Free skill repos for Claude Code / Codex: pick the right topic and it can pull thousands of stars. One line in the README funnels people to your paid service.
- Status
- Narrowing (hit rate on broad topics is falling; vertical topics and funnel use are still open)
- Why now, and how long the window lasts
- Skills are a common format across Claude Code, Codex, and Cursor, and collecting skills is still in its window. But October supply multiplied, and broad topics (visual, general writing) dropped from 20k-star to few-thousand-star range per repo. The funnel use isn't affected by hit rate: it doesn't need to go viral, just needs the topic to match the users of a paid service.
- Confidence
- Medium. The hit-rate decline has two readings, and the direction matches; the funnel has only one sample, Publora, with no hard revenue figure. What would overturn this: a new broad-topic skill repo in November reaching 10k stars (meaning the window hasn't closed), or Publora's "50–80 onboardings per day" being shown not to convert to paid.

Already doing it
Visual output includes anatomy, video-shotcraft, lemo-opuscar, alchaincyf/huashu-art-motion (5,925), ffmpeg-skill; account operations include the Jakeschincariol series; Chinese short drama includes shuohao-skills and drama-skills; the funnel includes Publora (sergebulaev's 8 skill repos); celebrity directories include mattpocock, t3dotgg, unclebob.
The hardest step
Topic choice. The same person, same format: "run Instagram" 4,325 stars, "run X" 62 stars. Topics that make money or grow followers far outperform ones that save money or help with job hunting. Account-operation skills also run into platform terms of service.
Who it's for
Individuals or small teams that already have a paid API or SaaS (especially a service agents call) use a free skill repo to drive traffic. How this differs from [009]: [009] makes the skill itself a paid library and collects subscriptions; this one is free and sends traffic to a separate paid product via stars and README. Both depend on distribution.
Should every product builder know this?
Yes. For people building developer tools, a skill repo is one of the cheapest acquisition channels. Publora gets 50–80 onboardings per day from a markdown file.
