Not promising: the most spammed categories on Shopify. Bundle / add-on / quantity discounts, AI store builders / dropshipping, AI product photos and virtual try-on, WhatsApp broadcasts (plus a free review-farming model: study it to understand it, don't copy it).
- Status
- Closed (1,500–2,700 new apps flooding in each month, 93% of October launches with zero reviews)
- Why this is written up
- Shopify's "new apps" and "review growth" charts are full of these categories, which looks like demand exploding. In fact it's 2,000 people per month doing the same thing. When reading Shopify data, stack three layers of filtering: has a paid tier, share of reviews posted that day, and whether one company runs multiple accounts (merge by developer_domain).
- Confidence
- High (checked month by month today, fully consistent with the report). What would overturn this: over the next 30 days, the reviews data shows a bundle or AI image app with a paid tier, launched after a certain 2026-05, adding ≥50 reviews a month, while the share of reviews from that day is <20%.
Evidence
Grouped by store. Each group starts with the charts that can be graphed (real curves, data dates below the chart), then the scanner's original notes and source links.
Shopify App Store 5 pieces of evidence
- Shopify App Store (11-02 check, by month listed): new app count 2026-04 is 697, jumps to 2,748 in May, 2,232 by October; zero-review share 65% → 73% → 93%; apps with ≥10 reviews 35 → 67 → 2; getting BFS 29 → 40 → 0. Report: 2026 listed 14,107 apps, 49% of everything on the store; of the 91 listed in the past year with ≥30 reviews, 71% have BFS, while only 1% of all 14,983 new apps from the past year do.
- Shopify App Store (verified 11-02): bundles / add-to-cart. The incumbent is Kaching Bundles (bundle-deals) with 6,567 reviews, 30 days recent, ≥30. The best newcomer is Rapid Cart (rapid-cart, 06-24) with 84 reviews, 30 days recent, 17 (report: same-day reviews 40%). Beez (beez, 03-18) has 79 reviews, 30 days recent, 24. Report: 734 bundle apps (431 in the past year), 1,207 upsell, 569 cart customization, 335 quantity discounts, about 100 new apps a month. The official Shopify Bundles (shopify-bundles) has 571 reviews, 2.8★, but that gap was filled ten years ago by Kaching, Fast Bundle, and BOGOS.
- Shopify App Store (verified 11-02): dropshipping / AI store builders. DSers (dsers) has 6,432 reviews. Atlas: AI Store Builder (dropshipt) has 383 reviews, 30 days recent, with 56% of low ratings. Report: 605 dropshipping apps, indie developers make up 89.6%. Supply-chain business is not the app business.
- Shopify App Store (verified 11-02): the top AI product image / virtual try-on apps in the past year are Icona: AI Virtual Try On (icona) with 29 reviews and Modelize (modelize) with 27 reviews (report: 328 AI product image apps and 269 try-on apps, each roughly 70–80% launched in the past year). WhatsApp bulk messaging: WhatFlow (whatflow) has 330 reviews, Robo Calls Pakistan (robo-calls-pakistan) 134, Vrobo (vrobo) 55 (report: of 598 apps, 324 launched in the past year, with developers in India, Pakistan and Egypt competing against each other).
- Shopify App Store (verified 11-02, fake-review model): India's SlashCart Pvt Ltd used 6 partner accounts (official sites slashcart.org / slashcart.com) to list 12 apps, nearly all without a paid tier: SPL TikTok Shop Integration (slashcart-tiktok-shop-sync) 867 reviews, RF Barcode Labels (delta-retail-barcode) 628, SEOLab (gptlab) 357, Loyalty Palm (loyalty-palm, 06-22) 34 reviews, 30 days recent, 22, Fast Subscriptions 22, withdrawal button (seolab-eu-withdrawal) 12. The reviews are requested casually in support chats ("Alice was great help setting up"). They dominate the front of the new-apps charts, yet not one of them is collecting money.
Standalone product revenue (TrustMRR) 1 pieces of evidence
- Indie (reported numbers, TrustMRR 11-01 snapshot): AI product photography Rewarx AI Product Photography, 30 days $3.7k. Genlook virtual try-on has stopped updating. API costs eat the margin.
Already doing it
Veterans of the past decade like Kaching, DSers, CJ, Zendrop and Spocket; companies running the free fake-review model like SlashCart; and many multi-app factories out of Vietnam, India and Pakistan.
The hardest step
Distribution. New apps in these categories can't get reviews or BFS, so however good the product, nobody sees it.
Who it's for
Not recommended for new entrants. Shopify builders should use this to filter noise when reading the charts.
Should every product builder know this?
Yes. "AI drives launch costs to zero → distribution becomes scarcer than product" holds equally on the App Store and the Chrome Web Store.
