# From "chat with characters" to "play a world": how WorldOS got 300k players in three months through Latin American fandoms

**What it is** An AI world simulation game played in the browser: pick a world (Hogwarts, WWII, romance fanfic...), type what you want to do, the AI drives the plot, and you spend points per turn.

**Why it took off** It turned "chatting with AI characters" into "playing in an AI world". Girls in fandom circles on Character.AI spread it organically on TikTok first, then paid micro-influencers and user-generated multilingual search pages amplified it.

**B** **How you could follow it** Don't build a generic version. Pick a theme it hasn't covered well (say Chinese history strategy or isekai management), go deep in the local language, and copy its playbook: referral codes that give points, micro-influencers paid per view, and competitor comparison pages.

Grade B: the playbook is clear and easy to learn from, and the "AI world" slot isn't crowded yet. But it has 16z's money and 60k user-made worlds behind it, compute costs are high, IP and minor-compliance carry risk, traffic has flattened over the last month, and followers like ooc.ai and LifeSim have already appeared. Chatter in small circles

WorldOS is an AI world sandbox played in the browser. This July it took off on its own in fandom TikTok in Argentina, Mexico and the Philippines, then in September paid influencers pushed it into English-speaking strategy game players. The founder says it has 300k players in three months, with paid conversion above 10% in key regions. The category is already crowded, but nearly every step of its distribution playbook can be copied.

### A video from a small account with 829 followers

On July 2, 2026, a TikTok account with just 829 followers in Argentina, @nkhrenni, posted a very short video with a Spanish caption: "It's all very short and fast, this afternoon I'll send you tutorials on how to use the app inside (at least the one I tried)", tagged #worldos #bsd #bots #cai. #bsd is the anime Bungo Stray Dogs, #cai is Character.AI. The video later got 536k views.

A month later, a Philippine account with 214 followers, @misos00p4, posted one with just the line "i mean glad everyone's having fun", tagged #ao3fanfic #wattpadtiktok #fanfics, with 915k views and 240k likes. In August 24 an Argentine video reached 1.18M. Keyword search finds 147 videos about WorldOS, adding up to about 13M views (TikHub, 11-07).

The people posting these are girls who read fanfic on AO3 and Wattpad and chat with anime characters on Character.AI. In Mexico's real Chrome user data, worldos.cc ranked among the top 5k sites locally in both July and August.

### What it is

You pick a world, such as Hogwarts, Jujutsu Kaisen, WWII, "2026 modern nation strategy", an American high school, or a contract marriage romance, then type what you want to do and the AI continues the story. A world is assembled from several "apps": chat, social feeds, maps, stocks, AI-generated web pages. Worlds, characters and apps can all be made, published and remixed by users. There is an Android app, but no iOS version.

The difference from Character.AI and Janitor AI is that those are chats with one character, whereas this is playing a world with maps, factions, stats and time progression. Users in videos repeatedly say two things: "more fun than paxhistoria" (Pax Historia is a site that only does AI historical grand strategy), and calls to "c.ai and JanitorAI people" to come over.

### How far traffic grew

Global site rank (Tranco): July 30 at around 916k, August 20 to 175k, September 10 spiked to 85k, the peak, then fell back, November 5 at 137k. The last 30 days have been roughly flat.

By country the order is clear: first Mexico, Spain and the Philippines, then in September the UK, Canada, Australia, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam entered those countries' top 100k. The US has stayed in the 500k range.

The Android version launched in September 19, reaching 7 84k installs by November, a rating of 3.2 (496 ratings), and over five hundred new installs a day (Google Play). The main base is still on the web.

Co-founder Sophia (Wanrong) He wrote on LinkedIn in October: 3 months, 300k+ players, users have built 60k+ games, "paying conversion of 10%+ in key regions," and said male users' LTV is clearly higher after moving from chat to games. These are the company's own claims; no revenue figures were given.

### Where the money comes from

Charges "Zap" credits per turn. New accounts get some for signing up, plus a small top-up every 24 hours; credit packs $4.99 to $99.99, with optional auto-renewal; memberships $6.99 / $14.99 / $29.99 a month; a separate tier for bringing your own LLM API key (see the pricing page on the site, 11-07).

This pricing looks more like in-game purchases than a companion-chat subscription: the more deeply you play, the faster credits drain. Strategy players push dozens or hundreds of turns per session, so the higher male-user LTV makes sense.

### Who is behind it

Komiko itself grew on SEO as an AI content site, and Komiko's rankings have been falling since September this year. My inference: the team's focus is shifting toward WorldOS.

### How users came in

**1. Fan communities spread it, with invite codes.** A new user enters an invite code and both sides get 150 Zap. That's why TikTok videos are full of "use my code": @jeonfloxx's 10-13 video with 200k views says "hurry up and download, I need zaps"; TikTok also has a "Códigos para zaps en WorldOS" topic page, and there are code-swap threads on Reddit.

**2. Paid everyday-creator program.** The site has a "WorldOS UGC Program" that says follower count doesn't matter, pays for agreed content, with view bonuses up to $1,000, plus Zap. The English-speaking male-player audience is reached through this channel: @ethanjournal1 (172k followers, US) posted three "declaring war on Israel / Europe in WorldOS" videos in September, with 1.25M, 830k and 650k views, all tagged as branded content, timed right at September's ranking peak. You can still find a batch of accounts posting the same "POV: she saved your life, you wake up calling another girl's name... Continue on WorldOS" format, which I infer are creators in this program.

**3. User-built worlds automatically become search landing pages.** The sitemap has about 476 shards, and world and character pages together likely add up to over a million URLs, each in five languages: English, Spanish, Simplified Chinese, Japanese and Korean. IP worlds like Hogwarts, Jujutsu Kaisen and My Hero Academia catch fan-community searches.

**4. Competitor comparison pages and guides.** There are "WorldOS vs Pax Historia" (one each in English and Spanish), vs Status AI, vs Emochi, vs OOC, vs Isekai Zero, plus blog posts like "how to make a Character AI bot," "what is AO3," "OC templates" and "solo D&D," built to capture searches from competitors' users.

What didn't work: Jun 22's Show HN got only 6 points and 2 comments; almost nobody discussed it on X.

### Who it's competing with

| Product | Scale (global ranking, 11-05) | How WorldOS differs |
|---|---|---|
| Character.AI | #950 | Single-character chat, with moderation getting stricter |
| Janitor AI | #1,214 | Character-card chat, loose on content, no game systems |
| Talkie / SpicyChat / Perchance | 4k to 7k users | Large companion-chat site |
| AI Dungeon | 35k users, slowly declining | Veteran text adventure, 2019 years old |
| Pax Historia | 45k users, steady | Only AI historical grand strategy; old players on Reddit complain that the currency "doesn't stretch as far anymore" |
| ooc.ai | August 223k users → November 47k users | Similar AI roleplay, growing even faster than WorldOS |
| LifeSim | Not in the top 1M | Free 3D life simulator; 11-04 wrote a dedicated "LifeSim vs WorldOS" page |

AI roleplay is a red ocean. The "AI worlds / game sandbox" slot was mainly held by Pax Historia (strategy only) and AI Dungeon (aging). WorldOS merges both: traffic comes from the romance and fan-fiction side, payments from the strategy and life-simulation side.

Others are already eyeing it: LifeSim is bidding on its keywords; there's an iOS app "Worldo: Living AI Worlds" with a very similar name and tagline, not yet significant; the open-source Open Historia is competing for Pax's slot.

### Risks

- The first TikTok wave is fading: rankings have slipped from the September high and have been flat over the last month.

- The terms require users to be 18+, but TikTok users are clearly younger; many worlds directly use anime and Harry Potter IP. Both carry compliance risk.

- Every turn calls an LLM, so compute costs are high. Reddit users report "service not available in your region," and VPNs don't help, suggesting some countries are blocked; I haven't verified the cause.

- "10% paying conversion" only says "key regions" and gives no revenue figures.

### If it were you

**My take:** A "play anything" WorldOS clone won't keep up; it has money, five languages and 60k user-made worlds. What's worth building is a narrow theme, or taking its distribution playbook into another category.

**Who it fits:** small teams that can build SEO landing pages, understand TikTok creator seeding, and control their own LLM costs; people already inside a fan or gaming community fit best.

**Who it doesn't fit:** anyone who just wants a generic AI chat site, or who can't handle content moderation, minors, and copyright complaints.

**How to do it:** pick a world type that neither WorldOS nor Pax Historia has covered well, such as Three Kingdoms / Chinese historical strategy, Japanese isekai management, or K-pop idol training, which have defined fan circles; build the whole site in the local language; charge per turn with credits, and make the strategy play, where one session means many turns, the core paid product.

**How to acquire users:** copy its four moves. Invite codes give both sides credits; a creator program that pays for views regardless of follower count; every user-built world automatically generates a multilingual landing page; and comparison and guide pages aimed at competitors. Win one small-language community first, then expand into English.

**Why now:** only a few players are fighting for this slot; ooc.ai and LifeSim both appeared this year. My inference: there's a window until roughly the first half of next year, after which vertical niches will be taken.

**What would show you misread it:** if WorldOS's rankings keep falling for the next two or three months and ooc.ai stops growing, "AI worlds" was just a migration of c.ai users, not a new category that retains people; or if your creator videos bring in people who leave after a few turns, with paying conversion far below 10%, meaning the conversion depends on IP worlds and community, which you can't get.

## Why WorldOS (worldos.cc) is taking off

### What it is

WorldOS is an "AI world simulation sandbox" played in the browser, with an Android app and no iOS version: users pick a world (Hogwarts, Jujutsu Kaisen, WWI/WWII, Modern Day 2026-nation strategy, a US high school, arranged-marriage romance, etc.), type what they want to do, and the AI drives the story forward. A world is assembled from composable "apps" (chat, social feeds, maps, stocks, generated web pages, etc.). Worlds, characters and apps can all be made, published and remixed by users. Turns cost "Zap" credits: free Zap on signup and every 24 hours, credit packs $4.99–$99.99 with optional auto-renewal, memberships $6.99/$14.99/$29.99 a month, and a separate lane for your own API key (site /pricing, 2026-11-07 reads).

- Company: the terms and privacy policy name Entropia Inc. (governed by California law; the terms require users to be 18+) (worldos.cc/tos, /privacy). The Google Play developer name is "Story Engine" and the developer email is a qq.com address (googleplay library, cc.worldos.app).

- Singapore also has WORLDOS PTE. LTD. (2026-06-03 registered, sgpbusiness), which shipped a character-chat app on iOS called "Pogee: AI Chat, AI Story" (2026-07-27 listed, 10 ratings). Same name; whether it's the same team is unverified.

### Data: up from 7 to September; the last 30 days are flat

- Tranco (traffic db): 07-30 #916,082 → 08-06 #642,318 → 08-20 #174,962 → 09-10 #85,474 (peak) → 10-08 #147,573 → 11-05 #136,870. The card's "90 days ×4.7" is computed off the low early-August base; the last 30 days are basically flat (×1.05), having slipped back from the mid-September high.

- CrUX global: 2026-06 top 500k → 07 top 50k → 08 and 09 top 100k. July was the first peak.

- Mexico: CrUX 07 and August were both in the top 5 thousand, September top 10k. Spain has been in the top 50k since July. The Philippines top 50k. UK, Canada, Australia, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam only entered the top 100k in September, suggesting it blew up first in the Latin American Spanish-speaking market and then spread to English-speaking and Asian markets. The US has stayed in the top 500k tier throughout.

- The founder disclosed (on LinkedIn, around 2026-10-17): 3 months, 300k+ players, 60k+ user-created games, "paid conversion of 10%+ in key regions," and noticeably higher LTV for male users. The post has 160 likes and 28 comments.

- Android: 2026-09-19 listed, 11-07 is 83,743 installs, rating 3.22 (496 ratings), 11-06 gained 538 installs in a day. It only reached #148 on the Japan Entertainment Top Grossing chart (googleplay db). Traffic still comes mainly from the web; the app was a follow-on.

- Community: Discord with 4,377 members (231 online, per the Discord invite API 2026-11-07); there's an r/WorldOS subreddit; the official TikTok account @worldos_cc has only 2,066 followers and 277 videos (TikHub).

### Competitors

| Product | Form | Launched | Scale (traffic db 11-05) | How WorldOS differs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Character.AI | Web + app | 2022 | Tranco 950, CrUX top 1k | Single-character chat, not "world + rules + map"; tightening restrictions on minors and content |
| Janitor AI | Web | 2023 | Tranco 1,214 | Character-card chat, loose on content, no game systems |
| Talkie / SpicyChat / Perchance | Web + app | 2023– | Tranco 4,252 / 6,988 / 5,480 | Character companionship, high traffic; WorldOS's blog is going after search terms like "how to make a c.ai / Janitor bot" |
| Pax Historia | Web | 2025 | Tranco 44,788, CrUX top 50k, very stable | Only AI grand strategy / alternate history; old players on Reddit complain that "coins don't go far and quality keeps dropping"; WorldOS turned that gameplay into a world type and wrote a dedicated comparison page |
| AI Dungeon(Latitude) | Web + app | 2019 | Tranco 35,483, CrUX fell to top 100k in September | Veteran text adventure, slowly declining |
| Status AI(WishRoll) | iOS | 2025 first | About 207k App Store ratings (cited by WorldOS's comparison page) | "AI social media" simulation; WorldOS built the same kind of world using a social-feed app |
| Emochi(FlowGPT) | App | 2025 | Not verified | Anime character chat |
| ooc.ai | Web | 2026 | Tranco 223,065 → 46,666 (8-06→11-05), growing even faster than WorldOS | Similar AI roleplay; WorldOS built a dedicated /ooc comparison page |
| Isekai Zero | Web | 2025 | Tranco 100,368 | Isekai roleplay |
| Open Historia | Open source | 2026 | Not in the top 1M | A free, open-source, locally run alternative to Pax Historia |
| LifeSim | Web + iOS | 2026 | Not in the top 1M | A free life simulation on the real Earth across 3 days; 11-04 wrote a "LifeSim vs WorldOS" page to take its keywords |

Takeaway: "AI roleplay" is a red ocean; the "AI world / game sandbox" slot was mainly held by Pax Historia (strategy only) and AI Dungeon (old). WorldOS merges the two: traffic from the romance/fan-fiction side, plus paying users from the strategy/life-sim side.

### Growth tactics (with evidence)

1. **Organic TikTok UGC, starting in Latin American Spanish-speaking and Filipino fan-fiction / c.ai teen circles.** A keyword search turned up 147 videos with roughly 13M views in total (TikHub, 2026-11-07). The earliest hits came from alt accounts: @nkhrenni (Argentina, 829 followers) with a 07-02 video at 536k views; @user013404702 (Mexico) at 07-10 160k; @misos00p4 (Philippines, 214 followers) at 08-04 915k views and 240k likes; @zozoxviurss (Argentina) at 08-24 1.18M. Tags are #ao3fanfic #wattpadtiktok #cai #fictionalcharacters, so users came from c.ai, AO3, and Wattpad. This matches CrUX Mexico's July jump into the top 5 thousand.

2. **Referral codes for acquisition.** New users each get 150 Zap with a referral code; TikTok videos include `worldos.cc/?ref=…` links (e.g., @ybebewiski's 10-10 video at 127k views), there are Reddit threads trading referral codes, and a TikTok topic page "Códigos para zaps en WorldOS."

3. **Paid creators (confirmed).** The official site has a "WorldOS UGC Program" (/creators/apply): no follower minimum, paid per agreed content, with play-based rewards up to $1,000, plus Zap. @ethanjournal1 (172k followers, US) posted three "declaring war on Israel/Europe in WorldOS" videos in September with 1.25M, 830k, and 650k views; TikHub returns branded_content_type=1, meaning it was labeled as a branded partnership. @ancientlyx (539k followers, Germany) posted "Try rewriting history yourself in WorldOS" at 09-23 with 147k views; the tone reads like an ad, but it isn't labeled. This layer targets English-speaking male strategy players, which matches the founder's claim about higher male LTV.

4. **Programmatic SEO + competitor comparison pages.** The sitemap has about 476 shards: world pages around 19 shards × 8.5k entries each, character pages around 454 shards × 2.7k entries each, every page in five languages (en/es/zh-cn/ja/ko). That's an estimated millions of indexable URLs, all auto-generated from UGC. There are also systematic comparison and guide pages: Pax Historia (EN/ES), Status AI, Emochi, OOC, Isekai Zero, plus "how to make a Character AI bot," "what is AO3," "OC templates," "solo D&D," etc., clearly capturing search traffic from c.ai/Janitor/Pax users.

5. **Small YouTube channels.** Videos like "I Let AI Simulate a Global Crisis in 2026 | WorldOS" and "I Made Grok, Codex & DeepSeek Compete to Rule the World | WorldOS," plus a matching review site (danmanreal.com 10-27).

6. **What didn't work:** Show HN (2026-06-22,6 points, 2 comments); 90 X posts in the local corpus over 0 days (x-radar). Neither the Meta nor the TikTok ad library turned up anything (these libraries only track products on their watchlists, so a miss doesn't mean no ads were run).

### Why it's working

1. **Upgrading from "chat with a character" to "play in a world."** It has maps, stats, factions, and time progression, and you can assemble your own world. c.ai refugees want "more like a game, not censored"; strategy players want "Pax Historia but freer." The founder's words: "after moving from chat to game, male-user LTV is noticeably higher," with paid conversion of 10%+.

2. **UGC is both supply and SEO.** 60k+ user-made worlds, each becoming a landing page in 5 languages; IP worlds like Hogwarts, Jujutsu Kaisen, Tokyo Revengers, and My Hero Academia directly catch fan-community search and sharing.

3. **Ignited first in the fan-fiction girl circles of Latin America and the Philippines.** These TikTok circles are small but dense, and few competing products localize into Spanish. WorldOS has a full /es site, and Mexico entered CrUX's top 5 thousand in July.

4. **Then paid UGC creators extended reach to English-speaking strategy players.** September's branded videos from @ethanjournal1 and others each passed a million views, timing that caught the peak in Tranco from 8 to September, and it also hit Android around the same time 9-19.

5. **The team has experience and money.** The Story Engine team already ran the "AI content site + SEO + Discord" playbook with Komiko, backed by a16z's pre-seed (a16z).

### Differentiation

- Versus c.ai, Janitor, and Talkie: it's a "world," with rules, maps, and long-running time progression, not a single character. It charges per turn in Zap, with auto-renewal, so it works more like in-game purchases than a companionship subscription.

- Versus Pax Historia: no genre limits (strategy, romance, fan fiction, and life sims all work), anyone can build a world or assemble an app, and it's available in five languages.

- That differentiation is at least part of why it took off. Users' videos repeatedly say "more fun than paxhistoria" (@cookingwzack23 at 10-2.25M views) and "c.ai and JanitorAI people come here." But the traffic was actually driven by the distribution stack: UGC worlds + TikTok fan circles + paid creators. The product design keeps users around and willing to pay; distribution determines how fast it grows.

### How many people have seen it

- Revenue isn't public. The founder disclosed player counts and conversion rates on LinkedIn; there's no TrustMRR record, no major media coverage, and almost no discussion on X.

- Others are already watching it: LifeSim 11-04 wrote a dedicated comparison page; ooc.ai grew faster over the same period; there's an iOS app "Worldo: Living AI Worlds" (2026-07-17, Singular Horizon, 2 ratings) with a very similar name and tagline; Open Historia is going after the Pax slot. Overall it's "spreading in small circles, and others are already following."

### Risks and open questions

- Over the last 30 days the ranking has held steady but is down from the September peak (9-10 #85,474 → 11-05 #136,870), suggesting the first wave of TikTok momentum is fading.

- Reddit users report "service not available in your region" and can't get in even with a VPN. It may be an active block on certain countries (compliance or compute cost); the reason is unverified.

- The terms require 18+, but a lot of TikTok content comes from young users (#genalpha type tags), which is a compliance risk. Many worlds use anime/Harry Potter IP directly, a copyright risk. Calling the LLM per turn is expensive in compute.

- The relationship between the Play developer "Story Engine," Entropia Inc. named in the terms, and Singapore's WORLDOS PTE. LTD. is unverified.

- The "10%+ paid conversion" figure is the founder's own claim, limited to "key regions," with no revenue numbers.

### What to borrow

- Repackaging "character chat" as "playable worlds / games" to capture the LTV of male strategy players.

- Using UGC to auto-generate multilingual landing pages (one each for worlds, characters, collections, and the app).

- Writing competitor comparison and guide pages to capture competitors' search terms.

- Referral codes that grant points, so users carry the links on TikTok themselves.

- A UGC creator program that pays by views rather than follower count: spend small amounts on lots of ordinary accounts, then pick a few mid-tier creators for branded deals.

- Hit a small-language circle first (Latin American Spanish fan fiction), then expand to English-speaking markets.
