A free API the day after the new model dropped: Token Harbor climbed from 610k to 120k in three months
What it is An OpenRouter-style AI model gateway: one key calls major LLMs, one command hooks it into Claude Code, with a free quota and small plans starting at $0.99.
Why it took off The day after DeepSeek V4.1 Flash beta launched, it offered a free API. YouTube tutorial creators passed invite codes to developers in India and Southeast Asia, and every two or three weeks it swapped in another hot model for a limited free run, with traffic stepping up each time.
CHow you could use this Don't build another gateway. Instead, take the rhythm of "free access the day new models ship + early invite codes for tutorial creators" and apply it to your own developer AI product.
Global rank 122k · 90 days ago, top 1M+
An AI model gateway whose domain was registered only in April, with no funding news and no big-name endorsements, and an official Discord of just 657 members, yet it pushed its global site ranking up 500k places in three months. What it got right isn't the product, it's an operating rhythm: whenever a hot new model launches, it's wrapped as a free API the next day, giving "free API key tutorial" YouTubers something to talk about. The trick works, but a whole cohort of peers is already using it.

2026 年 9 月 10 日,YouTube 频道 Code With Yousaf 发了一条视频,标题是《DeepSeek V4.1 Is Here! Get FREE API Key & Try It Before Release》(DeepSeek V4.1 来了!
In Sep 8, DeepSeek opened a two-day limited beta of V4.1 Flash. On day two, Token Harbor's changelog read "Flash Beta just landed on Token Harbor" and routed it as a free model. On Sep 11, SEO blogger Julian Goldie posted "How to use DeepSeek V4.1 Flash API for FREE!" (24k views), and at second 14 of the timeline it says "go to tokenharbor.ai and sign up." His Reddit community and LinkedIn followed with several posts in a row.
In those few days, anyone searching "how to use DeepSeek V4.1" got answers pointing to the same website.
What it is
Token Harbor (tokenharbor.ai) is an OpenRouter-style model gateway: one API key calls Claude, GPT, Gemini, DeepSeek, Qwen, GLM and others, and it supports both OpenAI and Anthropic interface formats. It caters especially to coding-agent users: the homepage gives a command that, once run, points Claude Code, Codex or opencode at its endpoint, and Cursor and Cline can print their config directly.
It's operated by Singapore's TH TECHNOLOGY PTE. LTD. The domain was registered 2026-04-17, it launched in August, and it's a new site, not an old domain under new ownership. It does not serve mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau, Russia or Iran.
How much it grew
Global site rank (Tranco): in Aug 27 it first broke into the top 1M, at rank 610k; Sep 10 380k; Oct 1 248k; Nov 5 122k. It climbed about 500k places in three months and has not slipped back, and in the last 30 days it nearly doubled.
Where its users are is also clear. Chrome real-user data shows that in 9 it reached the top 100k in Indonesia, India, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam, while in the US, UK, Germany, Japan and Brazil it only reached the top 500k. The core audience is South and Southeast Asia.
By contrast, its own channels are tiny: on Product Hunt its Aug 6 launch got only 88 votes and placed #15 on the daily board; the official YouTube channel has 19 subscribers; Discord has 657 members (11-07). Almost all traffic comes from others.
Where users come from
Free as soon as a new model launches. After the DeepSeek V4.1 Flash run, it repeated the move several times: in Sep 20, Qwen 3.8 Flash was free for 7 days; in early October, Claude Haiku 5.5 went free for a limited time; in mid-October it swapped in a new version of DeepSeek V4.1 Flash. Each swap gave tutorial creators a fresh video to make, and the ranking climbed a step with it.
Tutorial creators with invite codes. A YouTube search turns up 17 videos that mention it, with roughly 110k views combined, almost all about "how to get a free API key": besides English there is Spanish (OTorresDev, 11.4k views) and Persian. Many descriptions carry invite codes. The official FAQ says the cash invite rewards for regular users have ended, but "creator and partner links continue to pay out under their own terms": creators get a separate revenue share, though the amount wasn't found.
A landing page per model. "DeepSeek V4 Flash API," "Anthropic API (Claude): key & pricing," "Best OpenRouter Alternative in 2026," "3 Best Free AI APIs for Coding"... Blog posts are bylined by several AI personas publishing daily, and posts in the on-site community are also written by bot accounts. These pages all catch search traffic for "free xx API."
Free chat. In Sep 28 it launched TH-Rudder, a free, unlimited-message chat with no credit card required, on the same domain; Southeast Asian countries breaking into the top 100k in September coincides with this (inferred; we can't separate how much came from the API versus chat). In late October, chat moved to its own domain, rudder.chat, and it began running consumer-oriented short videos on Instagram and Facebook.
No paid ads were found, but that doesn't mean it isn't buying them.
Where the money comes from
Free isn't free. The price is in the FAQ: prompts and replies sent through the free router may be read by staff and shared with third-party analytics, and the upstream providers of free models may use them for training. Quotas are on a rolling 7-day window, capped at 60 requests per minute. October also dropped the early $5 signup credit and the daily reset.
Paying is a very low step:
| Tier | Pricing | incl. usage | What you get extra |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | rolling 7-day free quota | DeepSeek V4.1 Flash, MiMo V2.6 Flash, TH-Rudder |
| Agent Pass | $0.99 first month, then $1.99/mo | $10 (some models count at $20) | Faster DeepSeek, MiniMax, Haiku 5.5 and more |
| Office Pass | $9.99/mo | $35 | Claude Sonnet 5.5, Grok 4.7, Qwen3.8 Max |
| Frontier Pass | $99/mo | $180 | Claude Opus 5.5, Fable 5.1, GPT-6 Astra |
Source: tokenharbor.ai/pricing, 11-06. Pay-as-you-go top-ups get a 100% first-top-up match (capped at $100; spend $1 to unlock $1, anti-abuse). Revenue isn't public and nobody has reported it. Who covers the upstream cost of the free models (model vendors subsidizing, upstreams trading for data, or the company burning its own cash) is not visible from outside.
Who's competing
This is a crowded category, and from 2026 through 8 to November the whole "free AI router" niche rose together:
| Product | Global rank 11-05 (8-27) | Approach |
|---|---|---|
| OpenRouter | 3,850(5,099) | Category leader with the widest model lineup; doesn't rely on "new model free" marketing |
| AgentRouter | 73k (116k) | Signup gives a big $125 credit to pull in Claude Code users |
| OrcaRouter | 110k (500k) | Nearly the same curve as Token Harbor; 0 markup, bring-your-own key, privacy |
| UnoRouter / TeamoRouter / NaraRouter / FreeRouter | 180k, 370k... | Free tokens daily, usable with zero balance |
| ZenMux, AIHubMix, Requesty, NanoGPT | 100k–160k | Pay-as-you-go gateway; ZenMux also made Haiku 5.5 free for a limited time in October |
| Poe, T3 Chat | 13k, 230k | The chat layer that corresponds to Rudder.chat |
When Claude Haiku 5.5 went free for a limited time in early October, people on X were already posting roundups like "Haiku 5.5 free on three platforms"; Token Harbor was just one of them. Its features (one command to connect Claude Code, native Anthropic endpoint, free tier) are things OpenRouter and this group of routers already have or could easily add. What actually made it take off was operational speed, and operational tactics are the easiest thing to copy.
If it were you
Bottom line: Copy its playbook, don't build the same product. Another free-model gateway makes you the 15th-plus entrant, and you have to carry your own inference costs, upstream relationships, payment risk control and anti-abuse.
Who it fits: Small teams that already have a developer-facing AI product (a coding-agent plugin, a writing tool, an AI app) and want to bring in a batch of new users from emerging markets at low cost; or people who already have cheap inference capacity and can negotiate promo quotas with model vendors.
Who it doesn't fit: Anyone starting from scratch to build a "better OpenRouter" (gateways have no moat, and the leaders plus a dozen peers are already there); anyone who can't afford inference bills of thousands to tens of thousands of dollars for each free promo; anyone unwilling to accept terms that let free-user data be read and trained on.
How to do it: Move its rhythm onto your own product. Watch the model release calendar and make your product "free to use this new model" on launch day or during beta. Offer one-command setup for tools like Claude Code and Codex to cut onboarding friction after a recommendation. Give free quotas on a rolling 7-day basis, priced by value, then use a small $0.99 first-month plan to convert heavy users to paying.
How to acquire users: Before the next hot model launches, line up 10–20 mid-tier YouTubers making "free API key" and "use Claude Code for free" tutorials (in English, Spanish, Hindi, Indonesian), give each one a revenue-share invite code, and send them the material on launch day. Also prepare a "how to use xx API for free" landing page for every new model.
When to do it: Get this ready before the next big model launch. The tactic rides the window of "everyone searching how to use it within 48 hours of release"; a day late and the window belongs to someone else.
What would show you read it wrong: ① tokenharbor.ai's ranking falls back below #200k within two or three weeks after rudder.chat splits off, meaning the growth was mainly chat, not developers; ② it tightens or drops the free tier again, meaning free-model costs are unsustainable and this tactic is more expensive for followers; ③ at the next hot model launch, more than five platforms are free for a limited time and tutorial video views clearly drop, meaning the window has already been split up.

Why Token Harbor (tokenharbor.ai) took off
Research date 2026-11-07. Data sources: our traffic library (Tranco / CrUX), producthunt library, the official site pages (read via Jina), YouTube Data API, Jina/Exa search, public Discord invite endpoints, RDAP.
One line
A Singapore company, TH TECHNOLOGY PTE. LTD., registered the domain in 2026 April and launched an OpenRouter-style multi-model API gateway in August (dual OpenAI + Anthropic protocols). What made it take off wasn't the gateway itself but giving away a freshly released popular model's API for a limited time every few weeks. 2026-09-09 DeepSeek V4.1 Flash beta launched and free routing went up the next day. A group of "free API key" tutorial YouTubers (Code With Yousaf, Julian Goldie and others, some with invite codes) amplified it, pulling in mainly developers in India, Southeast Asia and Latin America who had no credit card or couldn't afford a Claude subscription and wanted free models for coding agents like Claude Code, developers who want free models plugged into coding agents. In late September it also launched a free unlimited chat, TH-Rudder (now spun off as rudder.chat), under the same domain, adding consumer traffic to tokenharbor.ai.
1. What it is
- A model gateway with OpenAI-compatible
/v1and Anthropic-native/v1/messages, a curated model lineup (Claude, GPT, Gemini, DeepSeek, Qwen, GLM, MiniMax and more), marketed on "no model swapping" and "paid routes don't train on your data." Source: homepage, FAQ, /docs/compare/openrouter. - One command repoints Claude Code / Codex / opencode / OpenClaw / pi to Token Harbor (
curl -fsSL https://tokenharbor.ai/connect.sh | sh); Cursor / Cline / Zed print their config. Source: /connect. - Pricing: Free (rolling 7-day quota, current free routes DeepSeek V4.1 Flash, MiMo V2.6 Flash, TH-Rudder); Agent Pass $0.99 first month, then $1.99 (includes $10 usage, some models count up to $20); Office Pass $9.99 (includes $35, adds Claude Sonnet 5.5 etc.); Frontier Pass $99 (includes $180, adds Claude Opus 5.5 / Fable 5.1 / GPT-6 Astra). Pay-as-you-go first top-up gets a 100% match (within 14 days, capped at $100, locked, spend $1 to unlock $1). Source: /pricing, /faq.
- The price of the free route is in the FAQ: prompts and replies sent through the free route may be read by staff and shared with third-party AI analytics, and the upstream providers of the free models may use them for training. In effect, free quota is paid for with your data.
- Does not serve mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau, Russia, Iran and other regions (see FAQ supported regions).
- No iOS app found; traffic mostly lands on the web (console / playground / chat). From late 2026-10 the consumer chat was split out to its own domain, rudder.chat (YouTube "Meet Rudder.chat" 2026-10-23; the Instagram @rudderchat account is posting consumer-oriented material such as Halloween content).
- Entity: TH TECHNOLOGY PTE. LTD. (Singapore, UEN 202630148W); the domain was registered 2026-04-17 (RDAP), not a transfer of an old domain; on LinkedIn the CEO is William Song, since 2026-04.
II. Growth data
- Tranco (traffic library): 2026-08-27 first entered the top 1M, rank 610,895 → 09-10 379,985 → 10-01 247,631 → 10-22 152,263 → 11-05 122,070. It has kept rising without a pullback, and in the last two weeks it has added 1–2 thousand places per day.
- CrUX (traffic database): global top 2026-08M → 2026-09 top 500k in 1; 9 monthly, Indonesia, India, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam are each top 100k; the US, UK, Germany, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Brazil, Mexico, Canada, Australia and others are top 500k. Southeast Asia and South Asia clearly lead, which suggests the core users are in emerging markets.
- Product Hunt (producthunt database): launched 2026-08-06, 88 votes, #15,7 on the day's chart with comments; the PH product page has about 134 followers. Tiny scale, not a source of growth.
- Discord: 657 members, 52 online (Discord invite API, 2026-11-07). Official YouTube has 19 subscribers. The official owned channels are all small. The traffic comes from others.
- rudder.chat is not yet in Tranco's top 1M (traffic database).
III. Competitors
| Product | Form | Launched | Scale (Tranco 2026-11-05; figures in parentheses 08-27) | How it differs from Token Harbor |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| OpenRouter | Web / API | 2023 | 3,850(5,099) | The category leader, with the widest model lineup and several :free models, but it doesn't market with 'free on new model launch'. TH wrote an 'OpenRouter alternative' SEO page to siphon its traffic. |
| AgentRouter | Web / API | 2025 | 73,370(115,981) | Gives a large signup credit ($125, Habr 2026-08-16 article). A 'credit-giving Claude Code relay' with a Chinese-team background. TH gives no signup credit and instead offers time-limited free models. |
| OrcaRouter | Web / API | 2026 | 109,563(501,314) | Nearly the same growth curve over the same period. Pitches 0 markup, BYOK, auto-routing and privacy. |
| UnoRouter / TeamoRouter / NaraRouter / FreeRouter | Web / API | 2026 | uno 179,452 (977,614 charted on 08-06); teamo 372,890 | Same 'free AI routing' wave: daily free tokens, usable with zero balance on DeepSeek and others (listed together in Habr articles). |
| ZenMux, AIHubMix, Requesty, NanoGPT, LiteLLM, Portkey, Kilo Gateway | Web / API / open source | 2024–2025 | 79k–156k, varying | Leans paid, enterprise gateway or self-hosted open source. Does not use 'free new models' as a hook. |
| DeepSeek / Qwen official APIs, Vercel AI Gateway | big tech | — | deepseek.com 978 | Official sites require top-ups and payment is hard in some regions. TH sells 'no card needed, free first'. |
| Poe, T3 Chat and other chat aggregators | Web / App | — | poe 13,331;t3.chat 230,337 | Rudder.chat competes at this layer: free unlimited chat with automatic model selection. |
Bottom line: this is a crowded category. Over 2026 8–November the whole 'free / credit-giving AI routing' space rose together (AgentRouter, OrcaRouter, UnoRouter and Token Harbor's curves all climbed). Token Harbor is one player in this wave, not an outlier.
4. How users arrive (growth tactics)
- 'Free the moment a new model launches' event marketing (core, confirmed). DeepSeek 2026-09-08 opened V4.1 Flash as a two-day limited beta, and 09-10 released it officially. TH's changelog reads '09-09 Flash Beta just landed on Token Harbor' and it was listed as a free route. Then:
- 09-10 Code With Yousaf 'DeepSeek V4.1 Is Here! Get FREE API Key & Try It Before Release', 34k views, description includes TH invite code TH-892X-K4X8;
- 09-11 Julian Goldie SEO two videos (23.7k and 15.9k views), and 09-14 his Agency account posted two more. Julian Goldie's r/AISEOInsider ran several posts in a row ('DeepSeek With Hermes Agent Makes Token Harbor Look Wild', etc.), mirrored on LinkedIn;
- 09-10 X user @pengsonal posted a tutorial with an invite-code link; r/dealhunt shared it as a 'freebie'; perks sites like iterm.today picked it up.
- Then the same play repeated: 09-20 Qwen 3.8 Flash free for 7 days (Code With Yousaf 7,452 views, Berzaf). Around 10-09, Claude Haiku 5.5 was free for a limited time (Code With Yousaf 7,386, Md Al Mamun, @zefirium on X summarizing 'free Haiku 5.5 on three platforms', Facebook 0 xSojalSec).
- Using the YouTube Data API we found 17 videos mentioning Token Harbor, about 110k views in total. Nearly all are 'how to get a free API key' tutorials, in English, Spanish (OTorresDev 11.4k) and Persian (Cynet). Source: YouTube Data API 2026-11-07.
- Invite / creator links (confirmed to exist, reward details not verified). Every account has a permanent invite code. The FAQ and /docs/billing/referrals say cash invite rewards have 'ended', but 'creator and partner invite links continue to pay under their own terms', which means there are separate payouts to creators. There was also an early $5 signup credit (@pengsonal's reply: '$5 free API credits to new users'; the official blog's 10-26 update notes the $5 signup credit, daily reset and Enhanced Access have all been discontinued). Instagram has claims of 'get another $50 with an invite link' (unverified).
- Programmatic SEO (confirmed). One landing page per model (e.g. 'DeepSeek V4 Flash API — $0.44/1M in', 'Anthropic API (Claude) — key & pricing'), 'Best OpenRouter Alternative in 2026', '3 Best Free AI APIs for Coding', and comparison articles. The blog authors are AI personas of reporters (Desmond Park, Mara Whitfield, Iris Calderon, with avatar filenames th-reporter) publishing daily. Posts in the site's 'Tharbor' community are generated by bot accounts named th-bot-0xx. All of this lays down surface area for searches like 'free xx API'.
- Free chat TH-Rudder → Rudder.chat (launch confirmed, contribution unverified). 2026-09-28 Instagram announced 'TH-Rudder launches Token Harbor Chat, free, unlimited messages, no credit card', entry at tokenharbor.ai/chat. Southeast Asian countries broke into the top 100k on CrUX in September, in the same period. In late October it was spun off as rudder.chat, with consumer-facing content for Facebook, Instagram and YouTube Shorts.
- Product Hunt / directories (confirmed, small scale). PH: 08-06 88 votes. Listed on directories such as TAAFT, stork.ai, neurokitai and softwarehope. A Russian-language Habr roundup of '6 free AI routers' (08-16).
- Paid ads: none found. Our metaads / googleads / tiktokads databases show no match (these databases only track products on their lists, so no result doesn't mean no spend). The Facebook page has organic video posts 61595764441024.
V. Why it took off
- Timing: coding agents going mainstream + subscriptions are expensive. Tools like Claude Code, Codex, OpenClaw and Hermes Agent burn through tokens. Indie developers in emerging markets can't afford them or lack international credit cards. 'Free API key to plug into Claude Code' is a long-running, high-search demand on YouTube. TH's connect script and native Anthropic endpoint make 'free model in Claude Code' a one-step setup.
- Riding new model launches: during the DeepSeek V4.1 Flash two-day beta window, everyone searched for 'how to use it', and TH offered a free API the next day, which tutorial authors naturally used as the answer. This was the direct trigger for the curve's acceleration in mid-September (Tranco 09-10 380k → 10-01 248k).
- One-off freebies became a recurring cycle: a new hot model went free every two to three weeks (DeepSeek → Qwen 3.8 Flash → Claude Haiku 5.5 → DeepSeek V4.1 Flash 1017). Each time gave tutorial authors fresh material, so traffic stepped up in tiers.
- Making free sustainable: free routes collect data (readable by staff, usable for upstream training), credits are capped on a rolling 7-day basis and at 60 requests per minute. Heavy users are then converted to paid with a $0.99 first-month Agent Pass and a 100% match on first top-up. In October it tightened signup credits and daily resets to control costs.
- Consumer chat on top: TH-Rudder's free unlimited chat pulled non-developer traffic onto the same domain. CrUX's jump across Southeast Asian tiers fits this (inference; we could not split how much comes from the API versus chat).
VI. Differentiation
Versus OpenRouter: one command to hook up coding agents, native Anthropic protocol (no shim for Claude Code), always-on free credits, and a promise not to swap models quietly. Versus relay services like AgentRouter: no big signup credit, but 'time-limited free new models' plus a cheap Pass. The difference that actually drives traffic is the operating rhythm of 'free on new-model launch + feeding material to tutorial authors', not gateway features. OpenRouter and many routers have gateway features, and they can all connect to Claude Code. The feature-level differences (connect script, Anthropic endpoint) only lower the friction once someone has been referred.
VII. How many people have seen it
- Revenue is not public. We found nothing on TrustMRR or in founders' revenue posts. No media coverage, and no major accounts on X (no hits in the local x-radar corpus over 90 days). Official Discord has 657 members and YouTube has 19 subscribers.
- But it spreads well within the small 'free AI API' circle: mid-tier YouTube tutorial channels, Julian Goldie's SEO community, Habr roundups, r/dealhunt and perks sites.
- Copycats / peers: the same wave already includes OrcaRouter (up from 500k to 110k over the same period), UnoRouter, TeamoRouter, NaraRouter and FreeRouter. ZenMux also made Claude Haiku free for 5.5 (summarized by @zefirium). The play is already widely used and the space is crowded.
8. What others can borrow
- Watch the model release calendar, go free on the launch day or during beta, and send invite codes and tutorial scripts to 'free API key' YouTubers in advance.
- Price free credits by value rather than count, on a rolling 7-day basis, and pair them with data terms on the free route so the free portion gets something back.
- A small $0.99 first-month Pass as the first step from free to paid. The first-top-up match uses 'locked, unlock one for every one spent' to prevent abuse.
- One command rewrites Claude Code / Codex config, targeting the concrete scenario of 'swap coding agents to a cheaper model'.
- Programmatic SEO: every model, every provider and every 'X alternative' gets a landing page.
IX. Uncertainties
- How much traffic comes from the API console, playground and chat (TH-Rudder) can't be separated. Whether tokenharbor.ai's curve slows after rudder.chat's spin-off needs another two to three weeks to check.
- Whether creators are paid for partnerships and how much: there are claims of invite codes and 'separate rewards for creator links', but the specific terms are unverified.
- Who pays for the free models' upstream costs (model vendors' promotional subsidies, data trades with upstream providers, or TH's own spending) is unverified.
- Team background: Singapore entity, CEO William Song. It refuses service to mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau, yet it is compatible with Cherry Studio and discussed on nodeloc (a Chinese-language forum), so the team may have Chinese-speaking members. Unverified.
- Whether it runs paid ads: our ad databases show no match, which does not mean it doesn't.
