Not promising: paid-acquisition 'utility shells' with dark-pattern weekly subscriptions. Family locators / phone trackers, cleaners / 'software updaters' / deleted-message recovery, and subscription shells that ride on brand names.
- Status
- Closed (not recommended: the features are built into the OS or free, the money comes entirely from paid acquisition and weekly-subscription dark patterns, and the developers are multi-persona app mills)
- Why this is written up
- These categories always have new releases and always climbing, and they stand out on the App Store and GP trending and category top-grossing charts. Miloc hit the category top-grossing charts in dozens of stores within 23 days of launch, with only single-digit global ratings. On the surface it looks like demand, but in practice it's paid acquisition + weekly subscriptions + aggressive paywalls, run by app mills. It's the same paid acquisition playbook as [008], just a different monetization: [008] runs on interstitial ads, this one on weekly-subscription dark patterns. Use both together when filtering trending charts for noise.
- Confidence
- High. Reversal conditions (what would make it doable for small teams): a utility or cleaner app with a one-time purchase or family annual subscription and written-review average ≥4 that reaches the top 50 of a main-market category top-grossing chart through organic traffic and holds it for 30 days, showing demand exists without dark patterns; or Apple / Google tightening weekly-subscription and trial rules and clearing out the shell factories.

In the TOOLS category, the 180 'indie dev winners' in 14 days were all cleaners, 2FA, virtual numbers, and deleted-message recovery. None were a new category.
- GP (verified 11-02): Clean Up Phone Storage: CleanX (com.xstudios.cleanx, TapSuite, 5 apps in library) has 3,651,372 installs, 127,664 rating, charted in 25 stores; best overall Top Grossing rank in ar was #56 (report #58). German reviews: 150 reviews averaging 2.58 stars (reported figures).
- GP (kr, verified 11-02): subscriptions selling 'we update your apps' ($12.99–19.99): SaverHub Apps' Software Updater (software.update.updatesofware) TOOLS Top Grossing #8 in kr; Media Tech Studioz (com.softwareupdate.updateallapps.appsupdate.phoneupdates, first launched 10-14) #15 (report #14); Apps Resort (com.appresort.app.update.softwareupdate.updatesoftware.updateallapp.phoneupdates.appupdate) #35. 'Recover Deleted Messages App' has several same-name apps: 8th Generation Apps (recover.deleted.messages.business) TOOLS Top Grossing #4 in kr; Global Private Networks (com.rdm.notifyme.deletedmessages, 3,040,818 installs) #6.
- GP (gb / us, verified 11-02): Dash Cam: Dashcam Viewer (com.remoteapps.dashcam.android, Driving Theory Test LLC) has 142,540 installs and 10,104 rating, Auto Top Grossing #9 in gb and #12 in us, matching the report. Australian reviews: 'How did 5,420 reviews give 4.6 stars?' 'Doesn't support Rove' 'Bought the lifetime plan and then...' 'Rated me before I'd done anything' (reported figures). This is a subscription shell borrowing a dash cam brand name, not an actual dash cam app.
Already doing it
Location apps: Locato, Miloc, LocateFamily, Find My 365, FindFamy, SnapLo, Phone Tracker: Family Finder. Cleaners: CleanX (TapSuite). 'Software update' apps: SaverHub (5 apps), Media Tech Studioz (3), Apps Resort (4). Deleted-message recovery has at least a dozen same-name packages (Longnine, Gurru, Technoline, Global Private Networks, 8th Generation Apps...). Brand-borrowing: Dash Cam: Dashcam Viewer.
The hardest step
It's not the features, it's the paid-acquisition budget, plus withstanding bad reviews, refunds and platform takedowns. The features themselves are built in or free: iOS has Find My, and Android has built-in storage cleanup and app updates.
Who it's for
Only suits app makers with a paid-acquisition team who can run several shell accounts at once. Indie devs can only learn how to spot them: zero or single-digit ratings yet Top Grossing in dozens of stores, developers named *_LIMITED with several same-name apps, and written-review averages far below the star average on the rating page.
Should every product builder know this?
Yes (you must filter out noise when reading GP TOOLS and iOS acceleration charts).
