Searched a person's name, got a cold email company: Success.ai's ranking tripled, but the gain came from passersby looking up names

What it is A US B2B cold email outreach tool selling a 700M-contact lead database plus unlimited sending, warm-up and CRM, at $39–199 a month.

Why it took off Its batch-generated person profile pages (emails and phone numbers masked, full view behind sign-up) climbed the rankings from 2026-08-18 to 21 after a Google anti-spam update and after RocketReach and Lead411 were knocked down. Most visitors are people searching for names; the cold email category itself didn't grow.

CHow you could follow Don't build a cold email tool or a name lookup site. If you have structured data, copy its approach: one page per record, plus directory pages and competitor comparison pages to capture long-tail search. For cold start, use a lifetime code and a high-commission affiliate program.

Grade C: this climb was a shift in search rankings, not new demand, and most of the traffic doesn't pay. The cold email category is crowded, and person pages require hundreds of millions of records in a compliance gray zone that followers can't access. Only the programmatic page approach is worth learning from. Whispered in small circles

Success.ai is a US cold-email outreach tool that launched in 2023. It sells a lead database plus unlimited sending, at $39–199 a month. Starting August 2026, its global ranking climbed from 150k to 42k over 90 days, and countries that aren't its customers at all, like South Korea, Thailand, Vietnam and Japan, pushed it up too. The product isn't the reason. It has tens of millions of pages that read "so-and-so's email and phone number", and after a Google anti-spam update, those pages picked up the name-search traffic that similar sites lost. This piece covers what it is, where the traffic came from, why that doesn't mean the business got better, and what you can take from it.

A masked email

Open any page under success.ai/profile/, such as a hospital representative in Galena, Texas. The page title reads "So-and-so – Representative at Baylor | Email & Phone | Success.ai". The body shows his work history, education and LinkedIn link. All three emails are masked, showing only the first two letters and the first two characters of the domain:

je\*\*\*\*@bs\*\*\*\*.com

Below is a button, "View Email & Phone Number", which requires sign-up. At the bottom of the page is a set of Q&A blocks ("What is his work email?", "Where does he work?", "Where does he live?") written to match the sentences people type into search boxes. Further down: "Find personal and work emails for over 250M professionals." (Web, read 11-06)

Success.ai has had pages like this since at least 2025 February (the earliest snapshot in the Wayback Machine), along with two directories: /usa-people-directory/state/city/job/ and /company-directory/industry/country/. For over a year it stayed flat. The change came in 2026 August 18, when Google started rolling out an anti-spam update that finished in August 21. Search Engine Land's analysis found that pages ranking in the top 10 dropped out of the top 100 at a rate 82% higher than usual during this update.

The steepest stretch was from mid-August to early September, then it flattened after late October. This ranking lags actual traffic by a week or two. Working backward, the inflection lines up with the Google update.

Chrome real-user tiers show the same direction: globally, it wasn't in the top 1M in July, entered the top 1M in August and the top 500k in September. The US jumped from outside the chart straight into the top 50k, and Australia and Canada entered the top 100k.

Two details show this isn't "more people buying cold email tools":

  • The traffic lands on the marketing site www.success.ai, not the product dashboard app.success.ai. In nearly every country, the marketing site gets the most use. Only India is the dashboard. Real customers have to log into the dashboard to send emails.
  • South Korea, Thailand, Vietnam, Turkey and Japan all entered the chart at once. An English-language B2B outreach tool has no customers in these countries, so the only traffic that could show up at the same time is general search traffic: people searching for a name.

Whose traffic it's taking

The cold email sending tools didn't move at all, which shows demand in this category hasn't changed. What moved is the "someone's email and phone" category: RocketReach and Lead411 were knocked down, and Success.ai came up. Search a foreign person's name plus "email" and the results page shows SignalHire, ContactOut, RocketReach, ZoomInfo and Success.ai together. (Spot check on Brave Search. For several names it ranked #3 or #4. Google results weren't checked directly.) The timing and the competitors line up, but "it took traffic from its rivals' name lookups" is still an inference, since no search backend data is available from outside.

Beyond the person pages, the site has a large number of batch-generated pages: 5,394 AI tool directory pages, 794 blog posts, 100 "Success.ai vs competitor" comparison pages, and 20 free mini-tools (SPF/DKIM/DMARC checks, blacklist checks, email subject line generators). In August 21 it also added a full French version of the site, but France was already in the chart before August, so that wasn't the main driver.

Do the visitors buy?

Most likely not, or at least most don't. People who look up a name want that person's contact details, not a $99 monthly cold email subscription. The masked email plus "sign up to see everything" convinces a small share of sales and recruiting people to sign up, but the traffic from South Korea and Vietnam is mostly passing through (inference; revenue isn't disclosed, and no founder has shared numbers).

Its real business is a different story, built a couple of years earlier by other means:

  • AppSumo lifetime code: "LIFETIME DEAL, Starting at Just $49", now sold out, with 4.5 points / 21 reviews. The founder publicly apologized on AppSumo, saying the lifetime deal originally didn't include leads and a monthly credit was added later.
  • 50% lifetime recurring affiliate program: the /partner page reads "50% lifetime recurring commission", and there's also a white-label reseller program. That's why so many "Success.ai review" and "Success.ai alternatives" articles online carry affiliate links.
  • Bundled pricing: Apollo's data, Instantly's sending, warm-up tools and a CRM packed into a $39–199 plan, marketed as "Truly unlimited". An Australian review tested the founder's email validity at 88% (Apollo 81%), but "unlimited" actually has daily sending caps and lead quotas.

Reviews are polarized: 2 on G2 with 4.8 points and 276 reviews; 2.3 on Trustpilot with 19 reviews, with almost all negative reviews about money. A June 30 review said that after nine-plus months of no login, the account was accessed by someone else, and $320 and $199 were charged the same day. "They refunded only $320, and $199 was kept because the service was already used." Another said an annual auto-renewal charged $1,000, and the company replied that the terms stated auto-renewal and then refunded the full $1,068 (Trustpilot, read 11-06).

The company itself is also somewhat unclear: Crunchbase lists founder Shoukri Kattan as now working in medical AI, with Success.ai listed as a "past position". Its registration address is a registered agent address in Sheridan, Wyoming. Who runs it now and whether it has changed hands is unverified.

No one is specifically copying it, because its two moves, "lead database plus sending bundled" and "person profile pages", are already standard plays in this space. Within the cold email community it's known, but almost nobody outside it mentions it. Of the posts about it on X over the past 90 days, there were 0, and no one has written about "it captured traffic in August through person pages."

If it were you

C. This is a shift in search ranking, not a new demand; cold email tools are already crowded, and a people-lookup database needs hundreds of millions of contact records to pay for itself, which followers can't get. What you can take is the method: turn the database you already have into thousands of searchable pages, and after a big update, watch which peers drop.

Who it fits: people who already have a batch of structured data (products, companies, regulations, drugs, part numbers, schools, place names, open-source libraries) and want to capture long-tail search with programmatic pages; or a data SaaS that lacks a free acquisition channel.

Who it doesn't fit: people building yet another cold email outreach tool (Apollo, Instantly, Smartlead and a dozen veterans are ahead; the race is on price and deliverability); people building a name-lookup site (the data has to be bought or scraped, privacy and compliance are gray, and these pages are exactly what Google's anti-spam updates keep hitting; it rises today and may fall in the next round); anyone expecting this traffic to turn into revenue directly (most people searching names are passersby).

How to do it:

  1. One page per data record, with titles written the way people search ("X email and phone" follows real search habits); show real info on the page, blur the most-wanted field, and use "sign up to view" as the hook.
  2. Add two layers of directory pages (region × category, industry × country) so search engines can crawl deeper level by level.
  3. Add a batch of "you vs competitor" comparison pages and a few free mini tools to capture high-intent keywords; this is the traffic that actually pays.
  4. Don't expect a one-time rollout to be enough: their people pages took over a year to catch the ranking wave.

How to get users: for cold start, follow their early playbook: go to lifetime-deal platforms like AppSumo to get the first users and reviews, then launch a high-commission affiliate program so review bloggers and agencies keep writing "review" and "alternatives" content for you. Search traffic comes in phase two.

Deadline: there's no real window. If you were already going to build programmatic pages, starting now or in six months makes little difference; what to watch is the next big Google update, and within two to three weeks after it rolls out, check which peers dropped and fill the gap fast.

Signs we misread it: (1) after the next Google update Success.ai falls back beyond rank 100k, meaning this kind of page traffic comes fast and leaves fast, so it can only be a side channel, not a main one; (2) they publish revenue or raise new money and growth lands after August, meaning these passersby really are paying, which is worth following more closely than we judged; (3) a new cold email tool that doesn't rely on a lead database, instead on something else (such as truly solving deliverability), breaks into the top 50k by early 2027, meaning the category isn't dead yet.

Sources and data: Global ranks come from Tranco (30-day rolling, as of 11-05). Traffic tiers come from the Chrome User Experience Report (CrUX, 2026-06 to September). Profile pages, the official site, the /partner page and the sitemap come from web pages (read on 11-06). Early snapshots of the page come from the Wayback Machine. Google anti-spam update dates come from the Google Search Status Dashboard and Search Engine Journal, and impact percentages come from Search Engine Land. Search rankings are spot checks on Brave. Reviews come from G2, Trustpilot (read on 11-06) and AppSumo. Prices come from reviews on warmforge.ai and osher.com.au; the official pricing page had no readable body text. Company info comes from Crunchbase, Tracxn and LinkedIn. Anything marked "inferred" or "unverified" is an inference or not yet verified.

Why Success.ai (success.ai) showed up

Channel: web (C1 pool) | research date 2026-11-07 | data: traffic / chromestore / producthunt / metaads / googleads / indie libraries + Jina/Brave web search + Wayback

Bottom line

Success.ai is a US cold email outreach SaaS (lead database + unlimited-sending bundles) that launched 2023 years ago. It first grew via AppSumo lifetime deals and a 50% lifetime-commission affiliate program. Its Tranco rank rose 3.6-fold starting 2026-08, and this was mostly not because more buyers suddenly came in, but because its tens of millions of "someone's email and phone" people-profile pages (www.success.ai/profile/...) started capturing search traffic. The timing lines up with Google's 2026-08 anti-spam update and the ranking declines of peer people-lookup sites RocketReach and Lead411. So most of the traffic is passersby looking up names, not paying customers.

1. What it is

  • The official site (success.ai, read 2026-11-07) says: "700M+ verified contacts", "Join 40,000+ companies", "50,000+ mailboxes using our Sending & Warmup". The product has three parts:
    • Leads: Lead Finder, Buyer Intent, email finding/verification, phone numbers, data enrichment;
    • Outreach: unlimited sending, unlimited warmup, unified inbox, multichannel sequences (email, LinkedIn, phone), AI writing, CRM;
    • Custom: API, done-for-you sending mailboxes (DFY), white-label/agency, LinkedIn/company/headcount datasets.
  • Pricing: a third-party review on warmforge.ai lists Starter $39/month (5 mailboxes), Growth $99/month (20), Infinity $199/month (100), all with unlimited sending and warmup, AI writing metered by quota. osher.com.au quotes roughly $35 / $95 / $200+. The official pricing page is JS-rendered and we didn't capture its body. The recalled card notes $99 / $199, with annual billing at $74 / $149.
  • Company: Crunchbase lists founder Shoukri Kattan with one Seed round, investor BW Ventures; Tracxn records no funding, founded 2017 years ago, registered in Sheridan, Wyoming. Shoukri's LinkedIn says he "founded and led Success.ai as its sole founder", but Crunchbase lists Success.ai as his "Past Role", and he now works on Caesar Health / BitLab (medical AI). Who currently runs the company and whether it has changed hands is unverified.
  • Related assets:
    • Chrome extension "Success.ai - Email Finder": 881 users, rated 5.0 / 10 reviews (chromestore library, 2026-11-07);
    • Product Hunt: launched 2023-11-05 with 351 votes, ranked #1 that day; 2025-03-15 released a Chrome extension, 15 votes (producthunt library);
    • No mobile app.

2. Growth data: where the gains came from and when

Tranco rank (traffic library rank_day, 30-day rolling average):

09-0362,790
10-0154,837
10-2241,902
11-0541,554

The steepest stretch was from 08-13 to 09-03. Tranco lags real traffic by 1–2 weeks, so the real inflection was roughly mid-to-late August; after late October it largely flattened.

CrUX tiers (traffic library crux_domain):

  • Global: 2026-07 outside the top 1M → 08 top 1M → 09 top 500k.
  • US: 08 top 100k → 09 top 50k (5–July not on the list).
  • AU: top 500k → top 100k; CA: top 500k → top 100k.
  • From 08 to September, BR, DE, ES, FR, GB, IT, MX, NL, PL, TR, ID, KR, TH, VN, JP also newly entered the list or moved up a tier.
  • In nearly every country, the best origin is https://www.success.ai; only India's is app.success.ai.

How to read this data:

  • The traffic lands on the marketing site www, not the product app.
  • South Korea, Thailand, Vietnam, Turkey and Japan, none of which are the core English-speaking markets for B2B outbound calling tools, charted at the same time too, which means the growth is coming from broad search traffic, not from the target customers.

Peer comparison over the same period (traffic library rank_day):

Cold-email sending tools (Instantly, Smartlead, lemlist, Reply) are flat overall, so demand in this category hasn't actually exploded. The moves are concentrated in the contact-profile sites: RocketReach and Lead411 are falling, Success.ai is climbing.

3. Growth tactics (evidence)

3.1 Programmatic SEO on person profile pages (main cause, confirmed to exist; the causation is inferred)

  • The pages follow three templates:
    • www.success.ai/profile/<name>-<id>, with titles like "Jehan Kareem – Representative at Baylor | Email & Phone | Success.ai". The page shows a masked email (je**@bs**.com), a LinkedIn link, an FAQ ("What is XX's work email?"), then a "View Email & Phone" prompt to sign up. The page says it finds personal and work emails for over 250M professionals.
    • www.success.ai/usa-people-directory/<state>/<city>/<title>/, a three-level directory, e.g. alabama/akron/account-director.
    • www.success.ai/company-directory/<industry>/country/<country>.
  • These pages have been around for a while: Wayback has captured /profile/ pages since 2025-02, with dense captures from 2025-05; the earliest snapshot of /usa-people-directory/ is 2025-05-12. So the 2026-08 surge isn't a feature launch, it's a ranking change.
  • They do rank: searched on Brave (not Google, reference only):
    • "Ramzey Nassar email": success.ai/profile ranks #3, sandwiched between SignalHire, ContactOut, RocketReach, ZoomInfo, and Lead411;
    • "Christina Hawatmeh email phone number": ranks #4;
    • "Chadha Strategy Consulting owner email": ranks #12.
    • A few terms it doesn't make the top 20 for; those spots are held by RocketReach and ZoomInfo.
  • Platform event: Google's August 2026 spam update began on 08-18 and finished rolling out on 08-21. Google's Search Status Dashboard and Search Engine Journal both logged it; Search Engine Land said the share of top-10 URLs dropping out of the top 100 was 82% higher than usual. In the same window RocketReach and Lead411 fell sharply while Success.ai rose. The timing lines up, but "it took search traffic from its rivals" is an inference; no Search Console or Semrush data confirms it directly.

3.2 Other SEO assets (confirmed)

  • The main site's sitemap has 13,176 URLs, including:
    • 5,394 /ai-tools/ AI tool directory pages, 2025-04/05 batch-generated;
    • 794 blog posts;
    • 226 data-post dataset intro pages;
    • 100 success-ai-vs-<competitor> comparison pages (Apollo, Instantly, ZoomInfo, Clay, Lusha, Smartlead…);
    • 20 free tools, including SPF/DKIM/DMARC and blacklist checks and a subject-line generator.
  • 2026-08-21 Full-site republish, adding a French version /fr/ (6,584 hreflang=fr entries). CrUX's FR bucket was already in the top 500k in August, so French isn't the main driver this time.
  • The person profile pages are not in this sitemap; they have another entry point. Every sitemap_index URL we tried returned 403.

3.3 Affiliates and lifetime deals (confirmed; this is how it got going early)

  • success.ai/partner: "50% lifetime recurring commission", plus a VIP Certified Partner tier and a white-label agency program. affcobra.com lists the rules as 100% on the first $1000, then 50% for life.
  • Third-party reviews (osher.com.au) use get.success.ai/... affiliate links, and there are many "Success.ai review" YouTube videos and blog posts.
  • AppSumo lifetime deal: sold out, 4.5 points / 21 reviews; a Facebook ad reads "LIFETIME DEAL, Starting at Just $49". The founder publicly apologized on AppSumo, saying the lifetime deal "initially didn't include leads" and that a monthly lead allowance was added later.
  • This explains its G2 276 reviews, the "40,000+ companies" claim, and the wave of "Success.ai alternatives" articles (warmly.ai, enginy.ai, and moderninbound.com are all writing them).

3.4 Paid ads (unknown)

Neither the metaads nor the googleads library matched it. It isn't on our tracking list, not finding it doesn't mean it isn't advertising.

4. Competitors

Copycats: none specifically copying it. "Lead database + unlimited-sending bundle" and "person-profile SEO" are both industry-standard plays.

5. Differentiation, and whether that's why it took off

  • Product differentiation: it bundles Apollo (data) + Instantly (sending) + warm-up tools + CRM into a single $39–199 plan, marketed as "Truly unlimited". osher.com.au's test: email validity for Australian SMB founders was 88% (Apollo: 81%), saving 50–200 AUD a month versus buying separately. The downside: "unlimited" still has daily sending caps and lead quotas, and data coverage is thin outside Australia and the EU.
  • Polarized reviews: G2 4.8 points / 276 reviews, Trustpilot 2.3. Negative reviews cluster on "can't cancel", "hard to get a refund", and "lost data"; AppSumo also has "Avoid Success.ai".
  • Is this what drove the rise: no. This round's 3.6x traffic growth is on the www's broad search pages, timed to Google's algorithm update and a rival's decline, while the sending-tool category as a whole was flat. Product differentiation explains how it held its ground in the cold-email scene for 2023–2024 years and got paid; this round's breakout is the SEO assets cashing in on a platform event.

6. How many people know about it

  • Known in cold-email and outbound circles: G2, Capterra, AppSumo, with competitors writing "Success.ai alternatives" articles to intercept its traffic.
  • Revenue isn't public: no record in the indie database, no TrustMRR listing, and no founder posting revenue.
  • Our X corpus mentioned "success.ai" 0 times in the last 90 days.
  • We haven't seen anyone write up "person-profile SEO capturing August traffic".
  • Verdict: it's circulating in a small community.

7. What to borrow

  1. Data products can turn the database itself into programmatic SEO pages (person, company, industry × country, state × city × title), with a huge long tail; each page carries a "view full email and phone" sign-up hook.
  2. After a major Google update, watch which similar sites get knocked down and move quickly to take their share.
  3. Cold start: use an AppSumo lifetime deal to bring in users and reviews first, then use a 50% lifetime commission to have review bloggers and agencies keep producing "review / alternatives" content for you.
  4. 100 "us vs. competitor" pages plus free DNS/deliverability tools, targeting commercial-intent keywords.

8. Still unclear

  • Actual Google indexing and click volume for the profile pages (only spot-checked on Brave).
  • A direct causal link between RocketReach and Lead411's declines and its rise.
  • Whether it's running Google or Meta ads.
  • How much traffic converts to paid, and how much revenue it brings in.
  • Whether the founder has left or the company has changed hands.
