Stringers

Not promising: link-in-bio / bento personal pages. You can max out PH votes, but users just won't pay.

Closed Inspiring (counter-case) · Real demand, very weak willingness to pay First spotted 2026-11-01 · Last updated 2026-11-02
Status
Closed (don't follow: own.page maxed out PH but only converted to about $480 MRR, and apart from one six-year-old product, nearly every peer is at zero)
Why this is written up
With Bento.me shutting down, the spot looks open and PH will vote for it. But own.page ran a textbook launch (eight months of build-in-public, daily #2, 2,000 signups) and still only converted to about $480 MRR. The problem isn't the product, it's that users won't pay; the free tier also brings content moderation, abuse and infrastructure costs.
Confidence
High. Conditions that would overturn this (when it becomes buildable for small teams): own.page or a similar new product takes a vertical audience past $3k MRR; or Linktree raises prices sharply or drops its free tier, pushing out a group of high-willingness-to-pay users.

  • indie (11-02 check): own.page (own.page) MRR $476, 62 subscriptions, $362 in 30 days; month by month May (launch month) $246 → June $749 → August $1,287 → September $331 → October $386, back to pre-launch levels. The old Austrian Stripe account (own-page-flexco) still has 6 subscriptions, $39 MRR.
  • indie (11-02 check, full-text search for the first 25 link-in-bio results): apart from Liinks (liinks.co, MRR $31,516, 5,502 subscriptions, six years old), the top is Linkie at MRR $353, followed by Taap.bio $171, Flaem (flaem.co) $115, Linkero (linke.ro) $114, and most of the rest around $0.

Product Hunt2 pieces of evidence

  • PH (2026-05-25): own.page 640 votes (517 today), daily chart #2, weekly chart #3, 88 comments. The founder's retrospective says 2,021 signups in 22 days after launch, versus 62–63 subscriptions now, implying about 0.6% conversion (inferred from signups); the site claims 11,000+ users.
  • PH (since 2026-05): 134 link-in-bio / bento launches, only 2 featured; own.page is the only one to pass 100 votes.

  • Web (own.page blog 2026-01-28 / founder on X 10-30): the category leader Bento.me shut down earlier this year; the founder 10-30 said that because people build policy-violating pages on the free plan, they are seriously considering dropping it.

Already doing it

Linktree, Liinks, own.page, Linkie, Taap.bio, Flaem, Linkero; Bento.me has shut down.

In our product dossiers: own.page

The hardest step

Give users a reason to pay. The free tier is enough; Pro mostly adds a custom domain.

Who it's for

Don't build a generic version. If you do, pick a vertical audience that can pay $20+/month (freelancers taking bookings, coaches scheduling sessions, bands selling tickets) and turn the page into a business card with payments and booking (inferred build advice).

Should every product builder know this?

Yes. This is the cleanest example of "PH votes and signups do not equal payments".
