The founder sets it up for you by hand, then asks you for a review: how a small Baku team built a Shopify app with 100 reviews in 7 months

What it is A set of Shopify merchant tools from a small team in Azerbaijan. The flagship app adds fees that Shopify can't add natively to orders, such as duties, card processing fees, deposits and pickup fees.

Why it took off New US and EU tariff rules forced many small shops to add separate fees, which Shopify doesn't support natively. The founder personally sets up each merchant's rules and asks for reviews on the spot, so reviews pile up quickly and new, and the app ranks high in app store search.

BHow you could follow Don't compete head-on on surcharges. Use the same logic to find another need that Shopify can't do natively, has complex rules and is tied to regulation (such as an EU withdrawal button or deposit refund fees). Put "I set it up for you personally" into your pricing tier from day one, and go all-in on app store reviews and keywords.

Grade B: a clear playbook, low cost and little attention, worth a try. But surcharge niches already have established players and three new entrants this year, a single app is likely only a few thousand dollars a month, and founder-led service is hard to scale. Few people know about it yet

Global rank 271k · 90 days ago 938k

volapps.com climbed from ranking 938k to 271k globally over 90 days, yet the site is a single page and few people visit it. What's really growing is the 8 Shopify apps behind it, led by a small tool that adds surcharges to orders: launched in March this year, it had 100 reviews by November, all five stars, and the most new reviews in the niche over the last 30 days. Its approach relies neither on technology nor on paid acquisition: after a merchant installs the app, the founder personally sets up the fee rules and asks for a review on the spot. Below: what it sells, why people want it right now, and whether you can use the same playbook.

A bike shop's $150 review

In Nov 2026 3, Playtri, a bike shop in St. Petersburg, Florida, left a five-star review for "VOL Surcharge Fee & Extra Fees" on the Shopify app store. Their need was specific: when a customer chooses in-store pickup, add a $150 transport fee per bike; if they choose shipping, don't charge it. Shopify's built-in settings can't do this. A small line under the review reads "About 1 hour using the app", meaning they wrote the review an hour after installing.

Reviews like this keep coming on its review page. In Nov 4, a Dutch transport company wrote "Vugar's service was very fast", taking about 4 hours. In Oct 19, a US B2B meat wholesaler wrote that it charges a 2.5% fee only to wholesale customers who pay by credit card, not those who pay by bank transfer, and "sounds simple, but anyone who has done Shopify B2B knows the details get complicated fast". The same day, a UK tactical gear shop wanted tariff rules combining country, product category and order value. In Oct 23, a Canadian beauty wholesaler said others were doing discounts while she wanted the opposite: adding a markup at the store POS for retail customers, "Vugar set up everything for me and walked me through the last steps on our POS". (Shopify app store review page, scraped 11-06)

Vugar is the founder of VOL Apps; the team is based in Baku, Azerbaijan.

What it actually is

volapps.com is a one-page lead-gen site introducing several apps, with every button linking to the developer page on the Shopify app store. The testimonials on the homepage are marked as examples. There is no blog and no SEO content.

The money comes from 8 apps in the Shopify app store, all starting with VOL (developer page, 11-07):

8 of 5 of them earned the "Built for Shopify" badge, which gets a boost in app store search and shows a badge.

So why did its ranking climb? Here's my inference: each app's backend gets its own subdomain (fraud., fees., reviews.……volapps.com). Country-blocking apps have to check every visitor's IP, VPN, and proxy, so once a store installs it, every customer's browser sends a request to a volapps subdomain. The ranking climb therefore reflects how many visitors all the stores running VOL get combined, not people browsing the official site. It doesn't even make the top of Chrome's real-user stats, which fits. The climb started in mid-August, right when reviews for the country-blocking and surcharge apps were picking up (9–October: 18 reviews for the former, 32 for the latter).

Why people now need to "add a fee"

By default, Shopify only lets you change prices and apply discounts. It doesn't let you add a separate fee line to an order. To add conditional fees yourself, you need Plus, starting at $2,300/month, and even then you have to write code. Regular stores that want to add fees have to install an app.

This need has clearly grown over the past 2025–2026 years, and the reviews show it plainly:

  • Tariffs: the US added tariffs and ended the de minimis exemption for small parcels, and the EU has started taxing low-value parcels too. Some stores want to "add a 50% tariff fee for US customers only," others want "separate tariffs for the EU and US."
  • Card fees: charge an extra 2.5% when B2B customers pay by credit card.
  • Deposits and misc fees: German bottle deposits (Pfand), recycling fees, rush fees, handling fees.
  • Store markups: wholesale-priced goods sold to retail customers at the POS need a markup.

These rules have to be combined by country, Shopify Markets, customer tags, payment method, and store location. Merchants are most afraid of breaking their online store with a bad setup. In the words of one US store owner in the reviews, she "didn't want to break a store that's running."

Where the money comes from

The free plan allows only 10 orders a month, and only on the online store. To use it on POS, draft orders, or Markets, you pay $15 a month. B2B and card fees are only available on the Plus tier at $35. Once you actually use it, you basically have to pay.

Revenue isn't public, and Shopify doesn't publish install numbers. A rough estimate from "review count × lowest paid price" puts the 8 apps together at roughly $2,500 or more a month (estimate; use it only for order of magnitude). Its price is about half that of the main competitors ($15 vs. $9–$10), and the extra money buys the founder's hands-on help.

How it passed the established players

This niche isn't empty. The oldest player, Upcharge, has been around for 2016 years with 202 reviews. The closest in features, Magical Surcharge, launched 2022 years ago, has 139 reviews, and still ranks first in its category chart (VOL is second). VOL reached 7 reviews in 100 months, adding 30 in the last 18 days. Magical has 12 and Upcharge has 11 (Shopify review counts, 11-07).

Its playbook has three steps, all out in the open:

  1. The founder sets you up one-on-one, then asks for a review on the spot. Every price tier says "Support from the founder." Across the first 10 pages of reviews, 94 mention Vugar, and 52 were written within a day of installing. Many say things like "28 minutes" or "about 1 hours." He replies to every review at length, in German for German reviews and Italian for Italian ones. The Shopify app store sorts by rating, review count, and recency, so "all five stars, lots of reviews" directly turns into search ranking.
  2. Keyword stuffing. The main app has been renamed several times. Its subtitle and description now include tariffs, customs duties, bottle deposit, Pfand, credit card fees, B2B fees, and rush fees, and each of the 14 screenshots comes with a keyword-rich caption. Whatever a merchant searches for, there's a chance it shows up.
  3. Building a suite and collecting badges. 8 apps share one prefix and developer page, so installing one shows you the others. 5 of them earned Built for Shopify. When the EU required online stores to add a "withdrawal button" in July, it shipped a matching app quickly.

What I didn't find matters too: no ads in the ad libraries, no mentions on X in 90 days, no media coverage, and an August "best Shopify surcharge apps" comparison post didn't list it. Almost nobody has noticed it.

Three newcomers have appeared in this niche over 2026 years, a sign it's heating up. There's no evidence they copied VOL.

If it were you

Verdict: B. The playbook is clear, the cost is low, and almost nobody is paying attention, so it's worth a try. But going straight for the surcharge niche is already crowded, and a single app probably only pulls in a few thousand dollars a month. A founder who personally handles support is also hard to scale.

Who it's for: 1–2 people, one of whom can write Shopify apps (Functions, Cart Transform, POS extensions), and another who is willing to chat with merchants online every day to help them set things up, ideally able to reply in European languages like German, French, or Dutch. Most of VOL's reviews come from small European stores.

Who it's not for: Anyone who wants a set-it-and-forget-it app that earns from organic traffic. The core of this playbook is having a person online. If you don't want to chat one-on-one with merchants, this path won't work. It's also not for people hoping to get rich: the ceiling for a Shopify app is a few thousand to tens of thousands of dollars a month, not higher.

How to do it: Don't go head-to-head for surcharges. Using the same logic, find another need that is "impossible in native Shopify, rule-heavy, and tied to regulation": the EU withdrawal button (VOL's app for this still has 0 reviews), explanations of country-by-country tariffs and customs clearance fees, deposits and recycling fees in Germany or the Nordics, markups for B2B payment methods, and EU accessibility compliance. On day one, write "the founder sets it up with you" into every price tier. Make the free tier generous enough to try, but put the features you actually need, like POS, Markets, and B2B, in the paid tiers.

How to get customers: Put everything into the Shopify app store. Fill the name, subtitle, and screenshot captions with long-tail keywords merchants will search for. Every merchant who installs gets a proactive message, and you help them configure and test. Then ask them on the spot for a specific review (say what kind of store they run and what rules they set up). Build the first 30 reviews, and apply for Built for Shopify at the same time.

When to move: Regulation-driven needs follow effective dates. Tariffs and new EU rules are still changing, so the sooner you claim a keyword, the better. Newcomers have already started moving into surcharges, while other compliance niches probably still have a window of half a year to a year (inference).

Signs you've misread this: ① VOL's surcharge app's monthly new reviews drop to single digits or negative reviews start appearing, which means the founder-led support can't keep up; ② Shopify natively opens conditional fees, and this niche disappears; ③ You've been live for 3 months, have served dozens of stores one-on-one, and still can't reach 20 reviews, which means the need itself is too small.

Research report on volapps.com (VOL Apps)

Research date 2026-11-07. Data card: Tranco 90 days 937,824 → 270,960 (×3.5), not in CrUX global top 1M; pool C1, matched to the developer in the shopifyapps library volapps (Azerbaijan, 8 apps, 180 reviews in total).

One line

volapps.com is the Shopify app studio of a small team in Baku, Azerbaijan (founder Vugar). The website itself is just a landing page. The money is in the 8 apps on the Shopify App Store, led by VOL Surcharge Fee & Extra Fees (extra fees, tariffs, deposits and card fees on products and orders). The domain ranking climb is mostly not people visiting the website. Each app's backend runs on its own subdomain. The country-blocking/fraud app makes every visitor of a store that has it request fraud.volapps.com. Tranco counts that traffic, so CrUX doesn't show it. What actually took off is the flagship app: it launched 2026-03-23, reached 100 reviews, all 5 stars, within 7 months, and its review count over the last 30 days is the fastest in the surcharge niche. That came from the founder setting things up one-on-one for merchants and asking them for a good review right after setup, plus the real need created by tariffs over the past 2025–2026 years and new EU rules.

1. What it is and where its traffic lands

  • volapps.com is a single page describing the 6 apps, and every button links to apps.shopify.com/partners/volapps. The "merchant reviews" on the homepage are labeled "Sample merchant review", so they are placeholders, not real reviews. There is no blog and no SEO content. (Source: r.jina.ai scrape of volapps.com, 2026-11-07)

  • Subdomains map to each app's backend: fraud., fees., reviews., upsell., timer., shipping., and subscriptions.volapps.com all resolve to Cloudflare (104.21.60.130 / 172.67.196.215). Random subdomains don't resolve, so it isn't wildcard DNS. fraud.volapps.com returns the app page embedded in the Shopify admin (with a shopify-api-key meta tag). (dig + curl, 2026-11-07)
  • My read on the ranking (inference, not directly verified): the country-blocking app has to determine the visitor's country from IP, handle VPNs and proxies, and has a "visitor analytics" feature, so every visitor's browser at each store requests volapps subdomains. The review widget, countdown bar and add-to-cart upsell also pull data from the storefront. Tranco is synthesized from DNS and traffic sources like Cloudflare Radar and Umbrella, and those requests are counted toward volapps.com. CrUX only counts origins users open directly, so it doesn't see them. The timing also lines up:
    • Tranco started climbing in mid-August: 08-06 then 937,824,08-27 then 562,062,10-01 then 421,304,11-05 then 270,960 (traffic library domain volapps.com).
    • Of the Country Blocker's 31 reviews, 18 fall between 9 and October (September 8, October 10).
    • The surcharge app also has 16 reviews each from 9 to October.
    • Conclusion: the ranking reflects the total visitor traffic of stores that have VOL installed, not the popularity of the website.

2. Competitors

The flagship app's niche is "adding fees to Shopify orders and products", which Shopify can't do natively (only Plus stores can write Scripts / Functions). Full-text search of the shopifyapps library for fee/surcharge/tariff (2026-11-07):

Shopify Plus Scripts / FunctionsBig-company features——Plus $2300+/monthOnly Plus stores can build this themselves. Regular stores can't, which is why this niche exists

Bottom line: this isn't an untapped blue ocean. The established Upcharge and Magical each have a couple hundred reviews, but VOL reached 100 reviews in 7 months, with 18 reviews in the last 30 days, the fastest in the niche (shopifyapps library reviews_30d: VOL 18, Magical 12, Upcharge 11).

3. Growth tactics (evidence)

  1. One-on-one setup from the founder, asking for a good review right after (confirmed, the core tactic)
    • Of the flagship app's 101 reviews, 94 mention "Vugar".
    • 52 reviews were written within a day of installing the app (phrases like "28 minutes / About 1 hour / About 2 hours using the app"), and 47 within a few hours.
    • Review quotes: "Installed and was instantly greeted by the founder who built out the fee we needed to implement in under 15 minutes"; "Vugar set everything up for me - walked me through the final couple of steps at our Shopify POS"; "he immediately explained how … tested everything for me".
    • The founder writes a long reply to every review.
    • Every pricing tier says "Support from the founder", treating it as a selling point.
    • The result is 100% five-star. The Shopify App Store ranks by rating, review count and review recency, and this playbook translated directly into search ranking. (apps.shopify.com/product-fees-surcharge/reviews pages 1–10, 2026-11-07 scrape stats)
  2. App Store keyword optimization (confirmed)
    • The flagship app has been renamed several times: first "VOL ‑ Surcharge & Product Fees", then "VOL Surcharge Fee Product Fees - Add Extra Fees, POS Fees & …", and now "VOL Surcharge Fee & Extra Fees". The old names show up in the titles of search results at apps.shopify.com/reviews/2255967 and 2279865.
    • The subtitle and description pack in long-tail terms like tariffs, customs duties, bottle deposit (Pfand), credit card fees, B2B fees, rush fees and recycling fee.
    • Each of the 14 screenshots has a keyword-rich caption.
    • Ranks #2 in "Pricing - Other" and #10 in "Checkout - Other" (shopifyapps library app_category.list_rank).
  3. Built for Shopify certification (confirmed): 5 of the 8 apps carry the BFS badge, which gets a weighted boost and a badge in search.
  4. Cross-promotion across the portfolio (partly confirmed): 8 apps share the VOL prefix and the same developer page, so a merchant who installs one sees the others. Shipping Protection, Upsell and other apps use the same "founder support + reviews" playbook, but on a much smaller scale.
  5. Timing or platform events (inference, supported by review content)
    • The US raised tariffs and ended the de minimis small-parcel exemption in 2025; the EU started charging tariffs on low-value parcels in 2026. Many stores need to pass tariffs and customs clearance fees on to buyers as a separate line item.
    • Reviews repeatedly mention things like "50% tariff fee specifically to our USA customers", "customs duty setup … country-specific rules", and "fees/tariffs for both EU and US".
    • B2B card fees (2.5%) and German bottle deposits were also must-haves over the same period.
    • The EU requires online stores to offer a "withdrawal button" from June 2026 (Directive 2023/2673). VOL followed up with an EU Withdrawal Button on 2026-07-15, currently with 0 reviews.
    • The regulation dates are public knowledge; I didn't verify each one individually.
  6. Channels I didn't find
    • No paid ads found: the traffic library card shows no ads, and metaads and googleads don't match.
    • Searching X for "volapps" and "shopify surcharge app": 0 posts in 90 days.
    • No TikTok, YouTube or Reddit content found.
    • No media coverage found.
    • MerchantLayer's "Best Shopify surcharge apps" comparison article 2026-08-25 doesn't list VOL.

4. Why it took off

  • Why users come: merchants need fees that Shopify can't add natively, such as tariffs, deposits, card fees, B2B handling fees and POS retail markups. This need has grown over the past 2025–2026 years because of tariffs and new EU rules. Merchants searching the app store for surcharge / tariff / extra fee see VOL at the top, with a 5.0 rating, recent reviews and the BFS badge.
  • Why they stay and pay:
    • These rules are complex (combinations of country, Markets, customer tags, payment method and store location), and merchants are afraid of breaking their online store. The founder sets them up and tests them on the spot, and they're ready to use once it's done.
    • The free plan only covers 10 orders a month and works only on the online store. POS, draft orders and Markets cost $15/month, and B2B and card fees require a Plus store at $35/month, so real use means paying.
  • Why it outpaces the established players: Upcharge and Magical offer standard customer support, while VOL sells "the founder helps you set it up" as the product. Its feature coverage is also broader (POS, draft orders, Markets and B2B are all covered).

5. Differentiation

  • The main differentiator is service, not technology: "Support from the founder" is written into every pricing tier, so someone helps you set up and test your fee rules right after installing. That's where its review pace and 100% five-star rating come from, and it's why its ranking has risen.
  • Secondary differentiator: one app covers online store, POS, draft orders, Shopify Markets, and B2B customer tags, plus a library of ready-made fee templates (deposits, returns, handling, rush, etc.). Magical also covers POS and draft orders, so this isn't unique.
  • Weak spot: founder-led support doesn't scale. VOL also costs about 50% more than competitors ($15 vs $9–10), and it's currently held up by the service.

6. Visibility and copycats

  • Visibility: still hardly known.
    • Revenue isn't public, there's no TrustMRR entry, and I found no founder posting revenue.
    • 0 mentions on X, no media coverage.
    • Third-party comparison posts (MerchantLayer, 2026-08-25) don't list it, only an auto-generated comparison page from rankbase.io.
  • Copycats and new entrants:
    • In the same niche, 2026 years ago Practical Fees & Surcharges launched (05-01, $15,9 reviews), and Bony Extra Fees & Surcharges launched (07-06,16 reviews, already earned BFS).
    • FeeLayer is in early access.
    • There's no evidence they copied VOL, but the niche is clearly heating up.

7. What others can learn

  1. On platforms like Shopify, where store search and reviews drive ranking, find a must-have need the platform doesn't handle natively and that is fiddly to configure (fees, compliance, duties). Then use "the founder sets it up for you in 15 minutes and asks for a review on the spot" to outpace review velocity. You can catch up to incumbents who've been at it for years within months.
  2. Pick topics from regulation and platform news: tariffs, the EU withdrawal button, deposits. Launch fast and fill the description and screenshots with long-tail keywords.
  3. Build a matrix of 8 small tools under one brand prefix, each going for BFS. Earning 5 BFS isn't expensive, and search weighting makes it worthwhile.

8. Uncertain

  • The domain rankings mostly come from storefront requests to subdomains like fraud. This is an inference from subdomain structure, product features, and timing. I didn't capture the storefront script to verify it directly.
  • Installs, paying merchants, and revenue are unknown (Shopify doesn't publish them). The shopifyapps library's rough est_mrr_floor is $2,540/month, only useful as an order-of-magnitude reference.
  • The reviews fall under "review requests" (asked for right after the service is done). I saw no evidence of fake reviews.
  • The main app page says "Based in United States," but the developer address is Baku. They may have registered a US company; unverified.
  • I didn't verify the effective dates for tariffs and EU regulations individually.
