The other side: Mac clipboard, screen recording, menu bar and notch tools. Only the launch month made money.

Don't build general clipboard managers, auto-zoom screen recorders, menu bar managers, or notch tools. It can be built, but only the launch month pays: someone with 25k followers earned $6,000 in month one, and a few hundred dollars three months later. There are only two exceptions: make it a feature inside a paid workflow, or have distribution and be willing to acquire an existing app to sustain it.Not promising · grade and headline derived from the full text · next review 12-01
| Background | AI lets one person ship a good-looking Mac utility in a few weeks, but all four categories already have free open-source leaders. |
|---|---|
| Upside | Closed: the general version sold $15–99 as a one-time purchase, and the free version reached 1–40k stars. Only vertical workflows and store distribution are left. |
| Demand | The need is real (people don't want to subscribe to Screen Studio and want to manage the clipboard and menu bar), but the biggest winners are the free tier. |
| Competition | openscreen 40k stars, Ice 30k, Maccy 22k, Thaw 12.5k, all free; macOS 26 ships with clipboard history and menu bar toggles; PH launches per month 31 → 281 |
| Revenue | 12 TrustMRR businesses all sold below their best month in October, with a median drop of 70%. 5 are listed for sale. |
| Growth | An X launch post plus Product Hunt only moves things for a month. The one flat performer, Screen Charm, relies on SEO, 50% affiliate payouts, and Reddit. Solt's Google ads were paused after 12 days. |
| Window | Not a window problem. If revenue is under $1,500 for 30 days by the third month after launch, list it for sale and cut losses. |
| Who it's for | Those with paying workflow users who plug clipboard / screen recording in as a feature, or those with distribution who can be acquired to feed a studio. |
