# Search "where is Subarna Express now" and the first result is a side project: How TrainKothai catches Bangladeshi train passengers with 500 web pages

**What it is** A free live train-tracking site for Bangladesh: one page per train, showing position, delays and arrival times. Data comes from GPS shared by passengers on board and the official timetable. No sign-up.

**Why it took off** Checking official train location costs 5 taka by SMS, and rivals all went app-first. It made the web page itself a usable product, built 500+ train and route pages targeting search terms, took the top two spots on the main queries, and launched right as holiday travel season hit.

**C** **How you could follow** In a country where public transport runs late every day, official live tracking isn't free, and search results are empty, copy the playbook: one page per train, timetable as fallback, capture the search terms paid queries use, and push users from web to app to collect GPS. Treat it as a side project for audience and reputation.

Grade C: the SEO playbook is clean and worth studying, but Bangladesh already has a 590k-install leader and copycats, most neighboring markets are already taken, and the ceiling from ads and cheap subscriptions is low. Following it isn't worth the effort. Buzz in niche circles

Global rank 245k · 90 days ago, top 1M+

Checking where a train is in Bangladesh officially means a paid SMS of about 5 taka. A Flutter-teaching indie developer built TrainKothai, a free crowdsourced location tool. Rivals all went app-first; only it made the web page a usable product, with a findable page for every train. Five months in, the site climbed from nobody to roughly global rank 250k, the highest traffic among Bangladeshi tracking sites. But it's second in the category: its app has about a third of the leader's installs. The web SEO approach is worth copying; the market is not worth entering.

### One train page

Opened on the morning of Nov 7, trainkothai.com/track/701 is titled "Subarna Express (701) Live Location & Tracking — Chattogram to Dhaka." Subarna Express is an intercity train from Chattogram to Dhaka, departing at 07:00 and arriving at 11:55. The top of the page shows the train's current position, distance to the next stop, and whether it's on time. Below are three stops, coach classes, and which days it doesn't run. Further down is a table of the last 7 trips' delays: 10-30 late 78 min, 11-04 late 59 min, 11-05 late 11 min, averaging 34 min.

At the bottom is a Q&A: "What time does Subarna Express depart and arrive?" "Does it run today, and which days does it not run?" (Answer: no service on Mondays.) "Where is Subarna Express now?" (Answer: see the top of the page, updated every 30 seconds from passenger GPS and station reports). Google ads are interspersed, with Google Play and App Store download buttons at the very bottom.

These three questions are exactly what passengers type into search. On Nov 7, searching "subarna express live location" on Brave, the 1st and 2nd results were the two directional pages for this train, 701 and 702.

### What it is

Bangladesh's "where's the train" problem: passengers on board open "I'm on the train" in the app, and their phone GPS anonymously updates the train's position. When no one is sharing, it estimates from the official timetable and fills gaps with positions from the official 16318 SMS. Free, no sign-up.

The author, Abu Anwar, is a Google-certified Flutter Developer Expert and runs the YouTube channel The Flutter Way. This is a side project he built alone ("where's the train" in Bengali). The domain was registered in May 2026, and the Android version didn't go live until May 8 (21). The website came first, the app came later.

### How big the site got: global rank went from 940k to 245k in five weeks

What we have is global traffic rank, not absolute visit counts:

- Tranco rank (averaged over 30 days, lagging real traffic by a week or two): 10-01 rank 940k → 10-15 rank 595k → 10-29 rank 303k → 11-05 rank 245k. 90 days ago it wasn't in the top 1M.

- Chrome real-user buckets (monthly, through September only): before July 1M, before August 500k, before September 100k.

- Compared with the Bangladesh peers (11-05 rank / September Chrome tiers): the official railway site railway.gov.bd is 71k / top 50k, the ticketing platform shohoz.com is 66k / top 50k; the train-tracking site bdtraintracking.com only reaches the top 500k tier; the category leader Gatishil's site gatishil.com, and the copycat trainkothay.com, are both outside the top 1M.

In other words, a side-project site registered only half a year earlier sits one bucket below the official railway site in September. A global rank of 250k roughly corresponds to tens of thousands of daily visits (estimate, not verified).

The timing fits: on Sep 15 the founder posted on LinkedIn, "48k+ downloads in the last 28 days, this is the power of SEO and AEO." Rank is a lagging indicator; the real surge came from mid-September into October.

### Where users come from: 500 pages, each matched to one search phrase

The sitemap has about 520 URLs, nearly every one aimed at a type of search:

| Page | Quantity | Aimed at |
|---|---|---|
| /track/train-number | 226 pages, one per train per direction | People searching "[train name] live location / where is it now" |
| /route/route | 32 routes, e.g. Dhaka to Cox's Bazar, Sylhet | People searching "trains from Dhaka to [place]" |
| /bn/… | 261 Bengali mirrors | People searching in Bengali |
| /live-board | 1 pages, Dhaka station platforms and delays for departures in the next 90 minutes | People waiting at the station |
| /train-tracking-sms | 1 | People searching how to send the official paid SMS "16318" |
| /train-ticket-online-booking | 1 | People searching how to buy tickets online |

The cleverest is the SMS page, titled "Train Tracking BD SMS — 16318 Code, Cost & Free Alternative." People searching "how to send an SMS to track a train" land there and read "SMS costs money, this is free." The ticketing page does the same, borrowing a high-volume search term unrelated to its own content. Every page carries FAQ structured data, making it easier for Google's summaries and AI answers to quote directly.

11-07 results on Brave: "train location bangladesh" 1st, "train tracking bd" 2nd, "bd train live location" 2rd and 8th.

The web pages catch search traffic, then push people into the app: GPS sharing can only happen in the app, so every page has a download button. On Google Play, 10-29 has 131,916 installs and 11-06 has 170,511. The founder says no money went into ads, and we found no record of paid campaigns (absence of records isn't proof of none). Other channels were small: a self-promo post on Reddit r/Dhaka, Facebook groups, and a press release on Nov 4.

### Where the money comes from

The website runs Google AdSense, and the app has ads. Revenue isn't public. Ad rates in Bangladesh are low, so likely not much (inference). Rival Gatishil sells a subscription at 20 taka a month, under $0.2. The category's price anchor is that 5-taka SMS.

### Why it's only second place

Same need, but Gatishil's BD Train Tracking launched earlier. 11-06 has 590,127 installs on Google Play, and in the last 7 days it added +180k, more than four times TrainKothai's weekly gain. It requires a Google account to sign in and sells a subscription. What pushed it ahead was 3D maps getting filmed for short videos on Facebook and TikTok, plus coverage from the local outlet Jagonews24. Its website gets almost no traffic, but it's still the leader.

The two took different routes: Gatishil used short videos and media to get people straight into the app; TrainKothai used search to get people using it on the web first. It won the web side and lost the app side. More accurately, the whole Bangladeshi "where's the train" category is breaking out, driven by a public-service gap and holiday travel; TrainKothai took the web slice through SEO.

There's also a weak spot printed at the top of every page: "LIVE DATA For 34 trains, more add soon." Of 226 train pages, only 34 trains have live passenger GPS; the rest show positions estimated from the timetable. How many users bounce when they find it inaccurate isn't visible from outside.

Copycats have already arrived: TrainKothay (trainkothay.com) differs by one letter, launched in Oct 24, also builds SEO landing pages, and ranks 4–7 on several search terms.

### If it were you

**Grade C** : the "one page per train, capture the search terms of paid alternatives, web first then push to app" playbook is clean and worth learning, but following this product itself isn't worth it.

**One-line verdict** : Bangladesh already has a 590k-install leader, a second place that owns the search, and a string of copycats; a tool like this has a low ceiling from ads and cheap subscriptions.

**Who it's for** : you live somewhere rail or long-distance buses run late every day and official free live location doesn't exist, you speak the local language, and you want a side project that builds audience and reputation. Abu Anwar got 170k users, local media coverage and a DevFest talk, not revenue.

**Who it's not for** : anyone who wants to make money from it; anyone wanting to squeeze into Bangladesh again; anyone not on the ground who can't get train data and passenger word of mouth.

**How to do it** : Search for "[train number] + live location / where is" in the local language and in English, and see who ranks in the top three. Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Egypt already have players. Look for a country with tens of millions of riders where the top three results are empty or just tutorial pages. Launch web-only first: timetable estimates plus whatever official data you can get, so every page has content on day one. Add an app later to collect passenger GPS.

**How to get users** : One page per train, per route and per major station. Make the title the exact phrase riders search for, and put three or four Q&As at the bottom. Build a dedicated page that captures the search terms people use to find the paid official lookup. Ship local-language mirrors at the same time. Launch two to three weeks before a holiday rush, when people travel home.

**Read the numbers right** : ① TrainKothai's weekly app installs overtook Gatishil's, which shows "web + SEO" can beat "short video + subscription". Copy that elsewhere. ② Someone has publicly reported ad revenue from this type of tool, over a few thousand dollars a month. ③ If you find a country with a huge rider base where the top three results for "where is the train" are still not a real product, don't hesitate.

## trainkothai.com (TrainKothai) research report

Research date: 2026-11-07. Data from our traffic library (Tranco / CrUX), googleplay library, plus live checks of the website, Brave search results and public web pages. The iOS side of the same product has its own report: out/ios_6786984387.md; the main rival BD Train Tracking has reports at out/play_com.gatishil.bdtrainguide.md and out/ios_6791611007.md.

### One line

A crowdsourced live train tracker for Bangladesh. Riders on a train tap "I'm on the train" in the app to share GPS, so others can see the train's position, delays, next station and ETA. When nobody is sharing, it falls back to official timetables and 16318 SMS data. Free, no signup required. **trainkothai.com is the web version of the product, not just the app's homepage** : every train and route has a live-status page that works directly, with Google AdSense, and it pushes users to download the app. Built by one person, Abu Anwar, a Google Flutter GDE and host of the YouTube channel The Flutter Way.

### Verdict

It works because **Bangladesh railways have no free official live lookup** , and because **the founder treated the web as the main acquisition channel and did SEO for it** . Most local competitors are app-first. It is the only one that made the web version a usable product and built pages around search terms, so it has no real rival on the web side: it ranks #1–2 on Google/Brave for "train tracking bd", "train location bangladesh" and train-name searches. CrUX global tiers: July top 1M, August top 500k, September top 100k. The rival gatishil.com doesn't make the top 1M at all. The website captures search traffic and sends it to the app (Play 170k installs). However, across the whole category it is second place: its app installs are only about 1/3.5 of Gatishil's "BD Train Tracking", and in the past week Gatishil has grown faster through 3D short videos on the map and local media. **Web SEO is its edge and the reason it reached second place among the challengers; but the category itself took off because of the demand gap and holiday travel.**

### Data

**Website (traffic library)**

- Domain registered on 2026-05-08 (Verisign RDAP), a new site, not an aged domain changing hands. Android listing on 05-21, website came before the app.

- Tranco rank: 10-01 940,119 → 10-08 877,577 → 10-15 595,392 → 10-22 399,765 → 10-29 302,835 → 11-05 245,409. 90 days ago it wasn't in the top 1M. Tranco is a 30-day rolling average and lags real traffic by 1–2 weeks, so the real surge landed from mid-September to October. That matches what founder 09-15 said on LinkedIn: "48K+ downloads in the last 28 days, driven by SEO & AEO."

- CrUX global (real Chrome users, monthly, through September only): 2026-07 top 1M → 08 top 500k → 09 top 100k. In the country rankings it appears only for India (08 and 09, both top 1M). Bangladesh is not in CrUX's 21 country list, so no national tier is visible.

- Benchmarks (traffic library, 11-05 Tranco / September CrUX global): official railway.gov.bd 70,938 / top 50k; ticketing platform shohoz.com 65,885 / top 50k; train-tracking peer bdtraintracking.com not in Tranco / top 500k; railwayticket.bd, trainjatri.com, trainlivelocation.com and trainkoi.com are all in the top 1M tier; rival gatishil.com and the copycat trainkothay.com are both outside the top 1M. **trainkothai.com has the most traffic of any Bangladeshi train-tracking site, only one tier below the official railway website in September's CrUX tiers.**

- No absolute traffic figures. A Tranco rank around 250k roughly corresponds to tens of thousands of visits a day. This is an estimate, unverified.

**App (googleplay library)**

- com.theflutterway.trainkothai: 10-29 131,916 → 11-03 166,723 → 11-06 170,511 installs, rating count 11-07 at 6,016. 11-02 and 11-03 each +10.8k, then slowed.

- Rival com.gatishil.bdtrainguide over the same period: 507,643 → 590,127,11-02 +78k, 11-05 +82k.

- iOS: Apple has no Bangladesh store. iOS shows only faint signals in diaspora stores (355 ratings in the US store, see the iOS report).

**Where the traffic lands** : The web is the entry point (search → train page), and the app is where retention and crowdsourced data come from, since only the app can share GPS. By installs, users are mainly in the app; by acquisition, the web is where it pulls ahead of rivals. No data on the web-to-app user split, unverified.

### What the site looks like (2026-11-07 live checks)

- Next.js site, English main site plus Bengali mirror at /bn. Sitemap of about 520 URLs: /track/<train number> 226 pages (one per train, e.g. /track/701 and /track/702 are the two directions of Subarna Express), 32 routes at /route (Dhaka to Cox's Bazar, Sylhet, etc.), 261 mirror pages under /bn, plus /live-board (Dhaka station platforms and delays for departures in the next 90 minutes).

- Landing pages built for search terms: /train-tracking-sms (titled "Train Tracking BD SMS — 16318 Code, Cost & Free Alternative", capturing people searching for the paid SMS code, then telling them the website is free) and /train-ticket-online-booking ("How to Buy Train Tickets Online in Bangladesh", capturing ticketing traffic).

- Pages carry FAQPage structured data, Google Play and App Store download buttons, and Google AdSense (ca-pub-2615152904914285). The website can earn ad revenue on its own.

- The homepage reads "LIVE DATA For 34 trains, more add soon": only 34 trains have live crowdsourced data, and the other train pages show only the timetable-estimated position.

### Competitors

| Product | Where | Launched | Scale | How it differs from trainkothai.com |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| BD Train Tracking(Gatishil Ventures) | Android + iOS + gatishil.com | Android 2026 early in the year (AppBrain 04-13 already 50k+) | Play 590k installs, 7 days +180k; website not in Tranco / CrUX top 1M | Category leader, app first, requires Google login, has a ৳20/month subscription. Drives installs through 3D Facebook / TikTok ads on the map and Jagonews24. The website gets almost no traffic |
| TrainKothay(Saadel Lab) | Android + trainkothay.com | 2026-10-24 | A few thousand installs; the website ranks #4–7 in search results but is not in the Tranco top 1M | Name differs by one letter, copies the name; also runs 3D and an SEO landing page at /live-train-tracking-bd/ |
| railwayticket.bd /live-train-tracking/ | Web | Not verified | CrUX top 1M | Ranks #1 for "train tracking bd"; it's a content / tutorial page, not real GPS |
| bdtraintracking.com | Web | Unverified (not yet in July CrUX) | CrUX before September: 500k | Same kind of web tracker, roughly one tier smaller |
| trainlivelocation.com, bd-live-train-tracking.vercel.app, railwayticketgovbd.com, trainjatri.com, bdrailwayinfo.org, trainkoi.com | Web | Mixed | All in the top 1M tier or below | Most use timetable estimates or tutorial SEO, with no crowdsourced GPS |
| Official 16318 SMS / Banglalink Train Tracking | Carrier SMS | Years ago | Nationwide | Official GPS data is accurate, but costs about 5 taka per query and is text only. TrainKothai plugs it in as a data source and also built a page to capture the search term "16318" |
| BR Explorer | Android | Legacy product | Not verified | Paid for official data, charged per query |
| Rail Sheba / eticket.railway.gov.bd (official) | iOS / Android / web | 2024 | railway.gov.bd Tranco 71k | Only sells tickets and looks up timetables, no live position |
| Where Is My Train (India, acquired by Google) | Android | 2015 | Hundreds of millions of installs | A model prototype that doesn't cover Bangladesh |

### Where users come from

1. **SEO / AEO (confirmed)** : The founder credited September's breakout directly to "SEO & AEO" on LinkedIn. The site has 226 train pages and 32 route pages, a Bangla mirror, landing pages for SMS and ticket-booking keywords, and FAQ structured data. Brave search (11-07): "train location bangladesh" #1, "train tracking bd" #2, "bd train live location" #2 and #8, "subarna express live location" #1 and #2 (train pages from both directions), "16318 train tracking" #10 (the top 9 results were taken by Indian trains with the same number). The climb in the traffic library's Tranco / CrUX curves lines up with this period.

2. **Web drives App installs (confirmed)** : Every page has Play / App Store download buttons, since shared GPS only works inside the App.

3. **Reddit r/Dhaka self-promo posts, Facebook page and groups (presence confirmed, engagement unverified)** : See the source in the iOS report.

4. **Local media (confirmed)** : 11-04 issued a press release, with Deepto News 11-05 and IT Bangla Media 11-06 following up. The timing came after Jagonews24 had covered rival 11-02.

5. **The founder's developer reach (confirmed; the audience is peers, not riders)** : 23.6k LinkedIn followers; 10-24 gave a talk at DevFest Troy on "side project, 5 months, 100k downloads".

6. **Paid ads (not found)** : The founder says zero ad spend; it does not appear in our Meta / Google ad libraries (the ads field in the data card is empty, and the ad libraries only track listed products, so not finding it there doesn't mean it wasn't run).

### Why it's working

- Unmet need: Bangladesh Railway has no free official live-location lookup, only 16318 SMS costing about 5 taka per query; about 350 trains run daily nationwide, and delays are the norm (Deepto News 11-05).

- Web first, no install or signup: someone searching "where is train X now" lands straight on the train page and sees it. Rivals are App-first, so the web side was empty (traffic library: gatishil.com is outside the top 1M, and its own CrUX was 100k before September).

- Pages built systematically around search terms: 226 train pages plus a Bangla mirror, along with landing pages for high-frequency terms like 16318 SMS and online ticket booking. It held positions #1–2 for the main search terms (Brave 11-07).

- Timing: built and launched in May, in time for the Eid al-Adha return travel; the 9–October growth overlaps with festival travel seasons such as Durga Puja (inference).

- Network effect from crowdsourcing: the more App users, the more trains with real-time data (now 34 trains), and the more useful the web pages become. Each side feeds the other.

### Differentiation

Compared with Gatishil and other Apps, its difference is **the web page is the product, plus SEO** : you can see live position without installing an App or signing up, every train has a searchable page, and the site runs AdSense itself. Compared with same-category sites on the web (railwayticket.bd, bdtraintracking.com, etc.), its difference is **real crowdsourced GPS and an App behind it** , not tutorial pages or pure timetable estimates. That gap is why it ranks second among newcomers and first on web traffic; but it hasn't overtaken Gatishil. Crowd scale and 3D short-video distribution are currently on the rival's side. 3D maps are offered by both, so it's no longer a differentiator.

### How many people have seen it

It's spreading in small circles. The founder posted download numbers on LinkedIn and talked about growth at DevFest, so developer circles know about it; local Bangladeshi tech media began covering it in early November. Revenue isn't public, there's no TrustMRR listing, and X corpus search turns up nothing (see the iOS report, x-radar 0 posts). Someone is already copying it: TrainKothay differs by one letter in name and also runs SEO landing pages.

### What to borrow

- Look for public transport with official real-time data that is paid or closed (Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Egypt, some African rail and long-distance buses): launch the web first, one page per train and per route, use timetables to fill pages from day one, then collect crowdsourced GPS through an App.

- Capture search terms for paid alternatives: make a page explaining how to send the official paid SMS, what it costs, then offer the free alternative.

- AdSense on the web, AdMob in the App, so both sides can monetize; a new site can reach the global top 250k within 4–5 months.

- A local-language mirror (/bn) plus FAQ structured data, to win both Google and AI answer engines.

### Unknowns

- No data on actual web traffic, the web-to-App user ratio, or AdSense revenue.

- It only appears in India in CrUX; whether this is West Bengal users, VPNs, or a statistical artifact is unverified.

- Only 34 trains have real-time data, and most train pages on the web are really timetable estimates; how many users arrive, find it inaccurate, and leave is unverified.

- CrUX data after September isn't out yet; Tranco still shows it rising quickly through October. Whether it gets pushed down by Gatishil's App momentum after November needs more observation.
