# A Tbilisi programmer ate ESPN's blind spot in search with "UFC schedules" across 13 languages

**What it is** A free MMA schedule site that turns fights, matchups, fighters, scorecards and pay from 12 promotions, including UFC, PFL, ONE and RIZIN, into pages in 13 languages. It also sells app subscriptions, a data API and ad space.

**Why it took off** The domain is the search term "UFC calendar." English top results are taken by ESPN, so it went after "UFC schedule" in Turkish, Korean and Japanese first, landing at #1 to #4, then fed on the long tail with huge numbers of matchup and fighter pages.

**A** **How you could follow it** Don't go head-to-head in MMA. Move to another sport (boxing, tennis, F1, darts, cricket, esports) and copy the "exact-match domain + public data + multilingual programmatic pages" approach, targeting non-English languages nobody seriously covers, and launch two or three months before the new season.

Grade A: the play is clear and transferable, few people know about it, and it even hides its SEO data. Two bets to make: whether Google will crack down on mass-produced template pages, and how much money a sports site with hundreds of thousands of monthly visitors can make (its revenue is not public). Few people know about it yet.

Global rank 136k · 90 days ago 643k

UFCalendar is an MMA schedule site. Its domain was registered only in May this year, and in half a year its global ranking climbed from outside 640K to 136K. It bought no ads and nobody is talking about it on social networks. With one domain and public data, it spread across 13 languages and over forty thousand pages. The approach works just as well for other sports, and few people know about it yet.

### Before the Nov 7 Fight Night

This Saturday (Nov 7) UFC has a Fight Night at the Meta Apex in Las Vegas, with Cortes Acosta vs. Walker in the main event. Fight fans in Istanbul who want to know the start time will search "ufc takvimi" (Turkish for "UFC schedule"). 11-06 The top result isn't the UFC official site or the Turkish broadcasters TV+ and S Sport. It's an English-domain site titled "UFC Takvimi 2026", ufcalendar.com. In Korea, searching "UFC 일정" puts it second, behind only UFC's official Korean site. Searching "ufc calendar" in English, it ranks third, behind ESPN and ufc.com and ahead of CBS and Paramount+ (Brave Search, 11-06; the ranking on Google was not verified).

The site is run by Mate Bersenadze, a Python backend engineer in Tbilisi, Georgia. His Toptal profile lists over 7 years of experience as a freelancer. Each blog post on the site is signed "Publisher of UFCalendar." His method is to mine the database for angles. In October he wrote about the scorecards for UFC 330: Makhachev landed not a single significant strike in round five, yet all three judges still gave him the round. ESPN wouldn't write that kind of piece, but hardcore MMA fans will share it.

### What it actually is

An MMA calendar spanning 12 promotions, including UFC, PFL, ONE, RIZIN, KSW, OKTAGON and BKFC. Every event, matchup and fighter has its own page, plus scorecards, fighter pay, odds movement, 2013 years of ranking history, and pages like "what fights are on tonight" and "this weekend." The data is all public: UFC results come from the official stats site ufcstats.com, other promotions use their own official sites, gaps are filled from Wikipedia, and pages refresh every minute during live events. Its sitemap has roughly 47K URLs, multiplied by 13 languages.

The site is free. Money comes from three sources:

| What's sold | Pricing | Who it's sold to |
|---|---|---|
| UFCalendar Pro (live app scores, lock screen, watch, reminders, AI Q&A) | $5.99/month or $59.99/year, 7-day trial | Hardcore boxing fans |
| Fight Data API + hosted MCP (lets AI assistants query the data directly) | 1,000 free calls per month; $19 / $49 / $149 per month | Developers, people making predictions and content |
| Ad slots, which can be bought for a single language | Not disclosed | Sponsors |

Revenue is not disclosed. The ad page claims over 95K monthly visitors and 325K pageviews, with 2.9 pages per visit (self-reported by the site, unverified). The iOS app was listed only in Sep 28, with just 2 ratings in the US store; the Chrome extension has 1 users. **Almost all the traffic is on the web.**

### How it climbed

Its global traffic ranking (Tranco) moved like this:

| Date | Global rank |
|---|---|
| 2026-08-06 | 642,956 |
| 2026-09-03 | 285,441 |
| Mid-September to mid-October | Stuck at 26–290K |
| 2026-10-22 | 223,876 |
| 2026-11-05 | 136,142 |

In 90 days its rank improved nearly 5-fold, with another acceleration in late October. The ranking lags real traffic by a week or two, so the true jump likely happened in early to mid October. The cause is uncertain: newly added matchup and blog pages may have been indexed, or a Google algorithm update may have landed at the same time.

More telling is **where it rose first** . In Chrome real-user data, in July it first squeezed into the top 500K sites in Mexico, Turkey and South Korea, and it wasn't yet on the global list. By September, more than a dozen countries including Australia, Brazil, Germany, France, the UK, Japan and Indonesia had it in the top 500K, while the US only had it in the top 1M. **It built traffic in non-English countries first, then pulled in English.**

### Why this one

- **The domain is the search term.** Read out, ufcalendar.com is "UFC calendar." Registered in May 8, it was first called "Ultimate Fighting Calendar" and was English-only.

- **When you can't beat English, go to other languages.** The top spots for English "ufc calendar" were locked up by ESPN, ufc.com and CBS. For the Turkish, Korean, Japanese and Spanish terms for "UFC schedule," the competition is local small sites and broadcasters, and one clean, complete, fast-updated page can rank near the top: #1 in Turkish, #2 in Korean, #4 in Japanese. For "ufc fighter salaries" it also ranks #1.

- **So many pages it can capture the long tail.** One page per matchup, one per fighter, one comparing two fighters, one for fighter salaries, plus seven or eight "X vs Y: how X wins" prediction articles before each big card. Anyone searching "is there a UFC tonight" or "what time is so-and-so fighting" is likely to land on one of them.

- **One calendar covering 12 promotions.** Big players cover only the UFC and a few major promotions, leaving fans of smaller ones like ONE, RIZIN and OKTAGON with nowhere to check. Fans who finish one event want to see the next, and that's how each visit ends up with 2.9 pages.

- **Well hidden.** Its robots.txt blocks crawlers from SEO tools like Ahrefs and Semrush, so rivals can't look up its keywords or backlinks. At the same time it fully allows live retrieval by ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity, and every event page carries a dedicated "result summary for AI citation" block at the top. How much traffic AI search brings is still unclear.

### Who it's competing with

| Competitors | Scale (global rank) | How it differs |
|---|---|---|
| Tapology | About 7,200 | Community-driven, the most complete data, but English-only with heavy pages |
| Sherdog | About 20k | 1997-year-old track record library, dated UI |
| ufc.com and the UFC App | About 12k | UFC only, with Korean, Japanese and Portuguese subsites |
| ESPN / CBS schedule pages | Top players | Holds the top English keywords. No small events or matchup pages. |
| next-fight.com | About 350k (90 days ago: 650k) | The closest like-for-like, also growing, but with no deep data pages |
| Local Turkish sites like ufc-izle.com and tekvurus | Not verified | Turkish only, UFC only |
| The Fight Calendar(iOS) | 4 ratings | Indie apps launched in the same period, with no web traffic |

The MMA schedule niche isn't short on players. What's missing is someone who uses one database to turn every fight and every fighter into pages in 13 languages that all show up in search. I haven't seen anyone copying it.

### Can you ride it?

Going head-to-head in MMA isn't worth it. It already owns the multilingual spot, next-fight and similar sites are growing, and you'd be building a new domain from zero.

What you can actually take is the formula: **an exact-match domain + public, structured data + programmatic pages × a dozen-plus languages, starting with non-English languages where competition is weak.** Here's how to apply it to other projects:

- **Boxing, tennis, F1, darts, snooker, cricket, esports.** Pick projects where English top results are held by big sites like ESPN and BBC, but no one seriously covers other languages. Each one has public data available (federation websites, Wikipedia, official stats sites).

- The test is simple: search "X schedule" in Turkish, Korean, Japanese, Spanish and Indonesian. If the top five are broadcaster platforms and ad-heavy local sites, there's an opening.

Two things to bet on. First, Google has a specific policy against mass-generated content, and 40,000+ template pages could be demoted at any time. UFCalendar's answer is that every page carries real, live-updated data and bylined analysis articles. You need to meet that bar too. Second, money. A sports site with 100k monthly visitors makes maybe a few hundred to a couple thousand dollars a month from display ads alone (estimate). UFCalendar is stacking subscriptions, an API and per-language ad slots, but how well those convert isn't visible from the outside.

### If it were you

**In one line:** Worth doing, but treat it as an SEO and data-engineering project, not a product. Swap in a different sport and a different set of languages, and replicate the formula: domain + public data + multilingual programmatic pages.

**Who it suits:** A backend engineer who can write scrapers and data pipelines can do this alone, the way Bersenadze did. Ideally you're a fan of the sport yourself and can write something like the Makhachev scorecard article. Having a weakly competed-over language, as native or second language, is a plus.

**Who it doesn't suit:** Anyone who wants to start with an app or subscription (its app has had only 2 ratings in over a month; all its traffic comes from web search). Anyone who can't wait six months for results (it registered in May and was still 600k+ places down in August). Anyone who doesn't understand or care about data sources and update mechanics: one wrong schedule and users don't come back.

**How to do it:** Pick the sport and languages first. Manually search "X schedule / X calendar" in the target language and see who holds the top five. Then buy an exact-match domain, connect one authoritative data source, and auto-generate three page tiers: events, matchups, fighters. Build answer pages for "tonight / this weekend / start time / where to watch", and put JSON-LD structured data on each page. Once the English version works, expand into other languages. Times, time zones and broadcasters must be localized, not just the titles translated.

**How to get users:** Organic search is the whole game. A week before each major event, publish a few data-driven preview and recap articles under real bylines. Get a few backlinks by listing on MCP and API directories. You can copy its approach of blocking SEO-tool crawlers so competitors can't see through you easily. Once traffic builds, stack monetization in order: ad slots, a data API from $19, then a subscription app.

**When to start:** Sports schedules are seasonal. Ideally launch two to three months before the new season of your chosen sport so pages get indexed first. For example, tennis starts in January and F1 in March, so if you want to catch the 2027 season, you need to start now.

**What would mean you got it wrong:** ① ufcalendar.com's global rank drops back below 300k over the next two to three months, meaning Google has pushed down the programmatic pages and the formula needs discounting. ② It starts cutting language versions, or turns the site into a paywall or ad-heavy layout, meaning the multilingual long tail can't sustain the business. ③ Three months after launch you still can't crack the top 20 for schedule keywords in your target language, meaning local sites there are stronger than they look, and you should switch languages.

## UFCalendar (ufcalendar.com): why it works

### One line

A Georgian indie developer (Mate Bersenadze, Python backend engineer) registered the exact-match domain "UFC calendar" in 2026-05 and connected data from ufcstats.com, official event sites and Wikipedia into a programmatic SEO site of about 47k pages in 13 languages (covering schedules, fighters, single matchups, scorecards, salaries, odds). In six months it climbed to Tranco 136k. Traffic comes almost entirely from organic search, especially "UFC schedule"-type queries in non-English markets. Monetization is stacking up: a Pro subscription, a developer API with MCP, and directly sold ad slots. Revenue is not public.

### What it is

- Website: an MMA schedule aggregator covering UFC, PFL, ONE, RIZIN, KSW, OKTAGON, BKFC, ACA, Cage Warriors, BRAVE, FNC and Jungle Fight. Page types include: events, single matchups (/events/{event}/{bout}), fighters, comparisons, historical standings (back to 2013), scorecards, Robbery Index, fighter salaries, odds, predictions, pick'em, a Wordle-style fighter guessing game, and a blog in 13 languages. Sources: homepage, /about, /llms.txt (read 2026-11-07).

- Data sources: UFC results are based on ufcstats.com, other promotions on their official sites, with Wikipedia filling gaps. During live events, data is polled every minute (/about).

- Monetization:
    1. UFCalendar Pro is $5.99/month or $59.99,7/year, with a free trial. It unlocks the native app (Live Activities, widgets, Apple Watch, reminders) and in-site AI Q&A. The website itself is free (source: /app).
    2. Fight Data API: free tier at 1,000 requests per month, paid tiers Hobby $19, Pro $49 and Business $149 per month, including a hosted MCP server (47 tools) and Python/TS clients (sources: /developers, /llms.txt).
    3. Direct ad sales: /advertise claims 95k+ monthly visitors and 325k+ page views, with 2.9 pages per visit. Users are led by the US, followed by Japan, Germany, France, Turkey and the UK, and the site claims to have "one of the largest Russian-language MMA audiences online." Sponsorships can be bought per language version.

- App: iOS "UFCalendar: MMA Fight Cards" (id6809232216), listed 2026-09-28, with only 2 ratings in the US store (iTunes lookup, 2026-11-07). Not yet on Google Play for Android; the APK is available only from the website. The Chrome extension has 1 users (chromestore library). **Nearly all traffic is on the web. The app and extension haven't taken off.**

### Growth data

- Domain registered on 2026-05-08 (Verisign RDAP). A Wayback snapshot from 2026-05-16 shows it was called "Ultimate Fighting Calendar", English only, with ufcstats and Wikipedia listed as data sources.

- Tranco (traffic library rank_day):
    - 2026-08-06 is 642,956
    - 09-03 is 285,441
    - Mid-September to mid-October hovered at 26–290k
    - 10-15 255,887,10-22 223,876,10-29 154,130,11-05 136,142
    - So growth accelerated again in late October. Tranco lags real traffic by 1–2 weeks, so the real jump likely came in early-to-mid October.

- CrUX (traffic library crux_domain):
    - **2026-07 first entered the top 500k in mx, tr and kr** . jp, de, fr, es and id reached the top 1M. It wasn't yet on the global list.
    - 2026-09: global top 1M. au, br, ca, de, es, fr, gb, id, jp, kr, mx, nl, ph, pl, th and tr all in the top 500k. us only in the top 1M.
    - Verdict: the non-English, non-US markets took off first; the US is lagging

- The site claims 95k monthly visitors (per /advertise, unverified).

- The sitemap has 32 shards with about 47,481 URLs, plus events-hot and fighters-hot shards in 13 languages and a news sitemap (48 new articles in 8 hours, 2026-11-07 crawl).

### Competitors

| Competitors | Platform | Launched | Scale | How it differs from UFCalendar |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tapology | Web + app | Around 2009 | Tranco 7,199 | Community-driven, covers every promotion and event, the most complete data, but English only and page-heavy |
| Sherdog Fight Finder | Web | 1997 | Tranco 20,482 | Veteran fight-record database, dated UI, few languages |
| ufc.com / UFC App | Official | 2012 (App 47k ratings) | Tranco 11,762 | UFC only, no cross-event calendar, but official kr/jp/br sub-sites exist |
| ufcstats.com | Official data | — | Tranco 61,220 | UFCalendar's upstream data source; doesn't do schedule UX or SEO itself |
| Schedule pages on ESPN / CBS / Yahoo / Sporting News | Big-company features | — | Top players | Ranks #1 for the English query "ufc calendar"; doesn't cover small events or non-English long tail |
| Schedules on MMA Junkie / MMA Fighting / MMA Mania | Press | — | Tranco 3–50k | Schedules attached to news sites, not databases |
| next-fight.com | Web | Not verified | Tranco 349,335 (90 days ago 646,259) | The closest peer: a multi-promotion schedule aggregator, also growing, but about half the scale |
| sync2cal / calendarx | Web | Not verified | Tranco about 35–380k | Does "subscribe to calendar," with UFC as just one category |
| mmadecisions.com / bestfightodds / fightmatrix | Web | Old site | Tranco 22–610k | Each only does scoring, odds, or rankings; UFCalendar turned these into its own subpages |
| The Fight Calendar | iOS | 2026-05-19 | 4 ratings | Standalone apps that launched around the same time, with no website traffic |
| SportsDataIO / Sportradar / mmaapi.dev / RapidAPI | API | — | Enterprise | Expensive or incomplete; UFCalendar sells a budget tier from $19 plus MCP |

Verdict: this niche isn't short of schedule builders. Giants and old sites own the top English keywords, but **no one has used one database to make every fight and every fighter indexable pages across 13 languages** .

### Growth tactics (evidence)

1. **Programmatic SEO, exact-match domain, multilingual: this is the main channel (confirmed)** . 2026-11-07 checked rankings with Brave Search:
    - "ufc calendar": #3 and #6 (behind only ESPN and ufc.com)
    - "ufc takvimi" (Turkish): #1
    - "UFC 일정" (Korean): #2 and #10
    - "UFC スケジュール" (Japanese): #4
    - "calendario ufc 2026": #8
    - "ufc fighter salaries": #1
    - "mma calendar": #8 and #9. In CrUX, tr, kr, mx, and jp rose first, which matches these rankings. The llms.txt calls itself an "SEO-first calendar."

2. **Long-tail page factory (confirmed)** . Every fight has its own page and JSON-LD, plus blog posts like "how X beats Y," "odds prediction," and "fan ticket picks" (8 posts per major card in the news sitemap). It also runs /tonight, /this-weekend, /compare/a-vs-b, /salaries/{fighter}, and /glossary/{term}, built for questions like "is there UFC tonight."

3. **GEO / AI engines (done, effect unknown)** . What it did:
    - robots.txt allows all real-time retrieval crawlers, including ChatGPT-User, Claude, and Perplexity
    - Blocks training crawlers (GPTBot, ClaudeBot, CCBot, etc.) from 12 foreign-language directories
    - **Also blocks AhrefsBot, SemrushBot, MJ12bot, and DotBot** , so competitors can't see its backlinks or keywords
    - llms.txt includes a dedicated "citation guide," and every event page has a results summary at the top for AI to cite

4. **Developer and MCP directories (confirmed listings, small traffic)** . Listed on glama.ai, mcpmarket, and mcpservers.org. The UFCalendar GitHub org has 4 repos, each with 0 stars. PyPI package ufcalendar v0.4.1. These mainly give backlinks and paid leads, not traffic.

5. **No social, influencer, or ad activity found** . A search for ufcalendar in X corpus (x-radar, 120 days) returned 0. No founder promo posts on Reddit, HN, or Product Hunt. Its ads are absent from our ad library (cards show empty ads). The founder's Instagram has 272 followers.

### Why it made the charts

- The domain is the keyword: ufcalendar.com equals "UFC calendar." It ranks #3 for "ufc calendar," behind only ESPN and ufc.com.

- Multilingual is the real breakthrough: English head terms are dominated by ESPN and ufc.com, but "UFC schedule" terms in Turkish, Korean, Japanese, and Spanish face much weaker competition, where it ranks #1 to #4. CrUX shows mx, tr, and kr reached the top 500k two months before the US.

- Scale through the long tail: about 47k URLs × 13 languages, covering every fight, every fighter, salaries, and scorecards. "ufc fighter salaries" ranks #1, showing data pages are capturing the long tail.

- Data updates fast (every minute during fights), it puts events from 12 promotions in one calendar, and "tonight / this weekend" queries get answered in one visit, giving users a reason to bookmark and return. The site claims 2.9 pages per visit.

- Timing: UFC moved to Paramount+ in 2026, so users can't find where to watch, and how-to-watch searches have grown (inferred, unverified). There was also an acceleration in late October; the cause is unclear, possibly blog and fight-page traffic, or a Google core update.

### Differentiation

Compared with Tapology and Sherdog, it's not a community or an old database; it's a clean, SEO-first, multilingual cross-promotion calendar. Compared with big players like ESPN, it covers small events and non-English markets. Compared with peer aggregators like next-fight, it adds deeper data pages (scorecards, salaries, Robbery Index, ranking history) and 13 languages.

**Its differentiation is why it took off, but that differentiation is at the distribution layer (how many languages and pages), not the product layer** : users arrive because they stumbled on it through search. Pro subscriptions, API, and MCP are monetization layers added after traffic built up, and I haven't seen them drive traffic.

### Visibility

Few people know about it yet:

- Revenue is not public (no TrustMRR listing, founder hasn't shared numbers)

- No media coverage, no discussion on X

- GitHub stars are 0

- It also blocks Ahrefs and Semrush, so outsiders using SEO tools can't see it either

Only AI directory sites (inite.ai, MCP directories) list it.

### Copycats

No clear copycats found. next-fight.com is a peer that is also growing in the same period, but it isn't copying it.

### What others can borrow

- The formula of "exact-match domain + public structured data sources (ufcstats, Wikipedia) + programmatic pages × multiple languages" can transfer to other sports: boxing, tennis, F1, esports, cricket, darts, snooker. The key is picking sports where the English head terms are taken by giants but non-English long tail is unserved.

- Build traffic in weakly competitive languages first, then attack English.

- Hide the playbook by blocking SEO tool crawlers.

- One database sells three things at once: consumer subscriptions, API/MCP, and language-targeted ad slots.

### Unknowns

- Real traffic (95k is self-reported) and the country breakdown

- Pro / API conversion and revenue

- The specific reason for the late-October acceleration

- Actual rankings on Google (only Brave was checked here)

- Whether programmatic content will be hit by Google's "scaled content abuse" policy

- Trademark risk from the event promoter: UFC is in the domain
