing tiếng anh" in Vietnamese puts it at #5.

The domain is the search term, and that's half the story. The other half matters more. Its sitemap has about 66k URLs, nearly all of the form `/practice/<video title>-<YouTube ID>`. **Every YouTube video a user pastes automatically generates a practice page with a title and subtitles that search engines can index** , and each page is tagged with language versions in English, Vietnamese, Arabic, Russian, Spanish, French, Chinese, Japanese, Portuguese, Thai, Turkish, and more. The homepage's popular section shows psychology explainers, Vietnamese-titled kids' animations, and HSK Chinese videos. None of these pages were written by the team; users created them while practicing. A similar small site with its own curated library couldn't reach this scale by hand.

There is also a set of hand-written long-tail landing pages: IELTS speaking practice, CELPIP speaking, pronunciation practice, and dictation practice.

**Second, rivals are writing comparison articles about it.** TryShadowing has a dedicated page, "TryShadowing vs ShadowingEnglish." SpeakGain(10-01) and Fluvia both publish "2026 best shadowing apps" posts that rank it first or name it as the main comparison. SpeakGain positions it as the "free pick." Competitors are using its name to catch search traffic, which in turn gives it backlinks and brand searches.

**Third, native-language accounts.** The Indonesian TikTok account opened this piece, and there's also a Vietnamese account, @shadowingenglish_ (993 followers). The numbers are small, but Indonesia's user data moved up in July, and the timing lines up (causation can't be confirmed).

**Fourth, posting for premium access.** From Oct 18 to Nov 18, it ran a "Share for Premium" campaign: users publicly post about it on Facebook, Threads, Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube, tagged #ShadowingEnglish and #ShadowingEnglish.Com. At 200 / 1,000 / 2,000 likes, they receive 1 months / 3 months / 1 year of premium, respectively. The campaign page provides three ready-made captions, all ending with "Search ShadowingEnglish" and without links (the page says in its own words, "posts without links usually travel further"). It also suggests four short-video ideas: screen-record yourself shadowing a line and showing the score, a before/after comparison after 2–4 weeks of practice, a challenge imitating a classic movie line, and sharing three speaking tips. The cost is only premium time, not cash. The climb in October happened at the same time.

**Fifth, Vietnamese teachers.** The site's popular section includes many Vietnamese textbook videos (Global Success Grade 12, Family and Friends, Kid's Box), suggesting teachers bring textbook videos in to assign as student practice (inferred). The classroom feature only just launched in the 1.0.53 version of the app.

**Paid ads: none found.** It doesn't show up in Meta or Google ad libraries (these cover only part of advertisers, so not finding it doesn't mean it isn't advertising).

### Where the money comes from

On the web, shadowing itself is free, and visitors can use it without signing up. Paid premium sells quota. From the benefits listed on the campaign page, the free tier's limits are: only the first 5 sentences of each video get AI scoring, dictation stops at two-thirds, and AI conversation is limited to 20 sessions a day (200 for premium).

Pricing: iOS $4.99/month, $12.99/quarter, $19.99/year; Google Play in-app purchases $4.49–$99.99, including a lifetime plan. The web version charges in local currency and accepts cards, PayPal, and bank QR codes, with a full refund within 7 days.

Revenue can't be determined. The only visible signal: the iOS Vietnam education top-grossing chart fluctuates between ranks 32 and 118, so people are paying, but the volume is unknown. On the leaderboard, the top three longest check-in streaks (160 days, 160 days, 135 days) all belong to premium users.

### Who it's competing with

This category has been packed for 2026 years.

| Product | Scale | How it differs |
|---|---|---|
| Parroto (Vietnam) | 100k Play installs; 3,722 iOS Vietnam reviews; about #448k globally on the web | Stronger than it locally, using its own course library; generating lessons from YouTube costs money; it has been overtaken in global web ranking |
| Daily Dictation | about #82k globally on the web; 260k Play installs | An established dictation site more than three times its size; doesn't focus on shadowing or AI scoring |
| Shadowing English by Tubeshad | 6,160 Play reviews, about 180k installs | Also video shadowing with scoring, more app-oriented and ad-supported; doesn't have this domain |
| 4You (Vietnam) | Play 170k installs, listed 2026-01 | A video-based language app, not web-first |
| SpeakFox | 300k TikTok followers, top single video about 2.6M views; 101 iOS US store reviews | Grew via shadowing challenges using movie clips on TikTok; a content-driven approach, not search-driven |
| TryShadowing, SpeakGain, shadowing.tech, shadoweng.com, englishshadowing.app, and others | shadowing.tech is about #576k globally; the rest are not in the top 1M | Most include built-in courses or charge per use, and can't freely shadow any video |
| YouGlish, Language Reactor, ELSA, BoldVoice | Global ranks from #34k to #279k | Each handles word lookup and pronunciation, learning languages from shows, or pronunciation correction, not "shadow any video sentence by sentence" |

Feature-wise, it has nothing proprietary. What's genuinely different is: **free course generation from any video + web-first + a domain that is the category term** . The first two are really one thing: the input box for pasting videos is also the production line for searchable pages.

Few people know about it: no public revenue, no media coverage, nobody discusses it on X. But other developers already treat it as a benchmark.

### Risks

- **The pages are generated from YouTube videos.** There is copyright risk and YouTube terms risk. Google could also classify large batches of user-generated thin pages as low quality, so the search advantage may not hold.

- **The direct trigger for the August phase is unclear.** It could be that TikTok video, Vietnam's school-start season, a surge in Google indexing, or several of these together.

- **No data on how much each channel contributes.** "Search is the main channel" is inferred from search rankings and the sitemap.

- Team size and first launch date are unverified.

### If it were you

**C. Copying an English shadowing site isn't worth it: the category is saturated, the most valuable domain is already taken, and how much money it makes is unclear. What's worth taking is the approach: turning each user action into a searchable page.**

**Who it's for** : Solo devs with 1–2 years of experience who can build websites and know some technical SEO (sitemaps, hreflang, page templates), and who speak a language that people want to learn but that has no serious shadowing tools. Bonus if you have a channel into a specific exam or a student community in one country.

**Who it doesn't suit** : anyone who wants to go head-on for "English shadowing" (it already holds #1, with a dozen-plus competitors behind it); anyone who wants to rely on app-store organic traffic (its own app has only 50k installs); anyone unwilling to work in a copyright gray area.

**How to do it** : pick a different target language or audience and carry the same structure over: "paste a video → sentence-by-sentence shadowing with scoring → auto-generated indexable page." For example, learners of Japanese, Korean, or Spanish (its team is already doing Chinese, so first check shadowingchinese.com and whether anyone has claimed "shadowing + language name" for your language), or the speaking section of a specific exam. Keep the web version free and require no sign-up, and sell only quota for AI scoring and conversation. Accept payments in local norms. Make page templates richer than its own (vocabulary explanations, hard-sentence breakdowns, level labels) to reduce the risk of being classed as thin content (inferred).

**How to get users** : search is the main channel. Find an exact-match domain for the target term, and set up the sitemap and multilingual tagging on launch day. Then add one or two native-language accounts posting shadowing videos built from movie and show clips, driving traffic to the web version. Once users accumulate, copy the "post for premium" campaign: write the caption templates and video ideas in advance.

**When to start** : search traffic takes months to build, and Google's stance on this kind of page can change at any time. If you're going to do it, launch before the spring school-start season in 2027 to give indexing time.

**What would mean you read it wrong** : ① shadowingenglish.com's global rank drops back beyond 500k over the next month or two, meaning this user-generated page setup got demoted by search engines and the approach doesn't work; ② its iOS Vietnam-store Education Top Grossing chart stays out of the top 200 for a long stretch, meaning the traffic isn't turning into money; ③ in the language you picked, someone already ranks #1 on "shadowing + language name" and is still climbing, meaning that gap no longer exists.

## shadowingenglish.com (ShadowingEnglish): why it's working

> Research day 2026-11-07. Data from our traffic / googleplay / appstore libraries (as of 2026-11-05 to 11-07), the official site, Brave/Exa/Jina search, TikHub, and Wayback.

### One line

A small Hanoi team (developer credited as Tung Mac Tran / MAC Entertainment) built a web + app that splits any YouTube video into sentences for line-by-line shadowing with AI scoring. It took off mainly through **SEO** : the exact-match category domain shadowingenglish.com turns each YouTube video users paste into an indexable practice page (the sitemap has about 66k URLs, with hreflang for 18 interface languages), and it ranked #1 for English searches like "shadowing english" and "english shadowing practice". From 2026-10 it added a UGC referral campaign, "post and earn likes for Premium", alongside its own TikTok accounts. The product has no unique feature in the category; the difference is in **distribution** : the domain, free unlimited web shadowing, generating a course from any video, and multilingual pages.

### 1. What it is

- The website shadowingenglish.com: the video library is sorted by CEFR (A1–C2), topic, audience (kids / high school / university / working adults), and exam (IELTS / TOEFL / TOEIC / Cambridge / CET-4/6 / CELPIP); the homepage lets you "Paste a YouTube video" to generate a course. Each lesson has six modes: shadowing, dictation, AI Talk (AI tutor Ella), vocabulary (spaced repetition), grammar, and role-play. There are also IPA lessons, leveled stories, mini-games, leaderboards, and Group & Classroom (teachers create classes and assign work). (Homepage and About page)

- Pricing: web shadowing is free and unlimited; Premium unlocks the quotas for AI scoring, translation, full dictation, and IPA lessons. iOS pricing is $4.99/month, $12.99/quarter, $19.99/year; Play in-app purchases $4.49–$99.99 (including a lifetime plan). On the web it charges in local currency via card, PayPal, or bank QR, with a full refund within 7 days. (App Store listing, Play, About, /upgrade)

- App: Android version com.shadowingenglish.app, listed for 2026-04-24; iOS version id6763068329 "Shadowing English With Video", listed for 2026-04-27, developer Tung Mac Tran; the same account also publishes a SimpleFilm camera app.

- The same team also runs shadowingchinese.com (the footer reads "Our Ecosystem").

- The domain was someone else's early on: Wayback's 2024-04 capture is still a WordPress sports-news template site. The product first appears in Wayback in 2026-07-13. The Vietnamese teacher blog VniTeach had already written about it by 2026-05-21, so the product was live at least 2026 years ago.

### 2. Growth data

- **Tranco** (traffic library): 07-30 #743,178, 08-06 #863,373, 08-27 #519,045, 09-03 #436,114; September flat around 400k; 10-01 #429,982, 10-22 #322,843, 11-05 #265,669. Over 90 days its rank improved by 3.25x, in two surges: one in August, one in October.

- **CrUX** (traffic library, monthly): global top 1M rose to top 500k starting 2026-06–07. **Vietnam stayed in the top 50k from 05 through 09 and didn't move** . The markets that moved up were outside Vietnam: br, de, es, gb, in, it, nl broke into the top 500k between 08 and September; id, ph, tw moved up around July; au, kr, mx, th, tr, pl, ca were already in the top 500k; us entered the top 1M for the first time in September. → Vietnam is the base, but **this round of growth came from multi-country web traffic outside Vietnam** .

- **App** : Google Play installs 52,931, 471 reviews, rated 4.8 stars (googleplay library 10-29, only one observation point). iOS Vietnam store has 331 ratings; from 10-28 to 11-07 it only gained 6; the Vietnam education Top Grossing chart has bounced between #32 and #118 (appstore library). iOS US store has 81 ratings (iTunes lookup). The /upgrade page says "App Store 563 ratings", presumably summed across stores. → The app's volume is far smaller than the web's, and smaller than Vietnamese peers (see competitors). **Most of the traffic lands on the web** .

### 3. Competitors

| Product | Platform | Launched | Scale (source) | How it differs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Parroto(parroto.app) | Web + iOS + Android, Vietnamese team | iOS 2025-09,Play 2026-06 | Play 100k installs / 1360 reviews; iOS Vietnam store 3722 ratings; web Tranco #447,869, CrUX Vietnam top 5k (traffic) | Stronger in Vietnam: dictation plus shadowing on its own course library, and generating courses from YouTube requires PRO; its global web rank has been overtaken by ShadowingEnglish |
| Daily Dictation(dailydictation.com) | Web + Android | Web presence earlier; Play 2024-07 | Tranco #81,548, CrUX global top 50k, Vietnam top 1k; Play 260k installs | An older dictation-first site, more than 3x bigger, but it doesn't push shadowing or AI scoring |
| Tubeshad "Shadowing English by Tubeshad" | Android (package name com.shadowingenglish) | Not verified | Play 6.16K reviews; recall card logs 180k installs | Same video shadowing-plus-scoring idea, more app-first, with ads; doesn't own this domain |
| 4You: Learn language via video(4English) | Android, Vietnam | 2026-01 | Play 170k installs | Learning languages from video, a peer on Vietnamese charts |
| Saylo / Corodomo / English Town | Android | 2026 | 41k / 34k / 2k installs | Small peer apps, mostly in Vietnam and Thailand |
| SpeakFox(TikTok @shadowing_app) | iOS | 2026-04 | TikTok followers 301,009, top single video about 2.6M views; iOS US store 101 ratings | Grew on TikTok with movie-clip shadowing challenges, following the content-account route |
| shadowing.tech / shadowing.app / TryShadowing / SpeakGain / Fluvia / shadoweng.com / englishshadowing.app | Mostly web | 2026 | shadowing.tech Tranco #575,497; others not in the top 1M | A pile of same-name, same-category small sites, most with bundled courses or credit-based pricing |
| YouGlish / Language Reactor / ELSA / BoldVoice | Web / Chrome / App | Long-established | Tranco 34k / 126k / 112k / 279k | Each does word lookup and pronunciation, watch-and-learn, or accent correction; none is line-by-line shadowing of any video |

Bottom line: this category is **packed** , with a dozen-plus new entrants in 2026 years, and Vietnam alone has several rivals like Parroto, 4You, and Daily Dictation. ShadowingEnglish's features aren't unique.

### 4. Where the users come from (evidence)

1. **SEO plus exact-match domain (confirmed, main channel)** : on Brave, searches for "shadowing english", "english shadowing practice" and "shadowing youtube video english" all rank shadowingenglish.com #1, and it takes two of the top 10 results for "shadowing english". The Vietnamese query "luyện shadowing tiếng anh" ranks it #5, with a /vi/ practice page also in the top 10. The sitemap has 8 shards and about 66k URLs, almost all /practice/<video title-YouTube ID>, meaning **the YouTube videos users paste become indexable pages automatically** (even Chinese HSK and Vietnamese-titled videos), each carrying hreflang for en/vi/ar/ru/es/fr/zh/ja/pt/th/tr and more. There's also a set of hand-written long-tail landing pages: IELTS / CELPIP speaking practice, pronunciation practice exercises, dictation, and so on.

2. **Cited by peers' comparison pages and listicles (confirmed)** : TryShadowing published "TryShadowing vs ShadowingEnglish"; SpeakGain (2026-10-01), Fluvia, NoaLingua and senglish's "best shadowing apps 2026" articles all list it as the top pick or main comparison. Competitors are riding its name for SEO, which in turn gives it backlinks and brand searches.

4. **"Share for Premium" UGC referral loop (confirmed running)** : from 10-18 to 11-18, users post publicly on FB / Threads / IG / TikTok / YouTube with #ShadowingEnglish #ShadowingEnglish.Com. Reaching 200 / 1000 / 2000 likes earns 1 months / 3 months / 1 year of Premium, and the site provides ready-made post copy and video scripts. It coincided with October's second climb. The cost is only membership time, no cash.

5. **Vietnamese teacher communities and B2B2C (partly confirmed)** : VniTeach (a "Giáo viên 4.0" teacher blog) 2026-05 wrote a recommendation. Several popular on-site videos use Vietnamese textbook content (Global Success "grade 12 Unit 4", Family and Friends, Kid's Box, GrapeSEED), suggesting teachers push textbook videos in as practice assignments. Group & Classroom launched in the 1.0.53 version. Vietnam's CrUX has held steadily in the top 50k, which is the base.

6. **Paid acquisition: none found** . Neither the metaads nor googleads library has this domain or brand (those libraries only track listed products, so no hit doesn't mean no spend). The X corpus did not mention it in 90 days.

### 5. Why it took off

- **The domain is the category keyword** : "shadowing english" is itself the user search term, and an exact-match domain plus full product ranks #1 on English search (Brave, checked live).

- **UGC videos automatically become SEO pages** : every YouTube link a user submits adds a landing page with a title, subtitles, and multilingual hreflang. The 66k-page long tail is produced by users for free, a scale that small sites with built-in course libraries can't match.

- **Free on the web, unlimited, no signup** : users land from search and can practice immediately (guests allowed), so the conversion barrier is very low; paid membership only sells AI credits. This keeps it a steady "free pick" in comparison articles (SpeakGain's piece).

- **Multilingual UI plus simultaneous multi-country rollout** : 18 interface languages. CrUX shows br/de/es/gb/in/it/nl rising together over the same two months, so growth doesn't rest on one country.

- **October added a referral campaign and a sub-account matrix** as boosts to the second climb, but their size can't be separated out from the data.

### 6. Differentiation

Functionally (sentence-split shadowing, AI scoring, dictation, AI conversation) it's largely the same as Tubeshad, Parroto, and TryShadowing, so features aren't why it took off. What's actually different is three things: ① **paste any YouTube video to generate a course for free** , where Parroto requires PRO and TryShadowing doesn't support it; ② **web-first and fully free** , where competitors are mostly app-first or credit-billed; ③ **an exact-match domain plus UGC pages for SEO** . ① and ③ are the same thing: the paste-a-video entry point is also the production line for SEO pages. **The differentiation is in distribution structure, not features, and that is why it took off.**

### 7. How many people know about it

It's circulating in small circles. No public revenue, no press coverage, nobody on X talks about it, but peer developers already treat it as a benchmark: TryShadowing has a dedicated comparison page, and SpeakGain, Fluvia, and other list articles mention it. A Vietnamese teacher blog has written about it.

### 8. Copycats

Products with very similar names and positioning, such as TryShadowing (which has a "vs ShadowingEnglish" comparison page and has written list articles since September), SpeakGain, shadoweng.com, englishshadowing.app, and SpeakFox's "Shadowing English" (iOS 2026-04), appeared densely over 2026 years. Who copied whom is unclear, but they're all fighting over the same "shadowing" keywords.

### 9. Takeaways

- Using a UGC entry where "paste one link, get one indexable page" to mass-produce long-tail SEO, with multilingual hreflang on every page.

- An exact-match domain on the category keyword, plus free unlimited web use, monetized only through AI credits.

- "Post, get likes, earn membership time": a zero-cash UGC referral loop, with post copy and video scripts provided on the site.

- One or two native-language sub-accounts (Indonesian, Vietnamese) posting movie-clip shadowing content that funnels to the web app.

- Local currency plus bank QR payment, catering to payment habits in Southeast and South Asia.

### 10. Uncertain

- Revenue scale: ranks #32–118 on Vietnam's iOS Education grossing chart, so there's some paying usage, but the total can't be determined.

- Share by channel: no source data; SEO as the main channel is inferred from search rankings and the sitemap.

- Generating indexable pages from YouTube videos carries copyright and YouTube terms risk; Google may also classify mass UGC thin pages as low quality, so the SEO advantage isn't guaranteed.

- The direct trigger for the first August climb wasn't found: possibly a TikTok hit, Vietnam's school-year start, a burst of Google indexing, or several of these together.

- Team size and first product launch date are unverified.
